She's been fighting her whole life, not only to keep it a secret, but also to survive. With a famous brother and a hidden past, it's hard to get close to anyone... but when her not-father, Tony, asks her to help coach the universities hockey team, she's forced into the spotlight.
He's poured his literal blood, sweat and tears into making it to the big leagues. He's got it good, minus a couple scars from his past, until a random girl shows up one day and brings him crashing back to reality... but everything should be fine right?
There is more to life than fame and money. Things get complicated, hearts get broken, and life gets flipped upside down for this unlikely friend-group.
I have so much to say about this book, and while I am going to go in-depth on my thoughts and feelings, there is one thing I want to get out of the way before I do. I know this was the author's debut, and I think they could learn a lot from reading reviews in the future. But the first thing they MUST, and I mean MUST, ABSOLUTELY, learn is to connect a sensitivity reader!
This book handles way too many sensitive and triggering topics that a simple trigger page of "mentioned" topics is simply not enough. They were not handled properly at all, and the character's reactions, processing, and conclusions are not only inaccurate but could be incredibly harmful to people who pick up this book out of the blue. I am fortunate that I don't have triggers and am able to go into books blind. But this book has the potential to be so harmful that it concerns me that more of a warning was not put out and that no one but the author edited this for sensitivity purposes.
If you are sensitive to the topics listed in ANYWAY. This book is not for you! I urge you to not pick this book up for your own health.
First things first, the topics on the trigger warning are not just mentioned. They are explained in great detail in almost every chapter of this book. And one of the warnings is simply incorrect which is incredibly misleading and simply wrong.
The trigger warning list clearly states that parental abuse happens "off-screen," which is not true. It is described numerous times in great detail throughout the book.
This book contains so many inaccuracies and harmful ideations surrounding the sensitive topics chosen that it deeply upset me as someone with a bachelor's and master's degree in psychology. These topics need to be researched and handled properly if they are going to be discussed. They are not plot devices, and this author needs to learn the difference before someone picks up this book and gets the wrong idea. I felt the need to finish this book in order to put out a correct warning and was progressively disturbed as the pages went on.
So much of these character's drama is so over the top and completely unnecessary. Not every character needs an earth-shattering, horrible thing to happen to them to make them lovable. And if someone needs to depend on trauma to make their characters likable and have people side with them - they are not well-rounded characters.
And that is not even mentioning the random side characters with no names who suffer trauma for some reason I cannot even tell you! A random boy is killed in a car accident, and we see his sister throughout the story, but nothing actually happens with her character. It was pointless trauma and it had no real place aside from adding more trauma onto a heavily traumatic story.
Now, onto the rest of the book.
To put it plainly, this book is written incredibly poorly. That is not to say the author is incapable of writing and cannot grow and learn from this. But from the jump, it was clear this book was not ready to be published and should not have been in the condition that it is in.
The letter from the author in the introduction of this story mentions that the book was edited by the author and that the book contains typos and plot holes. That is a sign the book was not ready to be published, and I am deeply upset that the author felt comfortable putting this on a paid platform knowing this. No book, self-published or not, should ever contain a warning that there are plot holes and typos. As an author it is your due diligence to go back and ensure that there are not. And if you cannot, then it is your job to outsource that to someone who can before you put something out to gain traction or monetary value. It felt gross to me.
I understand that this book was initially published on Wattpad, and I can tell. But it should not have been published with a wattpad structure. It is clear that this was written in chunks with no real sense of direction. This book is a collection of moments and scenes slapped together without any real thought of how they would be woven to create a coherent story. This is a published outline, but I would not have felt comfortable calling this a comprehensive story. And before anyone judges me for saying that, I feel the same way about After which is a very popular published wattpad story! I think wattpad stories are a great starting point, but that does not mean they are cohesive enough to publish as a completed story.
Another thing that killed me while reading this was just the lack of generic realism and the blatant lack of how the world works. It was clear that no real research went into this book from the structure of existing systems such as collegiate sports, medical care, laws and regulations, psychological impacts, or even human biology.
Let's start off with the hockey. One of the most random aspects of this story is that eventually she owns the hockey rink? Which would just simply never happen. First off, no one is handing a 21 year old girl a building. Secondly, if you're going to paint the university they are at as a big league hockey school that is pulling in these top recruits, NO ONE owns the rink; the university does. This bothers me, because with the smallest bit of research, it could have made sense. Rinks, fields, and arenas can be sponsored; they can be named after people who supply money to keep such a place running or to be built, but they are always owned by the university. No university is going to have their main money sport playing in a building owned by a child. Because that is what she is a child.
On top of that, the whole premise is that she is helping as an ASSISTANT COACH as a favor. And yet, everyone, including the coach, acts as if this little girl with no prior coaching experience who has never actually played the sport at any competitive level is the actual coach. I don't know how many people have interacted with collegiate coaches, but that would just never fly with any sport at any school. Even the NHL coach who comes in acts this way. NO, and I mean NO, professional hockey coach is trusting a 21-year-old college student to give them player recommendations. Regardless of the fact that that isn't even how scouting works. But to make it worse she then only recommends her friends. There are 20 other guys, and she doesn't name one, even to prove a point. That would be a HORRIBLE coach. And to have him say she trained them well. NO SHE DIDN'T! We see her give corrections once, and that is it. And that just disregards the actual coach who already had multiple players drafted before she even arrived to the school.
