Ruthless businessmen don’t marry regular girls like me.

James Black is the mogul of BLAQ Inc – a CEO not above coloring in the grey. I am a pediatrician who works with sparkles and magic to fix my patient’s ouchies and boo-boos. My life is quiet, my routine is simple. Never should my path have crossed with such a ruthless beast’s.

And then my father made a mistake. A tale as old as time, there’s only one thing to be done. The businessman needs a bride, and I won’t be the reason my father’s life ends prematurely. James Black makes me an offer I can’t refuse. He tells me I’m going to marry him. He tells me I can’t spend my own money. He tells me I have to live in his penthouse. It should be a dream, and maybe for other girls it would be. But I worked too hard to forge an independent life to let it all go.

So…

I have a few stipulations of my own. And I’ll fight for each and every one. I learn quickly that if I want to survive in his world, it will cost me more than my last name. Am I willing to sacrifice my body, my soul, and probably my heart?

I’m the bubbly, chaotic ray of sunshine who sees the lonely monster alone in his castle. But if I’m going to break through the shadows, I’ll have to embrace the dark.

Bartered Vows is the exhilarating first installment in the West Coast Underworld series. It’s a stand-alone darker billionaire arranged marriage romance, complete with a happily ever after and no cliffhangers. A morally grey romance, this book may not be suitable for everyone.

**This is not a fantasy or a paranormal, but if you believe in magic, you just might see it hard at work in the pages of this contemporary romance.

Part 1

3 💘🐶🤔⭐️s

Lia and James’ story was intriguing, suspenseful and steamy.
I liked their characters yet I wasn’t excited with their insta love.
I was astonished at how easily and quickly Lia ‘entered’ James’ dangerous world.

Lia’s therapy dog, Rosie, and James’ younger brother, Elliot, were wonderful additions to the story.

Overall there were aspects that should have been more exploited and developed and the ending was very rushed.

Jealousy, especially from misunderstandings, in an arranged marriage or marriage of convenience trope is ALWAYS going to hit.

MAIN CHARACTER NAMES AND AGES
Cordelia “Lia” Peterson (?) | James Black (33)

FEATURES
∘ forced/arranged marriage
∘ mafia-adjacent
∘ serious / sunshine
∘ plenty of “my wife” moments
∘ period play 🫣

REVIEW
This story captured my attention, and that’s the only thing I wish for when I start a book. The banter, the side characters, and the plot made for a quick and entertaining read.

I do wish the novel were a bit longer to expand on some of the subplots (e.g. Lia’s parents, James’s past, Joel, etc.) and provide a little bit more conclusion to the main plot and side characters. The development of the romance was really well done. I’m just greedy for MORE.

I was grateful to see some other characters introduced have a book in the series, but I was punching the air after I noticed that Char, Elliott, and Jules don’t have a book. Apparently, it takes only two words to break my heart: “final installment”.

OW/OM DRAMA none
CHEATING none
THIRD ACT BREAKUP no — there is a silly spat, but it’s cleared quickly
ENDING HEA — no epilogue; couple is settled and strong

POV dual / first person
SPICE LEVEL 4 / 5
RATING 4 / 5

3/5⭐️⭐️⭐️
2/5🌶️ (there were multiple smut scenes but they were nothing crazy and most were short)

This book had the potential to be really good but it fell flat for me in some instances. I liked that it was dual POV so we could see what both characters were thinking. I enjoyed the forced/arranged marriage and how the MMC was the epitome of “touch her and die”. I liked James’ character because clearly he had gone through a lot in his past but had a soft spot for his brother Elliott. I think Elliott was a great addition as he brought out a different side to James. I liked how James was trying to change for her and saw her in such a beautiful way. Even though his trauma got in the way sometimes he tried his best to learn and grow out of it. Our FMC Lia was a strong-willed character. I like how she fought James and wasn’t an automatic submissive. She fought for those she loves and what she believed in and wanted. I also liked how she wasn’t a fragile girl who always needed rescuing. She was calm and collected and very understanding to a degree.

Although I loved them as a couple, I felt like the love aspect was brought on quite quickly in the book. It definitely was not a slow burn, and I wish the author would’ve waited a little more for there to be more built-up tension and angst. I felt like everything went very quickly. There was immediate attraction but they barely knew each other to the point where they were already invested in each other.

One thing I did not care for was James calling Lia “little one” or “little wife” all the time. I was trying to figure out their ages, but I only knew he was 33 and about to turn 34. But no clue how old she is, but she must be somewhat close since she is a practicing pediatrician.

Elliott and Rosey were my favorite side characters. They brought a light energy to the book and no doubt always brought a smile to my face.

