"It’s nice to finally meet you, Jemima," Rebecca Sheridan says, her voice soft. I force a smile, and tug at the hem of my faded black dress. I need this job so badly, but I can’t let her see that. Just like she can’t know I have no money, that this isn’t my real accent. That most of my friends are gone… or dead.

I say yes when she offers me the role. I'll soon learn Rebecca's polished smile masks secrets far darker than my own.

Every day I rehearse. I spend hours running lines with the other lead, whose vacant expression and tearful outbursts make me uneasy. I try to ignore how Rebecca cuts me down then builds me up. How the others stop talking when I enter the room.

Why am I really here? Am I just a pawn in some twisted game?

No. There’s no way she can know who I really am.

What I did. What I'm capable of…

Right?

A breathtaking page-turner about secrets, lies and what really goes on behind closed doors. Perfect for fans of Anatomy of a Scandal, The Girl Before and The Silent Patient.

Being more inclined to hiding behind a screen, Becky has always been fascinated by the psychology of actors - just why do they put themselves in the spotlight and face all that competition and rejection? To find out, Becky started acting classes and has recently taken part in her first play - which was as terrifying as expected.

You know when you finish a book and you feel a great satisfaction that it was a great read and more than worthy of your investment?…this was that

Based around Jemima, an out of work RADA trained actor as she tries to succeed at auditions and then when she does it is the start of a very tangled web of lies, deception, secrets and well to say more would give it away….

I loved Jemima, her quirky attitude and brutal determination and as always love a character who says one thing and then in their mind says another

It is exceptionally well and reader friendly written and invited me into this often cruel, sometimes mysterious and dark humoured world of acting, theatre and the folk who ‘live it’

Without doubt one of my top reads this year and more than look forward to reading more of this talented authors work

ARC audiobook provided in exchange for an honest review.

For a single narrator, Josie Charles did a fantastic job with this story! She covers all the characters well and I was always able to tell which character was speaking. I liked that this story took place in London and New York and focuses mainly on theatre actors. There were some twists I predicted but others that I never saw coming. I really enjoyed the way it ended and would recommend to anyone who likes psychological thrillers with unreliable narrators!

This was a dark and atmospheric psychological thriller. I found it to be a slower paced story that was incredibly intriguing and peaked my curiosity. The audiobook narrator delivered a superb performance. Her voice was the perfect fit for the character.

The plot involves a young struggling actress desperately searching for her big break. She is alone in the world, having escaped her alcoholic mother and abandoned by her father. She is used to making her own way in the world. After randomly getting invited to audition for a two actor play being put on by a famous director and successfully getting the supporting role, she is ecstatic. However, the director is elusive and strange, and as time goes on, she's not really sure what she got herself into.

I will emphasize that the pacing is very slow and there is no clear direction in which it appears to be going. However, this is part of its charm. I was impatiently wanting to know where the plot was leading. I was completely drawn into the crazy.

As the MC became more unhinged, the suspense grew. I literally couldn't stop listening. The reveals at the very end were explosively satisfying!

A gracious thank you to #NetGalley for an audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

I was really interested in the premise of the book and was excited to read it. But it moved really slow in the beginning and didn’t read like a psychological thriller at all. It was more of a literary book explaining the theatre and off broadway life. I stuck with it though to see if it would pick up. The ending though was very messy and seemed to end quickly. I would have loved if there were twists throughout.

Well, I was a bit confused about this book, I thought I started reading a thiller, but it was more a drama/general fiction until I read about 90% of the book. Then, I got to the twists/truth coming out. The ending saves the book, in my opinion. It was really slow burn for the most part about Jemima's quest to get a role in plays.

I have a lot of thoughts on this one, but I will keep it concise.

This one had me mildly confused because I knew the book was a thriller, but it didn't give me the thriller vibes until much later when the books twists started unravelling and not in a great way.

Now, it is an extremely slow read, so you will need a lot of patience to read it. I think the only reason this book wasn't a complete winner for me, was because the ending is very rushed. If there were small twists thrown in as the book went on maybe I could rate the book higher.

