A fast-talking front man, an Eastern-educated Comanche Indian, and a grizzled Western witch doctor join forces once again in this authentic western tale by the award-winning author
Fred Grove (born Frederick Herridge (July 4, 1913 – September 2008) was a Native American author and winner of five prestigious "Spur Awards" from Western Writers of America for his western novels.
This is the fourth (or fifth?) book in the Judge Blair series. It really is best to have read at least The Great Horse Race and Bush Track in order to have a clue as to what's going on. This is a very quirky series about the early days of bush track racing out West. At times very funny but also at times deliver some practical advice like not meeting an armed masked man alone. I hope Fred Grove's books get republished sometime soon. If you love Westerns or horses and see this series at your library or at a used book sale, pick it up.
This is not your typical cowboy western. Dude McQuinn has a horse named Judge Blair and travels through Texas running him in match races. But after one race, his horse disappears and the mystery breaks from the starting gate. With fast action, fun characters, and good portrayals of the horses, this is a very satisfying read right down to the final tense moments in the homestretch of the last chapter.
