Fantasy has kept a special place in her heart ever since she was only 7 years old, snuggling up to her sister and father as he read Lord of the Rings.
Now a soil scientist by day, writer by night, Inghild enjoys her days living off tea, dreaming up stories, and consuming a healthy dose of heart-pounding romantic fantasy.
This book follows Madalyn growing into her role as a princess of Rimdalir in times of war. I'm the strange one who is more into the journey and relationship parts of fantasy than the war and excitement parts, so I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did. It had some shocking twists I didn't see coming and left my heart in pieces.
A moving tale of love, duty, sacrifice, and a strong heroine with the heart of a true queen. I’m a big fan of the Balance series, and Madalyn is my favourite character, so reading Ishimin, which is told from Madalyn’s perspective, was a real treat. The story centres on the strained relationship between Madalyn and her husband, Jarle. In a true romantic fashion, the author takes us into the heart of their marriage. We share in the characters’ struggles as they’re trying to find their way back to each other - a journey that is heart-warming and gut-wrenching at the same time. The internal stakes are high, but so are the external ones, as Madalyn is forced to deal with an enemy that threatens everything she holds dear: her friends, her family, and her people. The war is looming on the horizon, and as the future queen, Madalyn is determined to save her beloved homeland. If you’re in the mood for a romantic fantasy with well-developed characters and a plot that will keep you turning pages, Ishimin might just hit the spot.
Just a quick review of one of my favorite writers, Inghild Økland.
In Book 3 of the Balance series, Princess Madalyn comes home from Lakari to find Eldaborg under siege by invaders from the icy north, and the fate of her family unknown. Navigating a treacherous landscape of wavering neighbors, ruthless invaders and unreliable friends, she must try to save her homeland while simultaneously seeking to save her relationship with a man she married more out of duty than love.
But will she have to sacrifice the one to save the other?
Inghild is a fantasy romanticist like no other. Narrating in scintillating prose that makes today’s trendy literary fiction sound like the phone book, she tells tales steeped in authentic Scandinavian myth and folklore that somehow skirt all the cliches and conventional tropes of the genre.
With “Ishimin” I think she has surpassed herself, pushing her characters to the very limits of their being. It’s exciting, romantic, unconventional, exquisitely written and at times downright magical.
Ishimin is a total gem! Five stars – I couldn't put it down. Madalyn's journey in the face of impending war is gripping, and the dynamics of her relationship with Jarle is beautifully done. The author's magic with words creates an enchanting world. Madalyn's character shines, and the folklore adds a brilliant touch. If you're into well-developed characters, clever dialogue, and romantic fantasy, Ishimin is a must-read.
Finally a happy ending for Madalyn!!! And I suppose I will finally accept Jarle as the best choice for her, lol. This was such a great adventure and way to end the series. :)
An exciting fantasy book! I have read all four books by Inghild Økland; all of them ate good, but this is the best! Fantasy books are usually not what I read but I could not stop reading this one; especially the last chapters kept me awake during the night
