He stole her heart once. She won’t let that happen again…
Stealing back her grandmother’s necklace—the one that was brutally taken from her a decade ago—was easy for Evie Madison. Letting the hot Frenchman who abandoned her that fateful night help her escape, however, was not. But she has no intention of letting him anywhere near her heart. Not again, anyway… Raphael Dauphin thought he’d lost Evie forever. But now he has a second chance, and he’ll do anything to win her back. His plan is to offer her his protection…in exchange for her posing as his fiancée to help him secure a crucial property deal. Maybe then they’ll be able to turn their fake relationship into a real happily ever after… It's not long before Evie and Raph discover their chemistry is stronger than ever. Unfortunately, so is the enemy they’re facing. Who knew coming together again could threaten more than their hearts this time around? Stealing Hearts, book 2 in the Tangled Hearts series, is a sexy romantic suspense novel that can be read as a standalone.
Sara Claridge writes contemporary romantic suspense. Born in West London, she inexplicably moved to France several years ago on a whim.
When not writing at her desk in the eaves of an old farmhouse, she can be found in the garden. Usually with a glass of red wine in one hand and a good book in the other.
This is a wonderful contemporary romantic suspense. To me, it felt more romantic than suspenseful (although there’s plenty of suspense) and although being contemporary, it had a rich, historical feeling to it: Instead of feeling “hip,” the luscious descriptions and word choices lent it the feel of the bygone days of romance, complete with class differences, honor and beautiful clothes.
Evie’s heart was broken on the night, ten years ago, when Raph, the love of her life, abandoned her inexplicably and her heirloom necklace was stolen in a mugging that nearly killed her. When Evie has finally regained her necklace – through a bit of thievery – and bumps into Raph in the marketplace making her escape, is it any wonder she believes this is more than coincidence? Raph abandoned her the night her necklace was stolen and now that she has recovered it, he’s the first person she meets?
Raph has his own reasons for distrusting Evie – believing that it was she who abandoned him that night ten years ago.
Now, thrown together again for a suspenseful cat-and-mouse game where Evie and the necklace are targets, can they trust each other enough to work together? Old feelings are rekindled in both of them despite their lack of confidence in each other as they run from whoever has trashed Evie’s hotel room, tried to run her over in the street and made an attempt at poisoning…
Raph and Evie were believable characters as was the relatively small cast of secondary characters. Though I did want to shake both Evie and Raph at different points because of their hard-headed refusal to give up their mistrust! The plot picks up with break neck speed toward the end, and the culprit was a surprise to me and yet was completely plausible.
This was an enjoyable romance with some well-portrayed sex scenes that were not too graphic. And naturally, being a romantic at heart, I enjoyed the ending. :)
French Retribution by Sara Claridge is a contemporary romance with elements of suspense. When I chose this book I didn’t realize it was the third in a series but I thought it worked well as a stand-alone novel anyway.
The story stars the beautiful Evie Madison who is trying to retrieve an heirloom necklace that was stolen from her a decade prior. By chance she runs into an old lover, Raphael Dauphin, and the sparks begin to fly.
I really enjoyed the beautiful setting and scenery portrayed in the story. The author made it easy to imagine yourself in southern France, even peppering the book with French words that are commonly known or easy to figure out through context.
I would recommend this story to anyone in the mood for a romantic escape!
I loved this just as much as the first two stories in this series! The chemistry and tension begin to build from page one, and as Raph and Evie fight their emotional and physical attraction to each other, the suspense of the story carries the reader along so that there isn't a page that can be missed. This is a quick, engaging, and very satisfying read. Claridge writes scenes full of passion that are as classy as they are explicit, with a focus on the emotional bond between her characters. I will read anything she writes, without question. Highly recommended.
