“avenant, there hasn’t been a contest of valor in a century, because they always kill everyone. you could get the Northlands back without all this…”
he cut her off. “just agree to it, before she changes her mind.”
letty swore under her breath. “or you could just ask belle on a date and not risk your kingdom and your life. wouldn’t that be simpler?”

i casually decided to reread beast in shining armor because i felt bad about giving another book in this series less than four stars

*cough* seducing the sheriff of nottingham *cough*

everything from my original review still stands except one thing. i called this book repetitive… LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL what a sweet summer child i was, let me tell ya guys.

cause in terms of repetitiveness i'd say this book is actually the tightest and best paced book cassandra gannon has written.

avenant and belle are the best couple of the a kinda fairytale world, in my personal opinion. also, i keep forgetting about what an awesome side-character esmerelda is! i really hope her, and a certain dragon, eventually get their happily ever afters!

***

❝Thank you.❞ ...
❝You’re welcome, my love.❞
She loved it when he called her that. The man was a total jerk, but she might just be adapting to having him around.

This book was … everything and I absolutely adored it. Truly, I high-key loved everything about this book.

We had -

♥ True enemies-to-lovers
♥ A gallant quest
♥ Banter for days
♥ The heroine saving the hero
♥ Great side-characters
♥ A devoted hero
♥ Flashbacks that made me cry
♥ Beauty and the Beast retelling
♥ Romance
♥ Magic
♥ Riddles
♥ An adorable epilogue (any dissenters can fight me)
♥ The best "I Love You" scene
♥ The sweetest surrender
♥ One of the best terms of endearments (i swear i about died every time he called her "my love")

Moreover, I loved that Gannon wrote Avenant in such a consistent way. He was the same Avenant we loved from book one, but with some added depth. My man had LAYERS. He was flawed but at the same time he was just a man who deeply wanted to be loved and accepted.

Plus as I mentioned, the way he was so devoted to Belle, aAlfsalkdjflkasjdf - 😭😭😭 Every time he called her "my love" I swooned and cried. I have never felt so single in my entire life, I swear. Also, anytime he called her "that usurper" - I freaking died of laughter.

Belle was also the perfect love interest for Avenant. She never took his shit and constantly pushed him to be the better version of himself. What I loved about Belle was that deep down she really loved Avenant, but she refused to settle. She wanted him to WANT to love her. Now - do I wish she would have given into him earlier in the book? Yes, but … Belle and Avenant don't take the easy road, that's just not who they are as people.

Now, was this a perfect book? No. I had my issues with it. Namely, I thought it got to be a bit repetitive, and I wish that Belle had opened up a little more to Avenant. But ask me, do I give a fuck? No bish, I do not. To me this book wasperfect. I was able to overlook any flaws this book had. Denial-land here I come.

As of now, Beast in Shining Armor is now my official favorite retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I dare any book to try and usurp BISA's throne. Because honestly, THIS is how you take B&TB and make it your own. So yeah … I HIGHLY recommend this book (and series). It was funny, romantic, epic, and had a whole lotta of heart.

I like to read a silly romance from time to time when I’m so done with heavy reads. And it was time yesterday to read something light, fun, and easy to fly through. So I went for recommendations to my dear friend, Fernanda, who recommended me several books and I eventually chose this one and it served its purpose! Sure I’m rating it 3 and not 4 because I had some issues with this book but I didn’t take them seriously while reading it. I have to mention them however in my review. Still, this was a very enjoyable romance to read if you’re not looking for a serious read but instead just relax, make 0 mental effort, and watch the romance.

3 1/2
I haven’t read the first installment in this series but it’s not necessary to read this book. It’s obvious who the lovers were since they make an appearance but since I’m not planning on reading book 1, I didn’t mind. It was also a fast read and I enjoyed the banter between the main characters. There was also a good tension build up but I have some reservations regarding the ending, it was kinda too cheesy. The epilogue sets up the stage for the next book in the series.

What's weird about this book is that the most of story takes place during only one day. We have some flashbacks, that served the story well, but other than the beginning and the end, the whole story takes place in the maze.

I have to mention first that the characters have known each other since kindergarten. They have a very long history but never got romantic (though the "beast" was always interested even if he didn't show it). It's more like their past was a built-up, romantically, to that day in the maze. While it doesn't feel like one day, I still think it all happened too fast. I wish the story and the final romance took place during a longer period of time.

Moreover, I am not a fan of soulmates. I don't believe in soulmates as nice as it sounds nor enjoy this trope in books. We had here "true love" which is equivalent to soulmate and while I was okay with it at first, it was repeated too often to my liking by the end of the book.

