The story begins as Daxx and his gaming Guild, made up of Grell and Qrysta, have just won the RPG Grand Championship and as soon as they win, all goes black. Daxx wakes in a new world, but now in the body of his gaming avatar. With nothing but basic gear and no magical knowledge he must make his way through this world trying to find his teammates and figure out what his quest is.
This story was slow-paced, dark, and I'll be honest for me it dragged. I'm used to LitRPG that is loaded with high-stakes LitRPG, progression-based fantasy where characters must master game mechanics to survive. For me this story failed to deliver the action, stats and progression I enjoy in my LitRPG.
I also felt that the characters were fairly shallow. We only get the barest amount of background knowledge about Daxx and his friends, Grell and Qrysta. We know that Daxx, IRL, was an widowed older man, who got into gaming to keep him entertained and fill his days. However, after he wakes up in his new younger body, he behaves like someone much younger, even juvenile. For these reasons, I didn't feel overly connected to the characters and didn't really care what happened to them.
I finished the story and would recommend this book, but for fans of darker, Epic fantasy where the journey is the point.
Just got our mitts on the New Rock, New Role audiobook narrated by the author, Richard Sparks. LOVED IT!!!
Unfolding events were deftly described with fantastic detail and clarity. We felt like we were making discoveries along with Daxx and his crew as they tried to make sense of their cosmic predicament.
Dialogue was truly original and we were pleasantly surprised by the unique and fun side treks. Worldbuilding was realistic which made for a fantastic adventure that left us fulfilled. The third act is a revelation and triumph! Congratulations to Mr. Sparks for this most unconventional and entertaining tale. Looking forward Book 2!
