So verdammt falsch.

I really didn't liked this book, but this doesn't mean that it is a bad book because everyone have their own tastes, yesterday I read a one star review of a book and what this person didn't liked about the book was what made me download it, so maybe what I didn't liked about this book will make someone else read it.

I read a lot of bully romances, and I don't have triggers, I have things that I like and don't like in a book. And this book have a lot of things that I don't like on bully romances and on RH.

Church is a terrible "hero" with no reedeming qualities at all, he kills small animals that are on their habitat not doing ill to anyone just because he can, he physically harms Sirena more than once, he harms his supposed brothers when they don't obey him, and even think about killing them when he sees them touch Sirena. Church is the definition of toxic person that you shouldn't want to be with the heroine even if this is a bully romance. He's probably the worst "hero" that I ever read about.

The fact that the author put Church to announce that he would get all of Sirena's first, made the story horrible, because the other boys couldn't get close to her, it took away the mystery of who she would have her first time with, her first kiss with. It also didn't read as a RH harem at all, because every interaction between the heroine and the guys was controled by only one of the guys. It was terrible the fact that Ashes and Stitches had to ask Church permission to do to Sirena what he was already doing.

Sin not liking Sirena just because she was a girl was shitty and boring (it is used in so many books), Stitches and Ashes was basically irrelevant because Church was the only one who could do something with Sirena.

The insta love/obsession was meh, they met her in one day and she became their whole "lives". Principal Sully was too much of a caricature, the same as the stepfather, it didn't felt like real people.

The four boys was so stupid in not having connected what happened to Sirena to Seth, the way that she reacted to him was all they needed to pay attention to and understand.

The Sirena and Bryce thing was annoying and didn't add anything to the story at all.

The way that this author talks about woman that is not the FMc is despicable, I'm sorry but we're in 2022, we shouldn't have to read about how a girl is a whore and her vagina is loose because she have been having sex with four guys while reading a RH where the FMC will be sleeping with those four guys. This is just mind blowing idiotic.

I read basically all the new contemporary RH novels by this author and her heoines are all kind of idiots, and her heroes are all the "same", there's always a leader that makes the story boring because he controls all the interactions between the heroines with the other guys of the harem. I don't know if I'll keep reading her books, they all frustrastes me and the drama is just too much.

Wendy's Syndrome for men, that are also 'a million shades' of violently insane — among other issues.

Winner of Morwen's prize for '1st Dark Romance that doesn't get my eyes to roll away into the heavens, and the rest of me bored into hell' 🥇

Sirena hasn’t spoken in eight years — since her best friend tried to kill her. When her new stepfather labels her a "mute demon," he ships her off to Chapel Crest — a religious school that’s actually more of a twisted asylum in disguise.

Enter the Watchers: Dante Church, Stitches, Sin, and Ashes—four dangerously gorgeous guys who make it their mission to make her scream.

The journey so far:

Look, this is probably not an objectively 5-stars book, but I'm gonna slap them on anyway, 'cause I had a blast reading this. 🤷‍♀️

Was it fun? Was it all I wished it would be and more?? HELL YES.
I feel I'm getting obsessed with this 👀🫢

Was it completely believable? No, but like 80%? I had no trouble ignoring the 20% my brain was raising questions about 🙂‍↔️
Did it still require some suspension of disbelief? Yes, ofc, but not so over the top to ruin my fun like the other dark romances I've read so far.

And talking about 'over the top', I suppose this won't be as the darkest thing some dark romance readers have read, but that's probably what makes it good. If it's just for shock effect, it makes no sense to me.

If you are already well-versed in — and probably half desensitized to — dark romance, this won't be the series to shock you (not yet at least... 👀).
If like me you've found yourself severely underwhelmed by your previous attempts in this genre, this might be the one that does it for you too!

Aside from a few (I found about five) typos (mostly likely due to the author rewriting the sentence and forgetting a bit of the old one in) I found the writing style pleasant and solid enough for once.
The pace was well balanced to keep my interest while building tension on a much needed slow burn with a few flares here and there.