Another issue that prevented me from giving this book 4 stars is that the story because too much saccharine to my taste. While this is expected, faced with a romance that bloomed in one day... I couldn't stomach it.

These were minors things because I genuinely enjoyed reading this book. The banter was so fun to read and the sexual tension was sparking! I also like our main characters. Overall, it was an entertaining romance retelling and it was exactly what I needed. A book that requires zero effort to read + cute romance + likable characters, in other words, a book that doesn't take itself too seriously. While I won't be continuing with this series, I will look up Gannon's other books. I believe fans of romance retellings would enjoy this book!

This second book in Cassandra Gannon's A Kinda Fairytale series was every bit as fun and enjoyable as the first instalment. The characters are likeable, the world is a ton of fun, the humour is hilarious, and even the romance is good!

With the Westlands saved the Tuesday Share Circle crew turn their attention to the Northlands. Prince Avenant wants his kingdom back! Scarlet tries for a peaceful solution but Avenant, arrogant as always, makes things difficult by demanding a contest for the crown. The contest pits him directly against his usurping rival, Belle (and a host of other would be rulers), as she seeks to keep the crown for herself!

The story was a ton of fun. Avenant was probably the most distant and arrogant of the group in the first book but he proved surprisingly sympathetic and easy to like once we learned what motivated him to act as he does. Belle was also pretty likeable. The pair had being competing and bickering against each other all their lives but this time the prize was bigger than ever so both were determined to be the one who came out on top!

It was great to see another kingdom in this world and it was super easy to get swept up in Avenant and Belle's story as it was a fun twist on the Beauty and the Beast tale. I think the best thing in Gannon's books is that despite a bit of bickering and banter her couples always feel like a good match and are super easy to root for. She even writes a great pompous, arrogant, male lead which is a total rarity!

I hope we get Esmarelda's story one day as she definitely seems like a character with plenty of potential.

All in all I might even have liked this one a tiny bit more than the first book. It was light and fun but with enough about the story that I invested emotionally in the characters and was engaged by the crazy happenings.

Rating: 4 stars.

I don't even know where to begin with singing this book's praises. Here's a quick rundown:

✔️ 10000% safe, with a hero and heroine who actually are implied to be each other's firsts (at age 28, I might add)

✔️ A (blond) hero who's completely obsessed with the heroine and has been since kindergarten

✔️ A heroine who sent the hero to prison and stole his throne, setting up a delicious enemies-to-lovers situation

✔️ Great sexual tension matched only by the absolutely laugh-out-loud witty banter

✔️ A fabulously funny and inventive plot

Those are enough reasons. Go and read the damn book already.

Yet another book that had me until the last few pages.

Minor spoilers ahead so beware!

I'll never understand how something can start out so funny, entertaining and whimsical all to end in a pile of rushed icky sweet cheesy garbage.

I'm SO disappointed in multiple different ways but I only need to speak about one:

The baby at the end.

"One year later" begins the last chapter and proceeds to explain how in that time, Belle gets married and pops a baby out and SOMEHOW their sex drive is exactly the same? WHAT? Can we talk about how long it takes for a womans body to recover post birth? A year. Sometimes more.

And you're trying to convince me that she had this baby two months prior and they're already roleplaying again?

 photo 16Jvx_zpsviqb1ban.gif

They spend 30 years despising each other (which changes in the course of 24 hours, let's not talk about it) and then they immediately have a baby without anytime to just be a couple. I'm biased in that babies usually ruin everything for me in a book ever since I was scarred for life during the Twilight series, but this one just killed me. Yet another one added to my "the ending ruined this book". )':

Look, I enjoy this author's writing and world building a lot. But this romance kinda broke my heart.

These two fight with each other and apparently, enjoy it. But I didn't. Avenant, especially, about broke my heart over and over again as I saw how mean he was over the years to Belle.

This was a tough one.

I don't like books that perpetuate the idea that "if a boy pulls your pigtails, it means he likes you" and this book is like a treatise on that toxic saying/belief.

Plus, I don't know if he had sex with other women while he knew Belle was his True Love, but he definitely dated them.

Basically, I'm not sure that either didn't have sex with others while they were in love and that makes me sad too.

Hmm, I'm not sure, but I think it was okay. But, ngl, it was difficult to overlook what Avenant did to Belle when they were younger. He literally terrorized her because she was his true love, but she had no idea of that. He knew about it since they were kids, and he wanted her to like him, but he went about it the wrong way by acting like a jerk to her growing up.

