Captive to a vengeful King. Abandoned by her fated mate. Hunted by a monster from the past.

A continental summit is called in the face of a looming threat, and an opportunity is presented.
A way out.
A way to make things right.
A way to make them so much worse.

As every nation of the continent comes together, the past comes back to claim her, buried secrets are unearthed, and a choice is given. Maybe this isn’t the end of Dahlia’s story after all. Perhaps it’s just the beginning.

I love angst and betrayal in a book. The Male lead can do some pretty dark stuff to the Female lead and I can still be on board, but not if it isn’t handled well. Ryken showed absolutely no regret and was even cruel towards Dalhia after breaking the bond. She was unable to eat and was under physical and mental torture. The only moment he regretted his actions was when he realized that by doing so he gave Malachi a foot in. Disgusting.

Case in point, by the end of this book I like Malachi better than Ryken. He explains that his actions when they were young were because he was a child that had been given to much power too soon. Children can be cruel, fact of life. They haven’t developed enough empathy in life to understand the pain of others until they experience pain. Which he does for what is described as thousands of years. In one hand I can find excuses for Malachi all day. I look in my other hand for Ryken and it’s EMPTY.

I also felt a lot of whiplash with Dalhia’s character. She would vow revenge against Ryken many times. Then take him back the moment he showed her any affection. Would proclaim she wanted freedom. Then let other people put her wherever they wanted and just accepts her “happy life.”
Her “best friend” tried to kill her and she is more worried about herself being forgiven. Girl! These people in your life do not care about you! The only one who is trying to free you is the “Bad guy”

Ok rant over

Side note world building and some of the side characters were well done.

First off, I want to say that I hate leaving 3 Star reviews. And this one pains me the most. But I loved the first book so much and completely hyped it up to everyone, so I'm just going to be honest. The second book left me feeling irritated.

In the first book, we are told that Malachi is the bad guy. It's all pretty vague, but basically, he's killed a lot of people and is just overall "morally gray.""" But he was also her family and protected her.

But we have a bit of what I like to call the "Salvator Syndrom" (Yes Damon and Stephen). We are supposed to believe that Malachi is the "baddy-mc-badguy" but without being told why. Does he manipulate and lie to her? Yes. Does he stalk and eventually kidnap her? Yes. Is he obsessed with her? Yes. But. So. Does. Ryken. Whom we are supposed to love and be rooting for. Honestly, Malachi is the only one who seemed to be entirely on her side. Was it for selfish reasons? Probably. But even Ryken put everything else before her and abandoned her. But we must forgive him because fated mates and all. I literally think that if he weren't her fated mate, she would not be so forgiving 🙄.

The book ended on an epic cliffhanger, and I can't wait for the next one! I'm hoping that all this nonsense that happened will be explained. The storytelling and writing were still phenomenal despite the annoying character development. It's still a much better fantasy series than "Fourth Wing," in my opinion.

I received an ARC of this book for a honest review. I reread the first one and it was great to have the 2nd available with the cliff #1 ends with!

I really appreciated seeing multiple POVs in this book and love hearing things from Ryken’s perspective. A lot of different relationships develop and get expanded on, with new stories being hinted at as well. The book is intense and has a lot going on, but you won’t want to put it down! There plenty of character development as well along with many of the questions from 1&2 being answered.

I’m looking forward to the next book in this series!

Am I the only person that just was confused if we were going through a war or not? Why is the north emesis? Just so welcome to why will it be like crazy high tension and then they’re sipping tea the next moment???? I don’t know I am so so so confused I like the first book, but man the second book feels like just a real big mess. Idk so many holes, so many scenes where I’m like??? Why is everything so high tension w NOTHING happening or why ISNT THERE ACTION HAPPENING?!

EVEYTHING WAS HIGH ALERT W NOTHING ACTSULLY HAPPENING

I really wanted to like this book. I was really rooting for Dahlia's revenge, but this story makes absolutely no sense. The male lead fantasizes about punishing her and not allowing her to leave his kingdom once he has her. Every.Single.Person.Left.Her. To.Rot.in.A.Dungeon. Every person she helped saved, every person including her mate left her to starve to death. My girl has no viable options. None! But the author would have you believe the male lead is the obvious answer. When i tell you, he is the most sadistic and uncaring out of all her options,i mean that. He mimics emotions really well, but he only really has two real emotions being horny or really angry. He is very manipulative, narcissistic, and misogynistic as f*ck! I was only reading for her to actually get her revenge, which she doesn't. She does however, get thoroughly railed by him throughout the book (the spice was mid) mainly in her new prison, her room I could not understand why Dahlia cared for all of these people after everything that transpired. Like none of them did the bare minimum, check to see if you were alive. I mean you were down there for three months. Honestly after everything I was like i don't care what happens to you or anyone in this story. Normally i don't read too deeply into toxic romance genre, but I'm so tired of every female character with almost zero agency and if they have even the tiniest amount of agency it revolves around the toxic male lead, that treats them like sh*t from beginning to end. I'm like let the girls have some fun too, though.