Warning:
Cliffhanger ending (more books are available, but still...). Oh and, yes, check trigger warnings, I guess.

🔖"I think we got off on the wrong foot." He held his hand out "I'm Asher Valentine. I like to read and listen to music. I'm not a fan of spiders, but if you need one caught, I'd catch it for you. I have pyromania and set an entire grocery store on fire once. I have impulse control issues, among other things. But I'm not as bad as I used to be. I enjoy coffee, and I wear glasses when I read."

🔖"Breathe with me specter. We'll race to the end of our lives together, using our breath as the markers. And guess what? Death won't find either of us today, so match pace with me. Breathe. In. Out. Feel that?"

🔖"Hello, specter,"'I said.
She didn't shrink away from me as I expected.
"I've come to collect."

🔖"Don't be afraid," I cooed softly. "I'm only going to bring you to the other side of fear so you'll be invincible. How does that sound?" I moved my fingers away from her face and held my hand out to her. "Come."

🔖"Good girls don't come in bad boys' mouths and keep their boyfriend," I said into her ear. "I want you to break up with Andrews. That's over. Once you do, you'll belong to the watchers. We will claim you. I'm giving you the chance to do it on your own first, Do you understand me?"

🔖"Heard you popped one of your stepdad's eyeballs out with a fork and that's what got you sent here."
He let out a soft laugh. "Nah. Those are just rumors." He smiled at me. "I dug them both out with forks after I spiked his drink with my mother's sleeping pills. [...] I cooked those eyes to fucking perfection before I made him eat them. He passed out before he could get the second one down."

🔖"You said to hurry and get her food. That's nature's bounty, man. It was as fast as I could go, OK?" Ashes said indignantly. "Besides, I think she likes them [carrots]."
"It's like having a little alien baby," Stitches murmured, reaching out and wiping a bit of chocolate from her lip. "A little pet we have to figure out."

Pre-Read
I have other books I'm reading, that I'm enjoying, and that I really want to finish... BUT.
BUT this arrived today and I've been thinking about it for a bit.
It's also very different from the other books I'm reading so it's not really like cheating on those, right? 🥷 It's like having cravings for pizza when you have a perfectly good meal at home already 😅

The reason is also that I'm getting DESPERATE to find ONE Dark romance book I like. ONE. I need to know it's the other books that were boring and I'm not the old boring one😭😒🙄😫😮‍💨

PS: Fiza don't hate me if I get my wish, and like this so much I fall behind AGAIN on Misborn just as you resumed reading it. 🥹😅
______
Reason to buy:
Rachel told me there is a guy who eats people in this series. 👀
Literally.

I could get over the red-flag cover for it.
I haven't read the blurb yet, but it sounded like a good enough argument for considering it.

Arghhh..of course ended on a cliffy, but what a way to go out..Now I’m crazily wanting the next book.

This was so intense, nail biting at it's best, it wasn’t full on RH but just enough spice, was a wee bit dark which my black heart loved, unique when it came to the school of self medicated pupils. Each crazier than the other, all broken by society and as a last resort this is where they’re sent.

As usual we have the hotter than hot guys running the school ✔️ Church, Ashes, Sin and Stitches.
These guys are here for a reason, their family have put them here because they are a danger to society, their disorders vary but no matter what you don't want to come under their radar.

Throw a hot girl who doesn't speak into the mix and your asking for trouble. Sirena hasn't spoken for near on eight years when she suffered a tragic incident at the hands of her psychotic best friend. No one knows what really happened that day as she's not spoken a word since.

Now these guys have her on their radar and she'll be screaming their names. She's also the best secret keeper, the best kind of girl to have around.

Imagine if Kings of Quarantine and Royals of Forsyth University had a baby. This book would be that.

