Persephone Goddess of the Not So Undead

Rate this book
They're not quite zombies. They're not quite human. And they're definitely not how Seffy Schmidt wants to spend her Tuesday.

Persephone has always lived in the shadow of her practically-flawless stepsister Iris, even more so after accidentally shooting Miss Perfect in the chest during a misguided and wine-cooler-soaked turkey hunt. Now the cutting-edge treatment that saved her stepsister's life -- while somehow making her even more disgustingly amazing -- might be responsible for an outbreak that's turning the entire population of the Greater Fargo-Moorhead Area into oddly-human zombies.

Armed with nothing more than her wits, a shovel, and memories of her past glory in the realm of high school science fairs, Seffy realizes that she might hold the key to saving her family, her hometown, and maybe even the world.

Regan Wolfrom (born at the tail end of the disco era) has come a long way from his 1986 debut novel Harry the Adventurous Hamster (currently out of print due to having never been published or completed). After a break from writing to attend puberty, and to eventually sell six packs of Molson Canadian to his misnamed crush, Moosehead Girl, Regan returned to the craft with reckless abandon and a gallon jug of iced tea with just a smattering of extremely cheap rum.

Regan is now the author of numerous short stories and an upcoming post-apocalyptic novel series with only one mention (so far) of zombie erections. Regan hopes to one day write a novel set on Mars while sitting in his boxer shorts on the actual Red Planet, and everything that comes before that is really just his way of saving up for the one-way trip.

Though Regan has been shafted by residency requirements in his pursuit of the MacArthur genius grant, his current fiction is considered to be of high caliber, reflecting a marked improvement in style and grammar from the aforementioned thing with the hamster. It also has far fewer graphic scenes of pound puppy plushes having sex in the back of a shoebox with paper wheels.

What does Regan have to say about Regan?

"I recently passed up the chance to hassle Samuel L. Jackson."

"I've always wanted to change my name to something boring, like Hugh Howey."

"I know how to cook six things. None of them are oatmeal."

"I write stories that are weird, a little dark, and definitely inappropriate for my children. It could be tough to keep that going when they get to be as old and weird as I am today."

"Oh... and my dog is in love with me... like... in a disturbing way."

I really liked this book!! It has a great spin on a zombie Apocalypse and you'll love the ride from beginning to end!! I think Seffy is great as a heroin because she brave, strong, and funny as hell!! I just love Jetta and her faucet !!! I think every one knows someone just like her!! And I think that Iris might have got a bum deal on everyone thinking shes perfect !! I mean even before her "Incident". You will never believe the cause, You'll meet a couple of butts , and you'll never believe what some people will do just to save some lives!! You'll love this book and beg for another!!

Not your usual zombie story . . . .

Most zombie stories have the same feel; they have similar origins, spread, and endings. These zombies are smart, act normal, and keep their personalities. You can't tell they are infected, and that's how they get you close enough to bite you.
The lead characters in this story, some of them become good zombies. They have found a cure, and now their bites can cure other infected. But how can a small group of cured ex-zombies, who are surrounded by masses of thinking infected who don't want to be cured, who in turn are surrounded by the rest of the population and the military, save the day? The military has cut them off, trying to isolate and quarantine the disease while also trying to hide the outbreak from the rest of the population.

An Interesting Premise, Poorly Written

The premise is awesome, but the writing was lacking in the creative department. A HUGE disappointment. It's downright depressing. Seriously.

I received a copy through LibraryThing. This book had an interesting idea, but was not able to carry through with it. There wasn't a very strong plot and very little character development. The characters were pretty two-dimensional. Even the narration was confusing at times. I found myself rereading sections multiple times but was still unsure of what was supposed to be happening. Overall, this was not a very entertaining book, which is disappointing because I think it started out with an idea that had a lot of potential.

I received an Early Review copy from LibraryThing.

It's an interesting concept, but it lacked in plot depth. I found it difficult to follow the narration because different characters kept popping up in one go, and also there was too much going on. On the plus side, it was humorous, the obviously jealous-yet not so jealous- sister dynamic had me amused. A part two seems needed. I felt there was more to it, than that ending.

I won this book from Library Things in exchange for an honest review.

The author made an amateurish attempt at writing a zombie novel. The plot was confusing as was the dialogue. Characters were flat and overall the story seemed rushed.

I want to say there was a good plot here that just didn't flourish under Regan Wolfrom's hands, but I'm not even sure what the plot was. Were they zombies or not?

Not one of the better zombie books out there.

I was given the opportunity to read this for free in exchange for an honest review from librarything.com.

First, let me say that I am BIG on the zombie genre. This story had a unique and funny twist to it. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and hope to get the chance to read the next story. It flows very well and is smart, without being too bogged down with details.

A very enjoyable read.

A funny and different book. You can't help but cheer on Persephone and her cohorts as they endeavor to keep from being infected and I’d be happy to read more of “whatever that was”.