Now for the plot; not going to lie until a little over half the book I thought it was the secretary, Char, who was trying to kill Lia. Since when they had first met she was very protective of James, so I thought Char and him had been in a relationship. Turns out I was wrong. There was always something weird about Vivian but since she was present here and there I wrote her off.

I was also confused in some parts because James was not a part of the mob/mafia but had associations with them. But most of his businesses were clean until we found out about the underground fighting.

I also wish the author would’ve gone into a little more detail about James’ past so we could’ve understood him better. I also wish the resolution to the problems was dealt with differently. I thought it was a little rushed for all the havoc James and Lia went through. I also don’t understand how Lia’s mom never found out about her being married or how after they wed the parents weren’t mentioned again until the end. Also, the fact that the dad tried to kill James but it was brushed off so easily.

She did it again! 5 stars, no question! The plot, *chef kiss*! The writing: nearly flawless- Only 3 spelling/grammar notes in total (one of my lowest this year.) The romance: So so so spicy, but with so much character development, it doesn't feel right to call it smut! Sweet heat! No cringe!

Beauty and the Beast vibes for the plot, Hades and persephone vibes for the characters. He's misunderstood, and she's the only one to look past his beastly exterior. It's definitely giving more Hades than Mafia romance, and I am absolutely here for it! "Welcome to the underworld, b***h!"

Strong female lead, who is happy and capable to take charge in an emergency, but happily hands over the reins too. She's tall. She's curvy. She's a doctor who does not have time for your bulls**t!

MMC has the utmost respect for FMC's bodily agency and consent. "I might own her on paper, but her body was hers to give or withhold." This is how you make the forced marriage trope sexy! Writers, take note!!!

I devoured this book in less than 24 hours, 6 of which were a reluctant break for Thanksgiving Dinner. I just could not put it down! I even had my smutty kindle propped up while I was stirring my side dishes!

I received an Advanced Reader Copy free from the author, but my opinions are 100% true and my own. I assure you, I don't sugar-coat. If you want to fall in love with a scarred, ruthless, loving man who says things like “Hold onto me and c*m* on my c**k like the good girl I know you are," then you NEED this book.

There was some math not mathing, and some more back stories I needed at times but overallll I had an amazing time.

Lia (h) was such a well written woman with snark, plenty of heart and fire.

James (H) was nothing but a jealous scarred teddy bear for my gurl.

Anywhooooo…

Please note: The H and the secretary have never slept together + he never has any thoughts suggesting any physical attraction to her — THANK GOODNESS.

✦ARC reading✦This is my own opinion and thoughts regardless of ARC✦

I really like the plot for this story, sadly the characters were just not for me. I felt like the fmc was immature just for the sake of creating drama/miscommunication. The writing was not for me, it felt very wattpad. Some parts gave me secondhand cringe, I feel like with stronger writing those parts could easily be fixed.

While this book just wasn't for me, I did recommend it to a friend who is just getting into reading. I have to give the author a pat for handling the autism representation correctly. Not many people get it right, but Alexa Michaels did.

This was such a fun and entertaining read! I enjoyed it and finished this story in one afternoon. The plot is messy sometimes and there are some plot holes as well as unrealistic actions but the vibe was exactly what I was in the mood for. This is no masterpiece in literature but I liked the idea and characters.
Cordelia and James have great tension and their banter is funny. Both are stubborn and fight for their opinion. I liked the fact that she stood her ground against James and he accepted (and recognized) that. This is rather insta love and quick in romance. The book focuses nearly only on the relationship between Lia and James, there are few side characters (only James brother and a russian mobster) who play a role in this book. It was refreshing to read a story where the main couple get’s the most attention and I enjoyed it.
Overall a good morally grey romance and I will definitely continue reading.

So this book really came out of left field and completely took me by surprise. Both main characters were well developed and interesting and both of them were grown adults with life experience which was so refreshing. There was no inane back and forth which is typical in the types of books. There was good plot development good character development and most importantly good relationship development between the two main characters. I also loved the side characters that were introduced especially Constantine draco's which I really really hope gets his own book because I would absolutely love to see and learn more about him. And even better than all the things I mentioned above is that the smut was just as good. I'm absolutely going to check out more books by this author

Read the first 100 pages and then put it down due to the holidays. Once I picked it back up like 3 days ago I wasn’t able to put it down. I loved the MMC and I loved the relationship that built between the couple. Choosing to read this as a stand-alone and not continue the series because I loved the story but don’t care who the next book is about. Nothing against the author or book, just leaving it at this because it was great!

