Beautiful Shattering

Rate this book
What if you meet the love of your life, but he's already lost the love of his?

Raven is pure sunshine. Really. She even wakes up early enough to greet it. As a triathlon coach and kindergarten teacher, her life looks perfect. She’s thriving, except for her daddy issues and a string of commitment-phobic ex-boyfriends, of course.

Briggs is a sexy CEO. He’s also grieving the loss of his late wife with zero intentions of ever moving on, despite his work suffering. So when Briggs is threatened with a leave of absence, he hires Raven to prove that he’s working on himself.

But training for a triathlon is no small feat, and neither is denying his attraction to his peppy coach. They’re opposites in every way, and she deserves more than a grumpy widower, but damn it if he can’t stay away from her sunshine—and she can’t stop her racing heart.

Blending the genres of contemporary sports romance, women’s literary fiction, and romantic comedy, Beautiful Shattering is a swoon-worthy read about second chances, forgiveness, and inner-strength.

Finally getting around to reviewing!

Beautiful Shattering by Grace Costello took me on an unexpected journey that, turned out to be a delightful surprise. I snagged this gem as an ARC, and I must admit, it sadly gathered some dust on my shelf before I finally gave it the attention it deserved. And I went into it completely blind!

As someone who wouldn't even dream of doing a triathlon, I was pleasantly surprised at how the author pulled me into the world of sports. Living vicariously through the protagonist, Briggs, was easily enabled through the writing. Got to experience the lows and the highs.

For a book that's probably shorter than other books of a similar depth I was pleasantly surprised. The emotional rollercoaster caught me off guard—I didn't expect it to tug at my heartstrings as much as it did.

Now, here's where my inner cynic emerges. Briggs seemed to leave his trauma and baggage in the dust a bit too quickly for my liking. Call me a skeptic, but I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at the seemingly rapid resolution. Although it did come in the finally 20% all the worry and trauma seemed to vanish.

I thoroughly enjoyed Beautiful Shattering. Grateful for the ARC that landed in my lap, I'm eagerly awaiting what Grace Costello has up her sleeve next. If this book is any indication, I'm definitely going to give it a read.

I picked up this book, on a whim, during Stuff Your Kindle Day and I was blown away by this emotional, heartfelt, beautiful romance. It was my first book by the author(s) and I love when you take a chance on a new experience, and the risk pays off with the literary shoe being a great fit. There is no insta-love or insta-lust here; this is a enemies to lovers, (very) slow burn love story that takes its time to weave its magic.

Raven and Briggs. He is a widower with severe trauma and self flagellation with guilt, as he was the driver in the accident that took his wife's life. He mercilessly throws himself into work, as the CEO of his family business, and to appease his concerned family and the board that he does have external interests, he agrees to participate in his first-ever triathlon. Raven - who, in addition to being Briggs' nephew's kindergarten teacher, also is a professional triathlete with her own club and team. She takes on Briggs as a client and there begins the emotional slow burn, as they both repeatedly clash in their attempts to break through each other's past and emotional baggage. But there is a burgeoning attraction that keeps them circling each other, first tentative steps to friendship and then a full blown run to something deeper and more passionate....

My favorite parts:
1) I just loved how this book, very skilfully, takes you from a place of so much despair and despondency to hope and love. When you first meet Briggs, there is so much pain and suffering and just when you think it can't get worse, you relive it through Raven's eyes when her attempts to connect with him are constantly rebuffed and rejected. But as he strengthens physically and with her persistent support, he's forced to face his demons and you see something else really beautiful emerging from the ashes of his past.

2) I loved Raven. I have a bone to pick with flimsy FMCs; I come down way harder on them (I'm probably being sexist) but Raven is sheer strength and courage. She's so physically and mentally strong; even during her hardest battles with Briggs - she knows to step back and give him space so he braves his own journey and owns his decisions.

3) The triathlon background was just really unique, interesting and fun; it was a great platform for the characters to push themselves, mentally and physically.

I'm so glad I chanced upon this book - highly recommend.