An enjoyable read surrounding theater and the people it takes to make the story come to life. Definitely appealed to me as I am involved in that world, though much more casually. The characters were brutal to each other trying to get ahead.
My only complaint is that the ending felt a bit rushed, not as complete as I would have liked.

Great narrator as well!

This is a great convoluted novel that leads into Alexander's 2nd one. This one focusses on Jemima who lives on her boat, Seagrass and works at a mobile coffee van with Ben until she gets her first "break" into acting. She goes to a party one evening where one of the men falls off the balcony and ends up in intensive care. Alternating between "then" and "now," the novel details her rise to fame as well as what one might do to achieve it, regardless of the cost to someone else!

Spotify said this was an “unputdownable” psychological thriller and guess what it’s not that. More like drama with some mystery. I kept waiting for it to be psycholocally thrilling. The ending shows glimpses of that but overall blaaaah.

Thank you to netgalley, dreamscape media and storm publishing for an ARC in exchange for my honest review. I LOVED this dramatic psychological thriller! I listened to the audiobook version and the narrator was superb. The TWIST at the end was not expected at all and had me FLOORED! The only thing I did not like was that I feel like the conclusion didn’t tidy things up. I wish the author had told us what happened to Jemima. It left me wanting...

Jemima is a starving new actor, graduate at a prestigious performing arts program, RADA. She gets her big break when she is called for a private, mysterious audition for the exclusive, well known Sheridan Productions and is selected as co-star with a famous movie actress. Jemima becomes increasingly worried during rehearsals that her co-star will ruin the play, therefore, her big opportunity due to her bad acting, forgetting lines and her drug habits.

I loved Jemima and found her to be very likable. She is the black sheep among the many rich and privileged players, just trying to make it big.

Many secrets, a couple of mysterious deaths, backstabbing betrayal and a great big TWIST! Any thriller reader will enjoy this dark engrossing read!

Jemima Evans is ‘resting’. Despite attending numerous auditions, she is still to make a big break. Offers of readings are now becoming few and far between, and Jemima feels that her agent Elle is losing interest. However, when the offer of a casting with highly respected and extremely influential executive producer Rebecca Sheridan is up for grabs, Jemima is prepared to go to any lengths to prove she is perfect for the role.

This was very much a slow action book. It took a while to get going, then the ending was all of a rush.

Unpleasant characters throughout, with a fairly convoluted plot. The insights into ‘luvvie’ land were interesting and the lengths that the characters went to were very believable.

Not a totally unexpected denouement, it was always a case of who to trust! The shocking climax promised in the blurb never quite materialised.

An easy read, just needed the action to be more forthcoming.

Thank you NetGalley and Storm.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.

Someone Like You is a gripping psychological thriller. The story follows Jemima, a struggling actress who lands a role in a play directed by the mysterious and manipulative Rebecca Sheridan. But Jemima soon realizes that nothing is as it seems, and that she is caught in a web of lies, secrets, and murder.

The author does a great job of creating suspense and tension throughout the book, as well as developing complex and flawed characters. Jemima is a sympathetic and relatable protagonist, who has a dark past that haunts her. Rebecca is a cunning and ruthless antagonist, who has a hidden agenda and a twisted mind. The other characters are also well-written and have their own secrets and motives.

The plot is fast-paced and full of twists and turns, and the story explores themes such as identity, deception, betrayal, revenge, and obsession. The writing style is engaging and easy to follow, and the dialogue is realistic and witty. The setting of the theatre world adds an extra layer of drama and intrigue to the story.

Someone Like You is a highly recommended read for fans of psychological thrillers that will keep you reading. It is a stunning debut by Becky Alexander, who is a talented and promising author. I look forward to reading more of her books in the future.

Rounded up from 4.5

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Jemima (Gemma) Evens is a struggling actor in London, it's been 2 years since she attended RADA (the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art) and is still yet to land a role and have her acting career take off. Eventually Jemima lands a role and everything changes. But is it for the better? This role is not what she'd hoped for but it's better than nothing right?

