Pretty enjoyable, appreciated the laser focus on women characters and the fact that it is set in the Visayas rather than Manila! I loved the visual design of the teacher's house.
An insight into Philippine folklores with a female perspective a female led comic book dives into the ex-pat asian experience with the main character returning to the Philippines strugling with mental problems.
These problems may have supernatural origins and there are fantasy elements taking from the forementioned Philippine folklore.
This is a good start for people interested in the Philippine culture if you want a female slant.
The Mask of Haliya is a stunning exploration of Filipino mythology, created, illustrated, and published by an incredibly talented team of Filipino women. Heir to the Warrior Moon collects the first eight issues into one powerful volume, weaving a rich tapestry of legend, identity, and destiny.
The storytelling is as compelling as the artwork—bold, emotional, and beautifully rendered. Every page feels like a tribute to heritage and a celebration of cultural roots, all while delivering a gripping narrative that stands strong in the world of modern fantasy comics.
Winner of the Indie Author Showcase’s 2024 Graphic Novel of the Year, The Mask of Haliya is a must-read for fans of myth, magic, and meaningful representation.
For fans of Trese and The Mythology Class. I also appreciated that it focused on different parts of the Philippines that even I'm familiar with so I didn't understand what some of the words were.
The art is amazing and the plot is so interesting. This volume had a lot of background and set up for later volumes, but I am so excited for the next volume!