I don't even have it in me to discuss the romance in this book. It is toxic and horrible. In any real world scenario I would hope these two main characters would stay so far away from one another it is not even funny. This should not be an example of cute true love. I say that loosely since we never actually see them fall in love, just one chapter they are and were told to believe it for the next 40 chapters of trauma porn. But it really is polished so nicely when everyone in her life tears down her childhood home, WHICH COULD HAVE BEEN BEAUTIFUL! It could have been a great moment of self-growth and healing for the main character. And yet, everyone in her life does it without her. And that just shows how little they all know and actually care about her. They learned nothing and no one grew in this story.
20.12.2023 words can’t describe how much i love this book. It’s my roman empire it’s everything to me even if it made me cry nonstop throughout the whole book which i don’t appreciate. The epilogue was amazing but i got scared for a bit but the ending was fantastic regardless.I skipped school to read this and i fucking love it so damn much that i would do anything for the book. I ate this book up in 4 hours and I would do anything to be able to read it for the first time again. The author shows all the characters trauma on such a heartbreaking way that i couldn’t help but cry during it. I never got a break and the tears just kept on coming. I remember why i loved this book when it was on wattpad and I’m actually very happy that she changed the ending because i think i would be crying a lot more if Claire had forgotten about everyone. Saying this book is my favourite book is an understatement because it’s not just a book it’s engraved into my soul and i don’t think i’ll ever recover from it but that’s fine and i’ve accepted that. Baby’s breath are still my favourite flower and the reason i started loving them was because of when i read about them in the wattpad version and i love that you still included them in the published version. Having to read all the sad parts again especially when chris found Claire I thought i couldn’t do it and it was really putting me off reading the book but i’m glad i read it and i need the next book ASAP but i just don’t know who i want it to be about. Cause Miller is so fucking amazing and sweet but David has so much trauma that he just needs someone to be with him through it. In a way Davis Reminds me of joey lynch, he’d push everyone away but there’s one person who he can’t push away. But then I also want a novella for Tash and chris cause they were such amazing characters that i need there backstory since chris said that him and Lucas where the same i want to see just how same they really are. This book has a home in my heart and my mind it’s engraved everywhere in my body and i will cherish this book for the rest of my life.
27.01.2024 i’m very happy that i read it when it was on wattpad first and when once it was published. I honestly can’t wait for Sasha and davis’s book because i loved sasha the times she was featured in this book even though she’s an emotional mess atm but like i get where she’s coming from.

This book👏 Absolutely wonderful This story, friend group, this FMC!! The FMC… she’s everything this woman is sunshine after experiencing so many AWFUL THINGS. -rape -beat by her dad -used for her famous brother
The group of boys she lives with are truly good guys they make a few mistakes one that’s pretty big and bad but the guys do their best to make up to her and she’s such a forgiving FMC.
She is close with all the boys but in one scene she finds Davis in the rain on a bridge it was a emotional scene She has a special bond with all the guys it’s truly a amazing book
I really really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next in the series
Thanks for adding the letter at the end I loved it

if i had to choose only one book to read for the rest of my like it would be the things we deserve! if you want a book that’s going to make you feel every emotion possible this is the one!! oh my god i’ve never cried or laughed that hard at any book like i did reading the things we deserve
i loved seeing all the characters grow together and overcome the obstacles in their lives. it’s heartwarming reading about how much they all care and would do anything for eachother! if you want a book that’s got a rollercoaster of emotions for you and the characters you need to read!🥹
girl gets beating after beating without any of the events adding to the storyline.
hard to follow character introductions.
forced growth commentary. “because my pretty girl has grown” and then no actual growth is shown??
too many unrelated storylines. author admits to plot holes in her introduction. this should not have been published. books require no plot holes and no typos neither of which occurred.
I want to start this review with saying this is all my own opinions and you might enjoy this book alot more than I did. That being said, I really felt like I needed to say some things about this book in hopes it helps the author going forward. They have alot of potential, I can see where this book could have been a 4 star for me, but unfortunately the following things really put me off, and had me constantly putting the book down, trying to avoid reading further, which is VERY unlike me. (Im right now writing this instead of finishing the last 20 pages, which I will finish after I type this..)
Please hire a sensitivity writer & editor for your upcoming projects, Especially if your book deals with heavy topics like suicide, abuse etc. (Look on FIVVER if you are looking for something in your budget. I did a quick search and a sensitivity reader can start at $100 for a 100,000 word book, Well worth the investment).
