Just Out Of Reach is a coming of age novel. During the end of summer in the early 1960’s, the main character, Jake Johnson, faces various situations which cause him to examine the changes that life hands him. This novel explores themes of love, prejudice, deception and loss as viewed by a twelve year old young boy. Set in the suburbs and later on a farm just outside a small town, the main character tries to navigate the life of a child in a military family to living a week with his great aunt and great uncle on their farm. The novel features the flashes of humor, confusion, trust and sadness that are inherent in childhood.
Just Out of Reach by R Gerry Fabian is well-written and interesting. It follows the story of Jake Johnson, a twelve-year-old boy who is coming of age in the 1960s. This story is a coming-of-age tale in the truest sense. That time is rather tumultuous in history, but in this story, you get a glimpse into the more personal effects. Jake encounters and tackles a lot of issues from love to tragedy and everything in between. How he deals with adversity makes this story interesting and relatable. I found this to be a heartfelt tale, although at times the writing felt a little stilted. Nonetheless, it's an intriguing and satisfying read.
The first thing I saw, and the first time I've seen this in a novel like this, is that it is "Cyber Active,"...as in the author's use of internet resources to supplement the book at the start of the chapters. Transmedia projects are some of the coolest things to me, and I loved the integration of online media to provide a broader sense of the character and world they live in. That alone is incredibly reader-friendly and creative in the e-book industry.
Jake is a twelve-year-old boy coming to terms with all the complications life offers while visiting his aunt and uncle's farm. He's a character with a lot of depth for a 12-year-old and certainly a product of his time.
A neat concept for a coming-of-age book set in the past (incorporating technology to supplement the story)!

Narrative Perspective The story is told from a perspective that allows the reader to observe events from a distance. This objective approach helps in maintaining a neutral view of the unfolding situations. The narrator provides enough context to understand the setting without becoming overly emotional.