I received this book as part of an ARC, due to life circumstances I was not able to finish the book prior to release however I definitely want to give my honest review now that I have completed the book.

I really enjoyed reading this. The story was great and I really enjoyed the characters. My most favorite part was the love between siblings. The way one sibling cares and is willing to do everything and anything for the sibling he loves and cares for really was something that I felt made the story even better. Growing up learning that family is important and seeing an author put that in a book is definitely something that stands out to me. Also the story in general was great. I will definitely look for more from this author.

ARC READER

This is the first book I have read by this author and I must say I fully enjoyed it. I finished it in less than 24 hours. For me it was a short read but I feel like she did a wonderful job at painting the full picture.

James is a billionaire with a dark past and an even darker present. Lia is a bubbling pediatric doctor, who is willing to do what she has too to save her father. Neither James nor Lia knew what they were getting into with their marriage. But these two are on FIRE for each other.

James' brother has an undiagnosed, What I am assuming, spectrum disorder. The author handles it well. Making him out to be a bit odd but not incapable. I really enjoyed Elliot's character and his relationship with James and Lia.

The only thing I will say I found a bit odd. Lia was willing to marry James to save her father. But once they get married she almost never mentions her parents again until the end of the book.
Overall, Enjoyed this book. I will definitely read the next one.

Story ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A retelling of Beauty & The Beast is always the first book I will pick up on my TBR list. Although based very loosely on the tale, I still loved this story’s elements that were apparent.

Touch her and ☠️with an alphahole billionaire / grumpy sunshine / not a slow burn, with a HEA

The MMC and FMC have you on the edge of your seat from get-go. He is grumpy, she is a ray of sunshine, and their want and need for each other is on fire. The FMC breaks through so many barriers that the MMC tries to enforce, and it’s a tale as old as time.

One thing that I didn’t enjoy was that there were a lot of nicknames thrown around, and towards the end, it stopped. Oh, and my favourite one - little wife 🥵

✨️Review:
This had two very rich and likable main characters in our morally grey James and sunshine spitfire Lia. I especially loved the bits of action peppered in! Often I have come across mafia type romances that don't execute that aspect as well...and I'm a girl that loves tense action scenes, bullets flying, wound care etc. It makes the immediacy all the more real.

James is such a lovely shade of morally grey! We get to see him do dark deeds but it's all for a noble code. A bit more unique is how strong Lia is from the outset when she's arranged to marry him to clear a debt. There's a pretty immediate attraction and it works very well here with their bits of playfulness from the outset.

I also appreciated that amidst them getting to know one another, it was a nicely paced growing affection. And James' brother Elliot (who's on the spectrum) was just the absolute sweetest and loved all his interactions in the family.

Just a bit rushed in the final act (I would've liked the action a bit longer, suspense building) and there's a tiny side plot that felt unnecessary with an acquaintance of Lia's. The baddies were not a surprise per say but it made sense within the story and I just really enjoyed this couple overall and this world! Definitely want to read the other two in the series!

Marriage of convenience

TW: sh00ting, d3ath, bl00d

Lia or "cordelia" is sunshine in all the ways it counts. A compassionate pediatrician, a doting daughter and we can't forget how well she cares for rosey, a therapy dog.

Helping others is her way of life which gets her caught up with her father's suspect business. Is she really ready for marriage or willing to play house to save her family?

Her parents house give me Gilmore girls vibes with the firing maids and upscale food. Only talking about everyday topics or not talking at all.

James' brother Elliott wants him to start a family and do all the things a typical family would do : get married, go on vacation, weekly dinners, fun outings, children, and all the holiday traditions.

He's not willing to get married until his business associate fucks him over. He's willing to barter to appease his brothers wishes or is he ready for a family he never truly got?

He's the typical I have no feelings, alpha hole until he meets Lia. She snaps him out of that real quick, because she's not taking this bartering laying down. Lia gives it right back to him and then some.
She's confident when it matters and vulnerable she needs to be. James reminds her that it's okay to be taken care of, to rest and be your true self no matter who you're with. Love is simple, a meal shared together, holding hands, caring for someone when they need it.

Don't get me wrong this book is sweet, but God damn the spice in here is top tier. I would definitely rate this a one handed read at certain points.

I fall in love/lust when the MMC says "mine", "my wife", I can't take it anymore".

this is a duo POV book of two characters with a well-balanced dynamic. you have a FMC who is forced into a marriage to save her father's life and a dark & mysterious wealthy MMC who is more than he seems. lots of books with this trope usually has the FMC seem like a damsel in distress or an dangling accessory to the MMC's world, but Cordelia (or Lia) matches James' energy in her own way. she carries her own and it surprises & intrigues him.

