Tristan Gilbert, the autocratic Duke of Kendall, has a clear plan for his future—destroy his father’s memory, obliterate his enemies, and become Prime Minister. Fortunately, he can accomplish all three goals by convincing Parliament to prosecute the Scottish Earl of Hadley. Once Hadley is vanquished, surely the Queen will recognize Kendall’s readiness for the role of Prime Minister. But in order to succeed, Kendall must first conquer his own unnerving attraction to Hadley’s hoyden of a daughter—Lady Isolde Langston. No matter his efforts, Lady Isolde lingers in his blood, a sort of love-potion madness Kendall struggles to suppress. Lady Isolde Langston knows impulsivity will be her downfall. Case in point, her heedless actions triggered the Duke of Kendall’s current vendetta against her father. Isolde needs to right the wrongs she caused and force the duke to surrender before Hadley ends up jailed. To do this, she decides to torment Kendall at every turn—at balls and musicales and even in his own library. The arrogant Sassenach will rue the day he crossed her. But when an unfortunate accident fractures both their lives, Kendall and Isolde unexpectedly face a future neither of them wished. Adrift, they are forced to call a truce. As their romance deepens, can Kendall change his heart sufficiently and Isolde forgive past hurts in order to form a love all their own?
How do you feel about reviewers reviewing on their last emotional tether? Like, at the brink of succumbing to a tidal wave of romance reader elation. If you’re not into the overenthusiastically hyperbolic, and so, looking for measured objectivity and tempered thoughts, I don’t hate to disappoint. Actually, “over” and “hype” might make it sound like such visceral reactions or joyful devastation are somehow disproportionate and unmerited. This is far from the case.
Ms. Van wrote a redemption magnus opus of a romance series finale. And she knows it. You can almost sense a tiny bit of sadistic glee at her knowingly slackening our jaws and making our ears ring as she’s simultaneously dismantling/flaying up/ healing the series villain and swooning our faces off. Ok, you might not actually hear fiendish-author distant cackling, but this level of soul-cleansing character arc, epic enemies progression and heart-affirming themes of forgiveness and family-as-the-be-all, not to mention scorching scenes of yearning, cannot have been done in any unintentional way. So, yeah, I affirm romance reader total annihilation was her achievable goal, and hence, we can only rave and offer futile-words praise with whatever’s left of our swoon-decimated psyches.
Far be it from me to reduce this perfection of a story, the synapse-backfiring, dazzling writing and depth as deep as the Rockall Trough to a mere trope manifestations list. But, I am a shameless trope-expectation chaser to my core, so this is actually high praise: Imagine your Favorite Trope wishlist (including favorite hero archetype, no less) was somehow spirited and whispered to one of your most trusted, rabid-fan-devotion-inspiring authors, and you were granted your every bookish heart’s desire in one transportive tale. I’m not kidding, Hate to Love, Forced Marriage, Lonely-Little-Boy Icy Duke, Redemption Arc, stoic/sunshine, written communication, delicious, scrumptious pining/grovel, all my must-read-and-giddy-swoon-all-the-way-home-s. I won’t go into the micro-tropes because catching them is half the fun, but let’s just say, I must’ve done something good. Ok, fine, definitely unworthily bestowed, but every romance reader should have this happen to them at least once in their reading journey. Now mine is calendarized by B.V. (Before Van? You get it).
If you’re reading this raving melt-down without having read this series (and have made it this far, kudos, may you always find the other sock), this is when I tell you A HEART SUFFICIENT is very capably written as a could-stand-alone, but why deny yourself? Why not have the full series scope of this duke’s relentlessly vicious ambition or, while you’re at it, the root of his family’s downfall that fuels it? Why not fully grasp the underlying aching yearning of his latent wounded heart from his sister’s story and his journey back to her? I’ll include the reading order at the end; make the self-care choice. If you’ve already read up to this one, tell me I’m right. Last time we saw these galaxy-crossed lovers they were melting the sitting room wallpaper with the barely-leashed animosity tension and seeing the promise of them fulfilled in a conflagration that would fog up the whole of Kew Gardens’ Temperate House, is everything and more, plus a Penn-Leith reunion for the ages.
Already this was a favorite series by light years above, now it’s triumphantly entered its own pantheon of romance reading glory.
I received and ARC of this ravenously anticipated release from the author, mostly out of condescension for my misery-frayed impatience. Grateful is an understatement.
Releases February 7 and available on KU!
