Rate this book
In a world turned upside down by war and betrayal...will his role as a spy bring them closer…or tear their future apart?

The war that Julia Dodd prayed to avoid is now reality, and with it, her world has been turned on its head. Her fellow citizens, who stood with her in their support of the union, have crossed firmly to the side of the south. And her mother, lost in her grief over the loss of her husband and children, can think of nothing but protecting Julia’s brother’s inheritance. She insists that her daughter seek a wealthier husband than Ashburn Mitchell.

Ash knows what his fellow citizens think of him when he refuses to fight for the Confederacy. Shouldering the accusation of being a coward and refusing to hide behind his limp, Ash remains in Vicksburg to support his family as a saddler while his two best friends join the fight. Struggling to increase his business so he can marry the woman he loves, Ash becomes a spy in support of the Union. He can’t fight for the South but won’t raise a musket against them.

As tragedy instigates Ash to risk greater danger to speed the end of the war, Julia can only pray it won’t cost them everything. She’s already lost her father and two siblings. Must she lose the man she loves too?

1861 Vicksburg, Mississippi

This entire series is a fascinating look at what it was like for an everyday citizen to be a spy during the US Civil War. In Streams of Courage, both main characters are union supporters living in the south. The history specific to Mississippi during this time period was all new information.

Be prepared to be on the edge of your seat while reading this story! Set during the U.S. Civil War it is chock full of historical detail, heartfelt romance, suspense and interpersonal conflict. I really appreciated all the research this author did to bring time period details to life in an authentic and captivating way. I have read several of this author’s books and come away feeling like I have learned something new after each read. This book highlighted not only the conflict in Vicksburg, Mississippi but also the internal battles faced by individual citizens and what they should do about them. Ash Mitchell faced scorn and judgment for his not enlisting for the Confederacy and the way in which he stood up for his beliefs made for a riveting tale fraught with danger. Julia Dodd faced personal struggles within her own family and sought to stand up for her values. I enjoyed the supporting characters including the main characters’ siblings and friends. Loved the author’s notes at the end of the book which supplied more information about the story’s background. While this title is part of a series, this particular book can be read as a stand alone.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book by Celebrate Lit. A positive review was not required and these are my honest opinions.

This is Book four in the Spies of the Civil War series, but reads as a stand-alone. This is my first I have read in the series and each takes place in a different location. This one takes place in Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1861 and is very informative. You can tell the author has done extensive research and I found it fascinating. These are people who could have been your neighbors having to choose sides and keeping it secret as you would be persecuted for your unionist beliefs. Ash and Julie find themselves in a budding romance amidst these troubling times as he also does everything he can to serve a country he loves and stay true to his convictions. Each of them are the protectors of their families with lots of responsibility that they take seriously. I really enjoyed this book even though it was slower paced as the story couldn’t be rushed. It meanders like a slow moving stream that holds your attention by its beauty. I recommend this especially if you love history.
I received a complimentary copy from CelebrateLit. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.

The historical details in the story are well-researched giving the story its authenticity and creating a sense of being there. Part of the story is heartbreaking while other parts show courage and inspiration. The character of Ash is one such person.

I loved the budding romance between Ash and Julia. Julia is steadfast in her faith and love of family as well as Ash. The story shows the hardship the people of Vicksburg endured, but also their ability to overcome. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. Highly recommended.

I received a complimentary copy from Netgalley and willingly chose to review it. All opinions are my own.

Unforgettable characters, vivid setting, and – as always with a Sandra Merville Hart novel – beautifully researched. You’ll feel the pull of loyalties, the scorn of disapproval, the grief of loss, and the hope of something more. A wonderful fourth book for this series.

“Friends on opposite side of the conflict. It wasn’t supposed to happen this way”

“It will be the adventure of a lifetime.”

The best thing about Streams of Courage by Sandra Merville Hart is that I feel like I am more familiar with some aspects of the Civil War, especially but not limited to the Battle of Vicksburg. Hart has written her story in such an engaging way that the you as the reader will feel like you are in the midst of the conflict… be it between friends, family members, neighbors, fellow Mississippians, or Northerners vs. Southerners.

