After her latest trip off-planet, Nyx Fortuna has every intention of keeping both feet firmly on Earth Between. Between trying to figure out why the Kumir have been hunting her friend Seth, searching for a way to destroy the Harvester of Worlds, and getting frustrated by the glacially slow return of her memories, she doesn’t have any time for planet-hopping.
Unfortunately, the universe has other plans. When she’s abducted from Earth Between, Nyx finds herself in the remote reaches of the universe, on planets unconnected to the Station’s ley lines. Her only hope lies in mastering the portal magic she’s only just discovered she has. But even if she can manage its use, does she have enough magic—and determination—to find her way back home?
Michelle lives in a desolate land with a dark wizard, a unicorn, and a feline overlord. Despite certain stereotypes you may be familiar with, the dark wizard is not holding her captive, nor does the unicorn require virgin riders. The feline overlord, however, may well be evil.
She holds dual BAs in English and Philosophy, which has gotten her about as far as you would expect it to in life. Despite all evidence to the contrary, she’s still desperately holding out hope that in an alternate reality she’s a sword-wielding princess.
I’ve been enjoying the world created by Manus in the Nyx Fortuna series. It’s a blend of urban fantasy and science fiction with travel between planets. Nyx, our heroine, is a Guardian of a Waystation on Earth Between. She protects the ley lines between planet pubs, checks passports and enforces the rules. Her station is magical. It’s bigger on the inside. The world-building is fantastic and with each book we learn more.
Listening to this series in the order of its release is necessary to follow the overall series arc.. Friendships are forged, and there is an arc regarding the Harvester of Worlds that Nyx wears around her neck.
After the events of the Guardian of Shadows, Nyx is happy to be back at the station. She is training with a new weapon, prodding her memories and enjoying events on Earth Between, but all of that changes when she is abducted. Nyx ends up in parts of the universe not connected to the station’s ley lines. She experiments with her own untested portal magic. Meanwhile, Seth and her friends at the station are trying desperately to reach her.
It was an excellent edition to the series. I enjoyed watching Nyx test her skills and seeing development with the romantic aspects of the storyline. Danger, new worlds and plenty of action await you!
This was a strong addition to the series, with Nyx learning more about her and others’ pasts and how found family can be so much better than the one to which you’re born. She finds out about some betrayals, both against her and against some she cares for, and there’s a good quick resolution of the potential love triangle. After the events of this book, Nyx now has a huge task and some very important lives to save, including her own.
We also are given some strong hints as to who Nyx’s father is.
I look forward to reading what happens next, and I am a bit impatient to note I’ll have to wait most of a year to find out. :)
It is a real debate whether to put this on my favorites shelf. Some of the series's weaknesses in development have shown through a bit. This book also seemed to re-write some of the previous facts presented in previous installments. It was as though the author decided a new direction for the series, and thusly had to change a few tidbits to make the adjustments work.
The beginning of the story sees only a little time pass from the end of the last story. Nyx, Seth, Morgen, Griff, and Evra, have all settled into their status quo. Morgen and Evra still haven't gone on their date and Seth and Nyx are dancing around each other. Kaliaris won't allow access to their heart, so Nyx hasn't been able to communicate with them. Griff is missing for the first stretch because he (weirdly, imo) used one of his opportunities to go on vacation. And Nyx is still waiting for Jevryn to show up, after she requested his presence to cash in a favor. The story takes a moment to really get its feet under it, as the author is sort of re-doing some of the fundamentals, especially where Nyx and Seth are concerned, as well as how the universe works, and how Earth plays into it all. Where it seemed that Earth was a busy way-station, it is now denoted as being a lesser used station. The real drama doesn't begin until Nyx is kidnapped. Then the real adventure gets underway.
The real meat of the story was entertaining and fun. I liked the adventure and the glimpses into other worlds. I do believe other books have done a little better job at making the wonder of the universe come alive on the page. This story felt more fun and was enjoyable, but none of it felt like a marvel, which I often find and enjoy with these types of world-jumping books. I appreciated that the author provided real stakes to Nyx seeing other places and interacting with the diversity of other planets. There was still some element missing that kept me from adoring the adventure provided in this book. However, I still greatly enjoyed it, nonetheless.
A lot of reveals occurred during this book, namely revolving around the Stations and the Harvester and how Jevryn and the All Council play into that tale. There were also some developments into Nyx and her magic status and abilities. I was glad to get those things, because the series was starting to feel a bit lost in its greater arcs, with no real momentum or direction. I look forward to seeing what happens in the next book.
Book 3 and I'm not stopping! I'm FULLY invested in this series. Well, after book 1 I was convinced I needed more. Book 2 hand me sold on searching for each book on release date. Book 3. I'm in for life! (Book 4 will be out in August. I'm going to preorder!)
This book is a little different. We get most of the book through Nyx's eyes, like the first two books. But with how events unfold here, we also get sections through Seth's eyes. I'm loving Seth. I also have thoughts about Nyx and Seth's past, which Nyx can't remember. They are so great together! With these two views, we get to see details we're wanting.
We have a more serious feel as the story starts. There are things that could be coming, and Nyx is trying to prepare. I missed the quick jabs and comments as our friends carry on in good nature. It happens, as they are getting ready for an event in Between Earth.
I'm still trying to figure out Kaden... Love for... her or just himself? I get a feel for this at the end of this book. But then more questions rise that circle around Nyx's mom and what she's done to Nyx. I love that we learn more about portal witches and portal travel. And even with the worlds out there.
So excited to meet a few new characters and I'm looking forward to seeing more of them!
The beginning of this book is our breathing space, before everything moves at neck breaking speed. And that breathing space is STILL fast moving! When things really start rolling, you'll be thankful for the breath at the beginning because you WON'T want to stop to digest what you're learn. You'll keep going! NEEDING ever word and action you get. The last 4 1/2 - 5 hours of this audio book was NON-STOP. Wow. I didn't want to stop with information and action I was getting.
Yes!!! So many questions were answered and so many questions uncovered. This series just keeps getting better. I Love Nyx. I love that she is bendable, yet NOT a doormat.
"The old instinct to comfort him rose in her. She acknowledged it and let it go."
Wow, the old Nyx and new Nyx, manage to remain fundamentally the same, but her power to recognize, acknowledge and accept vulnerability and abandonment issues, takes strength. I love the side characters, Morgen and Evra, Griff and the others. I love that romance adds to this story and never would I disagree with her choice, but I was pleasantly surprised that I managed to forgive the other ex. The angst felt real, and ouch did it hurt, this is from someone who cannot handle love triangles. I have to admit everything was wrapped up and wonderfully packaged into this book. I love how the author is going with this series and can't wait for the next one.
I kept happily binge reading through this book too, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Let's see how the space opera continues...
This book got the fifth star from me because I really enjoyed how Nyx experimented with her powers trying to rescue herself, and the plot tightens up a lot with more mysteries revealed from Nyx's past as well as the current state of affairs - some through actions of surprising characters and then the loyalty of those who have come to be part of Nyx's family circle. This book starts to show the grander scheme behind the All Council and where Nyx belongs.
The story continues in another book - of course I read it too!
This is my favorite of the series so far. I liked seeing Nyx come into her own a bit more and figite out some things about her life. I also liked the esy things progressed with Seth and others in her sphere.
Loved the first book, and I expected this book to go in a different direction. I will have to reread this a few times to appreciate where Manus is taking her story and her readers.
Nyx is likable, humorous and smart. She has a big heart and I can’t help but root for her. I enjoyed the way she, and her relationships evolved in this story.