Raven and Briggs are a real and relatable pairing, fufilling the grumpy sunshine trope, but still being fun and human! Neither of them have an easy life, while Briggs struggles with his own demons of the past, Raven struggles wondering what her future holds and struggling to find happiness in the normalcy of life. I loved all the sass and relatability of their slow burn love story!

Summary:

Briggs is self described as the hit first and ask questions later. He spends his days working nonstop to avoid thinking about how much has changed in 3yrs. When he runs into his nephew's kindergarten teacher he is not really sure what to make of her and the fact she is accidentally flashing an entire coffee house while cornering his bother about his nephew's behavior in class. Due to the downward spiral of the last 3yrs, his company is not willing to put up with his behavior and threatens to place him on a leave of absence of he can't prove he has a life outside of work.

Raven is sunshine to the extreme, and considering she works as a kindergarten teacher, she also has patience for a lot in life. But one thing she is not willing to put up with, is someone who doesn't take her, and her successful triathlon training business seriously. She dreams of having it all one day, being a happy amateur athlete and having a family of her own. If only she could find someone who can understand her passion for both those things.

When Briggs signs up to train with Raven for a triathlon, neither one is prepared for how much stress and joy they are capable of bringing one another if they both let their guards down a bit.

What if you meet the love of your life, but he's already lost the love of his?

Say no more. I was hooked.

Raven and Briggs couldn't be more different from each other if they tried. Raven is a ball of sunshine, kindergartener teacher and triathlon coach, who finds the positive in anything, and Briggs is a workaholic, CEO of his family's business, who is struggling to come to terms with the death of his wife and first love. To prove to his family that he's coping with the loss, he tells them he going to compete in a triathlon. Little did he know how much work was require to even be remotely prepared to compete in one. When his brother hires Raven as his coach, he had no idea what he was getting himself into - physically and emotionally.

This was a rollercoaster of emotions. There was such a depth to Briggs' character. He was such a broken person, and he wasn't willing to allow himself an ounce of happiness. He wasn't magically changed because Raven paid him attention. The struggle and emotions he went through to heal and be open to even the remote possibility of love or affection was heartbreaking. I really felt for him. His side of the story captured me in a way Raven's side wasn't able to - although I did love her still.

This fills the Grumpy x Sunshine quota. The slow burn was the slowest, most agonising burn that was so worth it in the end. The character development was to die for, there was such a growth in these characters, it felt like you were right there next to them.

I received a copy of this book from the authors as an ARC. This is my honest review.

This wasn’t a bad book let me start with that. It’s a very inspiring book, a grief filled journey that ultimately ends with a HEA. The main characters are developed amazingly, by the end of it you feel like you know these characters personally. What drives them. What makes them tick. The author does a wonderful job in character development that’s for sure. In terms of storyline and plot, it’s there, it’s centred very much around triathlons and the different training they do. How this training can heal and make you feel accomplished. In terms of the romance aspect, it’s an incredibly incredibly slow burn with no real pay off. It’s not until about 70% through that it even becomes evident that romance is going to part of the book. In my opinion I think the relationship building could’ve been focused on and built up more than it was to get the ending at we did. There is no spice whatsoever which is fine, not all books require it and this book might have benefitted from the addition of it but ultimately it wasn’t about sex. It was about healing. So if spice is what you’re after this book isn’t for you but if you’re happy with a book focused on grief and healing and triathlons then this is it. Overall I’m going to rate it a 3/5. I just personally had a hard time engaging with it but I can see it being enjoyable and even educational for people who have experienced this type of trauma. I commend Grace for her work on this piece.

I was lucky to get this book as an ARC for an honest review 🙂

⭐⭐⭐⭐
Duel POV ✅
Spice🌶

Honestly this book was beautifully written, my heart just broke for Brigg's, troubled by his past and grieving the lost of his wife , his story really grabs you. He feels like he cant be loved and shouldn't be loved and he has this whole fight through out the book. Coming to term he's allowed to love again but he has to get passed these feelings.