But it's not entirely his fault because his parents were awful and filled his mind with lies. He was also young, and he didn't have a good role model for dealing with feelings and emotions, so I kind of understand him. But that doesn't mean I have to like it.

Seeing their past encounters and Belle's efforts to befriend Avenant made me sad because she tried so hard to get to know him. It was not her fault that she didn't realize he was her true love. Despite him being a jerk, she still reached out, but all he did was bully her and assume the worst about her intentions. It was really stressful to see how their younger shelves interacted with one another. 🤧

Anyway, now that they're older, I'm glad they could finally get on the same page. I'm still a bit annoyed with Avenant and how he punished Belle for something she didn't even know about, but he was still devoted to her, so I'll do my best to move past it. As for Belle, I’m really impressed by her good heart and that she is still able to love and genuinely care for Avenant despite their past.

As for safety, it wasn't really clear if these two were inexperienced or not. But back when they were younger, during that whole enemies phase. Avenant warned all the guys who liked Belle, but he had girlfriends and was actively dating, and she knew about all of them (hypocrisy at its finest). 😑🙄 Idk if he actually did anything with them, but he did it to make her jealous. Unfortunately for him, she didn't care about them.

Scene during their prom night where Avenant paid a girl to flirt with Belle's date:

H: No, I don’t feel guilty. Peter knew I would destroy him if he came near you. Everyone knows that. What happened is on him. When he got between us, he became fair game. I should have finished him off that day at the pool.
h: It was your fault, not his. Everything is always your fault, because you always go too far. Do I attack your stick-figure girlfriends? No. I leave innocent people out of it, even when they’re dumber than a pompom. Why can’t you do the same?
H: Peter isn’t innocent. Neither is any other guy who asks you out. I will ruin every date you try to have with another man, I promise you.
h: You are such a beast!
H: And I know you don’t give a shit who I’m dating. That’s obvious. If you were pissed about any of them, I’d be thrilled and they’d be history.

I'm so glad that Ilona Andrews recommended this series, it's been such a joy to read and I love the way Cassandra Gannon has used so many familiar characters but created her own world and a completely unique story for them. While each book is about a different main couple and works as a stand alone romance I'd definitely recommend reading the series in order so you can get to know all the recurring side characters and learn about the world.

We met Prince Avenant in the first book, he was a member of the WUB Club and he was with Letty, Marrok and the others when they escaped the Wicked Ugly Bad Mental Health Treatment Centre and Maximum Security Prison. Avenant was only in prison because his long term rival Belle (& childhood crush) set him up for fraud and then led a rebellion against him so that she could steal his crown and he is determined to get back what is rightfully his no matter what it takes. Avenant is understandably bitter about the way things went down between them but when he tries to claim back his kingdom he finds himself having to work alongside Belle to stop other rivals stealing the prize from them both.

Again I don't want to give away much of the plot but it involves a hero's quest, a labyrinth and a couple with years of fighting and bitterness between them who both refuse to admit they might have made a mistake. Expect lots of high jinx, plenty of fun characters and a surprisingly sweet romance. My only complaint about this series is that it could use a final editing pass but overall the errors I've spotted haven't take away my enjoyment of the stories and I find myself smiling the whole way through. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next book, The Kingpin of Camelot, and can't wait to see what Cassandra Gannon has in store for Guinevere and Midas.

Ilona Andrews recommended The Kingpin of Camelot, so of course I must follow her lead and read the series. I can't start at book 3 though so let's hope the first 2 books are awesome too!

3.5 stars. Cassandra Gannon puts her own spin on Beauty and the Beast! Meaning it was hilarious, sweet and entertaining. But, like the other Gannon books that I've read, it needed editing for spelling and grammatical errors, paring down extraneous pages and tightening the pacing.

Gannon is *such* a gifted comedic writer. Her stories feature extremely creative and quirky plots as well as great characters. Alas, the lack of editing remains an issue. Even so, it won't prevent me from continuing this series of retold fairytales.

I loved the first book in this Kinda Fairytale series, but I think I liked this one even more!!

Remake of Beauty and the Beast, this version had the two knowing each other since Kindergarten, which I adored because we got to see them grow up together! It made their journey to a happily ever after more epic.

And conceited, arrogant, highbrow jerk that Avenant was, he still won me over because he worked through all his issues to be with Belle.

This story had more angst but still some of the humor I adored in book one. Belle and Avenant's struggle to come together twisted my guts in a knots a few times. And I've come to learn I don't ever want to be stuck in a labyrinth either!