French Retribution is the story of Raph and Evie. This is the second book, I believe, in the French Romance Series. I have read the first book French Restoration and I must say the author has kept a soothing synchronization between the two books. However, the stories are different from each other. This story felt more like a second-chances in romance where after ten years Raph and Evie unknowingly crossed each other’s path in the backdrop of a small Spanish town. The author has created a fairy tale world—Spain, Coastal France, and enough of the male hormones to make any woman’s imagination run wild. I really liked the author’s writing style. There’s enough sprinkling of French words in the book but they blended beautifully with the English prose. The chemistry between the lead couple was mind-blowing and the minty moments between them kept me turning the pages. Both the characters were well rounded and believable. However, I indeed wanted to explore Raph’s character a bit more. There’s enough suspense and romance and the love scenes were portrayed just too beautiful, not explicit, not too graphic, yet sensuous and erotic. Anyone who’s looking for an intriguing suspenseful read with a sizzling chemistry and mind-blowing love should go for the book.
In a marketplace in Spain, dashing, wealthy businessman Raph comes across old flame Evie, and she’s on the run. Rescuing her from her pursuers may not be the obvious thing, because the relationship ended very messily, but there’s an arrangement they can come to — because Evie needs someone to help her and Raph needs a fiancee of convenience.
French Retribution begins with high drama and the level of it only escalates. Evie and Raph are keeping secrets from each other, even as they become mutually dependent — but it’s Evie’s possession of a necklace she’s stolen back after it was snatched from her in a mugging years before that puts her into danger — and as their romance reignites, Raph finds himself compelled to help.
Full of twists and turns, with high drama and strong compelling characters against exotic locations in and around the Mediterranean, French Retribution is an exciting, unnerving and fast-paced read — and easily one of the best romantic suspense novels I’ve read.
Beautifully written romance with love, lust, sass, and drama. The suspense is intriguing and the tension between Raph and Evie is page turner sizzling. The author paints a lovely portrait of European settings … a Spanish marketplace, a coastal road in France, the estate above the sea. It had a most dreamy quality and I longed to be there.
There are a number of French words that this poor monolingualist English speaking reader skipped over. I finally had to know one of Raph’s favorite terms, putain. Oh, merde. I wouldn’t have guessed. Although the f-bomb was dropped a few times, I took no offense, but know that some readers do. In such a lovely setting, it did surprise me.
The author’s writing is strong and the story flowed nicely. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a délicieux escape.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a second chance romance, set in the France with a background of lies, secrets, misunderstandings, and betrayal.
Evie is in France stealing what she thinks is just her grandmother's necklace back when she runs into an old flame. Things ended badly between the two of them, but they are still drawn to each other and come to a business arrangement.
Business arrangements when you still have feelings for each other never quite work out the way you think they will when you come up with the idea for one. No one should TECHNICALLY know Evie has stolen her grandmother's necklace back, but someone is hunting her for it.
The book was a fast paced read and didn't shy away from the steamy scenes, the passion, or anger from certain characters. The bad guy is the bad guy you may suspect if you're paying close enough attention, but it's nice to have it confirmed towards the end as there are several feints to the left and other possible characters that could be the villain.
It was an excited read and I'd be interested in reading the first two books in the series
Another enjoyable story from Sara Claridge's "A Tangled Heart" series.
A chance meeting in a Spanish town between Oxfordshire born Evie (Evangelina) and wealthy French property dealer Ralph (Raphael Dauphin) was to change both their lives. Although Evie pretended not to recognise him, Ralph couldn't mistake the eyes that had enchanted him ten years ago, their love affair had ended dramatically, the break was bitter.
Both Evie and Ralph now needed help, neither trusted the other but needs must and they agreed to join forces and help each other…… Ralph needed a fiance to secure a property deal and Evie needed help to protect her grandmothers precious pendant that had been stolen from Evie during an attack and that in turn Evie had stolen from the present owner.
Throw into the mix Evie's no good controlling brother Tristram, wealthy Etienne Castel, Ralph's enemy and who he was sure that Evie had cheated on him with, also the fact that someone wanted Evie dead and you have a story that has loads of action, loads of suspense and a beautiful rekindling, heart warming romance.
I received a free copy of this book and my review is voluntary.
A delightful tangle of romance and suspense that may just get you a bit hot under the collar!
And what a tangle it is! Circumstances conspire to bring Evie and her old flame Raph back in each other’s life. Despite how things ended between them, they are now in need of each other’s help. It’s a thrilling story of should they, shouldn’t they, when it comes to trusting their hearts.
