Elemental Phases #4

Treasure of the Fire Kingdom

Rate this book
Kingu has spent his entire existence enslaved. Now that he’s finally free, the only thing he wants is a mate. So he decides to steal himself one. All he’s searching for is a quiet, uncomplicated woman, who won’t run when she sees his monstrous face. Instead, he gets a chatty little blonde lunatic who thinks she’s a warrior.

Raised by the supernatural mafia, Hope, of the Fire House idolizes her bombastic family and follows their unconventional views of romance. Fire Phases see kidnapping as foreplay, gladiator fights as ideal dates, and monsters as the pinnacle of masculine hotness. She’s thrilled with her surly abductor! Sure, Kingu seems wary of her cheeriness and colorful clothes, but Hope knows that they’re soul mates. Now, she just needs to show him that he has a soul.

‧͙⁺˚*・༓☾ Ever wanted to read a book where, when the FMC gets kidnapped and held hostage by the MMC in his castle—and he flat-out refuses to let her go—she doesn’t spend her time trying to escape and slowly developing Stockholm syndrome? Instead, she makes herself comfortable and starts seducing him. Like, "Oh nooo, I’m trapped with this dangerous man who looks at me like I’m the only thing in the world… what ever shall I do?" Cue her tossing her hair and making him fall even harder.

‧͙⁺˚*・༓☾ A book where, when the MMC is channeling that classic touch her and die energy, being all possessive and broody, the FMC is fanning herself like: “Damn, he’s attractive.” A book where the MMC is a literal monster and she knows it—and she knows that she has him wrapped around her little finger. He’d burn kingdoms for her, and she’s sipping tea like, “Yes, love, now kill him for me.”

I like books where the FMC knows she’s powerful. And likes it. She enjoys being the sole obsession of this terrifying, dangerous monster who hates everyone but her. When he offers to kill someone for her, she’s like, “Aw, he’s so romantic.”

That’s her. That’s Hope.

‧͙⁺˚*・༓☾ She reminded me of my ten-year-old self, standing on the balcony every night, staring at the stars, waiting for Peter Pan yes, I had a huge crush on that boy sue me to swoop in and whisk me off to Neverland. And unlike Wendy, I was sure I wouldn’t have come back. Still mad about that, by the way. Like, girl. Stay with the cute boy. Be magical. Why come back to a world where you have to study every freaking day and still fail your mocks and get disappointed Asian-parent-stares?

Ahem.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

‧͙⁺˚*・༓☾ Moving on from this cute little unnecessary tangent, Hope is a member of the Fire House. That means, her outlook on romance is a little... weirder than most people. In her... culture?... well, courtship is all about kidnapping the love of your life and chaining them to bed and freaky stuff like that. And Hope is that girl who preferred the Beast more than the prince he eventually turns into. same girl

‧͙⁺˚*・༓☾ And when I tell you the MMC, Kingu, is a monster, I don't mean that as, like an insult to his personality—not that he has a sparking personality, but that ain't the main issue. I mean... he's an actual monster. His body is that of a regular man, but his face resembles a dragon and his fingers and arms are very scaly.

Like a reptile. (ಥ﹏ಥ)

‧͙⁺˚*・༓☾ I'll be honest with y'all I don't vibe with the way he looks not to appearance shame or anything but I didn't think he wouldn't look like a human when I started this and no I did not look at the cover beforehand nor did I read the summary, my bad okay?!. But that's why I'M not the FMC, Hope is! She finds him attractive as heck—girlie got weird choice in men but okay I'll let it pass. I mean, look—the beast was cute and fluffy but this one's... scaly. I keep thinking about crocodiles I can't—(;´༎ຶД༎ຶ`)

Where was I? (Seriously, I keep getting sidetracked.)

Right. Hope. She’s sparkly, sunshine-y, blonde, and formidable. She’s got a spine of steel. Gets her way every time. Knows how to work Kingu like a fiddle. Holds grudges. Refuses to come back when he’s mean until there’s proper, satisfying groveling. Queen behavior.

