The Rugby Lovers

Every Version of You

Rate this book
What happens when a romance book-loving woman on a journey of self-discovery has her whole world altered when she finds her childhood best friend got her pregnant by accident?

Lots of hormones, role playing, banter, and angst.

Angie Johanssen is the oldest of five siblings and has been taking care of her family since she was a child. Now she puts her personal experience to professional use as a children’s therapist. But encouraging her patients to talk about feelings is much easier than admitting she has them for her best friend and new roommate.

Eight man and CFO Rafael Jimenez is a goofy, playlist-making, salsa-dancing rugby player for Philadelphia's D1 team with his eyes set on bachelorhood. But when he moves back to the city, and his curvy best friend needs a place to live, he offers up his spare bedroom just like old times.

However, when the tequila starts flowing at his housewarming party and Rafael wakes up in bed with Angie—the sister to three of his teammates—will bachelorhood be as appealing as it once was? Can he rediscover his teenage crush?

If there is one thing Sloan excels at it is writing stories that pull you in. I read this in a single day thanks to her sharp pacing, relatable characters, and truly phenomenal spice. No one writes spice quite like Sloan.

Some parts did not fully work for me. Even so, I know many readers will find so much to love here. Sloan’s heart is on every page, and I hope this book reaches the audience it deserves.

CALLING ALL LOVERS OF...
- badass and hilarious plus size heroine
- CFO/rugby player hero (suits AND short shorts)
- camping trip w some interesting revelations
- k*nk exploration and spicy roleplay scenarios
- two hot switches... dom/sub going both wayssss
- surprise pregnancy
- complex family dynamics
- friends with benefits
- friends to lovers

I don’t even want to come back to my body after finishing this book. The reading experience was so swoon-worthy, the perfect complex mix of pure joy and emotional damage. I was totally swept away by Raf and Angie’s love story, and had so much fun reading the wild sexual exploration they get up to during Angie’s surprise pregnancy. Raf steps up to “take care of her needs” despite them deciding to stay “just friends” and CO-parents to the upcoming bbs. SURE, GUYS :) The kink exploration and role-play scenarios they act out were actually so funny to me, it felt so freeing and goofy to be able to laugh along with it as they display their ultimate trust in one another to be the most vulnerable they’ve ever been both in and out of the bedroom.

Angela , Angie, Angel, Zofia Johannson … the GODDESS that she is. It made me feel so happy and seen to read her acceptance and celebration of her fat body <3 IMO, she gets EVERYTHING she deserves to have Rafael worship her body and be at her beck and call through the magical months of her pregnancy. GOOD! FOR! HER! She is also a children’s mental health counsellor, and this is significant to her backstory of having lost her mother at a young age and having to be the one to parent all of her younger siblings when her father couldn’t step in to do that. She defines a parentified child and she is constantly working on boundaries with her siblings and giving herself grace to feel and heal from this trauma.

Rafael Jimenez…. The SLUTTY KING that he is. I’ve never read a more perfect, caring, sunshiny rugby babe in my life. I adored not just himself and his relationship with Angie, but I also loved Raf’s family and the role they played in the book for both him and Angie. Raf has 2 loving moms that are such a strong, healthy example of love. Even though he has this, he still struggles a lot with defining his emotions and desires because of the shallow, unstable relationship with his father. As a child of divorced parents with both mommy and daddy issues, Rafael’s character really spoke to me and offered me validation to know that it’s not a child’s fault if they idolize their parent, even if said parent is a shitty person.

There’s seriously SO MUCH to love about this romance and if any of the tropes strike your fancy, you should totally give this a chance. I can also HIGHLY recommend Sloan Spencer’s other 2 romance novels, the Structure duet, which might even enhance your reading experience of EVOY, because those main characters are here too! We looooooove Marco, Jay, and Cora <333333 CAN”T WAIT FOR MORE INSTALMENTS IN THE RUGBY LOVERS WORLD :’)

The internal dialogue 😭 be prepared to read about characters who are struggling with self-worth and accepting love. It was an interesting choice to use friends to lovers because I think these 2 would not have overcome their relationship demons without having a preexisting relationship. Get ready to cry or have some feelings tap danced on. Rafael's epiphany with therapy was too easy. It almost felt like he didn't want to lose his family so he got it together. I could ignore that part bc the conversations about their Dom/sub dynamic were really great. They were constantly negotiating and talked through their discomforts.