Raven is a beautiful soul and I loved her, she is perfect for Briggs , she gives him hope that he thinks he cant have. She his sunshine on this rainy day that hasnt gone since the passing off his wife.
She understanding, supportive and tells him straight when he needs it and this really helped Briggs and Raven relationship.

You could feel the sexual tension between these two and it really pulls you in. It's really nice reading the little looks, or touches through the book. Them both coming to terms for their feelings for each other.

I loved the ending of this book it was 100% closure for Briggs and he needed to do this on his own time and it couldnt off happened at the right time because he could say what was needed to Raven , just a perfect ending and I loved it !!

I would 1000% recommend this book its beautiful and I loved every mintue reading it 🙂

Beautiful Shattering - Grace Costello

🌿 Briggs is a widower, who's wife died tragically. Raven unknowingly bumps into Briggs at a coffee shop, when she spots a parent of a child in her kindergarten class, that parent happens to be Briggs' brother. Their chance encounter turns into a regular occurrence when Briggs' brother signs him up for tri-club that Raven runs!

🌿 Raven is pure sunshine to Briggs' grumpiness. They complement each other so well! Raven is quick witted and funny, and Briggs has taken to pushing her buttons to get a reaction.

🌿 Raven and Briggs' story is a beautiful one of love and forgiveness. I really enjoyed this story, it was a real page turner making you feel every emotion for both Raven and Briggs. Briggs' family is such an amazing support network, I love their dynamic. This book is so well written and sensitive topics handled in a beautiful way!

🌿 This book is a standalone, written in a dual POV style which I absolutely love! I love hearing each characters side to their story. The chapters are a good length and Grace's writing flows beautifully.

🌿 What to expect: Dual POV, Grumpy/Sunshine, Sports Romance, Slow Burn, HEA, Tragic Loss.

This book was beautifully written. I just wanted to say a big thank you to Grace Costello for this opportunity to be apart of there arc team to read this heartwarming book ‘beautiful shattering’ I’ve loved reading it and reading about Raven and Briggs.

This book is a dual POV which I love seeing from both perspectives as I feel I get a deeper connection to both the characters seeing what they are thinking and feeling. I personally have never read a book that has had such an emotional impact to me to the point I started to tear up. Honestly the characters were perfect and the character development was so amazing to read. I personally loved Raven she was so bubbly and sweet and though Briggs was a grump you fully understand where he’s coming from the more you read and I just fell in love with the both of them. I loved reading about the sports especially the way that it was wrote so accurately about the way you feel as you’re doing it. I personally gave this book a 5/5 star read it’s become one of my favourites to read and I can’t wait to reread it again 😂😊. The spice level for me was a 1.5/5 it was a really great spicy scene but not a lot of spicy scenes more of a plot and romance for me which was a perfect balance for this book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5.

Wow, this was an emotional ride. We have Raven and Briggs as our MC's. Raven is a teacher, who also coaches people running races, triathlons, marathons, etc. I love that for her! She motivates so many people and has a great group of friends from her training. Briggs, is a grumpy CEO who lost his wife tragically and is feeling pressured to move on in a new relationship. Rather than take a leave of absence at work because of stress, his brother signs him up with Raven to train for a triathlon. He is reluctant to work with the bubbly teacher, but finds himself enjoying the physical toll of the training.
This was a great story of grief, determination, and finding your passion. My only cons with the book; there would be weeks happening off page, where the MC's would maybe train together, but not really interact. For romance-type book, that bugged me because I wanted him to move forward quicker! But I understand the process and how hard it was for him. Also, the ending, when everything wrapped up, an epilogue would be nice to see how they are doing!
Overall a great read, and thankful for the ARC copy!

💜 Review: Beautiful Shattering 💜

‘What if you meet the love of your life, but he’s already lost his?’ - this opening line on the front cover hooked me straight away, I mean how could it not?