‧͙⁺˚*・༓☾ Take this interaction between them for example:

✧.* Kingu, trying to be scary: “ʏᴏᴜ ᴛᴏᴜᴄʜ ᴀɴᴏᴛʜᴇʀ ᴍᴀɴ, ʜᴏᴘᴇ, ᴀɴᴅ ɪ ᴡɪʟʟ ᴋɪʟʟ ʜɪᴍ. ʏᴏᴜʀ ꜱᴏᴜʟ ʙᴇʟᴏɴɢꜱ ᴛᴏ ᴍᴇ.”
✧.* Hope, not having it: “ʏᴏᴜ ᴡᴏɴ’ᴛ ɢᴇᴛ ᴏɴᴇ ᴅᴀᴍɴ ᴛʜɪɴɢ ꜰʀᴏᴍ ᴍᴇ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ɪ ᴅᴏɴ’ᴛ ɢɪᴠᴇ ꜰʀᴇᴇʟʏ. ɪꜰ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡᴀɴᴛ ᴍʏ ꜱᴏᴜʟ, ʏᴏᴜ’ʀᴇ ɢᴏɴɴᴀ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴛᴏ ꜰɪɴᴅ ʏᴏᴜʀ ᴏᴡɴ ᴀɴᴅ ɢɪᴠᴇ ɪᴛ ᴛᴏ ᴍᴇ ʀᴇᴛᴜʀɴ.”

‧͙⁺˚*・༓☾ I do think the romance was very insta—an unfortunate problem that's pressed into every other romance novel. But I suppose I can cut the author some slack because the MCs are fated mates. So the moment they meet each other they are supposed to feel this pull towards the other from within them or some shit like that. Gotta thank my lucky stars they didn't jump into bed immediately, at least—not for lack of trying on her part.

But Kingu is a very sensitive, very insecure boy who thinks he's ugly (winces, oops sorry buddy), not to mention he kidnapped her so he thinks that Hope, like any normal person, would be scared and mad and plotting her escape—not… cheerfully vibing in her new bedchambers.

‧͙⁺˚*・༓☾ While she’s being all casual and forward, and his poor monster brain is doing backflips like:

✧.* “Why did she look at me for half a second longer than usual?”

✧.* “She’s relaxed… is she lulling me into a trap?”

✧.* “OH MY GOD DID SHE JUST HOLD MY HAND?”

‧͙⁺˚*・༓☾ While this is a very cute and hilarious novel (take my word for it babes, this novel is absolutely hilarious), the downside is, this is the fourth book in the series and I did NOT read the previous ones—I liked the premise of this when I came across a Reddit thread that recommended it, so I was initially just planning to read this and bail—therefore there are so many characters and stuff other than romance going on that my itty bitty brain could not cope with. Not did this book have POVs of both MCs but also a couple other characters I didn't give two shits about—so of course I skipped those chapters! I have exams coming up, can't afford to waste time <3

But now I'm interested in the other books. Yikes. So I'm gonna read those. Out of order. Yeah that's me. Breaking rules and being a rebel. Cuz I'm too much of a goody two-shoes to ever rebel IRL

Oh wow. For someone who wasn't originally going to write a review on this cuz she thought she had nothing to say, I sure blabbered a lot.

RE- Read (4th Jan 2020) 4.5 Sparkling Stars

This remains one of my favourite reads in the series, the characters, charm and humour found in the book ensured that during a very long, early morning train ride, I was able to escape into a different world.

4 STARS

An enjoyable read which has the humour and quirkiness I've come to expect and enjoy from Gannon. It also gives us an insight in to the delightfully crazy Fire phases.

This author brings a unique take on paranormal romance that surely boggles the mind ! Her ideas about Elementals and their various “Houses” features a mind blowing assortment of characters who inhabit this crazy world both here and in other pocket dimensions.
This story sets the scene by introducing Hope, who suffered heartbreaking events that two years ago changed her life and indeed took the lives of so many Elementals. Those who considered themselves virtually immortal were cruelly betrayed and now the few remaining of the “Houses” struggle to cope. We catch up to Hope as she stumbles upon Kingu a God with a very particular agenda on his mind ! Hope is nothing like the sort of female that Kingu wants but she just might be everything he needs.
Ok where do I start ? The numerous characters in this story are a kaleidoscope that would definitely blind anyone lucky ( or is that unlucky? ) enough to meet them. Those of the House of Fire are spending a lot of time at Mayport Beach , Florida where they are turning the lives of ordinary residents upside down when they realise that their precious Hope has gone missing . Hope just took a wrong or perhaps a right turn because she’s ended up exactly where she really needs to be . Although I should point out that she’s sentenced to death by gladiatorial combat but hey she thinks she’s a Warrior so let battle commence! With so many ulterior motivates and plans in play you can bet that Hope will do what she does best and that dear reader is shine !
I admit that this is my first book by this author so it took me a while to work out how the characters connected but that didn’t stop me eagerly turning the pages. Yes it’s a romance with the somewhat jinxed Hope and monstrous Kingu as our main characters but it’s also very much an ensemble piece . You will be surprised, be amused, perhaps even go back and reread the odd sentence in amazement but you will not be bored. I rolled my eyes at times, I was totally gobsmacked too but then again I consider myself to be sane which perhaps cannot be said for all of these characters. One thing for sure I definitely finished this story with a smile on my face.

