I do love a good police procedural series and this is a really good one!
A number of very unpleasant murders keep Kay and her team exceedingly busy as they have very little information to work with. Bit by bit they get closer to discovering the culprit until eventually one lucky break makes all the facts add up and they have their answer.
I enjoy the police work in this series. The team work effectively together and Kay is a brilliant leader. She also has a delightfully successful home life which is not really the norm for this type of book. Her husband is a vet who tends to bring his patients home. This time it is baby hedgehogs which apparently look cute but have very unpleasant bodily functions.
A great read and I highly recommend it. Even better if you start with the first book in the series.

The woman was dead, brutally mutilated with shocking injuries. The isolated farmhouse, which was meant to be a rural getaway for the couple who found her, was anything but. Detective Kay Hunter and her team were immediately struggling to find answers, when a second body was found, then a third; all with the same type of injuries and showing evidence of torture. It felt, to Kay and her fellow detectives, like they were floundering in quicksand - nothing to give them anything to go on, in finding a sadistic killer. Would a break through come? Would they stop the killer before another person died?
A Deadly Promise is the 13th in the Detective Kay Hunter series by Aussie/British author Rachel Amphlett and it was an intense, chilling and gritty thriller! This is an excellent series, with Kay's detective character one of the best I've read in awhile. Adding to her nature is Adam, her partner, who is a vet. This time, in the brief off time Kay has, there are cute baby hedgehogs to feed and cuddle (and clean up after). Highly recommended.

One of my favourite detective series, I love Kay Hunter and her team. Alison Campbell is the perfect voice for Kay, and she does the voices for the other characters so well too. Who needs a full cast narration when you are as talented as Alison. I have listened to most of the books in this series and just love her work.
This will be a challenging and dark case for Kay. The murders are brutal and violent and there seems to be no apparent connection. As the bodies pile up the more pressure the team are under. Working on little sleep, they need to find find this killer and fast.
Set in the Maidstone area of the UK is another selling point for this series, one of my favourite places in England. My dad grew up there and I fell in love with it when he took us there. I recognised some of the locations in this story, like Moat Park.

A Deadly Promise is the latest (2024) instalment in British-Australian author Rachel Amphlett's series featuring Maidstone (UK) based Detective Inspector Kay Hunter and her team.
The book opens with the gruesome discovery of a dead woman by a couple who have booked short-stay accommodation at a plush property near Maidstone, Kent. D.I. Kay Hunter and her team mobilise to investigate the death, which is soon followed by the discovery of another body hidden at a storage facility nearby, and a third victim is found dumped by the River Medway. There appears to be nothing to link the victims, beyond that each was in a state of financial extremis, but with the identification of an important detail, Hunter's team finally begin to close in on the villain.
As with previous books in the series, A Deadly Promise is a solid police procedural with a strong cast of characters, that would read perfectly well as a standalone for newcomers to the series, but will bring added enjoyment to those who have followed the series-level character development. D.I. Hunter's domestic life brings light relief to the grittier elements of the crime narrative, in this outing featuring a litter of hedgehog pups that her vet partner is fostering.
I'd recommend A Deadly Promise to those readers who enjoy complex crime plots, strong characters and stories that portray modern police procedures with admirable verisimilitude.

This was a fun, fast paced police procedural. I actually didn’t know it was part of a series and can definitely be read as a stand alone. The author kept me engaged throughout. This wasn’t a cozy mystery and it also wasn’t a shocking thriller; I’d consider it more of a reliable, straight forward, nothing too crazy kind of book to read by the pool this summer.
The narrator for this audiobook was enjoyable to listen to and I’ll be reading more from this author, for sure.

3.5 Stars. This felt a lot like reading an episode of Law and Order and I liked it. It does read as a standalone book but is the 13th book in a detective series. It was fast paced and easy to read, and I really enjoyed the main character, Kay and her team. I loved her husband and his affinity for animals. I will definitely be reading another one in the series!

