Killing Evil is a tour-de-force thriller. Jake Widmer crafts a high intensity, action-packed sequel to his debut novel Homecoming; this series focuses on the character of Chris Folly and his closest friends.
The main thing I love about this story (and in all Widmer’s books I've read thus far) is that the heroes (Folly and Grant) are not immune to the danger from the men who they are hunting. They get bruised, battered, shot, and wounded in the process on the streets of Pittsburg. They are skilled military men fighting skilled military men and those who have ties to organize crime; a group of gangsters who are unpredictable and don't play by any rules.
Another thing I loved about this book is that his supporting women characters (Rachel and Viki) are far from weak. They are fighters and warriors as well. They may not be strapped to the gills in military hardware lighting up the jungles of the war, but they fight with tenacity and can defend themselves. They are cunning, smart, and excellent marksmen (Rachel). They use their mind more than their fists (Viki). No weak damsels with those two.
Widmer’s high-caliber writing and story is fast-paced and lean. He is carving out his name for himself in the thriller genre with the hooked end of Folly’s tomahawk. These are extremely good tales that I will not soon forget. Widmer and Folly’s work is far from over. I see this series going for an extended period of time.
Readers and lovers of the Jack Reacher novels and Orphan X tales will feel right at home reading Widmer’s books.