There were some eye roll inducing moments, like how all these men went crazy the moment they laid eyes on the main girl, someone who can’t speak or communicate in any form 🤦🏻‍♀️ But I’m willing to suspend my disbelief to a certain point while I wait for the next Duke book to come out 😅

One of the most intense and creative bully reverse harem romances I've read. Imagine a mental institution moonlighting as a parochial school -- and it has elements of each. But this one includes an elite group of Watchers: Church, Ashes, Wolfe/Stitches, who have now cast their eyes, desires, and unbalances onto Sirena. Then there is a childhood friend and then Sirena having self-selective mutism. Will she make a sound? This first book explores the school, develops the character, their rapports, all with sub-plots and twists at play.

Very much loved and enjoyed this story. More psychologically dark than thematically. Of course, there are mental disorders at play, but it does not contain the ritualistic horrors of an asylum, such as crafted experimentation, physical harm, etc. At least for now. Largely a school setting of power play tenebrous graveyard backdrop, and a tangible, crazed, build up of sexual tension.

The story was progressive, captivating -- I could not stop reading -- the mystery, the twist, the "oh no he didn't” moment. Spice was slow burn of electric sparks to fire. Character development was good, of particular note, the unreadable Seth as well as some intriguing side characters I'd love to read about in a spin off.

Simply excellent. Church! And I can't wait to discover more.

Note to self: When you can't fall asleep, maybe - just maybe, don't start a new book. Sleep went out the window and I completely devoured Church in the middle of the night.

Sometimes I'm weird and crave a bully to lover kind of romance. Not exactly sure why but I did, and I dove into this with zero regrets. After meeting Sirena, and the chapel boys, it was clear who she should and shouldn't trust. Mainly, Seth was a big no-no and everyone else had a green light.

The only problem is Sirena went through something very traumatic and is now mute. By choice though and everyone seems to think that's odd. The only person truly in her corner is her little sister. Which makes me super sad because Sirena was shipped off to this school and now her sister has to deal with their creepy stepfather alone. Her mother isn't exactly helpful and seems blind to how much of a jackass he is.

While at this school, Sirena ends up running into a group of boys: Church, Ashes, Sin, and Stitches. Now she was sort of told to steer clear of them, but you know - fate helped her land into their laps. Sort of. They are completely intrigued by her and quickly become obsessed (in a way). Of course, not everyone is on team Sirena which leads to a very frustrating cliffhanger.

I'm honestly so mad about what happened. I have no idea who exactly won from this bet either because of how it all ended. Secretly hoping the guys win, and not Seth, but that's just because I really hate the guy. Plus, I feel like Church might kill someone if they end up losing. Which, I wouldn't be mad if that was Seth's death.

Super excited for Ashes book! Pretty please come out soon.

The concept of this book interested me a lot, and it is definitely dark and depraved.

My problems however lie here;
-I hate almost all our main characters. They don’t seem redeemable and I’m all for morally grey heroes, but I can’t love a book if I dislike all of the main characters. I’ve read a lot of dark romances, a lot of bully romances… but these guys really are just not it. I’m talking literal abuse on their part. Our FMC is mute and traumatized. They really take advantage of this and I’m not a fan.
-Once again, the high school setting…. She’s meant to be in an institute FFS, you can make them a few years older. It’s more logical with their actions and it’s also less creepy to read.
-The slut shaming. It’s 2022. You’re writing books about these people having sex. I don’t want to read about these women being slut shamed so much like this. It’s annoying and it detracts from the story. The guys are literally obsessing over the FMC bc they want to fuck her. But women are the bad ones for wanting pleasure for themselves, especially in a place as awful as this? Fuck off🙄

With all of that said, I’ve given this 2/5 stars because the storyline and the cliffhanger at the end almost have me hooked enough to want to pick up the next book when it’s released. Not sure if I will, but I’m tempted.

Let’s Go to Church 😉

Let me preface this review by stating that I’m a psychologist. K.G. Reuss is absolutely incredible at portraying mental health issues. This book is no exception to that. Psychologists will often say that there is a fine line between sanity and insanity. This book shows that.