One thing I loved is how Hart shows that the division, while it creates hatred and contempt in some hearts, creates great pain and soul-searching for those like Ash. Ash, who lives in Vicksburg, Mississippi , but remains loyal to the Northern cause, is forced to watch years of friendship, neighborliness, and business turn sour as his loyalties are questioned. One question Hart brings to the forefront for all of us, is embodied by Ash’s question: “Shall I only support the Union in principle but not in action?” How many of us believe in something, whether our faith or some venture that will be a blessing to people, but fail to take action?

Ash certainly takes action as he begins to spy for the North. He quickly discovers he has to be very secretive about his activities to protect his family and eventually Julia and her family. Unfortunately, as Ash and Julia begin to court and become close, Julia can sense he’s shutting her out of part of his life. How long can Julia trust him with her heart if he is holding back some of his?
“You’re keeping something from me.” He turned to face her. His hazel eyes smoldered. “We’re at war.” “Not with each other!”

After you have read this book, you may feel like I do, like I almost understand better both sides of the conflict. Sometimes we like to paint one side of this ( or any conflict) as totally wrong vs right, but Hart does well to remind us there can be honorable people holding opposing positions.

There is plenty of suspense with all the spying that Ash takes on. Also, we catch some shelling in the Battle of Vicksburg, and again, feel like we could be the ones trembling with the cannnonballs’ hits, wandering whether we should run away from the city or try to shelter and hope for the best. I did love the solution Julia’s family came up with, but it came with its own health risks.

Julia through all this, has to learn to be strong. She is more mother to her brother, Eddy, than her mother has been since being widowed. She has to care for the house as well. Plus she has to be strong, as time goes on, for her mother and Eddy, when she is wild with fear. Only God could help her.

Which brings me to one of the best quotes Mrs. Dodd, Julia’s mother makes, as she starts to resume her rightful place in the family. Young Eddy is confused by the conflict, and Julia and her mother have tried to keep him safe by sheltering him from their true beliefs.
Finally, Mrs. Dodd declares, “Eddie is like a rudderless vessel.” Mama spoke with conviction. “Searching for answers. He needs to know our views. If we don’t teach him what we believe, he will find someone else willing to speak. Who knows what lies people will pour into his tender ears?” THIS! Why do we think our kids will have any chance of choosing our faith if we let them wait until they’re old enough to decide? Someone else WILL step in and teach them values, often not ours, if we stand back and wait.

So much historical fact, raw emotion, truth, and a bit of romance mixed together to make a very enjoyable few hours.

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own ecopy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Sandra Merville Hart has once again written a great book. "Streams of Courage" is the second book I have read from this author, and it did not disappoint. Hart is a masterful writer and brings the historical scenes to life in her writing. This book is full of faith, and it gets tested a lot. Sandra Hart also takes the reader on an emotional, high-stakes ride. "Streams of Courage" is the fourth book in the Spies of the Civil War series, but it can be read as a standalone book.

The main female character of the book is Julia, who has endured a lot of tragedy just like her mother. Julia's mother wants her to marry a wealthy man named Carlton, but he turns out to be a world-class jerk who only wants a wife for status purposes. Julia is not interested in him and sends him packing, much to her mother's dismay.

The main male character, Ash, is in love with Julia and wants to marry her, but he is not in a financial position to do so, especially according to Julia's mother. He has had an accident that left him with a bad leg and a limp. He cannot join the war and nor does he really want to, but he can join as a spy. His resolve to not pick up arms will be tested, will he fail?

The book is set right when the Civil War begins, so Julia and Ash are going about their everyday lives when war is announced. "Streams of Courage" takes the reader on a journey that highlights the challenges faced by people during the Civil War. The book shows us that we must rely on God, especially during times like this, because we do not know what will happen and how it will happen. We will have to rely on Him to get us through and to show us whether to fight or abstain. Just like in this book, it can be a hard choice, and there may be hostilities from people we once thought were our closest friends and even family.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Streams of Courage." It kept me engaged with its twists and turns and maintained a good pace throughout. If you're looking for a Christian historical romance, this book is definitely worth reading.