"Who are you, James?"
"I'm a lost soul, love."

this has ALLLLL the "touch MY WIFE and d*e" vibes.. and James emanates that in so many ways. even with his businesses and lifestyle, he makes sure she is prioritized and stands as his equal.

i have to say... James' background story is devastating and i see why he confidently stands so tall. he literally fought his way to the top. his relationship to his brother, Elliot, is so endearingly beautiful. Elliot is mentioned to possibly be on the Autism spectrum, and James has always taken care of him.. especially when Elliot's heartless b*%ch of a wife came into the picture.

"You weep for me? A monster who's done heinous deeds to claw his way from the depths of hell and build an empire?" he murmured.
"I weep for the one I couldn't help."
"You've helped me more than you could know, Lia. I've been free for years, but I've been existing as a corpse. You make me want to live again."

*cue tears*

yes, how James and Lia came to be is under unfavorable circumstances... but i love their story. i don't know what i expected when i first dived into this book, but i didn't expect to love it so much. i've recommended it to so many people just so i could have someone to talk about it with. haha!

This is my second book that I have read from this author. And like before she did not disappoint. In fact I loved this book more than her other book that I read.

- Dark romance
- Billionaire
- Arranged marriage
- Grumpy/sunshine

Lia is a peppy and cherry woman who is a pediatric doctor. Her parents are wealthy and she grew up wealthy. You cannot tell it because she has such a good heart. James has not had the best life growing up. He and his brother Elliot had a very hard life. James worked hard, and did many illegal thing and still does, to give he and Elliot a better life as adults. Even though, Elliot’s wife is the most disgusting person you will ever meet, and Elliot is the sweetest.

Lia’s father has made some bad money deals with James. And James has given him only two choices. One he must be killed. The other is, to save his life, Lia will marry him. Her father brings this up to her and because she is as sweet as she is, she agrees.

It happens right away. But you learn throughout the book that Lia is tougher than you thought and that James is softer than you thought. So it makes them surprise each other so much that feelings are easily developed.

Even the side characters are intriguing. Elliot is my favorite side character. He’s so perky and lovable. I love how she brings in mental illness with him. I would love another book that would focus on him, but I wouldn’t be upset if it focuses on Lia and James. I just loved them so much. They were adorable with each other. “Little wife”. Make sure you add this to your TBR right away!

I received this book as an ARC. My review was my honest opinion and was not influenced in anyway.

I really enjoyed reading this book! Bartered Vows had a mixed vibe of Beauty and the Beast and Hades x Persephone. The plot was developed very well and the characters were super likable. Lia, the FMC, is strong-willed and independent and does not act like a damsel in distress when she is forced into a marriage. James was very “touch my wife and d*e” through the whole book. His history was devastating and helps the reader understand why he is the way that he is.

Lia would match James’ energy from start to finish. She could hold her own and she knew her own strength and wit. I loved the development between their romance, it didn’t feel too slow or too rushed. I loved Lia’s therapy dog, Rosie, and James’ younger brother, Elliot. They added to the book in so many great ways. Elliot was a sweetheart and all he wanted was something he couldn't have in his past, a family that does family-like things.

“… I also want to see you settled. We should be having proper family dinners – at least once a week. They should probably involve some barbeque grilling, even though I loathe cooking outside; it’s so unpredictable. And! – we should go to church together. And go to the park for picnics with a dog that chases a ball. Rent cabins at the lake or cottages at the sea. Take trips to Europe or Asia. Not to mention have a big, old-fashioned Christmas that lasts twelve days." - Elliot

Elliot knew that his brother went through so much to get where he is and felt that James needed to settle and be cared for instead of always being the caregiver. He just wanted what was best for his brother.

Dedication: To all those who fall for a villain, just remember, darling, monsters deserve love too.

Lia Peterson is a pediatrician who lives a quiet life. She is independent and loves her job. When her father makes a terrible mistake she agrees to bail him out…by marrying James Black.

James Black, CEO BLAQ Inc is a ruthless businessman. He has no need for a wife…until his brother reminds him of a promise that he made as a kid. He approaches the marriage like a business deal but is surprised to learn his bride has some demands of her own.

As they get to know each other better, Lia starts to understand how ruthless James is what kind of life he lives. With someone targeting them, can James keep them safe? Can Lia live with so many shades of gray?

I really enjoyed this book. I definitely got Beauty and the Beast vibes from the story. I loved Lia and James together! Yes, he was intimidating and broody when they first met but she stood up to him and wasn’t going to change who she was. They had great chemistry and I loved their banter!! I loved their shopping trip together. They were constantly pushing each other and that leads to some very steamy scenes.