Content Notes: Kissing Only with married intimacy implied. Preoccupation with consummation and open conversation about it, brief discussion of mistresses. Plenty mentions of desire and attraction pre-deepened connection. If Mimi Matthew’s Belles of London series is at your content, heat-or-lack-there-of comfort level, you should be fine. Some biblical cursing language. Mention of and on page toxic parent. Mention and flashback to childhood verbal and physical abuse. **might be considered reveal spoiler** Vague mention of prostitution and minor forced into acts (some related trauma comes up).
Suggested reading order: Suffering the Scot (Brotherhood of the Black Tartan 1- couple is A Heart Sufficient’s heroine’s parents-Scottish Earl, English Lady E2L)
Romancing the Rake (Brotherhood of the Black Tartan 2- hero is very prominent character in A Heart Suficient- story reveals downfall of the Duke of Kendall (why Tristan wants vengeful glory)- rake and bluestocking second chance road trip
Love Practically (The Penn-Leiths of Thistle Muir 1) Marriage of convenience, emotionally constipated hero, angst.
Adjacent But Only Just (The Penn-Leiths of Thistle Muir 2) first meet A Heart Sufficient’s Tristan and his conniving maneuvers. Class difference, widower hero, chemistry like no other.
One Kiss Alone (The Penn-Leiths of Thistle Muir 3) The heroine is Tristan’s sister. Lots of more conniving maneuvering from Tristan. Class difference, opposites attract, poet golden retriever hero.
A Heart Sufficient- (The Penn-Leiths of Thistle Muir 4) Tristan finds his heart and steals your own. The end.
I don’t often do full rereads, so it should tell you something about the level of perfection of this book. All the feels, all the stars, everything 😌
first read
All the feels! All of them!
This is not only the last book of the Penn-Leith series but also a spinoff of The Brotherhood. I highly recommend reading all these books in order, especially since most of them are amazing. You can thank me later.
Tristan is the villain from the previous books, the powerful, manipulative and arrogant duke. He is still all that when this story begins but I may have fallen a little in love with him when he first called his sister Allie in the previous book .
Isolde is scandalously educated and too old to be considered marriageable (29😱). She detests the insufferable duke like everyone else but she also knows that there’s an air of attraction between them…
I adored this book so much I had to take breaks to process what I was reading. The redemption arc was beautifully done. Tristan was not likable but I loved how he gradually opened up to Isolde and became a caring, loving man. His vulnerability and his struggles made a lot of sense and it was a delight to read.
This is a closed door romance so no spicy scenes. Instead there are real emotions and amazing chemistry, so it’s perfect 😌
6 stars My favorite in the series! the YEARNING and TENSION in this one is top tier! Enemies to lovers. spow burn, he falls first, shipwrecked on a desert island?! And all of it done with perect nuance and a great build up.
This is without a doubt, one of the best books I have read and will ever read. It was one of those soul altering books for me y’all. This redemption arc for Tristan is everything I was hoping to see and then blew all of those expectations out of the water.
I will say, I think this book is best read blind and after reading the previous books in the series. The way things came together to provide this beautiful and engaging story of hope, grief at a loss of childhood, and the acknowledgement that you are worthy of love.
When I read, I’m not really a highlighter and I marked 10x more passages than I have with a book in a long time. The amount of moments that made me swoon, want to cry, and made me kick my feet giddy all deserved to be tabbed so I can return to this story again and again and again. This is a reread book.
I love these characters eternally, I love this story with my whole heart and will be begging everyone that I can to read A Heart Sufficient. My review will never do it justice. READ IT.
Overall audience notes: - Historical Romance - Language: very low - Romance: closed door - Violence: low - Trigger/Content Warnings: child abuse (recounted), near death experience

-----reread 1.28.25 will i ever be over this book? (no)
-----reread 11.25 will i ever be over this book pt. 2 (no)
A Heart Sufficient is the pinnacle of the Penn Leith series. It is everything readers and fans could hope for. This is a story full of endless hope, heartache and scorn...but yet, it is forged in a love that is timeless, gentle and enduring.
This is one of the most beautiful redemption stories that i've ever read. Nichole has dug into the history and dynamics between multiple characters...across several books...and totally has outdone herself. Like the complexity of a tartan, this story is filled with threads of hurt, and wrong doing but is mixed with threads of acceptance, healing and ultimately belonging. The journey is in the history and so reading the books in order was very beneficial to my overall experience.