The author creates a beautiful setting where this story unravels. The well-chosen French words made me smile at times because it really brought Raph to life. I could really picture him saying that as if it was in a movie scene.
The plot is not a complicated one but is light enough to fit in nicely in this easy read. It’s definitely a book, I’ll take away on a summer holiday.
The book is a good, and enjoyable steamy second chance romantic suspense read. The story has a good story line. The characters are good, and they have good chemistry.

What an interesting story! A little suspense and a very captivating story. This is Raph and Evie story. It is a nicely developed story that I really enjoyed. Love the characters and the play between them.
This is book two in The Tangled Hearts Series and it is Evie and Raph's story and it is a must read. This book was so well written with twists and turns along the way and it has betrayal, danger, resentment, tragedy, action, misunderstanding and chemistry and that is what makes this book a real page turner that I couldn't put down. This is the first book that I have read by Sara Claridge and I enjoyed it so much that I look forward to reading more of her books in the future.

This is a well written second chance romance with strong characters in Evie and Ralph. The author brings intrigue and suspense, twists and turns, drama and romance and delivers a fast paced story with vividly painted scenes. I enjoyed reading their story and would recommend this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
Suspenseful Second-Chance Romance in European Settings
French Retribution is a beautifully written romantic suspense. While a review like this requires at least a little bit of summary, I feel loath to give too much away because the author does a fantastic job of revealing information slowly over the course of the book.
This is a second chance at romance story. Two former lovers accidentally meet on the street of a small Spanish town. It's been ten years since I've seen each other. Each thinks the other had abandoned them on a fateful night back then, but this is true for neither of them. So no, both have anger and resentment, but even after all this time, they have definite chemistry and attraction to each other.
Along with this romantic plot, there is also a suspense plot. Evie, the heroine, has taken back a necklace that was stolen from her ten years ago, and somehow someone has figured out that she may be the culprit, placing her life in danger.
Will Evie and Raph gain a true understanding of their split ten years ago? How will these former lovers react to their current circumstances? Can they trust each other, which is so important because of the danger that Evie is in? Who is after Evie? Who originally stole it from her ten years ago?
As someone who took French in both high school and college, I adored that the author sprinkled in lots of French words and phrases. This gave the book a real flavor that sets it apart from similar books in the contemporary romance genre. The author writes with a heightened, but accessible, use of language that is just lovely to read. She chose great settings for this book, Spain and coastal France, and through her use of language, we get a strong sense of them. The chemistry of the couple was palpable. The steamy scenes in the book were appropriate and showed the emotions of the moment beautifully. The book appeared to be well edited, as it was delightfully free of errors in punctuation, grammar, and usage.
If you enjoy romance with a little bit of mystery and an appropriate amount of steaminess, you might enjoy this book.
The third book in the French Romance series and the second book in the Tangled Hearts a short well-written story that held my interest throughout. Raphael Dauphin and Evie Madison’s story has suspense, evil, drama, danger,a villain closer than Evie knows, and romance. I enjoyed reading. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
If you like wealthy, spoiled socialites who keep secrets from one another, and are desperate enough, despite their incredible wealth, to betray (and even murder) each other over disputes other than keeping their source of wealth, then this is a well-written, sparkling book with double entendres (now I'm using French, like the book occasionally does!)
Sometimes I thought the mistrust between the two lovers (Raph, short for Raphael and not the plain name Ralph, so I had to adapt), and Evie (short for Evangelina) was a bit too much, as it's hard to imagine them falling in love if they can't even be sure they're not deceiving each other. But this is the stuff of which swoon-like romance is made, so this is fun to read.
I also wasn't sure what was the fuss over a historical necklace worth eight thousand Euros (probably worth a few nights' stay at the most expensive hotel in the French Riviera) but again, it was fun to suspend disbelief. Especially incomprehensible was how it led to such a earth-shattering impact to the brother and sister bond between Tristan and Evie.