Catch me crying in the club (brewery) while I finished this book before book club last night. Did I also drop into @sloan_spencer_author DMs? You betcha 😅

I wish my memory was better and I could remember who shared that Sloan was looking for ARC readers (I know I know I didn't need anymore ARCs) but I'm glad this is how I ended month one of ARC-mageddon.

This continues my year (since last July) of giving accidental/surprise/unexpected pregnancy (when done well) a chance. After reading Out on a Limb last July...I welcomed the notion that this trope could be enjoyable. And what both Sloan and @authorhannahby do in their books is create this beautiful friendship between our main characters and that's what keeps me reading.

Every Version of You is perfect for those who enjoy -
✨Friends to Lovers
✨Found Family
✨Rugby (shorts)
✨Plus size FMC
✨Queer Rep

I'll be going back and reading Cora's books - that is right up Angie alley! Bonus points for our FMC also being named Angie 🤭

Thank you Sloan for the opportunity, all thoughts and emotional blabbering is my own. Every Version of You is out now and available on KU!

This book was like if Next to You and Out on a Limb had a baby. This was a cute friends to lovers romance and spoiler alert, they accidentally get pregnant. It was so sweet seeing Raf, the mmc do every little thing for Angie. I loved the representation shown in this book and all I can also say is thick thighs save lives 😛 I didn't like the conflict and plot twist though, it was not needed especially at the 90% mark.

I wanted to like this book so much more than I actually did.

The characters were likable and their relationship was really sweet. The bond between the two MCs and their community was really well done.

That being said, some of the dialogue just felt a little goofy. I just hate when authors try to use too many “internet” phrases or pop culture references!! SUE ME!

Loved this! And probably found a new favorite author. The writing was great. It was easy and casual with a bit of humor and a lot of heart. I felt like I was reading about real people and was hooked right away. The friends and family were just nosy and pushy enough to be realistic without going over the top. The cultural, relationship, and gender and sexuality representations were naturally included. The spicy parts were hot and moderately plentiful. Raf role playing as a Kraken for Angie is my new favorite thing from a contemporary romance.

I know not everyone loves an accidental pregnancy trope but do give this a try. It was a large part of the story, but the greater part was about confronting emotions and learning to embrace the good right in front of you.

I will absolutely go back to read Cora's story and look forward to more books from this author.

One of my favorite romances of all time is now on audio!

Unexpected pregnancy is an oft maligned trope given the myriad options for contraception in today's world. I am trash for this trope though. It's far and away one of my favorites. Throw in some childhood friends to lovers and I'm done for.

Angela and Rafael (Raf) have been best friends since they were ten years old, secretly loving one another all the while and believing their love unrequited. After a drunken night neither of them remember, Angela learns she is pregnant. As a consequence of her pregnancy hormones, these two agree to a friends with benefits arrangement for the duration of the pregnancy. Some of the hottest scenes in recent memory ensue and I. Was. Here. For. It. These two explore BDSM, dom-sub dynamics, primal play, role playing, and more. Insanely hot!

It was just as hot and funny as I remember. And this cover is still my all time favorite. Just look at them!

This was not my favorite read, but it was decently written.

Personally, I’m not a fan of music being thrown in throughout a story. I love music and listen to all genres, but find obscure music references annoying.

Some of the spice also read like someone shyly explaining dark romance kinks. And no character was just straight. Everyone was either gay, bi, trans whatever. When the only thing you know about a side character is their name and orientation, then they’re pretty much a useless character and only there to unnecessarily push lgbt representation. Which fine, but give some other development to these characters if you’re going to include them.

The writing itself was decent though. You get to see Cora and her now husbands from previous books. And the friends to lovers trope with an accidental pregnancy is always fun to read. I’m sure others will like this more than I did.