Tristan and Isolde have such a wonderful love story... somewhat mirroring their mythological namesakes. I adored the authentic build. Nothing seems rushed and new feelings come to light in very organic ways. This is a quiet deep love that will make you feel that burning in your chest...every scene is to be savored and even more so in tandem with these characters strengths and flaws. I don't recommend reading this on an airplane because you will cry and people will look at you like you're a crazy person...which to be fair #true
This family will become your family. As a reviewer...sometimes you want to say the right thing to get a book into as many hands as possible...and I think in this instance the book just speaks for itself.
Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh!!!!! That was so amazing! I loved it so Much! Dang forget Darcy, you want a bad boy turned good, this is your book and Tristin is your guy! I really worried there for a min. I actually thought that a Van book would let me down. I did not know how she could turn this cold unfeeling man around! She did it and she did awesome! Oh this book had some serious swoon in it! If you like your book squeaky clean with one kiss at the end this is not for you. This is a clean romance with heated kisses, attraction, real life stuff that makes me happy! This is what a enemies' to lovers romance should look like. Loved it.
Reasons to read: - Brilliant character growth and Arc - A True Enemies to Lovers - Battle of the wits - Forced proximity - Victorian Era, Scottish Setting - Romance with perfect chemistry and depth - Balanced storytelling with angst, humor, love, and healing moments - Satisfying Series conclusion
𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 : Romance: fade to black (vague) Trigger warning: Childhood Abuse
My Short Review: This is my favorite book. I am relieved I finally have an answer to the aged old question. The difficulty lies in trying to express the love I have for this book in the words of this review. Where do I begin? How can I describe the feelings I experienced while reading and how might my experience help you decide to take a chance on this story, reader? Though my words may fall short, and you might think, “It’s not that deep.” I have to say: this book was everything I wanted. Delivered with a surprisingly quiet beauty, it moved me to tears and earned the place of my favorite book without much effort at all.
Emotional, romantic, and incredibly written, A Heart Sufficient follows the redeeming tale of Tristan Gilbert, Duke of Kendall, and the fiery Isolde Langston. A story that shows the strength found in the vulnerability and healing of love, the journey of Tristan and Isolde from well-matched enemies to a love that was capable of understanding without the need for words was entertaining and heartfelt in turns. The plot flowed with the growth of the characters, leading to an addicting reading experience. I loved the added complexity that the secondary characters brought to the story and how they highlighted the stark difference in the upbringing and mindset of Tristan and Isolde. Tristan and Isolde had a true connection, though they appeared opposites. The moments they shared were sometimes quiet and meaningful, and other times, explosive with the sparks ignited between them. Truly, one of the best romances I have read. Not one line in this story was taken for granted, effortlessly weaving together for a stirring and memorable conclusion.
Nichole Van gave everything she had in this book, and it showed. I didn’t want to move on from it once finished. In short, if you love a historical romance with chemistry, lyrical writing, and brilliant character arcs, read this story, it's a time well spent.
***suggested reading order : To best enjoy A Heart Sufficient, I recommend beginning with Suffering the Scot and Romancing the Rake to add context and insight into the entire backstory and cast of characters. This series includes the stories of the hero and and heroines parents and story. Then reading the series in order, beginning with Love Practically. .***
My (significantly) Longer review -> All the above, plus more details.
To say Nichole Van is skilled in writing character-driven stories is a sad understatement. She crafts her stories around the characters, making each book unique. The same holds for A Heart Sufficient. Tristan and Isolde have quickly become my favorite characters written by Nichole Van. They were perfectly matched in a way that was not glaring at first, but once found, I could not see them with anyone else.
Let it be known that I was rooting for Tristan from his very first appearance as the formidable and arrogant Duke of Kendall, and can write an entire research paper dedicated to his character. I saw the potential in his character and knew Van would deliver an amazing redemption arc. I was amazed at how Van was able to take one person, and especially break him into two halves, Kendall and Tristan, only to find the harmony between the two. Kendall was an enjoyable antihero, yet, felt my heart go out to him as the story progressed and the “Why” of the matter was made painfully clear. Yet as Tristan began to make himself known, I was awestruck at the change. Never have I read a character so vulnerable and emotionally intense as Tristan. He was quiet, and bookish, yet remaining formidable and with the true state of his pain being revealed. There were many complex layers to him, and it was beautiful to see him accept this fact. The love shown to him by Isolde was truly a healing experience for him, and it was so wonderfully expressed.
Isolde on the hand was his perfect match in every way. I loved her fiery and often impulsive nature. She did not take things lying down, and would meet Kendall at every turn (to his endless torment). Intelligent, with a heart of gold that was clearly nurtured by her loving upbringing, it was easy to see why Tristan would fall so in love with her. I enjoyed watching her interactions with her family, and the strong connection she had with her father, Andrew Langston, or Hadley. This relationship added a realistic complexity to the story and budding relationship between Tristan and Isolde.