There's nothing I love better than a book where all the usual genre tropes are absolutely skewered and left for dead. Gannon does that fabulously here (as she does in pretty much all her books, but here specifically).

Add to that a virgin hero and virgin heroine, bucketloads of humour, a fascinating plot, on-point relationship/character development, and quite possibly the best family dynamics in existence.

The absolute best of the series so far!!!!!!!
Fantastic mcs! I loved both Kingu's monster looking ass and Hope's sweet, bubbly craziness
I could've done without Kingu doubting the connection so much but considering his seriously tragic history I can't blame the guy
The humour I expect from this author shone through in this one, I had lots of laugh out loud moments
I loved how she got him accustomed to kisses 😍
Loved it

The first half of this book was absolutely hilarious. The second half was a bit mushy and boring but I'm glad I didn't skip this one. Kingu and Hope made an adorable couple. I really liked Hope's family as well. I love a big cast of characters and the Fire Phases are literally insane. Very lovable, indeed. All of Cassandra Gannon's books are easy to read, cute and so funny. On top of that, I love her characters even though most of them are lunatics. I just wish these books were edited more so there wouldn't be so many errors with the writing.

Goliath sized unlovable monster meets his quirky sunshine-y fated mate. Besotted monstery MMC who can't believe this perfect woman would actually like him but is determined to keep her regardless. (Spoiler, she wants to be kept).

It’s very rare that a book has me sobbing on the prologue. Good work on the author for effectively establishing the characterization of the Fire Phases. In previous books, I bought into what the phases from the other Houses thought about the Fire Phases: murdering, temperamental psychos. In this prologue, in both words and actions, we see that the Fire Phases are more than that. They may be trigger-happy at times, but they are also passionate, loyal people. During the scene where they surround Oberon’s death bed is sad and even funny with how they argue about what book to read him while he’s in a coma and endearing because it’s clear that this is a close-knit family. They are debatably my favorite House so far, which is certainly something I have not been expecting. On the other hand, I have to say this has been my least favorite romance – just a little more boring compared to the others.

This is so bad, but I keep on imagining Kingu like King Kong, even though he’s supposed to be more half dragon/half human-looking. Fortunately, I started imagining him as he should be as the book went on.

Entertaining, lighthearted, fun story with a strong, possessive, wounded soul-type H. The H doesn't believe h could ever love him but he's all about her. She is IT for him. The h is likeable and sweet. There were many ridiculous lol moments. It was light on the smex side - only one scene (about 70% into the story) where they "do the deed" with a couple other scenes of foreplay before the "main event".

There were quite a few typos, incorrect word placement etc. It wasn't overwhelming but at times I had to reread sentences to understand what the author meant and that was annoying.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and will read more from this author.

This book was funny, romantic, and just wholesome. The family dynamic was brilliant and the relationship development was pretty good, though it is more insta love. I had not read the previous books, so there were quite a few chapters on potential characters and previous characters, which was confusing. Since the draw for me was the Fire phase, I am going to jump into Teja's and Sullivan's book!

Cassandra Gannon is one of my favorite new authors. What I love about her stories are the characters, and most especially the humor. Many paranormal romance novels are all about the angst....I get it, the drama, and I can get into it, but this book with its whimsical heroine and unlikely hero is just too much fun! Keep them coming Cassandra!

Finished this in 24 hours and I loved those damn Fire Phases so much, I will definitely be coming back to read this one. Please don’t judge my 5 stars. This book is riddled with typos, and it’s not like great literature but I enjoyed it so much. Its placement in the series is a real breath of fresh air. We are mostly interacting with a whole new set of characters here and the stakes are way lower. A break from the world ending drama of the book before this and (based on the epilogue) the book which follows this one.