Gripping from page 1, you get introduced to Sirena and Seth at age 10. Seth and Sirena are best friends. However, very quickly, you will be introduced to a child’s descent into madness.

Sirena, a victim of her best friend trying to kill her, now suffers in silence. Literally. It’s been 8 years, since that fateful day, that she’s spoken or made a sound. Her evil Bible-thumping stepfather wants to send her to a state psychiatric facility that doubles as a school (Chapel Crest).

It is at Chapel Crest that she meets the Watchers: Church, Stitches, Sin, and Asher - the boys who rule. Here’s the twist: turns out Seth is also a student/patient at Chapel Crest.

With the Watchers and Seth both trying to claim her, let the games begin. To win: who can make her scream first?

This book ends on a cliffhanger and will definitely leave you wanting to fall to Ashes (book 2).

Seriously, though…this is a must-read.

My god this was an insane ride. Like, why do I read these kinda books 😂 I don’t read bully books too often, I always say I don’t like them. Then I pick one up and I am absolutely hooked. These four guys in this books were just horrible, and yet I couldn’t look away.
Here you have basically a religious school that acts like a mental institution/school. A mute FMC (due to some insane early trauma) and four guys that want her, and want to be the first to make her scream.
This book is so dark and intense. The suspense was well done, the story was good, the ending was like OMG what?! and makes you want to move directly to the next book. So, well done. I’m not doing any justice to this book with this review, but this book just fried my brain 😂 That’s my excuse.

Dislikes:
cliffhanger (SERIOUSLY, numbers 2 AND 3 need to be ordered now)
the use of "OK" instead of ok/okay (just a personal deal - tolerated cause if it was "O.K." hard DNF)
the fact that it's set in high school. Well, a type of high school. At least the FMC is 18 for the majority, going to assume the boys are as well? I honestly just pretended they were all ordered as it kind of seemed like that with tattoos & bikes, if I focused on the high school part it just seemed like guys pretending to be tough. However. I've never stepped foot in a real asylum, much less a fictional one so anything could go. I've read stories of unorthodox ones so.

instant love/infatuation is kind of an eyeroll with so many books using that hook, but honestly? Who cares at this point. it's so overused that it's just something I think writers don't even mean to cling to and she did a hell of a job creating some depth for their backstories, in my opinon. Color me a weirdo but I personally really dig stories that revolve around the quote unquote "unwell characters. Don't @ me for needing therapy, never going thanks to ✨trauma✨

I kept hearing buzz about this book so i decided to give it a whirl. Now i wish i hadn't. I'm in the minority here with only giving Church 2 stars. To be honest, I was bored throughout this book. The story seemed so far fetched with these kids just doing whatever whenever on a high school campus (though you'd think they were all much older with having tattoos, motorcycles, and the run of the campus itself). Though I did like the setting in the Upper Peninsula! I think I'll pass on the next installment.

Boarding school/Asylum/religious school is an intriguing setting for this kind of book.
The fact that the kids had real mental problems, as opposed to just being mean spoiled brats, was also different. Unfortunately, most of the differences to a typical bully RH stop there. The same type of characters, same insta love/obsession, same mean grownup characters…
Sirena was an interesting female mc, her trauma and the fact that she is unable to talk because of it added something else to the story. Her interaction with Seth was actually more interesting to me than her interaction with the male MCs (not to mention that for them not to realize that Seth is the reason for her trauma seemed simply stupid).
Overall, the book started off excellent, perfect setting, but somewhere along the way, it became predictable and average.

massive amounts of slut and body shaming. DNF

Truth be told, I couldn’t finish this book. I don’t normally leave reviews on books I don’t finish but since I didn’t see this mentioned in many reviews, thought it was worth it to make sure others know in case it’s not for them either.

I’m all for dark books and this definitely went dark even from the start. My main issue and why I couldn’t finish it, was the massive amount of “slut” shaming for doing the same thing they were and body type shaming from the guys (though not wowed a the FMC). I tried to continue thinking it would stop or even slow down - but nope it kept getting worse. Which is shame because it does seem like it would go as dark as I like my books.