There were so many contrasting factors to Tristan and Isolde that on the surface, made them seem opposites - yet I’ve never believed in soulmates as much as with these two. Their romance was incribiity balanced, both with substance and chemistry. She was the spark, and he the fuse. They shared the best tension, and there kiss scenes were unmatched. A heartwarming, and sometimes heartbreaking love story, it moved me to tears.
I also loved the lush style of Van’s writing, you could clearly picture the scenes described of locations like the Scottish Isles, the ballrooms of England, and the impressive estates. The attention to historical detail was great but did not overtake the plot or dialogue. The plot itself was entertaining and moved with the flow of the characters - exciting in parts, and quietly intense in others. There was not a dull passage in the entirety of the novel. I especially loved the side characters, and theme of familiar love and loyalty that played throughout the plot. Seeing characters from other books like Hadley and Rafe was an added treat, and one that I am incredibly thankful that the author choose to feature.
The conclusion really did me in. A satisfying ending to a wonderful series, it hurts me to say goodbye to these beloved characters. I honestly don't believe I could ever recover from this book, and I am ok with that. A Heart Sufficient is firmly in place as my favorite book, and one that I will enjoy rereading again and again. I will never tire of it.
If you have made it this far, I applaud you and it should be of no surprise that I recommend this book to you, fellow reader. You won’t regret a moment of it.
With that, I end this review with a profound thanks to Nichole Van for sharing the story of Tristan and Isolde with the world. And now, I’m off to read A Heart Sufficient once more.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own
This is probably a classic case of “it’s not the book, it’s me.” I can certainly understand why anyone would rate this book five stars—the whole section where Tristan and Isolde were stranded on the island rated five stars from me. The section where Isolde gifts Tristan with forgiveness deserved five stars. Unfortunately what surrounded it frequently rated two or three stars.
***spoilers***
I loved to hate Tristan in the beginning of this book. He was loathesome. Nasty. Malevolent, even, totally focused on his goals of gaining political power and destroying Hadley and, ergo, Hadley’s family, which included the lovely Isolde whom Tristan despised himself for wanting. I felt bad for Tristan’s abuse at the hands of his father, but his current situation engendered nothing but repugnance. A repugnant hero of a romance novel is problematic.
And I wasn’t buying his fiddle faddle about a pitcher and equal fullness (if you’re scratching your head over that, well, me too) as an explanation for his sudden conversion from ruthless hatred to enlightened love.
As for Isolde, her initial aversion to Tristan was completely understandable under the circumstances. But her careless actions with incriminating letters handed Tristan the ammunition to destroy her father and family, and her attempts to mitigate the damage were laughable. How am I supposed to be impressed with a woman who somehow thinks that underlining passages in the Bible and swiping her collarbone are going to change the mind of a monster? (What was that collarbone business about anyway? It’s not like she was going to follow up on it by seducing him.)
The compromise situation and marriage and nastiness in the carriage afterward was unpleasant. These two thought a lot but never said anything, or thought a lot and said the opposite of what they were thinking. Lack of communication was the main plot driver of the book, and it drives me crazy when intelligent, coherent thinking is followed by sullen silence supposedly because a character “can’t put their thoughts into words.” Guess what, authors? People put thoughts into words every day. If a person can think it, they can say it.
These two eventually make progress by exchanging (gasp!) words (which they had the ability to do all along), then Tristan turns back into Mr. Hyde and Isolde forgets everything she’s learned about Tristan because Papa! Until all that is resolved again, and Hadley’s legal troubles disappear by magic.
I was not impressed by this collection of things I dislike most about romance novels, but that doesn’t negate the lovely prose and the fact that Tristan is a fascinating and memorable MMC.
I truly have struggled with writing this review because I honestly just don't know how I can do this book justice knowing how truly amazing it is! This is the culmination of such a wonderful world that Nichole has created! I am truly just heartbroken that it is the end of this era and yet cannot wait to see what Nichole will write next!
Though you could attempt to read this as a stand alone it is so much better knowing the back stories of each character that drives this story and makes it that much better. So be sure to read: Suffering the Scot Romancing the Rake Love Practically Adjacent But Only Just One Kiss Alone
Plus since this beauty arrives on Feb 7th you have some time to get those read! Believe me once you start a Nichole Van book you won't be able to put them down 🙌
I absolutely loved this redemption story of Tristan because I have seen what he has endured since childhood. I loved that we not only saw him find love but also forgiveness and peace. He is such a complex character that you just can't help but fear and want to hug at the same time.
