Born in South London in 1887 as William Henry Pratt, Karloff emigrated to Canada in 1909 where he began touring Western Canada and the United States in various theatrical repertory groups. Arriving in Hollywood in 1919 Karloff began movie work as an extra, working his way to eventual international fame as the monster in Universal’s Frankenstein (1931). Karloff continued to work in film, on radio, television and stage until he died in 1969, aged 81.