Overall really enjoyed the read, the FMC history and mutism are what made me want to pick this up. I am all for FMCs that have a multifaceted personality, she isn't a "sassy badass" or completely weak. I think a lot of authors tend to go for one or the other, and it is hard to find a layered personality.
The MMCs were interesting, I don't think they have enough darkness or enough of a personality outside being bullies. I really wanted more raw emotions from them, more turmoil and struggles like we experience with the FMC. So I am hoping this improves in the next one in the series.
100% some cringy, eye rolling moments and I don't like the high school trope and wish this was set a little older.
Also the slut shaming, I am never a fan of this when authors add it in. Whilst bullying, bitching etc. will happen I just wish authors could come up with something better than slut shaming.
I love when authors include mental health into their characters and their stories, and so for that I can appreciate this and will be picking up the next in the series.

A twisted intense bully reverse harem book. These guys are seriously messed up.

Has an ending cliffhanger ending similar to another bully romance-where one of the Hs betrays the h as he’s never quite been on board with her and feels he’s protecting the group. This is a brutal betrayal and I’m curious as to how she’ll come back from it.

DNF DNF DNF DNF DNF. Less than 1 star.

Genuinely what the fuck?

i read about 30% of the book hoping, WISHING it would get better and then skipped to the end and it was still so fucking bad.

I’ve never read a book that had such vulgar descriptions of women and sex? Like what is the appeal of this book? Genuinely what am i missing?

I DO NOT GET IT.

i don’t even want this counted in my reading wrap up shit due to how genuinely god awful it was.

Every single character in this book was insufferable, every single character. that’s honestly impressive. Cadence and Sirena weren’t awful but they had no substance at all.

The men in this book were terrifying, now i can handle bad characters but these men weren’t even bullies they were another level; they were vile, sexist, disgusting, toxic, abusive and i just simply can’t comprehend why anyone would like this book?

There’s so much wrong with this book i cannot put it all into words.

It reads like someone took every bad idea, every bad word and every devious act/thought and jumbled it up and told AI software to produce a novel.

I don’t think it can get any lower than this.

The more i think about this book the more it angers me, i keep seeing 5 star reviews and i don’t understand them?

Holy hell did I love this. It was wauw, so freaking good.

I have been wanting to read this series for a long time but didn't because the last books aren't out yet. But then I saw a video on KG Reuss' instagram and I knew I couldn't wait.

I loved the mental health representation in this and thought the author did a really good job writing the characters. I especially loved that in the beginning Sirena didn't have that many chapters it was more the guys, but then as she started communicating more we got more from her pov. I thought that was very cleverly done by KG Reuss.

I had a hard time picking a favorite guy, I loved them so much. I really went back and forth between who I loved the most. I think maybe Stitches won by like 2 millimeters. I will say I didn't love Sin all that much, but I did see where he was coming from and his reasons for doing what he did.

Loved this so much and off to buy the second book.

This was by far the most incredible audiobook I’ve ever listened to! The narrators captured every single raw emotion and fully encompassed every single character. This was a re-read for me but when I saw the list of narrators I knew I had to listen to this!

Church is a dark academia, why choose, based in a school moonlighting as an asylum. When they try and extract demons and burn scripture into your being, all in the name of healing.

A terrible tragedy happens to Serina at the age of 10, by the person she loved the most. Serina is now mute and sent to Chapel Crest where the only thing that may bring her voice back is the 4 watchers who rule the school. The last person she expected to see was the boy who made her that way however.

This book is unhinged, and dark in the best of ways! I never re-read books but this is one I could re-read forever and never be bored!

Thank you so much to Blue Nose Audio and KG Reuss for allowing me to listen to Church pre release in exchange for my honest review

Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

The whole time I was reading this book, I had Take Me To Church by Hozier playing in my ear.

You weren’t truly broken until we broke you. Those were the rules.
Lucky Sirena Lawrence, the girl with no voice.