Have you ever struggled to articulate what you need to say so you just scream from excitement? Because that’s where I’m at. Sloan Spencer has a way of making her characters feel so real and so tangible. I was transported into Angie and Rafs story and I didn’t want it to end. I felt all the emotions while reading this; I was weeping one moment, screaming the next and belly laughing all over. It was written beautifully. Hands down the best book I read in June!

Also, Raf plays rugby and if Raf playing rugby makes Angie swoon I need to see a rugby game irl. Can we also talk about how huge these rugby thighs are?! It was so cute to see glimpses of Cora, Jay & Marco too!
spice - 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Every Version of You is a rugby romcom with the trigger warnings of a dark romance. This story follows childhood best friends that have secretly been in love with each other for decades.

“What I want is someone to be obsessed with me the way I am about them. I want an all-consuming love bracketed by commitment. I want to laugh with someone about the dumbest, most cringe-worthy moments until we could pee ourselves, and then we’d laugh from sheer disgust.”

This cover is so hot, don’t even @ me.

I say this with the most respect, this book was quite the read. I highlighted so much in my kindle cause I adored Angie and Raf’s inner thoughts and how they think and see the other person. Their friendship was absolutely wonderful and I loved seeing them navigate the future of being parents, their kinks, and the different ways they love each other.

Something I appreciate from this childhood friends to lovers book is that we could still see and feel how deep Angie and Raf’s friendship is without needing flashbacks.

Also, we all know I love a plus size curvy queen heroine.

- pregnancy trope
- childhood best friends to lovers
- horny af
- roleplay kink ( they do a lot of roleplay
- dom sub / domme sub

I really. Liked this a lot and I’m excited to read more from this author . -

The friends to lovers trope is something I always love . Seeing these two just be together made me swoon . Turns out they had Been acting like a couple since forever yet never dated . The eventual I love you scene Was perfect .

There is a mini 3rd act breakup of sorts .

This was a fun read and I loved every second of it

This is also technically a Rugby romance but it didn’t focus heavily on it ( thank god) - I’m not a rugby fan

I will 10000% be getting this to own physically .

This has a lot of queer characters in the mmcs brother is a trans man , his mother is bi ( maybe ) / a lesbian ) and has a wife . The mmc is bi !!!

I really did like Rafael and Angie I thought they were quite cute and I loved their dynamic .

3.5/5 🌶️ Multiple explicit scenes including kink and roleplaying. See content warnings for details.

There need to be more rugby books written. Rugby players are sexy AF. I’m not just saying that because I played rugby either. It just is a true statement. The thighs. Anyway.

This is cute AF. Horny AF. Lots of emotions if you’re into that. Great book. Highly recommend. Don’t like accidental pregnancy? Mmm. Honestly, you’re entitled to your wrong opinion, but this is really good not even in spite of the accidental pregnancy…but like BECAUSE of it? Like, it’s done really well even if I found it a little unrealistic in some places and often wanted to shake the MMC. I regularly want to shake non-fictional men, so there’s that.

Content & trigger warnings: accidental pregnancy, anal, BDSM, choking, consensual nonconsent, Domination/submission, dubious consent, gunplay, pegging, pregnancy, primal play, roleplaying, somnophilia, toys

This was a great Rugby romance friends to lovers, dual POV, accidental pregnancy indie romance!! Spicer than I'm usually used to but with fantastic mental health rep and psychological insights into grief over lost loved ones, family trauma and toxic parental relationships. The sexual fantasies between besties Raf and Angie were highly entertaining and the chemistry between these two was top notch! Looking forward to the next book in the series!! Many thanks to the author for a digital ARC copy in exchange for my honest review!

That one book...

That will live rent from on my mind for a while. How is this the first book I've read that isn't toxic? It's filled with so much communication, friendship, intimacy and love that it just blows my mind.
I also have to give a shout out to the author for giving a real Latino culture description of the characters and their personalities. I have to say, it's hands down on of the best books with Latino representation written by a non-latino ( who knows, she might have some blood).

I laughed. I cried. I wanted to throw the book at the wall.