Meet Briggs, the MMC in the story, devastated by the loss of his wife and barely surviving day to day. He’s in a constant state of self loathing, feeling unworthy of any kind of joy in his life and lives in his own purgatory. The authors really allow you to experience his thought process clearly, his constant battle and inner monologue will make it seem like you’re right there with him.
Then we meet Raven, the sunshine to his grumpy. A highly driven woman who wants love and happiness without having to settle.
The two are complete opposites and it’s heart warming to see the way in which Raven gets through Briggs’ tough outer shell without him realising.
A moving story that could touch even the most broken of hearts, definitely worth a read!

3.5!

What a beautiful, heart wrenching, and hopeful portrayal of grief. The dual POV in this book really lends itself to the depth of each character. I appreciated just how developed and detailed they were - as it made the journey that much more captivating. With that being said, this book is a sloooow burn. At about the half way mark I was hungry for some passion. I'm not privy to reading super slow burn romances, however, I do think the pacing was justified within the context of the story. Specifically, Briggs past and his experience with loss are a reasonable excuse to not jump feet first into a new relationship (lol).

Note: there is a strong sporty sub plot. As someone who is the complete opposite of athletic, I worried going into this that I might find aspects of it un-relatable. I was proven very wrong. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone seeking a down-to-earth and optimistic read!

I was lucky enough to read an ARC copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Let me start with saying this book has done something that doesn’t often happen, it got ALL UP in my emotions and almost made me cry. We go on a bit of an emotional roller coaster but we do get that HEA.

Briggs Lawson, shew about had me hating him for at one point, but he finally saw the light. He’s just trying to prove to his family he’s “fine enough” to keep running the family business. Meddling little brother Turner just happens to know the how to help Briggs with his triathlon training, the bright kindergarten teacher of his son-
Miss Raven Oliver.

Raven is a kindergarten teacher who hopes to leave a bright spot not only in her 5 year old students lives, but the triathlon athletes she trains too. Raven is just hoping to find that bright spot in her life where she finds the love of her life and to have a family of her own. She’s an only child but knows she wants a houseful of kids, unfortunately it’s been one commitmentphobe guy after the other. Cue the Lawson family.

I loved this book from start to finish! It's such a fast, good read. I was done in 2 days and didn't want to put it down at all. This love story was so cute and so well played that it had me wanting more. The character development in this story is amazing, and watching them grow and tackle life together is something that is very realateable to almost anyone. It was such a joy to read this book, and I can't wait to purchase a physical copy of it!

Briggs, the main male character, is widowed and blames himself for her death. He is very scared to move on until he meets Raven. Raven is a Kindergarten teacher and the coach of a local triathlon club. Briggs signs up for classes, and the rest is history! You'll have to read it to find out what happens!

If you like romance, sports, and a little spice, then this book is for you! I promise you will enjoy it! Prepare to cry and laugh all while reading it!

i thoroughly enjoyed getting to know raven and briggs. they really put the “slow” in slow burn, but the wait was worth it.

raven, being the wonderful and kind fmc that she is, had the patience of a saint. it was very much needed for a kindergarten teacher, but also for briggs. she gave him all the grace he needed on his long and difficult journey to healing and growth. she’s also fun and so deserving of her found family and the respect of those around her.

briggs may have been rough around the edges at first but for good reason. anyone who’s been through what he has is bound to experience immense grief and guilt. joining on his journey as he found himself and gave himself the chance to truly live again was beautiful.

i’m hoping for a next book or bonus content giving us a glimpse into the future to see what it holds for raven and briggs. i just know they’re gonna create the most beautiful family.

This book was recommended to me (and others on a broad scale as I am not that special xD) by the lovely Sara Cate. And if you know anything about Sara's books, you know they be SPICY. And it's one of the things I love about her books. So as a recommendation coming from her, I was expecting a spicy book. This slowest of burns just about killed me. Torture in the sweetest way. This slow burn romance takes.. just about the whole book to get you to that place. But there's more to it than that for Briggs and his growth as a person and his journey through healing his trauma. And Raven discovering her worth through her trials. It's a lovely book. I definitely didn't want to put it down. If you're looking for spice, this is not the book for you. But if you enjoy a book filled with characters working on their healing journey and the very slow burn of learning how to fall in love again, this is your book.