When Sirena was young, her best friend Seth tried to kill her. She has not spoken a word since.
Her step-father has finally had enough and decides to send her away to Chapel Crest.

Dante Church and his friends call themselves the Watchers. They run Chapel Crest.
They see the new girl at school and are immediately intrigued by her.
The Watchers make a pact that they will share her.

Sirena is immediately warned to stay away from the Watchers.
Nothing good ever happens if they direct their attention to you.
But it’s not like it stops at the Watchers.
Nothing makes your day like running into the person who tried to kill you.

A bet is made between two parties who are not friendly with each other.
The Watchers and Seth Cain.
The bet is simple.
Whomever gets Sirena to scream first wins.

She has been through hell.
She has been beaten and abused.
She has been mocked and laughed at.
Still, she has not made a sound in eight years.
Not after she screamed her lungs out inside a toolbox for almost a week.

Sirena is too beautiful for her own good.
Her muteness only makes it worse for her.
No matter what is said or done to her, she will stay quiet.
Until now, she has not even communicated to anyone.

It’s not that Sirena does not want to talk.
She is physically not able to.
No matter how hard she cries or wants to speak, no sound comes out.
Until one day, she screams like she is back in that toolbox.

Chapel Crest is full of worse monsters than her step-father.
The Watchers.
Seth Cain.
Headmaster Sully.
Who will manage to break her first? Who does she eventually scream for?

I did whatever I wanted here. I owned the place. If anyone dared say otherwise, they knew the wrath I’d bring down on them. My crew and I were the boys of Chapel Crest. The gods of its hallways. The crazy lurking in the shadows.

This book was hanging out in my TBR for close to a year. None of my GR friends had reviewed it and I just forgot about it until one day, I randomly bumped into it again. The reviews has a wide range from a disaster to a masterpiece and I decided to take a risk. Boy was the risk worth it.

This is definitely one of the most underrated books for me this year. How come not more people are raving about this?!

If there was one thing I loved, it was pretty, broken things. Things I could play with. Things I could finish off. Things I could smash to bits.

The writing is just spectacular. Some authors have a way with words and K.G. Reuss is definitely one of them!

This is a dark dark book. But, if that is your thing, get ready to be blown away.

The characters may seem pretty simple at first glance but, in reality, they are extremely multi-layered. They each have their own issues and past trauma that has made them what they are today.

The Watchers have clearly decided to use their brand of craziness to their advantage to rise to the top of the food chain. Sirena tries to be as inconspicuous as possible to avoid any negative attention. Once the Watchers set their eyes on her, she has no hope of blending in to the masses anymore.

There was more to Dante Church than the wicked bully and leader of the watchers.
He was one of the biggest, most bad ass guys on campus. He could very well be the answer to all my prayers.

Many of the reverse harems that I have read have been a bit tacky but not this. It would be too easy but no, K.G. Reuss managed to pull it off perfectly.

One mute virgin. Four men who get the p*ssy of their choice for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In any way, anywhere and however they want.

This started off quite slow and it takes a long while until we get to the good stuff (ergo all the intimacy). There is actually not that much spice in this book, only a couple of scenes. However, the ones that are included, are really really good and fit seamlessly into the story.

She was sleeping beauty, but I was no prince. I was a devil intent on claiming her soul.

Sirena had a different kind of relationship with all of the Watchers. It ranges for the obsession Church has with her to the loathing of Sin. I really love how there are many different relationships developing throughout the book, each in their own way and at their own phase.

This is a dark bully romance, which means that most of the time, not many of the characters are nice to them. The Watchers might be the worst of the bunch, even with Church’s obsession. I really like the balance of the unhinged bullying and the development of the relationships.

My monster. Dante Church was my monster.

I read the trigger warnings for the series in the author’s website and I think the worst is yet to come.

If you want on an intense, creative and unhinged ride you’re in for a treat. Just as long as you don’t mind that the FMC does not have it easy. Actually, I got some slight Hunting Adeline-vibes from this book and I would guess things are only gonna get worse from here.