I also loved Isolde! I loved that she knew how to rile up Tristan. I love their chemistry together and how she was so key is Tristan's transformation. I loved that she was brilliant, could banter with Tristan and just see his potential.
This book is just so much more than a simple romance. It has depth, poetry and an intricately woven story that has been built throughout two series. It just is amazing through and through! I couldn't be happier with how this era has ended and will be thinking about this one for a long time to come!
Physical Intimacy Level: 2.5 (Descriptive making out without mention of tongue/implied intimacy between married couple-Fade to Black) Mild Swearing Dual POV
Reread 6/28: once again reminded HOW ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKING IT WAS! Nichole really outdid herself!! It's just one my new favorite romances. The way this story comes together over time. 😭🙌 I love their enemies to lovers chemistry and the pining from far away while trying to fight against it. 🫠 Anytime a GRUMPY guy falls first I'm a goner. 👏🏼 SO GOOD!
“I thought you the most beautiful creature I had ever seen.” A pause. “I still do.”
I loved this book SO MUCH!!!!A 2024 fav! Definitely my new fav Nichole book!!! She hit it out of the park with this one!!!!! Absolutely PERFECT! THE SLOW BURN between these enemies to lovers and the grumpiest Duke. 😍🥰 SWOON! Their build up and relationship over time was FANTASTIC! The way she did their mutual pining but also hating! So well done. I about died over all the forced proximity moments! My weakness!!!
I was so invested right away. I just adored every minute and actually took longer than I normally do because I wanted to savor it and didn't want it to end! So many moments I wish I could fan girl about but you gotta read it for yourself! But gosh! 🥰🥰🥰 So beautiful, I got all choked up! 🥹 It legit has so many tropes that are my favs too!!! Plus the way the final conflict was handled with so much grace, it made me SO HAPPY!!!! MUST ADD THIS TO YOUR TBR!
What happens when you end up in a compromising situation with the person you hate? This story is a beautiful tale of enemies to lovers, of learning to love and be loved, of being more than what’s expected of you, forgiveness, and healing. I loved seeing Tristan’s redemption and seeing so much woven in from the Black Tartan series.
TW: Life-threatening Situation, Past Parental Trauma CW: Mild Language, Descriptive Kissing, Fade to Black (married)
2025 reread update: I love this story even more upon rereading! I noticed different nuances and details about the characters by knowing what was to come, particularly some foreshadowing and bookended moments.
After reading book 3, I anticipated the setup for this one, and I just *knew* I would love seeing Tristan’s world get rocked by love. Before I began I was halfway in love with his prickly stubbornness already.
I expected an epic redemption story with this series conclusion — and I was absolutely not disappointed! This story telling Tristan’s, AKA the formidable Duke of Kendall’s, own history and path to finding love (not just romance! LOVE in its many facets and forms with family, friends, and romantic love), rivalry with Lord Hadley, and I-will-only-ever-love-Isolde HEA is a thrill from start to finish. Yes, there were times I wanted to strangle Tristan. Yes, there were times I wanted to cheer Isolde on as she brashly puts up with his actions only to find chinks in his chilly armor and the WARMEST heart underneath. Isolde is his match and complement in every way — in her bright intelligence, quick wit, passion for life, and effervescent nature, sometimes in contrast with his own personality but in a challenging, for-the-better way.
Tristan and Isolde’s romance has ample moments where their chemistry sizzles into physical passion and intellectual soulmate-level harmony — all while maintaining a closed door romance narrative. Their dynamic includes SO MANY tropes: love at first sight, enemies-to-frenemies-to-lovers, a marriage of convenience (!!!), and a little bit of forced proximity. In other words, ALL the emotions and swoons for the reader. It’s all tied up in a smart Victorian world of social class, innovation, family expectations, and culture (hello, Scottish geography).
This story unites characters from past books AND catches up with key characters from the Brotherhood of the Black Tartan series. Isolde is the daughter of book 1’s hero and Tristan is the brother of book 2’s hero. Story worlds unite!
Ms. Van sure knows how to write a captivating story. She sure had her work cut out with her with this one and our lead Tristan. I wondered how she would go about this story and I enjoyed seeing his and Isolde's story unfold. Full review to come.
Content Rated PG13 Closed door intimacy between married couple, kissing. Some talk of a brothel & Mild language. Mild violence - talk of past physical, mental abuse.
