An introduction to feminist film theory as a discourse from the early seventies to the present. McCabe traces the broad ranging theories produced by feminist film scholarship, from formalist readings and psychoanalytical approaches to debates initiated by cultural studies, race and queer theory.
This is a well-informed (if not, slightly out of date) book on feminist discourse in relation to film and cinema. Feminist Film Studies: Writing the Woman into Cinema by Janet McCabe is a little book chock full of information. It does its best to showcase intersectionality when it comes to feminism. There's a chapter on race (Black) and a chapter on sexuality (lesbians). A major reason why I say that this book is slightly dated is because of how much things have changed regarding feminism. There's a lot of focus on second-wave feminism and even though this book was written in 2005, so much has changed even just a decade later due to the meteoric rise of social media. I would be interested in a 20th-anniversary edition of this book because of how much the online space changed feminism. This book doesn't exactly tell anyone anything they don't already know but it names some fantastic essays, books, and periodicals to hunt down.
helpful survey of many of the issues relevant to feminist film criticism. very broad though, but a good place to learn where to go for more in depth work.
This is a really excellent discussion of feminist film theory. I only gave it four instead of five stars because it doesn't have an index (what academic text doesn't have an index?!?!)
