Rate this book
Miss Jillian Thornburg, daughter of Major Thornburg, was forced by her father to marry a dying officer. Her father had returned briefly from the battle near Waterloo and told her that her fiancé had been killed. The situation was dire for the Allied forces, and he feared she would be left alone and nearly penniless. Therefore, he forced her to marry a dying officer to obtain his pension.

Shortly after her new husband died, Jillian and her maid moved back to England and into the tiny cottage of her former nurse. Jillian quickly realized she needed to seek employment, so she accepted the position of governess in the same county where her fiancé, Capt. Simon Islington, grew up.

She was shocked to discover that not only was her new employer the brother of Captain Islington, but the captain was very much alive. Simon was furious that she had not waited for him and had married another man. Would he ever forgive her?

It started out very fun to read, but such a slow predictable ending!