I can’t believe that I just read the last of the Penn-Leith series and this one was my fave of all. A burn so slow I still feel the effects from it and I finished it two hours ago. Tristian was the perfect grump of a hero if I’ve ever seen one. Watching him fall to his knees over Isolde was exquisite. The sheer agony and torture this man went through from everyone he’s loved in his life hurt my heart. Isolde was perfection. Sheer iron will, sunshiny perfection. The audiobook was spectacular and I cherish this story so much.
Grumpy H and sunshiny h fell in love years before. They meet again, strong enough to admit to their attraction but are forced to marry. Lots of adventure before their HEA. Loved it,
'"Democritus?" Tristan gaped in astonishment. "You blithely quote ancient Greek philosophers?"
She shrugged, that same teasing grin playing about her mouth. "We could move on to Shakespeare, if that is more tae your taste?"
Beautiful and educated. Tristan stared, utterly disarmed.'
Oh Tristan, Duke of Kendall, you have met your match with Isolde!
For anyone and everyone who has been reading this series this is the moment you've been waiting for. We've seen the Duke of Kendall in books 1, 2 AND 3 and everyone is here for it.
I've never been disappointed by a Nichole Van book. Never ever. My heart has also never been the same after reading any (and all) of her novels.
They are works of art that will rip your heart apart and then stitch it back up to a point where it feels more, understands more and wants to be more.
But, let's talk specifically about this book. Enemies-to-more, forced marriage, tons of forced proximity and two extremely stubborn characters.
Again, HERE FOR IT!
Both characters have their own development ARCS but Tristan's?! Wow. That one will break you down to nothing. I love series because by the end when things come full circle it all makes sense. He makes sense and what a character he is. Seriously, what a journey. I'm in awe at the development of his character because it was so encompassing of all of the things.
You will feel all of the emotions. All. Of. Them. And not just a little bit.
Nichole, doesn't do things by halfsies (and none of her fans ever want her to!).
Isolde is such a fun main character. I love her passion. I love that she wants to learn everything and doesn't let the status quo stop her. She is brave and headstrong in the best Scottish way. We all knew it would take a great force to take on Tristan and she does it beautifully!
258 highlights later this book was devoured in less than 24 hours and you will not be the same.
Nichole, I tip my hat to you and the amazing journey you took me on.
This book is available THIS WEEK (February 7th) and Amazon is showing both paperback and eBook are up for pre-order. If you've loved this series, or any of Nichole's books before don't miss out on this one. And read them in order-soooo much better that way!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Content: moderate amount of bible swears, grudges/family feuds, emotional abandonment, mention of a forced intimate night (no details), intimacy implied between a married couple (no details, but discussions are had when a marriage is forced.)
INFINITE STARS! 🤩 I am speechless. I don’t even have the words to adequately describe how absolutely BEAUTIFUL this book is and how much I LOVED Tristan and Isolde’s story.
Reading Nichole Van’s Brotherhood of the Black Tartan series (at least the first 2) and the other Penn-Leith books added so much depth to Tristan’s road to redemption and I highly recommend getting that foundation before you start this one.
I loved that we finally had Tristan’s perspective, including his hurts and trauma growing up with a cruel father, and how that shaped his frosty exterior. Isolde was the perfect complement to him and it was beautiful to watch them fall in love while learning to forgive and recognize what the other person needs.
This will be a book that I reread often. Seriously one of the most moving and romantic books I’ve ever read.
A Heart Sufficient had a promising premise, but the execution was a bit too sweet and saccharine—honestly, it made my teeth ache. I was expecting a cold, revenge-driven duke, but what I got was someone far too weepy and emotionally soft for my tastes. It didn’t go the way I hoped, and while it wasn’t a bad read, I ended up feeling disappointed.
CONTENT -🤬: mild language (7 a, 28 d, 20 h), crude language (11 bast***) -❤️: conversations about consummating their marriage, implied intimacy between a married couple -⚠️: abuse by a parent (recounted)
Well, I'm OBSESSED. After getting to know the Duke of Kendall a bit in the previous two books in the series, I was very curious to see how his own story would play out. I LOVE a good enemies-to-lovers romance, and this was exceptional. Tristan is literally trying to get Isolde's father impeached. This does NOT exactly lend to lovey-dovey feelings between them. But when a freak accident leads to them being locked in an outdoor shed thing overnight, there really is not any other option other than marriage. IT WAS DELECTABLE, Y'ALL.