This book didn’t turn out the way I wanted which was disappointing, but I appreciated the fact I never knew what was going to happen. Characters, world and plot are well developed.

I just couldn’t continue after he rejected the bond. The shit that Dahlia goes through in this book is just not my cup of tea. On top of that, all the characters are terrible- I don’t know if that’s the point, but I’m over it. Give me SOMEONE to root for, or just like a little..

I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.

Wooooow! This book is intense! It picks up right where the first left off and doesn't stop. I reread the first book just to make sure I remembered everything, and the first book has some slow sections while the world and characters are being established. Without that need, this book just keeps going! I wasn't expecting to stay up until 3 in the morning reading it, before finally having to put it down because of work in the morning. If I hadn't had to try being responsible, I would've stayed up all night to finish it. I am so invested in Dahlia and Ryken's story. There is so much going on in this book between them, holy hell. I loved that we got so much more of Ryken's POV. It was necessary for this book, and really upped the angst level, which is something I'm always looking for. I love a good yearn. At one point I got so mad at them for both being so stubborn and secretive! PLUS! We get a few chapters with Malachi, which was really interesting! I was not expecting that at all and it really added to the ominousness of his character.

That. Ending. I did not see so much of it coming!! It's unexpected and heartbreaking and leaves the reader begging Tollem to please hurry and write the next book because I don't know how I'm going to wait! It's going to be so hard!

I find it's rare that I like the second book of a series better, as they are usually used to set up the third book. I should say that I am unsure if this is series is a trilogy or longer. Either way, I enjoyed this one more than the first and if you cared about Dahlia and Ryken by the end of the first book, you'll love them by the end of this one.

I’m so disappointed by this latest entry in the series.

I loved the first one, it held such promise. But, Dahlia becomes a puppet with no agency in this book. She’s abandoned by her friends but, oh never mind it’s ok. There’s loyalty to your friend and there’s blind stupidity.

She vows revenge multiple times, just to then seemingly change her mind for no real reason? I couldn’t follow the plot at multiple points. It just made me frustrated.

She wants to reject her mate for the rest of eternity, but upon learning that he broke her trust, manipulated her in her dreams, she’s like, oh let’s have a romantic dinner ONE TIME, have ( very mid) sex and get married? What the actual fuck?

Her mate is just as bad as Aiden, Dahlia actually tells him so, but there is actually no growth there, the opposite happens. And I’m all for touch her and die, but this is not that.

And, little lordling king, Aiden, or whatever, she keeps saying she wants to kill him, but meh, it’s ok Ryken, kill him after I told him “ he was mine” to kill.

Also, wtf is up with Redmond in this book?

I swear, if Ryken is end game I will riot.

3 stars for Malachi and the weird red eye scary fae.

Literally read in one day as I just needed to know what happens! It does end with a cliff so watch out! These are dark times for our MFC and she still has not learned her lesson. All the men are still super dicks but hey it’s a dark fantasy book soooo sometimes they’re just not that apologetic 🤷🏻‍♀️ I was super upset with how Dahlia’s arch with her best friend was playing out so I’ll be interested to see what happens with them. Hoping we get more answers with book 3 and there’s no much still left on the table and characters still need to be given more weight but I still couldn’t put it down! I need to know!

I literally didn't sleep just so I could finish this book. I LOVED it. The first book I left me concerned about if I'd like this one and now if I could give this book more stars I would. The steam was great, minus that part in the hallway -- if you know, you know. This book just knew how to rope you in and get you but then leave you crying by the end of the chapter (I'm totally calling out chapter 17. It's been a while since a story made me cry and I shed some tears over that. Like getting an entire bucket of iced water dumped on you and having your heart stomped on in the process.)
I really enjoyed seeing these characters grow and it was nice seeing R finally get his act together a bit. I mean, it sucks he went back on a promise almost immediately, but if she chose him she knew what she signed on for. I'm just saying, if she didn't want to be treated like she knew she would then she'd not have gone through with any of it.
I don't often find I like the second book of a series more than the first, like......ever. I am pleasantly surprised and now exhausted due to the lack of sleep previously mentioned lol I can't wait for book 3 and this one just released!! GAAAHHH! What to do now, huh?

I am writing this review after just finishing the book. I don't know if I will read the 3rd book or not. It was very difficult to like any of the MMC's.
Ryken in the 1st book left her after biting her and claiming her as his mate. Dalhia was left in a dungeon alone, then he came back and she forgave him. Pretty quickly actually. Then she claimed him, and he rejected the mating bond. Malachi who I did not like in the 1st book. I found myself liking even more than Ryken. He although has manipulated her in the past at least tried to be nice and give her freewill. Then Ryken took that away and took her to the fae lands. He also tried to claim her again without her acceptance. She did get some backbone and said she would no longer speak with him. He started to visit her in her dreams and pretend it wasn't the real him, she found out he was manipulating her again, and then just forgave him. I like my MFC's to be strong and have some backbone. She does not. In the end I still like Malachi better than Ryken, but I know it will end up being Ryken she is with. Who in my opinion is worse than Malachi.