This is a favorite series, and I'm never disappointed by the stories, which are British police procedurals. I particularly enjoy reading these books with my ears because of the delightful accents, and the oh-so-British politeness and style. A DEADLY PROMISE was a bit more graphic than others in the series, with the details and cruelties of the murders unfathomable, yet believable, in these warped times we live in.
In A DEADLY PROMISE, the 13th book in the Detective Kay Hunter series, all the familiar characters are in place, with hints that some of the favorites may be moving on to bigger roles and callings. The characters and setting are realistic, including how budgets and cost-cutting are impacting the efficacy of Kay's team to do their jobs.
As is the case in most books in the series, there is some relief from the horrendous casework in the home life Kay shares with her veterinarian partner, Adam. The animals-at-home shenanigans are always chuckle worthy, and I find I relax as much as Kay does when she walks through her front door.
When all was finally revealed, I did struggle a bit with the grisly murder motive making sense. It seemed to be counterintuitive, but then, the murderer is clearly more motivated to fill a sick need than anything else, despite anything said otherwise.
ABOUT THE NARRATION: Alison Campbell, as always, provides an outstanding performance. Campbell’s pacing is even, her diction perfectly clear. I listened at 1.2x for my own patience and comfort, but regular speed was fine. At this point in the series, she has mastered the voices for the key returning players, and that's something awesome that these characters each sound the same as they have from the beginning.
Even with the less-than-ideal resolution in A DEADLY PROMISE, I recommend this and all the books in this series to those who enjoy riding along with a team of detectives to solve crimes. Each stands alone just fine, but I'd recommend starting at the beginning. Here, Kay is at the top of her detective game, but I have enjoyed watching her climb every rung of the ladder within the department, and it's more satisfying having gone on that journey with her.

Enjoyed this from the beginning. I am surprised to see it is the thirteenth book in a series. It read as a standalone. The characters were well-developed and comfortable with the dialogue reasonable and age-appropriate. There wasn't any childish bantering.
The book reminded me of Prime Suspect, a PBS Masterpiece Theatre Series.
I found the story easy to follow; however, the police procedures translate better on paper than audio for me. On paper I have the option of skimming whereas during the audiobook every word is repeated. I would have liked less repetitive questioning and repeating what they found so far.
I enjoyed the story and the characters. The reason for the crime made me pause and think wow -- I didn't see this coming. There was a lot going on as the story closed with multiple females talking at the station; all were speaking at once, trying to be heard, accusing each other and the Detective was female. I found it taxing.
The narrator did a good job. I have picked up audiobooks based on her credentials and will continue in the future.
I found this to be smart, complicated and a little dark. I am going to check out the other twelve books (Detective Kay Hunter) in the series.

Book 13 in the Kay Hunter series but can be read as a standalone. I am blown away by this one! The story is fast paced, multiple murders with seemingly no motive or suspects. I loved being with Kay and the team again on this can of worms murder! I definitely couldn't do Kay's job!
I liked the fact there were multiple stories going on, different pov's as such from the victims, made it feel more genuine. Scary to think how some things can spiral if not controlled! Some of the clues really did open a can of worms, potential leads, recognisable suspects, it was gripping to read and I flew through this book! I feel I want to say so much about the different characters but you need to read to feel them properly, their personalities, their fears etc, it all adds to the storyline so well.
I love Rachel's writing style, this is the second book that I have read by her and I look forward to reading more as they come but also going through the ones earlier in the series!

Another excellent installment in the Kay Hunter series, with some very grisly murders along the way. The title makes more sense when you get to the end. This one was made all the more interesting for me as I met the author while I was reading it, and gained insight into the Kay Hunter character, and where she came from.