I want to gush about everything, but I fear that would spoil it. I'll try to keep things vague. I absolutely loved seeing Tristan emerge from his Duke of Kendall shell. Learning about his past was so heartbreaking, but the tender way that Isolde sat with him and bore witness to his pain was so touching. I teared up, and that is a rarity for me. My gosh, when they finally kissed—WHEW! So good. And then the tender moment after they consummated their marriage (which we don't see)—IT WAS SO PRECIOUS. Oh my gosh. I also loved all the reconciliation and the forgiveness that occurred during the book. Now, don't mind me. I'll just be diving into A Heart Devoted right now.
Favorite Quotes: -"But my dreams are now turned to ash." "Then be a phoenix, Tristan. Rise from the ashes."
-"I thank God every day that my father is finally dead and gone.” “Aye, but the wounds he inflicted fester still.” Tristan said nothing; she was correct, as usual. She kissed the place above his heart again. “We will heal them together, Husband.”
-"When we finally come together, I want it to be because you love me. Not because I am a duke or your husband or a muscled chest you admired in a courtyard. I want you to come to my bed because you cannot help yourself. Because it is the only way to express the vast ocean of your longing. Because you will *die* if you don't have me. I want your heart, Isolde."
-"In short," he growled in his gravelly Kendall voice, "you already own my soul, Wife."
-This was the truest test, she realized. To love amid joy, when one was content and blissful and swimming in happiness . . . Such love was simple. Easily bestowed. But to love in the thick of crisis . . . When her beloved wept his regret—not expecting forgiveness to be granted but humbly begging for the chance to win her faith once more. To feel, in her heart, the pain of his sorrow more deeply than the sting of his betrayal.
-“I forgive ye.” His spine straightened, his head lifting. “But . . . why?” The choked bafflement in his voice nearly made her smile. “How? How can you? I have failed to—” “I forgive ye because that is what love does.”
Kendall is not well liked nor does he aim to please. He does his duty and feels compelled to make the world a better place through politics. With no love for Hadley, he actively has made it his mission to take him down. A mere accident with Hadley's daughter, Isolde, is a nightmare for all involved. She has pushed Kendall to his limits at every turn and a forced ceasefire becomes paramount for peace. So. much. love. for this book. I absolutely hesitated requesting the arc (due to time constraints) and that would have been a tragedy. The push. The pull! Incredible. Nichole really found the perfect counterpart to her stern overbearing duke in a fiery bighearted redhead. She created the best tension, yearning, heartbreak, all while staying true to their characters with a believable transition between enemies and lovers. It's easily one of my favorite historical romances I've read in some time. Thank you to the author for the advanced copy. All thoughts are my own.
“Do your worst, Your Grace.” She pivoted for the door. “I’ll be waiting for ye.”
Van pens a powerfully epic tale full of heart, redemption and more. Tristan, the Duke of Kendall, is intent on destroying everything and everyone in his path, as he grapples his way up the ranks of power, including a deep-seated family enemy–the Scottish Earl of Hadley. But the Earl’s coquettish, vibrant, and uncontrollable daughter, Isodole, is bent on changing that course.
There’s something so fascinating to me about the way Van writes. The words evoke such vivid images in my mind and the characters and situations leap off the pages. There is such a battle of contradictions that comes with every interaction–from physical appearances to irritations to clashes of character that result in explosive sparks of attraction.
These two challenge one another in jarring, yet exciting, ways and it was pure magic to watch this story unfold. I love this series and enjoyed every character arc and plot point to the extreme. This one is definitely on my favorites list for the year.
Content/TW: mild+ romance; vaguish talk of brothels and an experience there; mild language; mild moments of peril/danger

Ahh!! This is what romance book dreams are made of. So much angst! I adored Isolde and I equal parts wanted to hug and strangle Tristan. I loved this book! My favorite of the Pen-Leith series and a great ending to the series. Happy reading!
Kendall/Tristan has been a villain we all love to hate, but saw glimpses of a better man underneath it all in book 3. He was even injured trying to help. In this book we see his heartache, his loneliness, and the lost boy inside the cruel Duke. Clean romance. Surprising romance, even. Isolde is enough of a fighter that she can push against any orders from this guy. I love that we get to see Hadley and Rafe from a different series. Happy ending and this series is complete. Now I'm going to have to go reread them all. As always, Nichole Van takes a surface story like an enemies to lovers trope or marriage of convenience and we get to dive deep into emotions and tears and even some political mess. Wonderful journey where you sit and wonder where you've been after coming out of your book hangover.... And then do it again with her next book. Awesome. Best read in order to get the most out of it.