James clearly loved his brother so much, but I really liked the dynamic between Lia and Elliott. She truly became part of their family. The cooking scenes were very sweet. If you love morally grey characters, I definitely recommend this book!

I received an arc for my honest opinion

“I will walk over burning coals and cut down any man or woman who tries to hurt you,” he bit out

Lia(Cordelia): she is independent, loving, bubbly, a ray of sunshine, a pediatrician who loves her job and deeply cares for the well being of others.

James: he is the definition of powerful, intimidating and sexy. His past has left him scarred and thinking that love is not something he will come around to.

This forced/arranged marriage was hot and steamy and full of twists and turns. Lia was happy with her independence and her career, she worked hard for what she had. She is a ray of sunshine and full of love. When her father told her about his mistake and how she was the only one who could save him, she didn’t hesitate to do what was necessary. James took advantage of Petersons mistake to fulfill a promise he made to his brother years ago but what he wasn’t expecting was the fierce woman who just became his wife. She showed him that even a monster is worthy of love. From the beginning their chemistry is strong and they both give in to the passion that unfolds. This book was full of spice, betrayal, and love. I absolutely loved the main characters as well as the side characters, they are all so well written that I felt their emotions through the book. I definitely recommend this book! 😍

GREAT book

There is nothing bad I can say about this book at all. I have read alot of Mafia Romance novels (alot). But this at the top with my favourites. I had so many pages bookmarked because of the clever writing of Alexa.

We meet a wide range of key characters but they are described and introduced in a way that you don't get confused with so many characters and only a shorter book.

Firstly, there is Lia a weird and wacky character that is curvy and completely imperfect but perfect in every way.

Then there is James, a very dark and very troubled man. But mostly a man that never knew he needed to be loved underneath all the scars and perfect appearance. Yes, he is hot and very sexy but the scars will eventually be revealed and Lia will love him more for it.

The addition of the very important role of the brother in why James does things and the way his life has turned out pulls at your heartstrings.

Alexa also very awesomely included that of Rosey. Which I am glad to see some show the world the importance of emotional support animals.

Aside from all that we have plenty of action and twists and turns. Plenty of steamy scenes but none are misplaced or missing detail.

This is a book I will read again and I will definitely read the next book. Hopefully we will get a HEA for Elliot with the chef Jules.

For those that are a bit more critical; yes there were some spelling issues but most of that was autocorrect. So I'm not fazed and neither should you.

✨ARC Review✨

This is the first book I have read from this author and it most certainly won’t be the last.

Yes this book has the typical forced/contract marriage but hey it’s mafia/billionaire romance and if you’ve been friends with me for awhile now on good reads you know it is a genre I will devour each and every time and this book was no different👀

This book follows James and Lia, and long story short Lia’s father screws up massively and it just so happens that James is looking for a wife and he will forgive her fathers debt if Lia is to marry him. Now, Lia will do absolutely anything for her father so of course she agrees, but unlike a typical FMC in a mafia book Lia enters this marriage guns blazing. She is not a woman who will back down from a challenge especially when it comes from her husband aka Mr. Black.

Both Lia and James have insane chemistry and the spice, yep you won’t be disappointed 🤌🏻. I mean I constantly swooned every time he called her “my little wife”😩

This book is very fast paced and full of action that will keep you turning the page, even when you say this is the last chapter for now.. but trust me you won’t be able to put it down.

Tropes:
- Arranged/Forced Marriage
- Forced Proximity
- Mafia/Billionaire Romance
- Touch her and die
- “My Wife”

Thank you to the author for providing this e-arc for my honest thoughts✨

This story could have been amazing if it didn’t all feel so rushed. Not counting the prologue the entire book seemed to have taken place over the course of a month. I mean really she was forced into a marriage and moved in with him in one evening then the next morning she’s happy to be there and wants to care for him and blah blah blah. The characters never actually had a fight. She never seemed to be upset about the entire situation for more than a singular moment. I did my best to overlook the crazy amount of plot holes. My favorite part of the entire book was the dynamic between the James and Elliott which is the only reason this book is getting 2 stars without it I would hate the book. I mean Christ James never even told her he loved her back. The book was so rushed she didn’t even have a wedding ring until the last few pages of the book and they got married in what the first two chapters? Also the fact that she had been caring for her dead best friend’s young son and when he died we got two sentences of her being upset about it? Be so for real. I could go on and on about the disappointments of this book. I’m not one to encourage anyone to rip off another persons work or creativity but I would love to read a book similar that was actually done well. I cannot for the life of me understand how many good reviews this book has.