I do love this series. I've been hooked since the very first book and it is hard to believe that this was seven years ago now. What a journey we've been on with Kay since then. In this latest book she is faced with a very challenging and perplexing investigation, the brutal murder of a woman by masked intruders who entered the property in which she was working as a cleaner. Subjected to a prolonged and very violent attack, it is hard for Kay and the team to pin point a motive.
This book is packed with tension and mystery. It becomes apparent to readers much earlier than to the police what the motives for murder might be, as we are present with one of the victims as they come face to face with the person who will decide their fate. Rather cleverly though, whilst we get the impression of the why, Rachel Amphlett has hidden from us the who, leaving many question marks over the group of suspects the team already have. As the body count rises, so do the challenges that the team face and the pacing and urgency of the book as the need for a quick resolution becomes clear.
I love the team that the author has created here. Kay Hunter is a brilliant lead character, someone you grow to like very quickly and who you implicitly trust. Far from the earlier days in which she was caught up in a kind of conspiracy of the worst kind, the recent books have focused very much on Kay and team and their investigations, whilst still allowing us those quiet and happy moments that occur around Kay's home life. As anyone who follows the series will know, Kay's partner, Adam, is a vet and often brings his clients home. His latest lodgers are super cute, if a tad smelly, leading to the odd moment of laughter in amongst what is, in truth, quite a dark story. Add in the wider team of her ever trustworthy partner, DS Ian Barnes, DC Gavin Piper and DC Laura Hanway, and it's a team I love to return to time and again. They are the kind you really root for, and characters it is easy to spend time with, not having to second guess motives or whether or not you can trust them. In fact, Piper excels himself this time, showing how far he has comes from his early days on the team.
The case is actually quite dark, the execution of the murders stark and a touch grotesque. Rachel Amphlett keeps most of the depravity off the page, but there is no doubting the heinous nature of the crimes. As for the suspects, there is quite the array, and whilst focus may remain in one area for a while, the author keeps the mystery going and gives readers plenty of reason to doubt their own assertions. The reveal, when it comes, is actually a touch of a surprise, but not so much that you cannot, with the benefit of hindsight, spot the clues that you may have missed. It's. actually quite a fitting conclusion to the story and one that demonstrates the problem with making assumptions, something I admit I was a touch guilty of throughout.
Another brilliant, thrilling and mystery laden investigation, with building tension and terrific characterisation as always. Definitely recommended for fans of the series.

A lot of bloodshed, but this is very much a traditional old-school police procedural, true to the genre and honest with it. Its light on thrills and spills, there is some danger, but it is the story of an investigation largely as seen by the investigating officers.
Kay Hunter is dedicated and determined investigator, and rarely for crime fiction well adjusted. She rides her team hard but is fair and generous, so they respond in kind. Their camaraderie shines through whether their enthusiasm is realistic or not doesn't matter it provides touches of normal life, preventing the story becoming too dark.
The plot is detailed rather than complex, but played out gradually so the reader can never get ahead of themselves, here it is cleverly constructed. Halfway through you might think, as I did, that doesn’t make sense that would be the last thing the killer would do. Then Kay Hunter points out this logical fallacy, so there must be more to it. The answer is as brilliant as it is simple.
The writing is perfectly judged, it moves along at pleasingly rapid pace, such that you are just digesting that last small revelation when the next one arrives. It never falls into the trap of becoming dull, the form filling authenticity that some authors love (and write so well) is omitted and the little details of the investigation are introduced within the regular team briefings. There are no brilliant deductions appearing to come from nowhere, but solid hard graft and teamwork, reviewing CCTV footage, trawling the internet and archives.
There is a nice down-to-earth feeling to the story telling style. An early description of a street with its pavement a patchwork of holes left by utility companies and covered in dog faeces, then later a man urinating in bus shelters gives it a sense of honesty. Then there is the desperation of the victims, that of the poor, those disadvantaged of society, suffering from sheer bad luck or addiction. A sense of desperation is there throughout as the police struggle for a lead and even the rich have their own self-created problems. It's not all dour though, a series of light-hearted interludes are introduced by a litter of baby hedgehogs (hoglets) who are rescued by Kay’s husband. These short scenes adding sights, sounds, smells and a little mirth to the story.