Onto another Cassandra Gannon book! I think I'm addicted.

1. Single mom + hombre que solo busca un hogar y ser amado + found family (the kingpin of Camelot)
2. La pareja más enfermizamente OBSESIONADA el uno con el otro con una fmc hilarante + viaje en el tiempo para impedir el asesinato del mmc + unrequited love (from him) (seducing the sheriff of Nottingham)
(Ghost walk)
4. Childhood rivals to enemies to lovers atorados en un laberinto que los obliga a trabajar juntos y aclarar mal entendidos + B&B retelling + unrequited love (from him) (ESTE LIBRO)

“You’re welcome, my love.”

“Please, my love.”  He breathed against her lips and she knew what he wanted.”

“You love me?”
“Of course.”  It shocked him that she needed to hear the words.  Three vision-impaired
mice could’ve seen that he was head over heels for this woman.  “I don’t remember a day of my life when I haven’t loved you. You shared your crayons with me in kindergarten and I was a goner.”

“The woman drove him insane, but Belle was a part of him.  She was the heart he hadn’t been born with, beating outside of his body. ”

5 stars — I loved this!!!

I think I can safely call myself a huge fan of Cassandra Gannon’s A Sorta Fairytale series, as 3 out of 3 is an excellent track record. They’ve all been SO creative and entertaining.

This one is Beauty vs the Beast (except his beast is hidden away, shifter style), and they team up (but also compete) on a quest to find Excalibur as part of a ‘contest of valor’ to claim the throne. They’ve been fierce rivals since kindergarten, up until she stole his throne / deposed a tyrant and sent him to prison, and he’s now back to win her ‘surrender’.

I loved how arrogant Avenant was (his snobbishly cutting remarks were hilarious), but in an endearing and sympathetic way. As usual, the Good folk who raised him up were the real bad guys. And Belle was a bitch at times, but he loved that about her. Their energy was very much “I hate you but I’ll protect you against all others in a split second”. Also, he REALLY wanted to see her boobs. 😂

It did get a little sappy in the epilogue, but you know what? I LOVED THAT TOO! 😍😍😍

Woah this is now one of my favorite Enemies to lover stories EVER! The back & forth/banter was so fun to read.

In this world there are Good folks & Bad folks, Bella is Good & Avenant was born bad. Since he was born he was a disappointment to his parents & his kingdom since he was born with a beast. Avenant was raised very poorly so it left him having a huge wall around his feelings/heart leaving him protecting it by being cold hearted & mean ..... except to belle 👀

Avanant & belle have this constant war they had going on since they were kids of back & fourth taunts. Avenant loves doing anything to get belle attention even if it make her mad. One day when they are older after belle has sent him to prison & stolen his spot on the crown. He is back & is wanting not only wanting his kingdom back but also belle....

This book goes back & fourth from the present of them in this content for the sword to see who get the crown & of things that happened in the past between them. The romance & the angst MSNSUSUS i was going crazy!

Loved this book!

So I actually started with this story first, but novel #1 is my favourite of the two. For 2 main reasons, 1) the leads were just more interesting and fun.

Our handsome prince is one of Letty's friend from Tuesday Share Circle. We are given hints to his story in book 1, but I got to say his holier-than-thou comments - which were some of his best lines - were so much better in book 1. In book 2 he is more just the jealous lovesick "villain".

Belle comes off so one note - always so good. Letty from book 1 was so more fiesty and fun. She was Good trying to be Bad, and she masterminded a jailbreak. Enough said.

The story takes place much through the characters time in a quest in a maze and in flashbacks. The flashbacks were stronger of the two set of scenes. The progression through the maze felt expected. I still enjoyed this book and the storyline. 2) Another thing that bugged me of course is the lack of communication. Just having an honest talk would have solved so much of their problems.

The author also choses to use the epilogue as more of a prologue for the next book. I would have liked to see more of the Happily Ever After to this fairy tale. Afterall it was a long time these two were dancing around each other. We earned a little more HEA time with them.

That was great. This book had me laughing my butt off start to finish and that makes me one satisfied reader. Sure the hero was a bit mopey and sure the emotional stuff tended to be a little melodramatic, but you know what? I forgive a lot if you can make me laugh and this did just that.
Can't wait to read what else this author has for me!

Same style as book 1. I think I liked a little more the first one but beast in shining armor is cute!
Funny read with evil hero and good heroine.
I think the bickering was sometimes to much but here we have a enemies to lovers as perfect example.
More than center in external action the book focus in the hero and heroine relationship and their development.

