I read this book less as inspiration and more as a case study in transformation done for real.
Nido Qubein hasn’t just talked about change — he’s executed it. High Point University’s rise from a struggling regional college to the #1 university in the South didn’t happen by accident, and it didn’t happen through incrementalism. It happened because Qubein understood something many leaders miss: transformation is experiential, not rhetorical.

What I appreciate about this book is its unapologetic stance. Qubein is not embarrassed by ambition, excellence, or differentiation. He understands that institutions don’t become remarkable by consensus, and that culture doesn’t change unless leadership is willing to declare what matters and then design around it.

This book resonated with me especially because it aligns so closely with what Joe Pine has been articulating for years — and what he’s developing more fully in his forthcoming book, The Transformation Economy. High Point University isn’t just educating students; it’s deliberately shaping who they become. That’s the move from service to experience to transformation — and it’s rare to see it executed so visibly and at scale.

Transformation is never frictionless, and that tension is often where the deepest lessons live, and there was definitely tension in growing and transforming this university.

This is a worthwhile read — especially for leaders who are serious about leaving something better than they found it. Not just bigger. Not just more efficient. Better, more meaningful, and impactful in people's lives.

Here are four Axioms from Extraordinary Transformation

1. Transformation Is Designed, Not Delivered
Experiences can be staged, services can be delivered, but transformations must be intentionally designed around who the customer becomes. Qubein didn’t “improve” High Point University — he redesigned it around outcomes of being: confidence, character, leadership, purpose. That is the defining move of the Transformation Economy. People don’t pay for what you do; they pay for who they become.

2. Institutions Change Only When Leaders Declare a New Identity. Transformation does not begin with strategy — it begins with a declaration. High Point’s turnaround didn’t start with benchmarking or committees; it started when leadership declared, unapologetically, what kind of institution this would now be. Everything else followed. Incremental change optimizes the past. Transformation abandons it.

3. Differentiation Is the Moral Obligation of Transformative Enterprises
In the Transformation Economy, sameness is failure. Qubein understood that being “one more respectable college” would doom High Point. Transformation requires distinctiveness, because identity cannot form in generic environments. You cannot transform people in places designed to offend no one.

4. Measurement Must Follow Meaning, Not Replace It
Traditional metrics can validate transformation, but they cannot define it. High Point measures placement, enrollment, and outcomes — but those numbers are downstream of meaning, culture, and intent. When measurement becomes the goal, transformation collapses into compliance.
What matters most in a transformation is often what cannot be measured first.

I first read this book as we were visiting HPU with an eye to my twins attending. During the visit it was abundantly obvious that Nido was doing thing right.... A lot of things right, and I wanted to know more.
I found the story behind the transformation Nido has brought about to be both extremely inspiring and very informative. At a time when other institutions have been struggling, Nido has proven that a college needs to be run with care, compassion, familial involvement and bottom line, like a business.
Nido Qubein did not need to take the position leading HPU. He had already had a very successful life in the business world. But he wanted to give back, and give back he did in so many powerful and inspirational ways, affecting the lives of tens of thousands of students and creating a community that goes far beyond the campus.
This is not just a book for those with connections to HPU, it is a book for anyone looking for a solidly inspirational story of success written in a manner that is easy to comprehend and absorb.

As a parent of a current HPU student, Extraordinary Transformation made me feel like I was looking into Nido Qubein's personal journal during the past 20 years. The stories told in Extraordinary Transformation felt personal from Dr. Qubein. To see how High Point University has transformed in a small North Carolina through a campus of actionist and the art of the possible, makes this read even more special! It left me more full of gratitude for those who have walked this journey ahead of my family, and hopeful for those that walk after my familes time at HPU. If you are a student, alumni, parent or family member that has been part of the HPU journey, this is a must read!

Nido Qubein does it again! Extraordinary Transformation is an incredible look at how this once small college transformed itself into a successful, growing and high-demand institution led by the brilliant Dr Qubein. As an HPU veteran parent, I've witnessed first hand the way he leads his staff and students. This book gives fantastic tips and advice that anyone in a leadership role would benefit from. Learn from someone who continues to do the "right things" right, and how he is able to engage many others along the way. You won't be disappointed!!!

Nido Qubein is a leader's leader. This fascinating and insightful book details the amazing transformation he led at High Point University. The context is higher education, but the lessons are universial. I am buying copies for my clients. I have known Nido Qubein for over 30 years and have been fortunate to witness his leadership at HPU and other places over that time. I can't think of a better book to read, study, and apply if you want your organization to move from success to significance.

Nido has been a guiding force for me since my son, Nick, decided to attend High Point University. Little did I know that I was about to be enrolled as well. Sitting in the audience for many parent sessions where he spoke remains indelible for me. It has been several years now since Nick graduated, but Nido continues to inspire through his commentary and now this book. So much has already been written about his wonderful life skills orientation; there is not much to add. Suffice it to say that what he says and does stands as a remarkable example of the exemplary life of an American immigrant. This is why I featured him in a section on immigrants in my latest book-- The Great American Disruption. We live in disrutive times. Through this writing, Nido reinforces the view that some disruptions can be transformative and move us in the right direction. Values matter. Never more so than in educating our youth. We should all be grateful that people like Nido Qubein have taken the time to share their insights with us and inspire us to ever-greater achievements than we might have considered possible.