I received a complimentary copy from the author through Celebrate Lit, for my honest opinion.

They live in dangerous time. War is imminent, their state of Mississippi has seceded from the Union and yet they side with the Union. Due to the amount of turmoil and hatred and mistrust that has spread, neighbor is rising against neighbor.

Julia Dodd is a young woman who has been praying for a peaceful solution between the North and the South. Now that they are at war, she must put on a brave face and continue on with her life, watching out for her little brother and fending off the wealthy suitors her mother has picked for her. Those that are left. Julia is in love with Ash whose social class is not quite what Julia's mother has in mind. Julia also finds out some heartbreaking news that makes her question her worth to her own family.

Ash is bound and determined not to join the Confederate army and fight for a cause he does not believe in. He also has a terrible limp, that for now will exclude him. However, he is looked at as an enemy by those left behind as he has made his views public in the past. Now he must act above reproach while he signs up to a dangerous mission for the North. He is now a spy. If he survives, he would like to marry Julia.

This story brought the turmoil of a breaking country right into the lives of those living in that time. This was just one city, in one state, and the distrust was palpable. This story moved rather quickly as these two watched as their world goes from bad to worse, and more hatred is spread. I appreciated the author showing these two characters stand up for what they believed in and doing something about it. All the while trying not to harm those against them. Their belief was strong enough for them to see this through.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

Being a spy during any war would be so terrifying for me personally! No matter my convictions, it would be hard! I applaud those who take on that danger and risk everything for their country and their convictions to do so! Not only for their personal safety but also for their loved ones. I have loved all the books in this series. Although the "spying" has focused on the Civil War, it can still translate to any war in which spying takes place. The danger is real, and the consequences are devastating, depending on the enemy. Since I recently visited Vicksburg on a vacation, this book was especially meaningful to me. I could picture the city and the landscape in my mind as I read the story. The author does a fantastic job with the historical facts and the characters are realistic. Since I visited many of the areas she wrote about, I know the author did her homework! Ash & Julia had many adversities to overcome. They were both Union sympathizers living in an area that joined the Confederate cause. Ash wouldn't join the Confederate army because of it and was ridiculed but most thought it was because of his bum leg. They didn't know he supported the Union and ended up being a spy! Julia's family had extended family issues to deal with AND her mother wanted her to marry a wealthy man, which Ash was not! I appreciated the fact that she held firm in her desire that Ash was the one for her. I also liked the Ash proved time and time again that he was a man of character. A very good story!

Streams of Courage is book four in the Spies of the Civil War series that is written by Sandra Merville Hart. I have read the other books on the series and was really excited to see a new release. I also love that this did set in Vicksburg. Vicksburg has been a bucket list wish to visit.

Julia Dodd lost her brothers and dad in the Civil War. She has been staunch on her stand and has watched as friends, family and other townspeople drift slowly to support the Confederacy. Her mother doesn’t want her to marry Ash. She thinks her daughter can do better.

Ash is used to people thinking he’s a coward for not wanting to side with the Confederacy. However he wants to be able to support his family. He soon decides he’s going to spy for the North. He has to be careful since he’s already being considered an outsider.

He suddenly has to be selective to what he tells Julia. He’s not sure who he can trust and who may be spying for the confederate army. While Julia and her family may say they are pro-Union you don’t know what goes on behind closed doors. I love reading all things espionage especially during the Civil War.

Our characters are well written. I felt that we got to know Julia and Ash deeply during this story.