I knew from the moment that I heard Tristan would have his own story that I would love it. I was not wrong. He's been lurking in the background throughout the Penn-Leiths series, and I'm thrilled for him to be center stage. Tristan has experienced some of the worst of humanity at the hands of one who should have been the safe haven. Isolde has known the warmth of family that offers their truest selves to one another.
Tristan and Isolde were meant to be (perfect for the star-crossed lovers, right?).
Although everything from the outside would say otherwise - enmity of families, one a passionate giver of love, one a seemingly passionate giver of ice, the political scene, etc. - their unfolding story is just stunning.
Tristan's unraveling itself is stunning.
From a mistaken meeting at the emergence of adulthood, a spark was lit - and what a treasure to watch it fan into flame.
That Scottish landing and unintended escape from the world? 🔥🔥
All of the normal wonderful Nichole things are here: passion, slow burn, Scotland, Italian threads of soul language, witty thoughts and animal names. The story is poetic, multi-faceted, evocative, and causes readers to contemplate their own experiences of trust, abandonment, and the choice to try love.
Must read. You won't regret it.
This may be my favorite of Nichole's yet.
I received an early copy from the author. The thoughts shared here are completely my own.
Oh my heart. 🤍 Thank you SO much @nicholevan for the earc of A Heart Sufficient! 🤍
This book easily made my all-time favorites lists. It was a story of redemption, new beginnings, old heartbreak, healing, laughter, hope, and family.
Tristan is such a layered character, his past dictating his actions and his heart tucked away to avoid hurt. Isolde is fire and heart, his perfect match in wit and tenacity. A woman who can stand on her own and stand up to him.
The result is an explosion of chemistry between two unlikely people who actually have a lot more in common than they think.
It’s hard to express my depth of love for this story, but there are some books that find a place in your heart and touch you very deeply. That was this story for me, it’s a treasure.
Read for: • SWOONY kisses • family bonds • healing and forgiveness • Scotland setting And so much more 🤍

I ended up skipping the last two chapters, I couldn't take it anymore. This book was so overwritten. Lots and lots of telling instead of showing. The author has a nice prose style but she needs to reign it in and trust her readers. It got off to a slow start and picked up in the middle, but I was just so overwhelmed by all the needless explanations of everything the characters felt and thought (again... show don't tell!) that I ran out of patience.
Also the narrator was terrible. Why was everything delivered in a staccato rhythm. So wierd.
A Heart Sufficient by Nichole Van is one of the best Historical Romances I’ve ever devoured. Hands down, I loved every single second of this masterful Romance. This book is so good all on its own, but as a series concluder, it’s total perfection. This book had me feeling all the feels. I chuckled, I teared up a little, I wanted to punch the hero a couple of times, and I cheered SO hard for Tristan and Isolde. I wanted them to grow to love one another so much. There are many things about this story that I enjoyed, but the characters and the super sweet ending are my favorite aspects. Don’t worry. I won’t give away any part of the ending. Just know this story ends perfectly happily ever after, and brought a few tears of joy to my eye. I’m a sucker for character cameos, but the epilogue cameos in this series were the best. So sweet, and a perfect wrap-up to the four storylines. As far as characters go, what I have enjoyed about all of Van’s characters is how strong and capable and endearing all of them are. Each couple has been realistic and relatable. Tristan and Isolde are no exception. Both are strong, stubborn, highly intelligent, and unique. Tristan can be the absolute worst guy ever, but it comes from a place of deep pain and major childhood abuse. Once Tristan feels safe, he is the biggest, squishiest marshmallow ever. I loved getting to see this side of him, and I love that Isolde is the one who brings out Tristan’s soft, gooey heart. This story is an enemies-to-lovers story. Usually, this is not my favorite trope because I can’t stand all the fighting, but Van has done this trope right. At just the right time, both Tristan and Isolde begin to thaw towards one another and it leads to some of the sweetest and swooniest moments of the series. Another aspect to this series that I’ve really enjoyed — Van’s novels are not fluffy, Hallmark-y Romances. As with the prior three books, A Heart Sufficient is another story I highlighted like crazy. There are so many good moments, timely thematic moments, that could lead to some deep, heartfelt discussion. A Heart Sufficient would make for a really good book-club book.
I have loved every single second of the Penn-Leiths of Thistle Muir series, but A Heart Sufficient will go down as my favorite. This book is just perfect. I’m sad my time with these characters is over, but I’m leaving this series with such a sense of giddiness and joy that can only come from the best of stories. If you’re a fan of superb Historical Romance then I cannot recommend this series enough. I implore you to purchase a copy of the Penn-Leiths of Thistle Muir series today. You will not be disappointed you did.
