DK Broadwell is happy you found his bio. His debut novel RUTHLESS SKY is about everything he loves and knows- flying, spaceflight, medicine, and about everything he loves but doesn't understand- women, bureaucracies, his fellow humans.
He has spent a lifetime helping NASA, astronauts, pilots and his family get through life. He would have been an astronaut, but his eyes are too weak. In these trying times, please encourage me to write something else. Remember Broadwell's corollary of scientific progress- "If it can be done, someone will do it, no matter how stupid or dangerous it is."

I want to start this review by saying that I am not an expert when it comes to sci-fi novels, and that while I might not have enjoyed this, other people more familiar to the genre probably would.

We are in the 1990s, an alternative future where space travels are more common. The Intrepid is sent to space with a crew of 5 people, only one of them being a woman. Unfortunately, something goes wrong from the very beginning, and because of a problem with a wing, the crew is suddenly stranded without a way to go back home. There will be people from Earth trying to help them, and another shuttle will be sent to rescue them, though Cat and Hayes will find themselves separated from the rest of the crew and in an even worse situation than before. Their time alone in space will transform their friendship into romance, but neither of them knows whether they will be able to make it back home or not.

Plot-wise, the story reminded me of The Martian. As I said, I haven't read much sci-fi, and I only saw a few movies, but it was impossible not to notice the similarities. The author knows what they're talking about; I don't know if it's because of their own experience or if they did lots of research, but you can definitely tell. While this can be great for people who read sci-fi regularly, it might cause readers who are new to the genre to not enjoy the story as much because they have no idea what the characters are talking about the entire time. It was the second for me, but I do think other people might enjoy it and appreciate it a lot more than I did.

When it comes to the characters, unfortunately I wasn't a big fan of the "MC". I use "" because Cat is not the only character in this book who gets their own POV, but she definitely feels like the main one. She wasn't very likeable, and her whole personality was a bit insufferable. But again, my own personal opinion. I just feel like I wouldn't recommend this book to other women who like strong female characters. The romance between her and Hayes wasn't really there for me, but that comes from reading a lot of romance books in the past. I just need a lot more chemistry between characters before I can "feel" they are really in love with each other.

In general, this book wasn't bad. It was a quick read, and somehow interesting when it came to all the different NASA dynamics, but it wasn't really for me. I decided to give it 3.5 stars going towards 4 because I believe other people will enjoy this more than I did.

D.K. Broadwell's "Ruthless Sky" takes readers on a wild journey through space, set in an alternate 1989 where NASA's ambitions know no bounds. From the wreckage of a catastrophic shuttle launch emerge astronauts Cat and Hayes, grappling not only with the aftermath but also with the vastness of the cosmos.

The novel delves into thrilling themes, offering glimpses into the intricacies of space exploration with the backdrop of political tensions too. However, while Broadwell's exploration of these themes is exciting, some avenues feel underdeveloped, leaving readers yearning for more depth.

One thing's for sure: Broadwell doesn't shy away from details. He's clearly done his research. However, this meticulousness may alienate readers new to the genre, requiring a certain level of familiarity with space concepts to fully appreciate the narrative.

The romance supblot also didn't sit with me fully. It lacked the spark that ignites the rest of the story. It's a missed opportunity in an otherwise stellar narrative.

In the grand scheme of things, 'Ruthless Sky' emerges as a strong debut, showcasing Broadwell's potential as a force to be reckoned with in the realm of space fiction. I hope to see more!

Ruthless Sky by D.K. Broadwell captivates the gripping tale of survival set aboard a realistic space shuttle in the late 1980s. Despite the tension of a malfunctioning shuttle, two astronauts find themselves entangled in an unexpected romantic turn. The novel provides intricate details about NASA, space travel, and the Russian space program, offering a captivating look into the challenges of space exploration and showing how people can overcome tough situations, even in the vastness of space.