I absolutely loved everything about this book and couldn't put it down. (I've read it twice already 👀). It was beautiful and emotional and I felt like I was there with them the entire time. Rafael and Angela were made for one another and couldn't be more perfect. Also, plus size? Pregnancy? Sports? Sign me up for anything. The book was a perfect blend of everything and I can't wait for anything else Sloan Spencer writes!

This was a beautiful friends to lovers story, featuring a Latinx MMC and his plus sized best friend. I thoroughly enjoyed the peppering of Mexican culture and Spanish language in the book. Angie and Raf’s friendship is beautiful, from the day they met as children to the day they find out their having a baby, their bond is unbreakable.

The way their families are interwoven and have inside jokes and family traditions together is touching. I especially loved the queer diversity. Queer people are in all communities and to see Latinx queer/trans folks represented was beautiful
We also get a chance to catch up on Cora, Jay & Marco from Structural Support and the fact that Angie & Cora get to be preggo together is the best. We love when besties birth the next gen of besties together.

Oh my gosh!

I absolutely loved this book!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

From the moment I started reading, I really felt like I was befriending Angie and Raf. I loved Angie when she showed up in the Structural Duet and it was so awesome to really dig into her story. Sloan Spencer so far has been so good at making really interesting main characters that I get so invested in and I can’t wait for more!

This book made me feel all the feelings. There were parts where I cried tears of sadness and joy, their banter and the banter with the other characters was super funny at times, and the 🌶️🌶️ spice🌶️🌶️! Oh my goodness. It’s so good!!

1.75 ( don’t think I can round up to 2)

This one was not my cup of tea. I fell for another TikTok quote pull and wanted to give it a try. I’ve been in such a slump. I found the characters to be not very likeable, I found their miscommunication to be extremely annoying. I think the author tried to combat that by emphasizing their history but that somehow made it so much worse. The spice was super cringy to me. A lot of it felt very forced and icky, it’s just not my kind of spice. I felt like this book had so much happening but nothing happened at the same time. I caught myself rolling my eyes at some of the plot choices. Anytime I felt like it was cute or on the right track it would fall back into the patterns of plot and writing I do not enjoy. Once again I didn’t really like this one. But hey, I actually finished so that’s gotta mean something.

Content warning: The author provides a content warning at the start of this book that states based on the contents this may seem like a dark romance - it is not, this is a fluffy romantic comedy. This book includes:

I went into this book expecting your run-of-the-mill friends-to-lovers romance but was pleasantly surprised by what I found and enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

Angie was a fun and sunshiny heroine with a big heart and a very friendly demeanor. Whilst Rafael was a goofy, sweet, and sunshiny hero. Individually they were characters I came to quickly like and root for and I enjoyed seeing their development from friends to partners. Despite the very light-hearted feel of this book both of the main characters were given complicated pasts that had an effect on how they acted within the present day. For Angie she was a mother hen who looked out for those closest to her, especially her brothers who treated her like a mum, after living through a parentified childhood. It was something she was coming to terms with whilst learning to set boundaries and was an important and admirable aspect of her character growth. Rafael’s complexity came in the form of insecurities and feeling like he was never going to be enough which led to him having difficulty with identifying and owning his emotions. He was wary of showing emotional vulnerability and it was the growth of learning how to do this that was an endearing aspect of his arc.

Angie and Rafael were childhood friends practically from the moment that he gravitated towards her on his first day at a new school and thought of her as a bright splash of colour on an otherwise grey day. Over 22 years of friendship they’d each had moments of feeling like the other wanted more but nothing had ever happened until one (forgotten) drunken night resulted in a positive pregnancy test that changed everything.

