A TV investigative reporter and his sister, a San Francisco PD homicide detective, look into the slayings of Bay Area cops who have shot unarmed African Americans yet faced no repercussions in this debut crime thriller.“Brian Copeland’s thrilling debut novel is a revelation from an excitingly fresh voice ‘of color’ in the arena of crime fiction . . . He manages to take a ‘ripped from the headlines’ topic, the shooting of unarmed African Americans by police, and turn it into an exciting and entertaining blend of action, mystery, and social commentary.” —New York Times bestselling author JONATHAN KELLERMAN When San Francisco Police Officer Mickey Driscoll is gunned down in the driveway of his suburban Bay Area home in broad daylight, the suspects are numerous. Was the murder committed by someone close to him? An arrestee seeking revenge? Or was it one of the many rioters, activists, and militant groups harassing his family since he accidentally shot and killed an unarmed African American honor student?   TV investigative reporter Topher Davis, the only Black journalist on that beat, has exactly three weeks to do one final story before his position is eliminated due to corporate budget cuts. Enlisting the aid of his sister, SFPD Homicide Detective Lynn Sloan, he decides to investigate what the families of Blacks killed by police--and the families of the cops themselves--go through when tragic events like this occur. Instead, they find themselves involved in an ever-expanding mystery as more officers who’ve committed the same offense turn up dead. Weaving their way through a world of grieving mothers and widows, African American militias, dirty cops, and drug dealers, they search for the truth that threatens to leave one . . . or both . . . siblings dead.

First and foremost, this pretty damn great for a DEBUT novel!! This was twisty and satisfying, to say the least. I identified a part of the twist kind of early on but the way Brian Copeland twisted the twist was pretty damn EPIC. This is def plot driven but I enjoyed the main characters and their sibling banter. The pacing was great, Brian did an excellent job with building the foundation of the story and giving us any history we needed while delivering a good climax and ending. This was a bold exploration of a topic that we’ve seen and heard often, and the execution was spot on. I enjoyed Copelands writing style, it was nicely paced and easy to read. He was able to address complex issues while not making it feel “too heavy”. It was authentic and it was obvious that he researched well. I even learned some history about some cities in the Bay Area that I never knew (San Leandro and Castor Valley’s history with the Klan and reputations of  being “whites only” back in the day.

As a Bay Area native, I enjoyed the nuggets of home throughout this book. Reading about places I’ve been and that are familiar made this experience that much better. One word to describe Outraged, CAPTIVATING. A must read of you’re into crime thriller with a good twist.

Brian Copeland has written a heck of a debut novel. A crime thriller with lots of twisty turns and a satisfying ending. Nearly 80% through the book, I felt like I had identified the killer from what they said to another character. I was right, but there was another twist to even the killer’s addendum. I enjoyed the main characters, Topher and Lynn, siblings, one a cop, Lynn, and one a television personality, Topher. Together they set out to find who is killing cops and why. The story takes many detours along the way.
This was a really quick and easy read. I could have finished it in one day, but life happens. There was enough back story throughout the book for both the characters. The story is more plot driven and it pays off.
I believe there needs to be a 2nd book for this one and I hope that there is. I will definitely read it.
The one thing, if any, that I didn’t like was the use of unnecessary attributes. “He put on his “black” silk robe”. This happened quite often and sometimes sounded a bit elitist. I know that may seem petty and I have never commented on attributes, I’m a speech pathologist and I have to teach this skill to kids, but I felt it wasn’t needed in many of the descriptions. That’s just a side note the novel was great and kudos to Copeland for writing such a fantastic book

Oh, I enjoyed this one!!! I ran through the pages in one day. This was a great crime thriller, jam packed with twists, multiple storylines, and an ending that I didn’t expect. I knew something was going to happen but I did not see the ending turning out the way it did. 😮The pacing of the story was good; the author really built a solid foundation and the climax of the story was just right. I was genuinely looking at everyone as a suspect. I would accept more of this type of story!!! Lynn and Topher were the dynamic duo, if I ever seen one. I loved their sibling bond. Also, can we talk about the fact that Topher changed his name for work purposes to have more opportunities?! Wow- the small details.

