A death metal singer...
A metal feasting demon…
Insatiable hunger and thirst...
A possession of primal extremes…

Elena is a death metal demon. She spends her time in dive joints dripping in human juices hunting for her next meal. Only the aura of a savage death metal singer can satiate her, until she feasts on Sage.

Sage is the lead singer of Soiled Carcass. He is a death metal god on a booze and sex doused tour with a reputation to keep. During a performance at Bad Idol, he blacks out and hits the stage. When he comes to, he sees a raven-haired snake-tattooed woman. He suffers extreme depletion and grasps to piece together the blurry images of the evening.

Cannibalistic hunger and insatiable thirst drive Elena to devour things that are off limits. Images of a young girl with soil caked hands digging in a graveyard invade her dreams as her ghoulish past haunts her.

When a hundred-year-old face with caverns for eyes and dripping in black ichor invade Sage's mind, he suspects a connection to the rocker woman. Reliving horrifying images of a heroine infested past, he's determined to hunt the woman down despite his fear of his own insanity.

When their worlds collide, the strength of a demon is tested and a possession of primal extremes unfolds.

Her eyes scanned the crowd, perusing the plethora of potential meals. Now that she was a full demon, there were no rules. She could feed on, drink from, and fuck anyone she wanted.

Hiner Rocks!

I had a blast with this one. I loved the short chapters, and the fact that there's never a dull moment anywhere in the story at all. This is fast, vivid, and brilliantly-written fiction. Highly recommended!

I’m always on the lookout for Heavy Metal Horror so when I was offered an ARC of “Metal Demon”, I was ALL over it. I’ve previously read one other title by this author called “Devils Track”, so I knew I’d also have a good time with her latest novella.

This centers around a Demon named Elena who stalks metal bars and feeds on the aura of Death Metal frontmen. When she feeds on the lead singer of Soiled Carcass, Sage blacks out and shortly after starts to experience extreme exhaustion and strange visions. He believes it’s all linked to the Raven-haired woman he saw in the audience and he’s gonna hunt her down. Meanwhile Elena is struggling to control her insatiable hunger and feeding on auras isn’t enough, she’s craving human flesh and it’s getting harder to ignore the new craving.

This was a fun novella, I love the death metal scene and loved the names of the bands, Pestilential Flesh, Locust Lust and Rage of Fire being just a few of them. The concept of a demon who feeds on Death Metal singers is so awesome and the author did a fantastic job of creating nightmarish scenes that were cool to visualize. I enjoyed the short chapters and the jumping POVs from Sage to Elena, you get to know both characters, their backstory and the emotions they’re currently going through after Elena fed on Sage’s aura. My only gripe was that this short novella of only 147 pages had the word “metal” appearing over 150 times. It became repetitive and distracting, I get it - Elena is a Metal demon who feeds on Death Metal Gods, it didn’t need to be mentioned in almost every chapter. But overall, it was entertaining and I would recommend it to those who enjoy Demons and METAL 🤘🏼

Many thanks to the author for an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Explore this fabulous story of demonic possession from a demon's point of view.

Elena, a demon who lusts after the life essences of the lead singers of full metal bands, has a secret past even she wasn't aware of. Dressed in the skin of a female human, Elena's over-indulgent lusting sends her spiralling out of control and places her very existence in jeopardy.

This artfully written story is full of twists and turns as Elena's human prey become aware of her existence and what she is doing to lead singers. A great, page-turning read that will keep you guessing how it will end.

This is really good, right up my street. I enjoyed every word, right from beginning to end. Rock and fantasy, what’s not to like. I am assuming it’s a standalone this time. Highly recommended.

"Metal Demon" stands out from the crowd with a super unique plot and an unconventional premise. The story centers around Elena, a death metal demon with an insatiable hunger for the aura of death metal singers, and Sage, the lead singer of Soiled Carcass. This is truly a plot that defies expectations!

The novella is a visceral experience filled with gore and body horror. Hiner's writing skillfully creates a world where hunger drives the main character to extremes. The author weaves a dark and haunting atmosphere, exploring Elena's ghoulish past and Sage's determination to unravel the mystery of Elena.

Readers will be guessing until the very end! The climax is killer. Vivid and evocative descriptions bring the scenes to life, immersing the reader in a world where demonic possession and primal extremes collide.

For those who appreciate a unique and unconventional horror experience, "Metal Demon" is a must-read. Julie Hiner's storytelling captivates with its unexpected twists, visceral imagery, and suspenseful narrative.

As a member of the production team for this novella, my review may carry inherent bias. However, I believe that readers who enjoy demonic/occult or supernatural horror will find "Metal Demon" to be a captivating and thrilling read!

This is a story all about how her life got flip turned upside down……Elena the metal demon, darkening the halls of beer and sweat soaked dives in search for her next meal. The very life force of metal vocalists, ripped straight from them as they sing their hearts out to a leather clad and tattooed audience.