Broadwell effectively presents the complexities of space travel in an easily understandable manner. This book is intriguing even for those who are not naturally drawn to space exploration because it reads more like a compelling historical narrative. The author skillfully builds suspense as Cat and Hayes encounter significant challenges in space, showcasing their resilience in navigating NASA's obstacles and political dilemmas. Broadwell effectively depicts their heartwarming love tale, providing a feeling of hopefulness in both their existence and a significant element within the narrative. Although it includes a stereotypical love story subplot, they feel new and exciting in the setting and genre of this story. The story goes beyond just space exploration, delving into themes of human drive and emotions. Broadwell's stories captivate readers with a mix of factual and fictional elements, drawing from the author's experience working alongside NASA. The characters are progressively developed, and the plot develops in a well-organized manner, demonstrating Broadwell's masterful story writing. The book explores aviation as well as the depths of the human spirit and the motivations behind perseverance. Another great aspect of the story is the use of humor and characters that readers can connect with, which enhances the narrative. Moreover, the conclusion and the depiction of the daunting challenges faced by the astronauts are also particularly commendable. In conclusion, Ruthless Sky is a riveting journey into Space Shuttle missions; with its engaging characters, richly imagined world, and thrilling plot, this book is a must-read for fans of realistic sci-fi adventures.

"Ruthless Sky" by D.K. Broadwell offers a thrilling plunge into the depths of space, where love and survival collide against the backdrop of political tension and technological prowess. Set in an alternate 1989 where NASA's ambitions soar unhindered, the novel follows astronauts Catherine Riley and Hayes Bartlett as they confront the aftermath of a catastrophic shuttle launch.

Broadwell's background as a former NASA flight surgeon enriches the narrative with technical authenticity, immersing readers in the intricacies of space exploration. His adept handling of the characters' plight amidst a failing mission is commendable, weaving a tale that is both gripping and emotionally resonant.

However, while the novel excels in its technical detail and high-stakes drama, some aspects feel underexplored. The political landscape of the Cold War era, though tantalizingly hinted at, could have been delved into more deeply to add further depth to the story. Additionally, while the romance between Cat and Hayes adds a tender layer to the narrative, it occasionally veers into cliché territory, detracting from the otherwise engaging plot.

Overall, "Ruthless Sky" stands as a testament to Broadwell's skill as a storyteller, offering readers a compelling blend of science fiction and romance. Despite its occasional missteps, the novel succeeds in delivering a heart-pounding adventure that will leave readers on the edge of their seats. Fans of realistic space exploration fiction will find much to enjoy in this debut work, and it leaves ample room for future exploration in the rich alternate history it presents.

Thank you
Happy Reading

Ruthless Sky is a great debut sci-fi novel

I love when I find a new science fiction novel that is a great read, and I lucked out again with Ruthless Sky by DK Broadwell. The novel is set in the year 1989 of an alternate history where the space shuttle Challenger had a successful mission. NASA continued to push the USA space program ahead at full speed without the real life 32-month halt following the explosion of the shuttle.

NASA is launching the space shuttle Intrepid; however, complications after the launch, leaves the astronauts staring death in the eye. After a partially failed rescue mission from a combined USA and Soviet Union effort, the book follows our two main characters, Catherine Riley and Hayes Bartlett, as they grow close while choosing to fight and live rather than wallow in the misery of their situation.

The book also briefly explores the political side of the space shuttle program in the waning days of the Cold War. I actually could've gone with more of this aspect, as I feel that was an interesting angle that was only touched on.

This is Broadwell's first novel, and this is right up his alley. His knowledge as a former NASA flight surgeon in the space shuttle program bleeds through every page. Broadwell does a great job explaining technical, space shuttle-specific details in a way that makes them accessible to the layman.

I don't know what Broadwell has planned for a future novel, but I would love a continuation of this alternate history.

Ruthless Sky catapults readers into a gripping adventure where love and survival intertwine amidst the vastness of space. D.K. Broadwell, drawing from a deep understanding of space, crafts a captivating storyline that grips readers from start to finish.

