Learn from one of the Church’s great mystics, Saint Frances of Rome. In this book, she narrates her visions to her spiritual director, Canon Giovanni Matteoni. He records her visions of the geography of hell and the state of limbo. She describes the punishments for various sins such as perverts, usurers, blasphemers, traitors, murderers, apostates, schismatics, incestuous people, witches and more. She also talks about the particular torments due to the seven deadly sins and the punishments for theft, dishonoring parents, breaking vows of chastity and selling daughters into prostitution.
In addition to these visions of hell, Saint Frances also shares her visions of purgatory and heaven. She talks about the condition of souls in purgatory and the glories of heaven and so much more. Her visions will provide you with rich meditations on the realities of the Four Last Things.
This book is very short, and easy to read. St Frances of Rome was a mystic and visionary during the early 1400's. As related to her confessor and spiritual guide, she related her visions of hell, purgatory, and heaven. I will say that the section about hell isn't for the faint of heart. After awhile, I skimmed through this section because the details were so graphic. I couldn't imagine wanting to go there. The only way St. Frances could withstand such terrifying sights was with the comforts of the Archangel Raphael who lead her from one realm to the next. In case you were wondering, hell has three sections to it with many "rooms" designed for each type of sin. The next was purgatory. Her description of purgatory was much softer although painful for those who were there. It too has three levels. There is a demon to the soul's left reminding them if their sins while at the same time their guardian angel would remind them of the good they had done. When their time was completed, the Blessed Mother would take the soul to heaven. The section about heaven was the shortest. St. Frances found it very hard to describe heaven. It sounded like the beauty I envision, but a million times better.

Incredibly interesting and clarifies about her vision being an interpretation of what the places actually are because the spiritual realm is not bound by physical/natural law. The vision seems to be what it is in all ways that matter as she was guided by thee angel Raphael. This vision from my understanding was an illustration to help our bound human minds understand the spiritual. Very graphic to help warn while supplying hope to the living reader and beautiful to keep us positively encouraged to strive, a great book for the good the bad the ugly and everyone in between.
In the introduction, Rev Fr Robert Nixon wrote - "These writings fall within the category of work that is described as private relevations".
This, in the introduction, resonates with us - "She was not concerned with explicating or expounding questions of doctrine and dogma, but rather of her own direct spiritual experience and insights afforded to her by the grace of God."
Thank you, God, for blessing St Frances with these experience and insights, the blessing of St Raphael to accompany her, the blessing of Canon Giovanni Matteotti, and Rev. Fr. Robert Nixon, O.S.B. who made it possible for us to learn from St Frances.

Hell is a very heavy topic and we'll never be able to understand or fully grasp the tortures that souls undergo and experience there. I am grateful that St. Frances' spiritual director recorded her visions of Hell, Purgatory and Heaven. I have to admit, this book was scary to read, especially the chapters about Hell. I had to put the book down multiple times as it was very unpleasant to read the punishments assigned to the souls.