I do so love me some metal, and so the idea of a book that centred around both the demonic and the death metal bands of the world was right up my street. A protagonist(or antagonist I suppose) that I’d probably take home from the bar….to unfortunate ends. Oh dear.
The main body of the plot was quite straightforward and easy to follow, but there was more than enough backstory and depth to the characters to add the layers of writing that kept me engaged.

The story flowed well and the end conclusion was satisfying and unsuspected, which is always great to read.
My only gripe with the book was the overuse of certain words throughout its pages. Fireball and cherry lips being the main offenders. Constantly referring to everyone as “metal men” also felt less descriptive and more like a grandma relating info she didn’t quite understand.

A decent novella that centres you in the realms of the lesser showcased death metal scene.

"What in the metal hell is going on?"

This is my second Julie Hiner read, and, guess what... I'm a fan! There is a clear love for metal culture in her writing, with some gloriously off-the-wall metal band names (Satan's Slut takes the cake). In this quick read, we follow Elena, a centuries-old demon who feeds on the life force of metalheads. She's possessing the body of a sexy, tatted-up 30-something, which makes it easy for her to seduce the men whose lifeforce she craves. After she has a one-night stand with Sage, the young and handsome lead of a metal band, their lives become intertwined in very weird ways.

Metal and demonology go together like peanut butter and jelly, and this piece strikes a nice balance between both aspects. The demonology in particular evolves in a surprising way. The more Elena becomes unhinged, the more we learn about her past and her mission.

In my mind, Julie Hiner is two for two when it comes to endings. In this one, the climax seems both surprising and inevitable.

I didn't like this as much as Owen's Terrarium, but that novella is one of my favorite reads of the year, so Metal Demon had a tough bar to clear.

Metal Demon - Julie Hiner

Elena is a death metal demon. She prowls Heavy Metal dive joints, hunting for her next meal.
Her insatiable hunger and thirst can only be satiated by the aura of a savage death metal singer.
Enter Sage, the lead singer of the band Soiled Carcass. He’s a death metal god on a wild tour fueled by booze and sex, with a reputation to uphold.
When Sage blacks out during a performance and encounters a raven-haired, snake-tattooed woman and his life takes a dark turn.

If you love death metal and you love horror, you’ll LOVE Metal Demon.
Julie Hiner’s novella is fast paced and entertaining with short chapters and multiple povs that are easy to follow.
Considering the length of the book there are a few words that get used A LOT which gets a bit annoying but overall I had fun with the Metal Demon and her path of mayhem

I sped through this and was so sad when there was no more.
The story was a bit of an oldie but a goodie. Demons feeding off people except this time it’s specifically off of front men of metal bands.
This story was saucy, violent and featured some great band names. It’s weird to say but a very realistic portrayal of what would happen in real life.
Lots of action, lots of spicy moments and there was still time to cram in some gore.
I’ve read quite a bit from this author and I think this one now tops my favourite’s list.
Absolutely marvellous.

This book brings all the gory, sexy, metal vibes. While I was hoping for a little more depth from the main characters' back stories, I still totally fell for them both. Sage and Elena were truly metal god and demon and the dichotomy played perfectly off of each other.

Julie Hiner expertly captures the sensations of seeing a live metal show; the tingles, the screaming guitar, the throbbing bass, pounding drums, and the incindiary vocals of the metal gods. If you love rock n roll of any kind along with a twisting gory plot, I definitely recommend checking this one out.

Just finished Metal Demon by Julie Hiner, this one was pretty alright, kind of cringe at times and repetitive, like lines like "what in the demon hell" or having the people do the same thing throughout the whole story. However this one was fairly decent, it's fantastic for beginners of extreme horror, this one in my opinion was pretty alright. 3/5 stars ⭐⭐⭐ pretty alright. The main comeback for this book was there was alot of music type stuff in this one, so if your a metal/rock fan then I recommend this one.

Julie Hiner knows metal, and it shows in the depth of description and setting in Metal Demon. As for the possession part, I’m afraid to ask! I needed a quick read to get me out of a slump, and this was the cure. I appreciated the short chapters as I could pick away at it even though I might not have had much time. It also helped to keep the pace moving. Trust me, there’s not a dull moment. Now I’m even more excited to jump into the Detective Mahoney series.

Metal Demon

This was not really my cup of tea but it was a well written story of a monstrous demon who Demon got what she wanted. Thanks to Julie Hiner for an excellent story with outstanding characters.

Lots to enjoy here - the sex, the demons and, of course, the metaaaaaaal 🤘 I especially liked some of the band names featured in this one.

This one moves like a blast beat and, like all the best metal, doesn’t let up from start to finish. Nice work!

This was such an interesting concept. Death metal is definitely the main focus and the band names made me laugh. Addiction is also a big theme. Sage is forced to face his addiction in reliving his overdose and Elena is dealing with her addiction to alcohol. I liked getting both POV’s. You get them in their own separate worlds and also them as they’re brought together. Elena slowly unravels and gets more and more out of control all while Sage is trying to solve the mystery. I especially enjoyed getting Elena’s back story and how she got where she is.

This was a quick read and I thought the pacing was perfect. It’s not really scary but there are some parts that are kinda gory and gross. Death metal and horror was a fun combination.
