Mermaid on Heels: A Little Mermaid Retelling

Rate this book
What if Little Mermaid finds someone who can breathe underwater like her and she follows him to the forbidden surface to uncover his mystery?

Princess Liriya of Pearltuna had long anticipated her eighteenth birthday. However, when a mysterious mermaid named Faelina—who claims to be her half-sister—crashes her celebration, everything changes. Faelina's demand for a family artifact leads to a dark enchantment that forces Liriya and her sisters to flee their kingdom.

As they seek refuge in a distant sea, one day, Liriya happens upon a mysterious human who can breathe underwater.

Following him to the forbidden surface to uncover his mystery, she eavesdrop on his conversation with his cousin and learns that he is the soon-to-be king of the land, has to pick a bride following his coronation, and desires for a mermaid bride.

Shocked at her discovery but thrilled about the surface, Liriya brings her sisters up that night. There, they discover their new transformation power and then go about the land, where they learn about an upcoming ball at the palace.

Driven by a strange attraction to meet the prince and the illogical desire to uncover his mystery, the last thing Liriya expects at the ball is he recognizing her as a mermaid and asking her to be one of the elites for the bride. However, with her duty to overthrow Faelina tugging at her heart, can she give him, or even herself, the chance at discovering what could blossom between them?

Karen Daliath is a Christian young adult who loves her Creator more than anything. She loved reading since she could remember whether they were stories or interesting news articles. Though growing up, fiction conquered her full attention, and she has now barely time for non-fiction.

Unlike most authors and her own sister, Karen wasn’t a fan of writing until the Covid-19 pandemic. She started her writing journey on Wattpad with fanfictions in 2020 and then made her debut on Amazon in 2022. Now, writing is the second-best, most beautiful part of Karen’s life she can’t live without.

Karen writes closed-door romances, both contemporary and fairytale, through which she hopes to share the love of her Christ. She lives with her younger sister (Katelyn Daliath, author of RED ROSE OF ORDELIA) and her parents. When she is not writing, she is lost in a book to escape reality, singing, having bookish talks with her sister, or helping her mom around the house with cooking and cleaning.

Update: I've read 5 Little mermaid retellings in the last 2 months and this is still the best!

Sweet, swooney romantasy.

Liriya, the crown princess of Pearltuna, receives the shock of her life on her eighteenth birthday. Her evil siren half-sister steals the powerful family artifact and mesmerizes the kingdom. Separated from their parents and cast from the kingdom, Liriya and her younger sisters, Ella and Sessa, struggle to live in an ocean cave, until the day Liriya spies a human man swimming when she's gathering food.

Prince Luke of Lectoria is soon to be crowned King and must choose a bride immediately after. He secretly longs to marry a mermaid, but his search has been fruitless, until now.

Most of the story revolves around Luke and Liriya getting to know one another. He chooses her as one of the 6 elites of the Bridal Selection. But eventually, Liriya's past catches up with her.

I love Luke and Liriya! The dance! And the sisters' interactions are so fun and genuine. Cedric, Luke's cousin, and Bianca, Liriya's dear friend, round out a delightful cast of characters.

Clean story with some hand holding, touching of hair and cheek, and swooney kisses. Christian, with praises of the Creator and following his inspiration sprinkled in.

I received an arc copy. All if the opinions are my own.

A very well done retelling of a classic tale with some different element! I had trouble putting it down while I was reading it.
Mermaid on Heels does well in retelling Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale, but putting a twist on it. Unlike the original tale, there are pursuits of revenge, bonding with the prince while having her voice, a vengeful outcast sister, learning about the human world, and much more. Karen Daliath delivers a retelling of the story that focuses more on trust, the love between siblings, and deception over lies.
I very much enjoyed reading it. The mutual love between Luke (the Prince Eric of this story) and our protagonist develops over time, and the pacing is relatively well-done. Some twists and turns come a little out of the blue. Yet, the relationship is compelling enough that I can forgive those.
I highly recommend this book for fairy tale lovers and those who want a good Little Mermaid retelling. Definitely give it a 5/5!
I was given an advance copy. All my opinions above are solely my own, not bought or bribed. It was an honor to read this story.

Nostalgia! This story brought me back to my childhood watching The Little Mermaid movies and swimming in the pool as much as I could.

