Cally Taylor lives in Bristol with her boyfriend, baby son and their ridiculously large DVD/book/music collection. She shares her 'study' with the washing machine and surf board and writes her novels in any spare moments she can squeeze in between the day job and her social network addiction . She started writing fiction in 2005 and her short stories have won several awards and been published by a variety of women's magazines. Her debut novel Heaven Can Wait has been translated in 13 languages and was voted 'Debut Novel of the Year' by chicklitreviews.com and chicklitclub.com. Home for Christmas is her second novel.
Cally's third book, psychological suspense novel "The Accident" (written as CL Taylor) will be published by Avon HarperCollins in April 2014 and in the US as 'Before I Wake' in June 2014.
Cally's CL Taylor alter ego is on Goodreads too. Do friend her!
Whilst I know a lot of people are not keen on short stories I love them! They always come in handy when waiting for appointments, delays and are sometimes just the thing you need when short on time. This collection of short stories is probably one of the best compilations I have ever read. All the stories were excellent not a single poor one included, I only wish the book had been longer. But not the stories...they were perfect.
I really enjoyed this collection of 16 short crime stories, which covered topics such as domestic abuse, murder and neighbourhood problems etc. My favourite short story was The Other Girl, about a girl held in captivity which was hard to read about and made you really feel for the girl. There were also some humourous elements throughout, as well as some gruesome ones. Cally has a great storytelling ability, which manages to get you hooked in quickly and so each short story was very engaging, as well as thrilling.
As a fan of this author's books, I was excited to find this collection of short stories, where the author cleverly creates the tension and intrigue in a concise and effective mini narrative. Despite the shorter length, the stories still succeeded in giving a wealth of information in a few short lines that engaged me and the ending often surprised me too, which I think demonstrates her skill as a psychological thriller writer. These would be perfect as examples in a writing workshop or for English GCSE students to learn and practise the skills for longer pieces.
This was a really good book with great stories by Cally, especially when sometimes you just don't have the time to commit to picking up a book and finding concentration!
I’d rate it a 4.5. I loved almost all of the stories, a few were not my taste BUT even those were very good. Will be reading more of the author for sure.