Overall: A fun read! Such a pitty this author isn't writing lately... I want to know about Esmeralda so bad!!

P.d: cutest epilogue

Ohmagod Avenant and Bella are so damn cute together. Their relationship is literally what every girl wants. Well, what I have always wanted.

We met Avenant in Scarlett and Marrok's story. He was in prison because he had been overthrown by Rosabella Aria Ashman, a bookshop owner and the only person who was brave enough to stand up to Avenant, a fact that infuriated and amused Avenant at the same time. Letty convinces Avenant to try and win back his kingdom in a legal way and Avenant begrudgingly accepts. In court, too many people argue for the throne, including Avenant, Belle, Lancelot (Avenant's idiotic cousin) and twenty four other commoners. To solve this, Avenant suggests contest of valor. Now, those vying for the throne must enter an unknown labyrinth, find their way through a probably never-ending maze of tunnels, survive rabbit-holes, minotaurs and a psychotic killer who has been picking off the contestants one by one and find the Excalibur.

Avenant reminds me of Damon Salvatore for some reason but he is also charming in his own way. He is the bad boy who every girl wants, the man who is unaffected by the world except for that one girl who has him wrapped around her finger. Jesus, I love this guy. Marrok has some serious competition now. I think I had a crush on Avenant ever since he smacked that guy from behind to help Letty during their time in WUB prison before plopping back into his chair and resume drinking his milk.

Rosabella Aria Ashman. She had me with her name. A smart, little fireball. Loves to read. Kinda introverted but can be a bitch when she wants. Ignored by the community. Has family issues. I feel like all of us, readers, can find a bit of ourselves in Belle. She loves books, just like us. I can be extremely bitchy and am quick to fly to a temper when provoked at the wrong time, I can be a patient angel too. I don't engage in mindless conversation. Ignored by the masses except few in my close circle. I don't have any family issues though. Love them.

Bella and Avenant have been competing against each other since kindergarten. It's like no one exist other than them. It is either Bella or Avenant. No one in between them. The banter between them, the enemies-to-lovers setup, the bouts of passion, my oh my, I am a gone girl. I've always wanted a relationship like that. A competitive one. I actually had one, when I was younger. Me and a group of guys used to be the spell bee champs at our grade and it was constant war between us. But, we grew up and didn't interact much. I regret floating away. I used to love our banter and comparisons. It wasn't unhealthy and was actually a lot of fun. So I've always wanted that kind of relationship with someone again and reading about these two was just... kinda nostalgic, I guess. Enough reason for me to love this book. #relationshipgoals

Aaannyway, a five star from me. A fun and amazing read, the type of read that makes you long for the same kind of things in the book. Don't miss out!

Avenant is the Prince who was born 'bad' with a beast inside him. Belle is good and has been butting heads with Avenant since kindergarten when he stole her crayons. Over the years Avenant has ruined Belle's birthday parties, prom, taking Mother Goose's show off the air, etc.

Bella fights back by taking Avenant to court. He gets thrown in jail with the other 'baddies' at the Wicked, Ugly and Bad Mental Health Treatment Center and Maximum Security Prison. Belle gets his kingdom.

After Avenant escapes prison he goes to court to get his kingdom back. It's not that easy though. All contestants for the throne have to navigate the mysteries of the labyrinth and pull Excaliber from the stone in the center.

Avenant has always known that Belle is his True Love, he just has to team up with her on this quest and prove it to her.

These books are so funny. You'll never look at fairy tale characters the same again. Wicked Ugly Bad (A Kinda Fairytale, #1) by Cassandra Gannon is my favorite of the 3 books. I love the group therapy sessions. They're hilarious.

4 fun ******

3.5 yea sure i enjoyed this one more than the first bc rivals to lovers and i like a lil adventure time in a labyrinth and all that but if you really think about it they’ve been pulling each other’s pigtails for 30 years only for it to switch up in a day, because essentially that’s how long the present chapters took place over and i’m not that type of girl, y’know?

but it was funny and i like the flashbacks of their childhood and the testimonies at the start of the chapters made me laugh out loud

i am, however, very interested in esmerelda so hopefully i’ll get that far in this series 💆🏽‍♀️

This wasn’t a perfect book by any means, and I didn’t like the “bully romance” element of it, but something about it spoke to me, I guess. I absolutely tore through it and couldn’t put it down, and I enjoyed the characters and their chemistry. I’m also a huge sucker for secret pining in an enemies to lovers situation, or secret pining in any romance, so that really did it for me. The setting was fun too.