TRIGGER WARNINGS: Attempted Suicides Abuse Abusive verbiage Underage drinking Rape Anxiety/Panic attacks Car accidents (Probably more that I am forgetting)
My first thought is that I feel like this book could have easily been 70+ pages shorter.. That being said... HUGE SPOILERS AHEAD
Having both the main characters being victims of abusive backgrounds, I think the author should have used much less abusive verbiage. For example, when the characters are playing videogames and the FMC notes that one of her roommates is looking at her "like he wants to punch her in the face"... this is not something someone who has been abused would ever think in a light hearted situation. Instead the author could have put something alot less aggressive that would have fit with the setting better.
Dont get me started on the scene when the FMC comes home after being abused by her father, bruises/cuts on her face, and the MMC/Love interest shoves her aside to go "beat up her brother" as he thought her brother was the abuser. This is a GREAT example of how less abusive verbiage could have been used. "Im going to kill him,' he shouts as he brushes past her, his blood boiling." Something like that. NO ONE would shove past a person that they know was just abused, much less someone they have romantic feelings towards...
At the 87% mark the FMC announces that she is quitting competing in figure skating because she no longer enjoys it. Not once was this mentioned in the book. Furthermore, a few chapters before that she tries on and picks up a custom dress ordered by her coaches. At this point the author could have put something in showing her doubt going forward? Or even much sooner after any of the practices the FMC goes to?
Another thing that never really made sense to me, through-out the entire book was her separating herself from her brothers fame. Her background states that she is in the public eye, often going to many public events with her family, putting her very much in the public eye. Those events would have been filmed/photographed. A quick google search of her famous NHL brother would have shown those images of events and since she is not batman, people could deduce that she is the figure skater with the same first name and different surname, since she has won competitions and I am sure those photos are also posted online.
To end this review, I really hope the author learns from this book and grows in their writing style. The only reason I did not DNF this book was because I wanted to give the author a fair shot since this is her first book.
Good luck on your future books. Do not let this review deter you from writing, but instead I hope it helps you learn and grow. ♥
At first I enjoyed this book - it was something light hearted and didn’t require much brain power. However, I dnfed at 58% due to this book providing unnecessary and traumatising details into severe abuse and assault, AND JUST BREEZES THROUGH IT. There was not an adequate warning at the beginning of the book, which meant that someone with mental health struggles (such as myself in addition to my own assault trauma) is blindly led, and on some level tricked, into reading something that can cause significant distress. Without these details, the book would have been pretty decent.
If you can tolerate these themes, then I would on some level recommend this, but please err on the side of caution.
Edit: I finished it … and I wish those icky chapters weren’t there because they ruined a decent book.

I really love this book. I first started reading it during the summer when it was released on wattpad but sadly I didn’t get to finish it. But I bought the paperback copy and omg it’s in my favorite books now, it has a good storyline, great character development, relatable topics, and is overall an AMAZING book. I finished it in a total of 5 days and I was happy but also a little sad to finish it. I would highly recommend reading it if you like romance books.
Okay so I normally hate the second chance trope but this was really well written! I think it’s because they weren’t technically lovers yet because the situation occurred, is why I liked it a lot
This was good but just missing something. This almost felt like a mix between wicked devil by Danielle Roman and consider me by becka Mack!
Also I lowkey wanted something bigger between Claire and Tristian when he showed up in the grocery store.

The book was good but a little boring tbh. I have read this book two times before on Wattpad and one time in actual book. And I thing it were better on Wattpad and why I think that is in the actual book all the small thing that happened are gone like them getting a cat, naming it and when she got letter for everyone and read them and ran to hug Lucas because of he’s letter. So I’m a little disappointed I wanted it to be like in wattpad
This was kinda a quick read for me. It’s about a girl who moves into a house with a group full of hockey boys, and she’s their new assistant coach. It has enemies to loves, ex figure skater and hockey boy, and lots of secrets at first. But my only problem was that Claire was wayyy too forgiving, especially to Lucas. I’m not gonna spoil it, but if you read it and know what part I’m talking about.
I adored this story! I am in love with all 5 of those boys and the family they all become. This book does need some proofreading though- lots of typos. Not a huge deal but just worth mentioning. I loved seeing Claire and Lucas become stronger together and find their happily ever after with one another 🥹❤️❤️
I first read this when there were only a few chapters out on wattpad and I fell in love with the characters. I loved that version beyond belief and I love the published book the same. I'm so grateful that the lovely author, MJ, wrote this. Congratulations on the publication <3
I absolutely love this book with all my heart. I was one of the lucky ones to be here from the start when MJ was writing it in wattpad. I love that she has came so far and this book is perfect.
DNF @ 55%. The story is very disjointed and doesn’t flow well. Things jump around constantly and there’s too much filler with things that don’t contribute to the plot. My final straw was the assault and how Lucas responds to it and then the weird ass reveal she does at the hockey game.
if i could give this book 12 stars i would. this was quite literally one of the best books i’ve ever read. this book had me in tears half the time but in the best way possible. it ripped my heart out then put it back together then ripped it out again but the ending was so so worth it. i absolutely adore claire and i love how protective lucas is of her. ugh and the found family. this book is just so so good you have to read it. i cannot wait for more in this series.
Would read it when I want to take a break from books but I don’t want to not read. Would have liked more world building and less….just less. I feel like it was all dialogue.