I enjoy reading these fantasy and fairytale stories written by Christians, able to enjoy a good story without worrying about its content. (For any curious, there are no curse words, and the romance never reaches past kissing, though it is intense in spots. Prepare for diabetes from the sweetness 😂)

The story itself is an interesting twist, full of surprises and characters you will love to death! I know I had a favorite from nearly the first chapter 😉 The bonds between the characters and the personalities are all wonderful, and I already want more!

I love fairytale retellings and this little mermaid one was no exception. 🧜‍♀️

I found the writing to be a little disconnected sometimes as if the author couldn’t quite decide what tone she wanted to take - it fluctuated between more formal and then too informal a few times too many, especially in the prologue. Specifically, I recall the conversation between Liriya and Faleana in the prologue felt a little forced and jilted. I feel like the narration and dialogue did improve as the story progressed though.

I loved the plot and all the characters, especially the relationship between Liriya and her sisters. And I think the nickname “angelfishes” is adorable. 🐠

As a Catholic, I appreciated the references to the Creator but there was a few too many for my liking to the point where it just felt unnecessary and I did not think added anything to the plot or story, especially since no religious or belief system was set up in the book.

I am not a huge fan of insta-love and would have liked to have seen a little more depth to Luca and a deeper explanation to his reasoning for wanting to marry a mermaid aside from the fact that his mother was one. I thought the development of his relationship with Liriya was done well though and Luca was quite the romantic poet.

Overall, I thought it was a very sweet and unique take on our favorite little mermaid and an excellent debut novel from the author. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

* I received an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

I grew up loving Barbie and Disney princess movies, especially the ones with fairies and mermaids, however in my native culture here in African, mermaids are often depicted as angry goddesses of the seas and rivers who liked to unleash wrath on humans (Quite like the villain, Faelina, in this retelling) so at a point, I stopped liking anything mermaid related. However, this story just helped to let me see that there is more to fairytales than evil beings. The story was very well crafted and made me realise that all of creation is amazing and though the existence of mermaids is still sort of a myth to human, I now like to think there is a hint of truth to this.

Although all I know of the original little mermaid story is that there is a tragic ending (I'm not talking about the popular Disney version), this story had every twist well placed. The tension and romance was palpable and wonderful to read.
It was also really beautiful to I liked the relationship and links between all the characters. The friendship and family bond were beautiful to read. My favourite character was King Luke (Yup, he is the dream guy of every lady). Even though he had obvious flaws, he was as transparent as crystal Waters. I loved how he was so down to earth even though he was already a ruling king.
Liriya's sisters were absolutely adorable too and reminded me of my own siblings.

I seriously can't wait to see what happens to Faelina and Dryan since the book ends on a cliffhanger sort of note. And yes, the ending was very satisfying.

PS: As at the time of posting this review, I somehow got linked to a friend of mine with whom I watched the human version of the Little Mermaid. It was super cool and made this story make more sense.

Thanks for this beautiful story. I enjoyed every bit of it.

I just finished this book.

To be honest there's only good thing I could talk about. From the pure and true love of the Liriya and Luke, to my favourite bichering couple Ella and Cedrik.

As a fairytale retelling I just feared the ending of the book as I know the origional story quite well. But the author has made it more than just that, there's a whole story and everything is just perfectly placed.

Mermaid on Heels by Karen Daliath is a cute and sweet retelling of The Little Mermaid, but with unexpected twists. I love retellings and that is why I wanted to read this book.

It starts really mysterious, as Liriya sees a human underwater and it seems like he can also breath under water, just like her. She is curious and follows him, and that’s where the story gets off to a great start. Liriya is a lovely character, easy going but very curious and when you read what has happened to her and her family, she grows on you and you want the best for her. She is very loyal to her sisters and family.

As it is a Little Mermaid story and if you know the story, you know she will get on land. But Karen Daliath made this retelling all her own. She made it a very interesting and magical story, with a lovely flowing and easy to read writing style. You can see the Mermaid story, but Mermaid on Heels is a story with unexpected twists and turns, and a great plot concerning several sea myths, which I loved very much. The other characters are wonderful as well, some you love and some you hate. And even the most hatefull of them all, the one who put the story in motion, somehow you feel for her too. And that is a job well done by Karen Daliath. In this book there is tension, betrayal, suprises I did not see coming, some humor, and of course romance.

If you love retellings with a twist, then this is the book for you. It’s a first book in a series and I can’t wait to read the sequel.