Arc from netgalley and the publisher.

Not sure how the story will be reviewed by a wide audience. So hear goes. I have listened to the author as a radio talk show host over a period of time. I liked listening to his show. When I heard he wrote a mystery, I thought I would have to read it.

I probably could have read it in one night. Th story was nased in the bay area and northern California. I felt like I could visualize all of the locations. I suspected a twist coming near the end but then I forgot about it.
I enjoyed the book and will wait for the next one.

This was so good!!! Thank you so much for sending me a digital ARC of this novel Netgalley and Black Oddyssey Media!

The writing was great and easy to comprehend. The story was paced very well. It kept me guessing! I figured out the plot twist, but then I was like no that’s not right so I thought it was different, but I was right!!

I am hoping there might be a second book based on the ending! I will definitely pick it up if there is one! I loved the characters and I would love to see more of them.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.

Brian Copeland's debut novel, "Outraged," is a gripping crime thriller that delves into the contentious issue of police shootings of unarmed African Americans. The narrative follows TV investigative reporter Topher Davis and his sister, SFPD Homicide Detective Lynn Sloan, as they unravel the mystery behind the slayings of Bay Area police officers involved in such shootings.

Copeland's novel is a bold exploration of a topic that resonates deeply with current social issues. The author's background as a comedian and talk show host lends a unique perspective to the storytelling, infusing the narrative with a blend of sharp wit and incisive social commentary. The plot is well-crafted, with a pace that keeps the reader engaged from start to finish.

The characters are richly developed, particularly the protagonist, Topher Davis, whose determination to uncover the truth before his job is cut due to budget constraints adds a layer of urgency to the investigation. His relationship with his sister Lynn provides an emotional depth to the story, as they navigate the dangerous waters of their inquiry.

Copeland's writing style is accessible yet sophisticated, managing to address complex themes without sacrificing entertainment value. The dialogue is authentic, and the San Francisco setting is vividly portrayed, adding to the overall atmosphere of the book.

"Outraged" is a thought-provoking piece that challenges readers to consider the aftermath of police violence from multiple perspectives. It's a commendable first entry into the world of crime fiction for Copeland and a must-read for fans of the genre looking for substance as well as suspense.

What a wild ride! I devoured this crime thriller in a single day, and let me tell you, it was a rollercoaster of twists that left me gasping for air. The plot intricately wove together multiple storylines, and just when I thought I had it all figured out, the ending hit me like a pie to the face—surprise! The pacing was spot on, leading to a climax that had me second-guessing everyone’s motives. Lynn and Topher, the dynamic sibling duo, were a delight, especially with Topher’s cheeky name change for work. "Outraged by Brian Copeland" was a gripping read that had me piecing together clues like a caffeine-fueled detective, and that final twist? Absolutely jaw-dropping! I also appreciated the historical nuggets about San Francisco; they added flavor without turning into a snooze-fest. However, there were a few moments that threw me off, like the overly detailed driving directions—seriously, who needs to know every twist and turn on I-580? And the constant mentions of car brands, especially Lexus, felt like annoying commercial breaks during a thrilling chase. Some cultural references flew right over my head, leaving me scratching it in confusion. But despite these minor bumps, the book was a captivating page-turner with a plot and characters that kept me guessing. I can’t wait to dive into the next installment!

Outraged by Brian Copeland was an engaging and suspenseful read that kept me hooked from start to finish. I really enjoyed the twist, the mystery, and the tension woven throughout the story. I found myself constantly trying to piece together who murdered the police officers, and just when I thought I had it figured out—boom—the final twist completely shocked me. I did not see that coming!

I also appreciated learning some history about San Francisco—it added an interesting layer to the story and didn’t feel forced. That said, there were a few things that took away from the flow. The author was a bit too detailed when describing characters’ routes and driving directions (like “he took I-580 then turned right on Fisher Street”), which felt unnecessary. He also repeatedly mentioned car brands, especially Lexus, which started to get annoying. Some of the references to older events or cultural things went over my head, which made a few parts a little confusing.

Despite those small drawbacks, it was a solid read with a strong plot, compelling characters, and great suspense. I’m definitely looking forward to picking up book 2!