✨ARC REVIEW✨
Beautiful Shattering by Grace Costello ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Whenever there is a loss of a loved one in a story I talk myself out of reading the book, but this book made me believe in second chances which is also one of my least favorite tropes, but I decided to give this story and Grace a chance.

He slapped me with a white glove. As I progressed in reading, the way in which the author detailed and defined the feelings of each character made me delve deeper into the story each time without the option of abandoning the reading.

And both characters Briggs and Raven are so opposite that I was infinitely grateful for that slow burn and that evolution of their relationship in the story was fantastic.

This book is one of the few that I have truly enjoyed and now Grace has made me her fan and I hope to have the opportunity to continue reading her books, many thanks to her @grace.costello.author for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC.

Loved reading Beautiful Shattering. Briggs is a widow, but he's likeable grump. Raven is a kindergarten teacher who also runs a group who train for triathlons. With the help from Briggs's brother, Briggs joins Ravens group. Feelings start to grow between the two. Briggs fights them as he feels he can't love again after losing the love of his life Jaci.
My heart broke for Briggs, you could feel his pain and his worry about falling for Raven. Briggs made me angry at times and does an extremely cute thing for Raven's kindergarten class at Christmas.
Briggs's has a supportive family, but sadly Raven's not so much. Raven is an only child with parents who don't show any support or concern for her. Raven is lonely and looking for a relationship that lasts longer than a few weeks.
It's a bumpy road for these two but they do get their HEA.

This story by Grace Costello really pokes at your heart the whole time. From the female lead’s forever optimistic attitude and zeal for life despite her relationship with her parents to the male lead’s constant battle with survivors guilt. Costello does a great job helping the reader gain an understanding about where each character is coming from in terms of their emotions and decisions. Thankfully, despite the tragedy that this book centers around it doesn’t keep the characters stuck. There is growth, self awareness and acceptance, love. Can’t get much better than that. Plus, as a fun addition you get to learn a lot about what goes into running a triathlon. Mad respect for those athletes. I’ll never do that in a million years but good for them lol. Anyway, wonderful book that will take you on an emotional roller coaster of a journey from start to finish.

5/5 stars!
The main characters, embodying the grumpy sunshine trope, are beautifully crafted. Brigg’s brooding exterior hides a tender core, while Raven’s warmth and optimism become a beacon of hope for him. The chemistry between them is palpable, keeping you invested in their journey and rooting for their love.

Central to their journey is Brigg’s grief. We get to empathize with his struggles and celebrate his victories as he begins to envision and want more for himself, and yet doesn’t feel he deserves it. Through his triathlon training, he begins to not only find a partner in Raven but also a family in the other trainees.

Beautiful Shattering not only delivers a heartwarming love story but also explores the transformative power of love in the face of grief.

I am looking forward to see what Grace Costello comes out with next!

Great slow burn, grumpy/sunshine romance.

Briggs lost the love of his life 3 years ago in a terrible accident. He is withdrawn and riddled with guilt, solely focusing on the family business. In an effort to help him continue living, his family forces him to get a hobby. Briggs will be participating in a triathlon.

Raven is an enthusiastic kindergarten teacher of Briggs’ nephew, and also a triathlon coach. Her positive attitude and cheerful optimism is so refreshing.

While being coached and preparing for the upcoming triathlon, Briggs goes through a much needed self discovery and acceptance journey.

HEA sliding in right at the finish line. Would have loved to see more of their life together after the race.

This book had all the feels! I haven’t read something so heart gripping in a long time. The way the writers described the pain and struggle for the MCs was top notch. This was a slow burn but oh so worth it. I read this in less than 2 days and honestly it’s one of those books that will stay with me for some time, I just know it.

Briggs is a heartbroken self depreciating man, that doesn’t feel he deserves anything good in life, even when Raven comes popping In, With her vibrant wardrobe and fun energetic self. But things change, life changes, and no one can stop it not even Briggs.