The author has captured this time period beautifully. She has done great and careful research. No matter what side you were on the cost was large.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

Melville Hart never disappoints. Her factional historical romances always keep me turning the pages. Just like the first three books in her Spies of the Civil War that took place in Gettysburg, Sandra has done deep, thorough research into Vicksburg and it shows. Book #4 takes the reader to Vicksburg Mississippi and gives us a taste of life before and during the Civil War. Ash is such a wonderful hero. His lame knee keeps him from serving in the war he opposes. Yet, he helps the Union without firing a shot at his long-time friends who have joined the Confederate cause. Historically, Vicksburg didn’t want to secede from the United States. But their loyalty to the state of Mississippi took precedence. And that is where we find Ash and Julie, who is not only a unionist but the girl of his dreams.
The setting came to life as the pair interacted with the community and kept their political thoughts to themselves. Susan gives us a child’s eye view of the war through Julie’s young brother. And Ash and Julie’s widowed mothers had their opinion of what was happening around them. I love the emotional tension that escalates as Ash spies for the Union and Julie tries to keep her mother and brother safe as rockets blast Vicksburg.
Hart captured the emotions and reality of the time within the pages of Streams of Courage. I fell in love with Ash and Julie and cheered for their happily ever after. Can’t wait for Susan’s next book in the series.

This thrilling addition to the Spies of the Civil War series is a powerful reminder of the divisions created by the Civil War. Our country was divided into North and South, family members fought against each other, and neighbors chose different sides. Steams of Courage takes place in Vicksburg, Mississippi, where most of the citizens chose the Southern view. There were, however, some who became the targets of threats and physical danger because they supported the Union cause. Was it any wonder that they kept their loyalties secret? Was this why Ash Mitchell kept his questionable activities hidden?

Streams of Courage is a compelling story of defending your beliefs when they aren't popular, and author Sandra Merville Hart provides a poignant picture of the sacrifices made during this tragic time. I was fully engaged in the sweet romance, inspiring faith message, and fascinating historical details, and Hart's descriptive talents helped me hear the sounds of battle, smell the smoke from the gunfire, and feel the uncertainty and fear. I recommend Streams of Courage to all who enjoy historical Christian fiction.

Streams of Courage is the fourth book in the Spies of the Civil War series and you’re going to absolutely love reading it! The Civil War is a time period in history that I love studying.

This book takes place in Vicksburg. Our hero won’t fight for the South. But he won’t shoot his friends who are either. So, he’s in a hard spot. In order to do his part he decides to become a spy. He wants to save up and marry the woman he loves.

Of course, her mother tells her she has to do better than him. That’s why he’s trying to increase his fortune.

Julia loves Ash. But she’s already lost her father and two of her siblings. She can’t bear losing him as well. She also must stand for what she believes in.

This is a wonderful novel. I loved the characters and watching them as they deal with what they know is right and standing up for it while also protecting those they love.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. Streams of Courage by Sandra Merville Hart is a Christian Historical Fiction. Julia Dodd prayed for the country to avoid going to war against each other, but that prayer went unanswered. She wishes to marry Ashburn Mitchell, but her mother does not approve. Her mother finds herself caught up in the grief of losing her husband and children. She fixates on saving the inheritance of Julia’s brother.

Ashburn Mitchell finds himself accused of being a coward and hiding behind his limp instead of joining the fight. His two best friends go off to fight while he remains in Vicksburg and tries to support his family as a saddler. The author develops a spellbinding novel illustrating the difficulties during the war – especially when you support the other side.

I found myself unable to put it down. I was engrossed in the plot and loved getting to know the characters. The author's intertwining of life, faith, and overcoming devastating events makes this a book I highly recommend.

So, if you enjoy Christian Historical Fiction, check out Streams of Courage by Sandra Merville Hart.

Christian Historical Romance Fiction is a favorite genre of mine. Streams of Courage by Sandra Merville Hart is the latest book in this genre that I have read. It is Book 4 in the Spies of the Civil War Series. I have been enjoying the series since Book 1 and was excited to learn that Book 4 is released.