This is my first time reading a Brian Copeland book. I am impressed by his storytelling. After reading the blurb, my initial reaction was that I wanted to read the book immediately. He did not disappoint at all!

This novel has a captivating storyline and the characters were great to read. My favorite character is Lynn, the nonsense SFPD Homicide detective. She is gritty and brilliant at what she does.

OUTRAGED is plot-driven, which makes the book more interesting. The mystery in itself was so good. It wasn’t predictable. It kept you guessing who was the killer and trying to figure out the motive. The writing is top-notch!

I was satisfied with the book’s ending. The storyline wrapped up perfectly!

Will I recommend this book to others? Yes! I can not wait to read more literary offerings from Brian Copeland!

Just finished this book and it's a modern twist on shows like murder she wrote, matlock or Columbo. It was engaging and it sucked me in with it's charismatic charm. It's well written with wonderful dialog and a lovely humor throughout. I loved the story and the quick chapters made it an easy read that flowed and felt rewarding to read. I loved the plot and very neutral take on the social justice issues we are facing now and I appreciated every characters motivation throughout the book. One thing felt off but overall this book is a 9 out of 10 and 4.5 stars of of 5. If you love those shows and murder mysteries definitely pick this one up I look forward to the second in the series coming early next year.

Well-plotted, located in the Bay Area where I live, replete with the politics of police brutality and its aftermath and also other motives for the murders of more than one cop, what's not to like? Topher Davis and his police officer sister, plus his two assistants, navigate the thriller's territory, and the book is a page-turner, as all good thrillers are. Not deep and philosophical, just fast-moving and gripping, which in this case was enough for me. My only gripe was that it took a bit long to reach a conclusion that was a bit far-fetched. But both may be par for the course for thrillers. Copeland is also the author of "Not a Genuine Black Man," the longest-running play ever in the Bay Area. If you like thrillers, check this one out.

In Copeland's debut mystery novel, Bay Area TV reporter Topher Davis and his police detective sister Lynn collaborate to solve recent killings of police officers. The story contains humor and plenty of accurate details of the Easy Bay setting, a little romance, and fun information on TV news production. There are a few clues that allow the reader to guess as to the killer but the ending still has plenty of surprises. First in a series, this has plenty of appeal and would make a fantastic movie - if filmed on location since the various Easy Bay cities are essential to the story.

I recently finished Brian Copeland's debut novel, and it's a total page-turner! The story starts off with a bang and maintains its momentum as we join siblings Lynn and Chris (aka Topher) in a race against time to apprehend a killer. I had a feeling about the culprit's identity, but the actual connection was completely unexpected. If you enjoy thrillers that keep you on your toes, this one is a definite must-read!

I really enjoyed all the local references! I live in Hayward and our protagonist is here in neighboring Castro Valley. I recognized local landmarks, history, and businesses (some renamed). Though the narrator mispronounced Chabot.

I also liked the sibling duo of the television journalist and the SFPD detective.

The mystery was intriguing.

But the ending was just… What?
Jumped the shark, as they say.

I liked this first novel by Brian Copeland, someone I know because of his plays in support of mental health and racial issues. I liked this complete change of pace from his previous work - his details about the San Francisco, Oakland and East Bay Area, his sometimes-humorous side comments, and his clever plot. I hope to be reading more Topher Davis thrillers.

Familiar with Brian Copeland as a comedian and story teller I wasn't surprised by how well the storyline of his novel was written. I was hooked from the very first page. The mastermind for the killings I never saw coming. Looking forward to more from this author!

Such a good story. Love the local details. I happen to live in Pleasanton and all the driving and parking issues and traffic made it so real. Like Michael Connelly for the Bay Area. Laughed often. Great dialogue.
Twists and turns to keep me guessing until the end and what a great, satisfying ending!
One more reason to admire you! Thanks.

This was an enjoyable first in a new series.

I love San Francisco Bay Area locales, and this seemed to be accurate and incisive.

The plot was daring, and I loved the twist.

These are characters who care about their jobs and their communities. I was behind them 110%.

I have purchased the next book in the series as it is not in my public library.

I read a library copy of book one.