A wonderful mermaid tale!
Mermaid on Heels is a book that pleasantly surprised me, the story of Liriya isn't just a simple retelling of The Little Mermaid but a tale about family, sisterhood, faith and eventually true love.
Liriya is a great protagonist, she is responsible, gentle and kind, a good sister and a dutiful princess. Her relationship with her sisters is so wholesome, their interactions so endearing. Ella's fiery temper is quite the opposite of Liriya's, I enjoyed her banter with Cedric, Luke's cousin. Sessa brought all the cheerfulness of a younger sister and Bianca, their friend from the land, was also a great addition to the story.
Luke is everything a prince should be and he can breathe underwater! Liriya's curiosity about him was perfectly reasonable. I did think they fell for each other rather too quickly, however as they spent time together their infatuation gradually turned into true love. I loved how he nicknamed her his"little mermaid", so romantic and at the same time a clever homage to the fairy tale.
The villain wasn't the typical sea witch, Faelina is the half-sister of Liriya and a character full of secrets. We aren't shown how she learned about her heritage and who incited her to hate her father but it seems that Faelina will have her own redeeming story so I hope the answers will be in the next book.
Mermaid on Heels is an amazing book full of captivating characters, a perfect reading for the lovers of mermaid tales.

Unapologetically swoonworthy!
I loved this so much, it's such an endearing and charming romantasy.
As a little mermaid inspired story this ticks all the boxes, there's the sweet love story between the prince and princess, the calculating villain, the mystery and magic of the mermaid v human world, and lots of drama.
There are so many dreamy moments and I found all the characters wonderful, even feeling sorry for the villain.
I love the bond that Liriya has with her sisters, her friendship with Bianca, and the way she cares about everyone.
Luke is full of surprises and the sweet dreamy Royal everyone swoons over with his kindness and compassion.
The romance, suspense and tension is spot on, it has great twists, the plot is beautiful, and it flows so well that I could not put it down once I started.
Its a sweet and clean fairytale romance with a HEA, and perfect for a cosy romantic and nostalgic read.

I absolutely loved this retelling of The Little Mermaid! ‍♀️💗
The characters were very well written! They were very likable from the beginning except for Faelina, of course.
I love how Liriya's sisters are so supportive of her and how much they care about each other! 🥺💕
The plot was done exceedingly well as were the plot twists I wasn't expecting!!
I loved the romance, especially it being clean.
I loved how Karen Daliath incorporated some Christian aspects into the story! 🤍
The banter was hilarious especially between Ella and Cederic. 😂
Nearing the end of the book I couldn't put it down because I desperately needed to find out what happened next!
I highly recommend this book if you love The Little Mermaid! 🌊🧜‍♀️
I absolutely loved and enjoyed this book from start to finish! And if I'm being honest, I hated it when the story ended. 😢
A marvelous and wonderful rewrite of The Little Mermaid, Karen!! 👏😍

Sweet clean relationships

I like that this book not only focuses on romantic love but also the love of family and friends. There's an overall feeling of comfort in this book. The characters and story draw you in, and you want to know more. This book is clean in language and physical intimacy. I'd feel comfortable with a child reading it as kisses are the max "heat." There are some wording and phrases that are unfamiliar to me that could be errors or just language differences. It doesn't detract from the story, and unless you're particularly attentive to grammar, you may not even notice them. I didn't notice anything that could be potential triggers for anyone. I'd recommend this to literally anyone (any age) who enjoys reading fairytales.

I have to admit that fantasy is not my genre, but I will also admit I was intrigued by the title, and since I do love mermaids, well....I was truly surprised at how much I liked this story. If you like romance, relationships (familial ones especially), with a twist of fantasy, then Mermaid on Heels is for you. I understand this is the first of a series, and I'm already looking forward to the next installment.

cute story

This was a cute "Little Mermaid" retelling with a splash of "The Selection" by Kierra Cass. There were a couple of small holes here and there but I am looking forward to reading any spinoffs of the other characters!

Mermaid on Heels was engaging retelling of the Mermaid. I loved that there were some elements of the fairy tale but stood out from other retellings. The plot was creative and unique. There were surprising twists and turns that were intriguing. Liriya and Luke were adorable. I don’t always love the insta love tropes, however, I found this one to be charming. I felt like the relationship developed well and they really got to know one another. The romance was clean and never went past kissing. The sister dynamic was one of my favorite parts. The bond between Liriya and her sisters was sweet and full of trust. Cedric was my favorite. He had great comebacks! The banter between him and Ella was hilarious and sassy. Faelina was the perfect antagonist! I am hoping she will get a redemption story. This book was fantastic!