I jumped right into reading this book as soon as I received it and I was intrigued by the storyline. I really LOVE the Civil War Era and the time of 1861 for the story. The 2 main characters are Ash and Julia. Ash is a spy in support of the Union and Julia and her family are Union Supporters. Ash wants to marry Julia, although her mother wants her to marry a wealthy man. Ash is hiding some things from Julia as he puts himself in dangers way. I really LOVE how Ash and Julia have trials and dangers, but they overcome. The author has really done her research for the Historical period of this book. There were many twists and turns for this storyline and I LOVED how the book wasn't predictable! The book is faith-based and has some faith references. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Fiction! FABULOUS BOOK!

Streams of Courage” is a poignant story taking place during the Civil War. There’s a lot of raw soul-searching, struggles, and division, but ultimately is a rewarding and touching read.

I connected so easily with Julia and Ash and empathized with them each on their journeys. I love how the author created such a strong attraction and bond between the two, who weren’t exactly on the same side. It certainly shows how we can love and have mercy for those who differ.

This is such a meaningful story with many memorable moments and powerful characters—but one supporting character stands out to me…Julia’s mother says some powerful statements that ring through history.

Whether you’ve read the previous books in this series or not, this book is powerful, moving, and stands all on its own.

First Line: Unbelievable.

This series has given me an entirely different perspective on what took place during the Civil War. The sacrifices people made were always apparent but I never really thought of the average folks that risk everything for their strong beliefs. This is book 4, and it is centered in Vicksburg Mississippi. We watch as Ash risks everything to help the Union in his mainly southern town. His love, Julia, also shares his views but he must keep her safe by keeping his secrets even from her.

This book kept me on edge throughout. There was danger everywhere for Ash and Julia and their families if their true loyalties were to be exposed. It is a page-turner for sure and I enjoyed it. You can tell the research that went into this book and I appreciate the author for all the hard work to not only show me a side of the war I had not thought about but to also weave it into an enjoyable story of convection and love. An early copy of Spies of the Civil War book 4 was received through Wild Heart Books. These are my own opinions and were in no way solicited.

Streams of Courage is a Civil War tale of bravery under pressure. Ash and Julia had many battles to face both internally and externally in their attempts at a happily ever after.

I struggled to get into the story with the first few chapters. There were a lot of characters and many time jumps, but after the story smoothed out, I was immersed deeper and deeper into Ash and Julia’s troubles. The climax has me holding my breath and worried about the characters.

The espionage angle added such a unique flair to this story. I don’t remember ever hearing of a Civil War book focused on a spy and I enjoyed following Ash’s adventures.

Sandra included a wealth of historical detail that highlighted the setting. The research that went into this book was profound, absolutely incredible.

Streams of Courage is a story perfect for anyone looking for history in their fiction, a good plot, faith content, and a clean romance.

Streams of Courage (Spies of the Civil War Book 4) by Sandra Merville Hart has a heartbreaking twist to this story. Since living in the Southeastern US I always thought of the Confederacy losses in the Civil War I never thought of the prejudice against those who understood the wrongness that caused the war. This is a war that torn not only the country apart but families and communities too.

Julia Dodd and Ashburn Mitchell learn firsthand what their beliefs costs. However, no one in the South is unaffected. A riveting story of standing against the current flood of social pressure, survival in a war-torn world and finding comfort from the Lord.

The fourth in a series that I had not read previously, this reads well as a stand-alone. I was impressed with the historical research that went into the writing of this book. Well-done but also made the history come to life through the individual characters’ experiences.

When I read a Sandra Merville Hart novel, I know I can count on historical accuracy, likable and relatable characters, and a page-turner story. Every. Single. Time. Book four in her Spies of the Civil War series, Streams of Courage, met all my expectations. Set in Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1861, the events surrounding that state’s switch from Union support to Confederacy support come alive on the page. (This is just one of those historical facts I’d not known before reading this book.) Ms. Hart can be trusted to bring the best-researched, action-packed stories filled with characters who display every imaginable emotion. Always excellent writing with a story I cannot put down. Can you tell I love reading her books? I surely do hope so.
Highly recommended.

In full disclosure, I received an advance reader copy of this book with no expectations. The opinions and words here are my own.