It’s a great monster romance with the typical monster who believes no woman could ever love him and the woman just being head over heels for him. She’s so patient and sweet and teasing in her attempts to woo his sad little soul into believing she really does love him. Don’t get me wrong, he is GONE for her. But he is holding himself back (pretty unsuccessfully lol) because he believes she couldn’t love him/deserves more.

Her family, the Fire Phases, and her personality from being raised by them is just the absolute star of this book though. It’s what took it from 4 to 5 stars. That last star is all for them.

SUPER Safe. DUAL VIRGINS. Thank Gaia, Cassandra. She usually just has a virgin heroine. The dual virgin dynamic works really well here. FMC is not at all shy or “virginal,” she just happens not to have had PIV sex yet. Monster MMC has just basically never interacted with anyone else. He was waiting for his powers to tell him which woman was his.

Kingu refuses to believe Hope is his match/soulmate or that she even likes him because he is a monster.

What I enjoyed:
* Hope is an adorable warrior with luck powers
* Kingu, poor guy was in misery for thousands of years because of his mother. So glad he got a happy ending.
* The Fire House is very entertaining. I look forward to seeing them corrupt Kingu.
* Ominous ending

What could have been better:

This one had potential to be a five-star read, especially with the plot and furthering of the universal storyline. My main issue was Kingu constantly feeling as though he didn’t deserve Hope. This is simply a personal pet peeve of mine with any and all romance novels, when the mmc pushes away for the entire book because of low self-worth. It makes total sense with Kingu’s character, considering how evil his mother was and how he grew up. But at some point, I’m always like “Dude. Piss or get off the pot already.”

Also the editing (again). This one seemed to have more spelling/grammar errors than the others had, which is unfortunate.

Hope is one of my favorite fmc so far in this series. I absolutely loved her and the Fire phases in her family. I loved the backstory of Star phases and I loved that she kicked Kay’s ass. Well, not literally. She just drained her until she died, so Kay is no more! Now, with her and Parald gone, we’ll be getting some new baddies for this Elemental world and I can’t wait.

The epilogue in this one blew my mind. WHAT DOES IT MEAN. Who is this time phase and what does she do in the past? And reading about Job dying (in the epilogue’s future timeline, does not happen in this book), broke my heart. Just thinking of him being gone… 😭💔 But we apparently have this Daphne who will undo it? I’m very intrigued!

I’ve never read a more engaging, laugh out loud, and unpredictable fantasy story. 🙌🏼🙌🏼 It has everything you could want and then more! Kingu is obviously my favorite hero ever 🖤 and Hope is the same. Their chemistry is so freaking amazing 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 how did I go so long without reading this???

The story takes place in the elemental realm. Essentially any elements here on earth are thanks to the phases 🌏🌏. Hope is a fire phase 🔥 but not really. She was adopted by them and is undeniably adored. But she’s also uniquely herself. Hope dresses in bright sparkles, is thicker than a snicker, and is “jinxed”. Nothing at all like the fire phases. But they are clannish and revere their treasure. 🫰🏼

Meanwhile Kingu has survived being enslaved for a thousand years. His mother was the god of khaos and a true sadist. 😡😡😡Kingu got all of her abuse and degradation. But when she’s put into a coma he escapes. 🐉💨And all he wants is to find his one. Hope knows from the moment she sees him that Kingu is her guy. 🤭

Hope is turned on by monsters. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 She loves gore and cursing. She’s got the chaotic and violent interests associated with the fire phases. 🔪🔥But Kingu cannot wrap his head around her seemingly innocent exterior and how she could love him. He is so damaged and vulnerable. Constantly worried about rejection. Yet he also is hilarious. His wit is dry. His mind obsessed with Hope. He’s everything you want in a hero. 🖤🖤🖤

Honestly the writing style is what made the book. The first chapter is a little slow but it is so worth the rest of the book. It lays the foundation of the entire story 🤌🏼 anddddd the book had me laughing throughout it. It’s truly magnificent.