O-M-G! What a thrilling, baffling case for Detective Kay Hunter and her team.
This case didn’t seem like it would be solved. While Kay and her team left no stone unturned, working for pizza when no overtime was available, it seemed as they were not getting any closer to the killer.
Kay’s partner is always good for bringing home animals in his care and this time it was hedge hogs. Apparently, they are smelly - LOL.
One thing I’ve always enjoyed about these books is how the team works together. The cruz of the story is the murder and Kay as lead, guides the resolution, not always the one who solves it, at least not alone but enables and accepts input from even the most junior member of the team. They combine all of their experiences to reach a conclusion. The team is nurtured to become dynamic and creative problem-solving detectives.
This was needed especially for this case. While there seemed to be a pattern and a motive, connections were challenging. When it is solved, I was again in an OMG state as the culprit was interviewed. I hope to never come across a person like that in real life, the writing was “that” real for me.
While the book could be read standalone and there were a few references to the previous case that weren’t really discussed until much later. Also, some of the backstory of the characters was lost. It has been awhile since I read book 12 and was trying to remember the references. It didn’t detract from the story, was just a niggling thing for me.
I am looking forward to book 14 (please say there will be one) but in the meantime, I may have a reread of book 12.

My review on A Deadly Promise by Rachel Amplett
I found I got into this crime drama straight away and found it quite enjoyable even though it did have a dead body with horrific injuries. DI Kay Hunter reckoned it was the worst of her career so far and it was fairly bloody at the scene. The second body bears similar marks to the first body but he was killed first as he had been dead longer according to the pathologist. The writing style was easy so it made for easy reading and the storytelling was really good which I enjoyed reading, there was a lot of detail, it was a well thought out story. It was well plotted and some research had been put into it as well which showed in the telling of the story. I really enjoyed this story and will look at reading more of this series. This was book thirteen and can be read as a standalone. It’s the first time I have read this author and I like how she writes. I will read her work again.

When I requested this I was not aware it this was a series. I was looking for a good audiobook and the description seemed like it would work for me.
It follows Detective Kay Hunter who is working on a new case and not something from a previous story so I was pleased it wouldn’t be necessary to stop and read some of the earlier stories.
Story starts with a couple staying at a house that is usually rented for extended periods; however they are renting it for one night and are pleased with how large and comfortable it is. They are told it was cleaned from top to bottom however if anything was missed the cleaner could be there quickly. They notice a smell and go to investigate and find a woman dead in the master bedroom. She has been brutal killed. It appears that masked intruders entered the home while the cleaner was still there. She was cut many times before she died.
While Detective Hunter is investigating this murder there are two other attacks, The victims seem to have no connection - Kay and her team are trying to find a motive.
Story was disturbing crimes also well as unlikeable nasty language characters.
Story did have me curious so I continued.
Whodunit was a surprise.

A couple renting a luxury house for the night on the way home from their holiday discover a woman’s body in a bedroom. Katrina Hovat, the cleaner, has been brutally tortured, strangled and her throat slashed. The post mortem shows other horrific injuries but there’s far worse to come from the digital forensics team. DI Kay Hunter from Maidstone police station in Kent and her team, including DS Ian Barnes, and DCs Gavin Piper and Laura Hanway, have no leads for the murder or her killer, except that the victim appeared to be overworked and underpaid. Then a brother and sister clearing their late father’s storage lock-up are shocked to find a man’s body hidden in an old wardrobe, dead for some weeks and having the same torture marks and murder method as Katrina. Still Kay and her team can find no connection between the victims and no motive or good suspects – could they simply be random victims of a brutal crime? How many more murders will there be before they solve this baffling and bizarre case?
I really enjoyed this story which works perfectly well as a stand-alone. The pace is well set with a nicely laid out plot, and features a great team of very likeable officers who all work well together as they doggedly piece together the clues. There’s not so much in the way of twists and surprises in this story as the detectives find themselves with very little by way of suspects or ideas, so the suspense lies in waiting to see if they can catch a break and make sense of the crimes. It’s a great addition to a good solid police procedural series which I can highly recommend. 4.5*