I honestly don't know why I hate myself to the point of continuing this series after the first book.

- Almost every character acts like a teenager, even though most of them are 20+, and I honestly believe this is the book with the most eye-rolling I've ever read (people rolled their eyes 18(!!!) times in this, which in turn made me do the same).
- Although this is a 1st POV book, the characters sometimes described other people's feelings, like??
- The purple prose had me gagging lol
- Too little show, too much tell.
- Characters are flat, we don't get to know them deeply.
-Dahlia
- All romantic interests are toxic, and don't expect me to believe that

Amazing how everything I'd thought would improve in this sequel only got worse with each page I read, not to mention the numerous spelling mistakes and switched words a good editor could have fixed.
There is room for improvement, and I really hope it gets better, but I just don't know if I'll be brave enough to finish this series.

Devoured this book because I was so excited but I was left disappointed. I just don’t like Ryken and he didn’t grovel nearly enough. In my opinion he’s just as manipulative and bad as Malachi, going into her dreams to manipulate her and using the bond as a weapon. In saying that, I really wanted Dahlia to end up with Malachi, he was just written better and had more depth.

I can see that it’s set up for her to end up with Ryken so I probably won’t continue onto the third book because I found myself rolling my eyes every time the fmc forgave Ryken or started kissing him even though he did nothing to deserve her affections or forgiveness. It’s obvious who’s supposed to be the good guy and the bad guy but it’s frustrating when the “bad” guy is being made out to be horrible even though his actions are no worse than the “good” guy.

I enjoyed the world and would love to see Gabriella’s romance play out. The author did a good job of giving the side characters personality.

I received an advanced copy of book #2 and let me tell you after the cliff hanger from book #1 I was sooooo thrilled to get a chance at figuring out what happens next with Dahlia.

***potential spoilers ***

Book 2 picks off where Dahlia is locked in the dungeon and we get our first long awaited encounter of her villain and childhood friend Malachi. I won’t dive into all the details but I will tell you that you MUST read this book and you will devour it like it did in 1 DAY! This book had me up and down..anxious to figure out what was coming next. War is coming and everyone is trying to negotiate to prevent or prepare. I could not put the book down and I can’t wait for book #3. Again it ends on another great cliff hanger!

The writing improved a bit. However, I’m so BORED of Dahlia worrying about and searching for forgiveness. She was the most interesting after she had been in a dungeon for 3 months, completely broken, depressed, and was finally not interested in forgiveness from others. It seemed like that was the only moment of clarity when she realized all her friends and found family were spineless, brainless, lumps on a log.

I so would have wished she had a villain arc and became Malachi’s queen. At least it would have been a little interesting. Will I read the third book? Probably.

wrong red flags

Had hopes of the bad boy getting the girl, but in the end the moody and inconsiderate male is the fated mate
Started out great, but too many red flags (and not the fun dark kind) with the main MC. Especially with the bond breaking and his immaturity. Malachi unfortunately is much more intriguing to me and I find myself wanting them to get together.. I know I’ll be disappointed in the end but will probably still finish next book. Altogether the whole fated mates vibe does not feel natural as it is supposed to be.

Completely hooked on this series, the world building and characters. Dahlia struggles with all the questions of her ancestry and Magic, while Ryken struggles with control and his love for Dahlia. The back and forth between them gets a little old after a while, as it is definitely slow burn.

The big reveal of Ryken’s ancestry is going to make the next book for sure, along with the reveals of Dahlia’s. These are going to be key to defeating Malachi.

Just WOW! What the heck did I just read! This was fantastic, as I expected! This book was so intense! So many parts I was holding my breath! And, of course, more secrets and more lies and a couple of jaw dropping surprises! Loved every second of this book!
Thank you for the opportunity, once again, to live inside your world for a bit!

Thank you for allowing me to read book 2 via an ARC! 🩷🩷

Ryken is sus 👀 I half respect him and half hate him because WHAT?!? I think he has much darker intentions but I can’t figure out *why* exactly. Excellent second book to the series. Dahlia held her own as best as she could and proved herself. Aiden can still go fall off the face of the earth for all I care lol

First of all I would like to thank Mellie T. Tollem for the ARC. Now this book had me from
beginning to end. I could not put this down it literally had me in a chokehold. The only sad part was that it ended and the ending let’s just say I can’t wait for book 3.

I just love it when a series gets even better with a new book. As much as I loved the first book, I loved this one even more. The amazing plot with many twists, the steamy romance & emotional dilemmas.

Thanks for the ARC!

Morally gray characters are often very compelling and interesting to me. Completely stupid and pointlessly rejecting one’s mate, for no fking reason other than dragging out the plot, is unforgivable. I hope the MMC dies and I’m ambivalent about the fate of the FMC