Again, enjoy it for what it is, a frothy, fun, beach read. It goes to exotic locales in the French Riviera and swanky hotels and projects of the rich and famous (auctions of fine jewels, bidding for country estates in sun-kissed tourist hotspots). What's not to like?
The sex scenes were fun to read too. Just a couple, and it didn't read like erotica.
French Retribution is a sensual, endearing 2nd chance at love. Years of resentment caused by a tragic misunderstanding separates two young people in love. 10 years later Fate plays a role in bringing them back into contact over a mystical family heirloom. They both need each other, for different reasons and so a fragile, tendentious bargain is made.
“A decade of mistrust lay in between. Yet interwoven in the waves of tension was a frisson of longing she couldn’t deny… but now out here in the silence of the night it had a beguiling power of its own… The years fell away. Her body knew what it wanted and her mind wasn’t capable of resisting… The growl of his satisfaction at her submission was a balm to her anxiety. `I’ve missed how you turn my blood to fire’.”
From my Avid Reader’s Wish List -
I like the author’s frequent use French words and idioms. It adds a sense of place and ambiance, but a Glossary of French terms would provide added comprehension.
The book is well edited (loved the cover), but it could benefit from a more logical and convincing plot, particularly the climax at the end.
Adventure. Drama. Romance. Second chance romance done right. One of the stand-out things to me about this story was the beautiful descriptions that surrounded everything. With the settings so easy to imagine, I was able to slip in and join Evie and Raph as they navigate the tricky waters of deception when mingled with love.
I loved the imperfect nature of them both and that they didn’t just fall into each other’s arms on first glance. The history between them and the present state, added to realism of the unfolding relationship. It was complex, smart, and still sexy. Aside from romance the story had a wonderful amount of adventure, tension, and drama making it a balanced multi-genre read.
Fans of romantic suspense will love this story and its strong characters. You can easily read this without needed to read the other parts in the series. I never felt like I was missing anything. I recommend it.
This was a delightful, fast read. I really enjoyed it. I think this is the first book I've ever read that managed to be light and yet suspenseful at the same time. The opening pulled me in immediately, and the book kept my attention. At first I was mildly curious about the necklace that Evie, the main character, is obsessed with, but as the story developed, I became obsessed, too. By the end, my husband came in to talk to me about something and I was like, not now! I'm right in the middle of the best part of my book! The setting was a lot of fun. I really liked being carried away to the south of France, and reading about some familiar places. The book isn't overly descriptive, yet still gives you enough to put you right there. I think anyone who likes romance with some suspense and action thrown in would enjoy this. A nice twist at the ending. I read it in one sitting.
I quite enjoy the author's writing style. It has such a nice flow that makes for easy reading. Anyway, the characters are wonderful together...if only they would talk more rather than stew. (To clarify, the not talking they do makes for nice slightly angsty drama that works with the storyline.) They have a nice second chance story with fake fiancee vibes and I believe it is wonderfully done! I did see the villain coming, but I liked what the author did with the story and the reveal was intense.
It is not necessary to read the first book in the series to enjoy this one, but I recommend doing so because that book is fun and introduces one of the main characters of this one.

Romance with intrigue--nothing is as it seems at first, except that Raph and Evie love each other. This intricately crafted book details Raph and Evie's second chance, plus a mystery involving a necklace she inherited from her grandmother. The two main characters edge around each other, longing and resisting because of misconceptions about an event years ago. There are several secondary characters, but it is not clear who the real villain is until near the end. The writing is excellent; Sara Claridge keeps it all straight in her lovely way. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The plot didn't move quickly enough for my taste. It took awhile to really get started and then ended abruptly. Suggest this author stick to writing romances and leave crime and mysteries to others.
I wasn't sure as I started this book...wasn't sure I'd like it, wasn't sure u could dig through the European references since I've never been to Europe (some day....) but I got tangled in the story and had to read on and on! Definitely a page turner!
Another fantastic instalment in the series. Delightfully romantic, with a touch of steam. Kept me hooked from the start. Great characters, and a well written storyline. Would recommend.

I love this series. The women are feisty and the men are alpha enough to handle them. Add missing jewels, misunderstandings and spicy scenes and this book has it all set in an exotic location.