As important as their romantic relationship development was, it would be nothing without the foundation of their friendship. These two were close in a way that was unlike anything they shared with others and shared an automatic and genuine affection. You could easily identify how special their bond was and their ability to tease and have fun together was my favourite aspect of it. When it came to their romance development it was, in my opinion, very much born of sexual intimacy and attraction but I didn’t find that to diminish its significance. With news of their fast approaching parenthood Angie and Raf started to plan how it was going to work and with more time spent together things started to change. For Raf he found himself needing a reminder of their platonic nature whilst Angie struggled with the raging hormones and the effect Raf was having on her body. Agreeing to be friends with benefits for the duration of the pregnancy seemed to be a no brainer and worked out better than they were expecting. This became the part of the book where the content warning surrounding kink came in and what I liked about their transition into friends with benefits and later romantic partners was that it wasn't awkward at all, they very quickly figured out that each had specific interests in the bedroom and what I appreciated was the fact they sat down, set up rules, and discussed their limits even to the point of filling out documents that detailed them. Their deep dive into depravity upped the heat levels of this book to much more than I was expecting and made this a very spicy romance where the kinks just kept on coming. Whilst I found the sexual chemistry route into romance to over shadow the emotional chemistry one I can appreciate that the piece was well written, paced, and developed in a way that suited both characters. What I appreciated about it more however was how they kept their sincerity, and lighterhearted fun which made their sexual chemistry and exploration special and uniquely them in a way that enabled the reader to have fun and laugh along with them as they displayed an ultimate level of trust. We saw how these two characters were one another's comfort zones and they fell into a comfortable pattern that neither of them wanted to give up and a relationship just kind of blossomed from that without being fully defined.

I can appreciate the 3rd act conflict for how it fit in with the characters and their struggles that had been depicted up till that point without an attempt to resolve them but I do think it happened quite late in the book and therefore felt rushed in its execution and resolution. That isn’t to say I didn’t enjoy it because it tied in well with the character arcs and forced Angie and Raf to admit vulnerability to one another that had previously gone unsaid and provided that final step in their growth as individuals and as a couple. However, I thought we weren’t given enough on-page depiction of them overcoming their conflict and post conflict. The book appeared to jump straight into the happily ever after without giving them a chance to discuss, in a level of depth that I felt was needed, what they were going to do to move forward from the breakup.

The book revolved around the romance and main character arcs so there aren't any significantly developed secondary plots to comment on but there were plenty of secondary characters with strong on page appearances that added to the story. Angie and Rafael’s families were a close knit bunch, each with their own rich backstories that served to both aid and hinder the romance development. Their on page appearances were enjoyable and I liked seeing how our main characters interacted with their own families and each other. The stand out secondary characters for me however were Cora, Jay, and Marco, their friends. I loved this trio’s dynamic and the support and humour they brought to the book and desperately wanted to know more about them so I was excited to learn they had their own duet and knew I would be reading that too.

Every Version of You was a laugh out loud fun and spicy read. I’m glad I picked this one up and it definitely is not going to be the only book by Spencer that I read.

Favourite Quote(s):
‘There is a very selfish part of me though that feels cheated from not remembering the act. Because having sex with your very attractive best friend-a woman so wildly confident and beautiful-is something I would have liked to remember.

I've been robbed.’

‘But none of my tattoos mean as much as the letter J inked over my heart. The same one Angie has slightly below her left collar bone in a more delicate font. It was our gift to each other when we graduated from undergrad - a testament to our friendship both for the past and the future.
Johanssen and Jimenez. We were always meant to stay together.’

Mostly good

Mostly good but a few pain points I couldn't get past and almost DNF:
(spoilers, I guess?)

1. DO. NOT. DRINK. WHILE. PREGNANT. NOT EVEN A LITTLE BIT. Multiple times she says "it's ok, I can have a little bit." NO! No amount of alcohol is safe during pregnancy!! Literally, take 5 seconds to Google it.
2. She really couldn't tell she had sex with a dude slanging 10 inches??

This was one of my least favorite romance books. The characters did not seem authentic. The story was not very creative. The main characters having sex and neither one remembering a thing was very unrealistic! I enjoy LGTBQ characters, but the main character Raph having two moms, a transgender sibling, a gay couple as best friends While being Bi himself just felt super unrealistic. Just a very mediocre read at best.

I always read for vibes and I don’t like to over analyze things in books but OH MY GOD this book was not it. It had some things/themes that really rubbed me the wrong way and it made me cringe a lot.

I think I should’ve dnf’ed it sooner but because i wanted to see where it was going i kept going and given that I finished it, a 2 ⭐️ rating is me being generous :)