However, their resilience emerges as their greatest asset against faltering NASA efforts and simmering political tensions. A tender romance blossoms admist the chaos offering a ray of hope as they face an impending doom.

The book transcends genre boundaries, exploring themes of human determination and the depths of the human heart. Broadwell's ability to sustain reader engagement with realistic yet fictional scenarios is truly remarkable.

Ruthless Sky stands as a testament to the enduring power of love and the resilience of the human soul in the face of overwhelming challenges.

Had a hard time putting it down

Ruthless Sky is a captivating novel that I found hard to put down. The author writes a realistic space novel with well developed characters and a quick paced plot. Although my knowledge in regard to science is limited, Broadwell does an excellent job of explaining the details of space travel in a way that anyone can understand.

The story is about a space mission gone awry and how the astronauts deal with tense situations. In addition, the author includes politics and the beauracracy that are often involved in these settings.

This book is fascinating even if you don't generally enjoy books about space. It is more like a historic novel taking place during the late 1980s/ early 1990s.

Set in the late 80's, this book tells the story of astronauts stuck in space after an explosion on their space shuttle. From the very first page, Broadwell masterfully weaves a tale of intrigue, suspense, and heart-pounding action that kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire journey.

The characters are richly developed, each with their own depth and complexities, making it impossible not to become emotionally invested in their fates. The way magic and technology intertwine in this universe is nothing short of spectacular.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a thrilling and thought-provoking read!

Going into this book, I was skeptical at first.
Most debut outer space books (sci-fi especially) tend to have exhausting plotlines with far too much filler. I was absolutely delighted to find this book, while it did include a stereotypical love story subplot, to be very refreshing for this genre! After the first few chapters, I couldn't put the book down!
Although this story is fictious, you truly feel like you're getting an insider look at space flight and NASA due to the author having worked for them.
This book never gives you a break from suspense, you'll always be on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next.
You don't want to skip out on this book!

A lot of this exciting novel takes place on a broken space shuttle, and the male and female main characters are NASA astronauts. The details of life aboard the shuttle make you feel like you are stuck there with them, and the cold war intrigue, science, and NASA backstory feel like a mix of Tom Clancy and Andy Weir. Without spoiling anything, there is also plenty of romance to be found. Once I started, I had to see how it ended ASAP.

A cheesy space novel littered with cliches yet enjoyable. A space mission gone wrong, nasa is prepared to let the crew die without attempting rescue. A group of nonconforming employees send up a rescue chirp of supplies. We have Russians, propaganda, space sex, diamonds, space babies and a sex tape.
The author uses acronyms throughout the book most likely unknown to readers.
I do want to add a few more space books to my tbr after this one.

Sci-fi meets historical fiction

A very realistic space adventure; you almost forget this is fiction. Fast paced, full of suspense, you get a good look at how vicious life in space can be.

Not a very well written book by sci-fi standards. If you are looking for space problem solving books like The Martian, it’s unlikely this is going to scratch your itch. Many characters felt under developed, and some parts of the story felt rushed.

Basically The Martian but not as entertaining. I enjoyed it, but the ending felt anticlimactic after drawn out middle chapters.

D.K Broadwell excellently portrays the realities of space travel while interspersing fictional elements to make the story relatable. The character development was a standout theme of this novel for me. I enjoyed watching both Cat and Hayes grow and develop as their situation lost in space worsened. The romance between the two characters reminded me of Passengers. It was rather touching and entertaining, but it didn't come off as cheesy, although one might have expected that. I imagine that this book would appeal not only to space buffs, but romance and sci-fi fans as well. I like it.

I love a good sci-fi romance, and this book certainly fit the bill. It is well-thought-out, isn’t overly heavy on the sci-fi lingo, and is full of suspense. I really enjoyed it. It even has a bit of humor and the characters are very believable.

I also loved the ending and the whole astronaut concept. But I didn’t enjoy the adult content, however. Anyway, I think anyone who enjoys romance in a sci-fi setting will drool over this book.