This is the second Amphlett book that I've read now and having loved the previous read (Cover The Bones), I knew that I was going to get a great read again.
This is, however, the first book that I've read in the Detective Kay Hunter series - there are currently 12 other books in this series so I already know that there will be a huge amount of missing character development - but once again, this worked fine as a standalone read as the author weaves any previous links into the current storyline well, so that it doesn't feel as though you're completely lost!
I must learn though....this does make me want to go and catch up with the previous 12 books!!
This case was an intriguing one which grabbed you in from the start. When a woman's mutilated body is found in a remote property, Kay struggles to find any clues as to the reason or how the killer got away - when another body turns up, with no apparent connection, Kay knows she has to solve the two cases or find a connection before more bodies pile up.
This was a standard formula crime thriller - but this is not a bad thing by any means.
I loved how the investigation played out and didn't see some of the twists coming. All which made this another enjoyable read.
I think with this type of novel, the key is to immerse yourself in the life of the Detective (and their team), build up that rapport and to follow through the cases one by one.
I certainly liked Kay as a main character and could definitely see myself following the series throughout.
I loved Adam, who is Kay's partner. Being a vet means that he sometimes brings his work home with him and these little cuties brought some lightness and humour to the seriousness of the investigations.
A really enjoyable read - and I'm surely going to have to add the other books in this series to my wishlist for the future.

'A Deadly Promise' is a fun, fast-paced crime thriller. There's a high degree of urgency and a less-than-common villain type - evil comes in all sorts of packages!
This is #13 in the series, but it's the first one I've read and works very well as a standalone - I got enough insight into Detective Kay to connect to her, even without having followed her earlier adventures. Those are the best! I'll likely go back and read her earlier adventures, since I had such good time with this one.
Premise - Debt is deadly, and Detective Kay has to find out who/why/how to stop the killing spree.

I was unaware this was a series, but it was still manageable to read it as a standalone. The only downside to this was that I sometimes had a hard time keeping track of the side characters and would probably be able to connect better to them and what’s going on in their lives outside of the investigation if I had read other books in the series. Nevertheless, the many side characters did a great job of painting a picture of a real police precinct.
I listened to this as an audiobook and Alison Campbell did a phenomenal job with her narration. The tone was set exactly right between matter-of-fact police work, suspenseful theorizing and also the everyday life and struggles of a detective. The story was easy to follow, and I could picture everything very clearly, like watching a TV show.
I got a bit worried that the resolution of the case might be far-fetched when the reader learned that the main connection between the victims was their debts. Because, as the detectives on the case also pointed out, it does not generally make sense to kill people who owe you money. As it turned out, the loose ends could be tied up after all and the explanation of why everything happened the way it happened carried more suspense for me than who did it.
The tone of the entire book is lighthearted (for a crime investigation) and fast-paced, which is something that I like in crime and mystery books. The crimes are a bit gruesome but handled and resolved in such a manner that you won’t have nightmares about them. At the same time, this series is not exactly thought-provoking, but rather a fun, suspenseful read you could listen to while cooking or driving without thinking too much about it when you have to take a break from reading.
I would recommend this book (and probably the entire series) to anyone who is looking for a mystery book or police drama that reads like a TV show and does not go too deep.

The author did an awesome job of writing this book as a potential standalone, even though it is actually number 13 in the series. It made me want to read all of the 12 books that came before it, while also not having any confusion with characters, storyline or background if just reading this one. It was a great mystery novel with similar vibes to all of the clever detective shows I love. The “villain” is scary, but I do think a better motive was needed for how gruesome the deaths were.

I did not know this was part of a series, but I think this was able to be read as a stand alone. I read books 1-12 to prepare for this ARC and I am so glad that I did! I absolutely LOVE this series! I adore the relationship Kay has with her husband and their love of animals. I also love that she is such a good leader and a strong woman w/out being a total mess and pigeonholed into being a bitch b/c she's in charge. I can not wait for the next book to come out but in the meantime, I'm adding all of Rachel Amphlett's book to my TBR!

Brilliant book as usual.
A book that you will not be able to stop reading. Full of twists and turns so you don't know who the perpetrators are until the end.
I have read all the books in this series and more besides.
Rather help is a brilliant writer a different would recommend her books to anyone who enjoys thrillers and mysteries.

Fabulous
Loved a deadly promise , love all kay,s team, been following since the beginning and it's so good to see them all go forward in their jobs. Each one plays a great part .. This one was grisly at times but that only kept you turning the pages......5 * and a whole lot more.....

This was a wonderful police procedural for a series of very gruesome murders. Read as a standalone, I was taken with how well thought out this story was and how captivating it remained up until the very end. The narrator makes the story come alive and adds to the fabric of the story.