-Thank you Grace Castello for a beautiful shattering story! ❤️

ARC Review

This book was so beautiful and heart-wrenching, definitely a top read for those, like me, who like to feel their heart squeeze and tears pool in their eyes.

Let's talk about Briggs and Raven (love this name by the way), he's a brokenhearted man that lost his family and the love of his life in a car accident. Raven is a bubbly kindergarten teacher the loves life.
Life brings them together, and trough tall the book you feel his struggle to accept that he deserves to be happy and love again. And all throughout this journey you feel the support that Raven gives him, and most importantly the space and understanding, to heal.

It's a very relatable story, you can feel the characters emotions and doubts as your own.

Thank you for this book and this heart shattering story!

Beautiful Shattering
By Grace Costello

Get lost in this emotionally-raw story full of big feelings and romance.

The words to describe this pale in comparison to how beautifully this is written.
Briggs is a widower is roped into trying for a triathlon. Raven is kindergarten teacher/triathlon coach.
The 2? Polar opposites. He’s grumpy, she is sunshine. He comes from a large, tight-knit family, she is a lonely, only child.

This is a fun, slow-burn but quick read. This book made me feel all of the feelings. Add to your TBR ASAP!

The author did a really good job of describing the emotions and challenges faced by the characters. It is a wonderful tale of processing grief, learning to rebuild a life, finding love when it seems impossible, and choosing to overcome difficulty. There was a great parallel between Briggs training for a triathlon and learning to not give up in pursuit of his goals as well as finding out how to not give up on life. This book was also motivating and inspiring. Great choice for a nice day and a cozy chair!

I can't begin to tell you how much I loved Briggs & Raven. Such a beautiful story about grief and love.

It follows Briggs who has lost his wife and Raven comes into the picture. Raven becomes Briggs triathlon coach, after he tells his family that he's competing in a triathlon (I personally could never haha). From there, we go through Briggs journey of training and healing to be the person he needs to be.

- Grumpy x sunshine
- HEA
- Deals with grief and moving on with life
- Slow burn (a real solid slow burn)

Emotionally Shattered is a descriptively well written, story that had my emotions all over the place. Raven and Briggs meet when he hires her to show that he is improving by training for a triathlon. Her sunny disposition is beginning to rub off on him, but he can't get over the death of his wife. Raven is drawn to Riggs and just being around him revs up her heart. Can a triathlon trainer and a grieving widower have more in common than they think and will it lead them along a path to happiness.
I am volunteering to leave a review for an ARC of this book.

Talk about a slow burn…but honestly that ending had me SOBBING. When it comes to contemporary romance, I do think if you’ve read one, you’ve kind of read them all, but this was different. A widower doing his best to survive after losing his wife, and then finding his way in love again. I think it gave me perspective, and helped me possibility cultivate some compassion for my own dad in his journey. Briggs you beautiful man & Raven, what a sweet, patient gorgeous FMC. The ending had tears rolling down my face. I loved this.

Quick read, dual POV, mild spice with good build up and banter. I like that both MC’s were more dimensional than just “grump” or “sunshine”. I feel like some authors think that if someone is Grumpy™️ then we can never see them experiencing joy, or a Sunshiney Girl can’t experience moments of loneliness, anxiety and regret, but Briggs and Raven were both very human.

Lost half a star for a couple of grammar issues and minor inconsistencies but it didn’t ruin the story for me.

Beautitul Shattering by Grace Costello was an interesting read and different from what I have read by Grace Costello, but it was still a good read.

Briggs was an interesting character and was easy to follow along in the book. Also this book was entertaining and hard to put down especially all the roller coasters of how the story progressed!

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes stories that keeps you on your toes and likes sporty fiction.

I have to begin with saying how much I love the slow burn/grumpy sunshine vibe of the book. The characters journey through struggles was amazing to watch unfold. And the whole forgiveness aspect was the highlight of the book. I love how amazing the female lead is in this book. Im just in awe. Grace did an amazing job depicting the characters and creating an amazing journey for them. I would definitely recommend this book.