I have adored the Spies of the Civil War series from Sandra Merville Hart. I was excited to have the opportunity to read the fourth installment, Streams of Courage. It was far from being a disappointment. I loved getting to know the main characters, Ash and Julia. I thought their story was wonderful. I thought the author perfectly portrayed what so many went through during the American Civil War. I thought it was a great novel to read set this era in history.

Streams of Courage gets five plus stars from me. I highly recommend for fans of clean historical romance. I look forward to reading the fifth addition of Spies of the Civil War series, River of Peril.

I thought this was a good book about what people would have went through during the Civil War. I liked how the author showed us the unrest that was at home and how hard it would have been to keep your loyalties a secret if you didn’t agree with your home state’s decision regarding the Union. I also like how she showed what people were willing to sacrifice to try to bring a swift end to the war. I liked how courageous both Ash and Julia were as they did what they could to help the Union but still keep their families safe while living in Mississippi. I also liked the romance between Ash and Julia and how the author showed that good things still could happen in the midst of war.

Overall, I enjoyed this story; however, it was so slow, I just could not get into it. I was just plodding through most of it, thinking eventually it's going to pick up, I just never got there. I'm not sure if it's because I'm so used to fast-paced suspense, or what it was. I loved the characters, they were very well written, and easy to understand. I could put myself in Julia's shoes. I could imagine how I would feel going through the things she went through. I can imagine the anxiety I would have being a Union supporter in a Southern state surrounded by friends and neighbors who if they knew I was a Unionist would persecute me. I'm sure a lot of people would absolutely love this book; however, I just could not get into it like I normally do. I personally would give this one a 3 out of 5 stars, because I did like the characters, and the story line was good, just slow and not my cup of tea. If you love books set in the Civil War, or a simple romantic story, this could be a good fit for you.

Wow! On the edge of my seat through the whole book. I love the characters especially Ash. He is brave, sweet, and doesn’t let his injury keep him from being all he can. A sweet romance thats clean and kept me clinging to the pages. So much to love about this story, I enjoyed the plot and how Julia’s family wouldn’t leave. With the war raging and the description of the ships canons blasting bombs I could smell the gun powder and feel the earth shake. With all the tension with Ash making spy runs, I was white knuckling the book and felt my heart racing with each one. An enjoyable story that easily earns 5 stars!
Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

An amazing detailed story about the Civil War with the spotlight on Vicksburg MS. Like so many people during that time period, they were torn between two sides. How do you cope when you live in the South but feel the North is right. There were no easy answers. Ash is in that position when he feels led to spy for the Union Army. Julia is in love with Ash and her sympathies also lie with the Union. Perilous times. One false step and you are faced with the consequences of treason. This is a great story detailing the emotions and social intricacies of that time and I was drawn into the story from the beginning. I am looking forward to reading more novels by this author.

Deeply realistic story of life when the Civil War started, in a town along the Mississippi. Once a Union leaning city, they joined the Confederacy, leaving loyalties tied. Social struggles, then war and loss made conflict between friends. So well told, you're there.

Stand for what you believe in, no matter the cost.

A vivid story of life in the South during the War, especially for spies. I was reminded of the turmoil they must have felt; they loved their state but must follow their conscience. I could never imagine living under the circumstances within these pages.

There is happiness, heartache, joy, laughter, mourning, tears, dreams shattered and dreams fulfilled. A expertly told story that I enjoyed very much.

I received a complimentary copy and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.

This book four in the series. It is book about a spy in Vicksburg from May 1861 to September 1862. It is also a clean love story. There are 2 more books coming. I love the ending for a couple of reasons. This is a tale that clearly shows that God’s allows love to work out even when others are against it. Yes, there is a sad part to to the story as it is about war. I have enjoyed all the books in this series and am looking forward to reading the next 2.

My favorite genre would be historical fiction. This is an awesome story about the city of Vicksburg, Mississippi during the years 1861-1862 of the Civil War. The story line is captivating and the courage and resilience of the characters is remarkable, and unfortunately true to what the people of Vicksburg actually experienced. It is a well researched story with wonderful characters and a sweet, sweet romance.
