Daily Bread is Bible reading scheme was prepared by the young Scottish preacher R. M. M'Cheyne (1813-1843) in order that 'the whole Bible might be read by [his congregation] in the year, and all might be feeding in the same portion of the green pasture at the same time.'
The scheme, as originally set out, enables the Old Testament to be read once, and the New Testament and Psalms twice within a year, two chapters to be read by the family and two to be read 'in secret', i.e. individually.
Since its first compilation in 1842, it has been used extensively, both as the one year scheme as initially intended, or as a two-year scheme scheme by using the 'Family' readings in the first year; the 'Secret' readings in the second.
As in the original publication, the scheme is presented in a tabular format and is accompanied by an introduction and directions for use penned by Rev. M'Cheyne.