What I liked:
Virgin couple
Fated mates 🫶🏼🫶🏼
Subplot
Backup characters
Fantasy ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥
World building
Sort of dragon hero
Strong AF heroine 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Vulnerable hero
Hero god
Claiming marks
The writing
The humor
The sense of family and community

There’s not a thing I would change about this book ♥️

“You think to leave me?”  He arched a brow and drank from his goblet like they were discussing the weather.  No.  More unconcerned than that.  The weather from last Tuesday, maybe.  “You think I’d let you?”

------

“I’m not likely to forget you, Hope.  I’ve waited for you for so many years that the longing is a part of me.”

------

“You touch another man, Hope, and I will kill him.”  The threat was ice cold.  “Your soul belongs to me.”

She stopped at the top of the steps and glared back down at him.  “You won’t get one damn thing from me that I don’t give freely.  If you want my soul, you’re gonna have to find your own and give it to me return.”

------

“You really are the greatest warrior I’ve ever met.”  Hope said quietly.

He glanced down at her, surprised to see she was serious.  “Because I am going to help these idiots?”

“Because your instinct is to protect people, even though no one’s ever protected you.”  Hope gazed into his eyes.  “How do you not see that you have a soul?”

------

“Kingu’s eyes stayed fixed on her face as he tried to keep himself in check.  He looked enraptured.  “Every dream I’ve ever had has been about you.  A thousand years before you were even born, I was dreaming of you.”  Hands slid through her hair, like he was trying to absorb the feel of it right through his skin.  “Before I knew your name or the color your eyes.”  He gave a sound of total blissful surrender as her teeth scrapped along his skin.  “Back when it would have been so much easier to just give up and surrender everything I am, dreaming about you kept me alive.  Everything I am is you.”

I LOVE THIS BOOK! Every page, every line, every letter!

Treasure of the Fire Kingdom was way mushier than I thought possible with this series. I mean the previous books haven't been slacking in the overtly sweet romance but this one was a step beyond that.

The plot itself doesn't seem to have any other purpose than just showing Kingu and Hope's romance. There are just glimpses of things that counts towards the overall arc of the series. Even if the book wanted to focus on the romance only, there is still not much content to show as a story. Neither of the main characters have any real opposition towards the relationship, there is no varying push-pull developments to denote a start-middle-end. The majority of the content revolves around the inner insecure turmoil of Kingu and a little of the same from Hope. The constant tortured, I-am-not-worthy or sappy dialogue exchange when either of them said things like that was the most content for this romance. There is being sweet and then there is cringe.

As characters, Kingu doesn't have much dimension beyond his one dimensional past. Fine, he hasn't seen anything else but even Hope for all her quirkiness doesn't have many scenes to display it after the initial ones like the gladiator fight. The side characters are the only thing that I enjoyed in this book. Fire House characters and their humour filled interactions were fun and cuts through some of the heavily sappy conversations of the main characters.

Unlike the last book where the end comes to a neat resolution with a nice fight scene, this one lacks that and instead has a quick fix end that just doesn't even try to be spicy. Meh, I'm hoping all of that action is being saved up for Chason's book.

This is part of a series that I have NOT read which may be why I didn't like it nearly as much as others seem to. I'll confess that I didn't like it at all until nearly the 75% mark where Kingu began to grow on me. Since I never read the first four books (not recommended) It made the world building seem kind of lazy. There was a bit too much jumping around and it made the timeline a bit vague to me. This world seems adjacent(?) to the human one where Elementals have different dimensions based on their element. Fire House, Cloud, Color, Water etc. Each person of a house is noted by a strip of color in their hair related to that house. Except Hope. Hope has NO stripe of color and seems to be a half human/half elemental hybrid orphan. No one knows which house she's from but she was adopted and loved by the violent, warrior, Fire house. Hope gets kidnapped and is taken to the God Kingu. He was tortured by his mother and disfigured by a curse with the look of a dragon monster. Quirky Hope adores the monster look and love ensues after some self doubting angst. The dialogue and interaction were a bit frenetic. There is a lot of snark and pop culture references very much in the style of Shelly Laurenston. I wasn't the biggest fan but you can gauge how much you might like this story based on that.

I love how quickly this series is put out because I just can't get enough of it. The characters and world are completely fabulous and fascinating. This isn't your typical paranormal story but it is definitely worth a try. A lot happens in these stories but you never get lost. I love the consistency. Each story picks up where the last one left off. You still see the characters from previous books. They're never just dropped like they didn't exist, which happens in some stories. Definitely give this series a try. I can't wait til the next story comes out.
