Modern Problems

Rate this book
In the middle of an ordinary workday, a high-rise suddenly goes under full lockdown to contain a deadly riot. There’s no explanation given, all lines of communication inside the building have been severed, and the only person with the slightest clue about what’s going on is the reclusive billionaire who lives on the top floor. As bodies pile up in the lobby and everyone scrambles for answers, it comes down to a few unlikely heroes to step up, figure things out, and stop the senseless killings.

In an age where information is currency and we depend on technology to keep pace, it sometimes feels like stopping to assess means falling behind. For billionaire technocrats like Erol Zane, this breakneck pace is an advantage; but for just about everyone else who lives, works, or visits The Roark on that fateful day in mid-November, not keeping up could mean death.

When a dangerous experimental drug treatment goes awry, the building’s wealthiest residents suddenly wage war on the working class, and they all find themselves trapped inside a sixty-six-floor luxury prison. Mix in an armed but timid group of untrained security guards, a powerful AI system that no one’s aware of, and a previously unknown sexual side-effect to the drug, and pretty soon everyone is faced with MODERN PROBLEMS.

Wesson Renick's Modern Problems is a thrilling literary adventure that seamlessly weaves together vivid imagery and lifelike characters. The narrative not only grips you with its suspense but also paints a tapestry of emotions through its rich and detailed descriptions. The characters breathe with authenticity, making their experiences resonate deeply with the reader. Beyond the excitement, Renick skillfully addresses the theme of class warfare, adding layers of complexity to the storyline. Modern Problems is not just a novel; it's a thought-provoking journey that lingers, challenging perceptions and leaving an indelible mark on the literary landscape.

like different surreal plays had a baby

Imagine combining the play version of Asteroid City with thriller/drama. I was always intrigued about what would happen next, and I couldn’t predict any of the outcomes. I enjoyed reading this, and it reminds me of other “out there works”. Maybe like “Falling Sideways,” or “Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse”. Read it for fun.

Synopsis sounds like some of my favorite movies, like Judge Dredd and Snowpiercer combined. I will absolutely read this!