I have never read anything where the story centres around the theatre world, so this is a very fresh and different perspective for me which I LOVED. It is set in 3 Acts similar to a play (I guess), which I think is a nice touch.
The whole story has an unsettling feel to it, you don't know which characters to trust and what significance they will have in the story later on which is exactly what you want in a psychological thriller.

I thoroughly enjoyed Jemimas story, and appreciated the representation of LGBTQIA+ characters.

It's probably worth checking the trigger warnings for some as there is mention of overdose, and rape.

Someone Like You follows the story of Jemima, a struggling wannabe actress who is thrilled to be cast in an upcoming play alongside one of TVs hottest stars. But things don't quite go to plan and her co-star ends up dead, meaning Jemima's path takes a different turn.

I enjoyed this audiobook and thought it started really strong; I was hooked from the beginning and couldn't wait to see how it all played out. It tailed off a little in the middle, but I did enjoy the ending .

I can't say that I particularly 'liked' any of the characters, but there were some that I loved to hate and I thought they were well written. A great read for anyone with an interest in what goes on behind the scenes of the acting world of those who like an unreliable narrator.

My thanks to NetGalley and the Publishers for sending me this ALC in return for an honest review.

Jemima is trying to make it in the acting world. She just can’t catch a break. So, when she has finally been selected to perform for a different type of show. She jumps at it, even though her inner voice is telling her something is wrong.

Jemima is struggling. She wants this job badly, she needs this job badly. She thinks there is no one who knows her and her past. But the longer she is working for this show and Rebecca, Jemima begins to believe her life is in danger. But why? Oh the secrets!

Now, this tale is a bit slow in places and it’s a bit choppy. But, it is entertaining and kept me listening.

This story is narrated by Josie Charles. Very good job!

I have never read anything from this author. I really enjoyed the writing. I was hooked from the beginning and need to know what was going to happen. It was very interesting learning about acting and small producers as well. I thought that part would have been boring but honestly it was packed with so much drama I hardly noticed. I wasn't expecting the twist at the end. Since I read a lot of these types of books that is really hard to do. I just felt like the twist was hard to guess.

A new-to-me author who provided a super engaging story that had me wanting to read chapter after chapter.
In the theatre world, it’s all about who you know and what you’re willing to do to make a name for yourself. Back stabbing, toxic relationships, and murder are just a few ways to accomplish that.
Excited to see if the author will write more thrillers in the future!

2.5 ⭐️

First off the bat, I definitely echo what other reviewers have said: this is not a thriller. I think the book would have a better reception if it was marketed as it is, which is probably fiction/drama, and it would also benefit from having the author actually flesh out a SA commentary and how fucked up the entertainment (especially for actors) is.

"Every day I rehearse.

What I did. What I'm capable of..."

Another problem is that the synopsis presented is not at all what the book is actually about, it only incorporates the truth that there is a shady producer and the main character doesn't feel safe in some situations.

For some reason I was really fascinated by this right from the start! It doesn't start with any massive bang or anything frantic but there's just a sense of unease from the oust that kept growing the whole way through. You know something isn't right hut you just don't quite know what and it's that desire to find out that kept me invested. It is quite a slow burn, things are just slowly drip fed to the reader but the tension and suspense and build perfectly. I'm not sure I'd class it as a thriller as such but it was certainly an entertaining and captivating story

SOMEONE LIKE YOU by Becky Alexander narrated by Josie Charles

NARRATION
Becky Alexander's psychological thriller, "Someone Like You," is skillfully brought to life by Josie Charles' compelling yet subtly emotional narration. Charles successfully captures the nuances of class and gender differentiators as she embodies various characters and vividly portrays Alexander's versions of London, Cornwall, and New York. Despite occasional slowdowns in the story, Charles' narration maintains an engaging quality that keeps listeners hooked.

SUMMARY
After graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), Jemima Evans is still struggling to get her first professional acting break. So she spends her days working in a coffee van, going to auditions, and living in cramped conditions on a tiny houseboat called the Seagrass. While her classmates seem to be working, she’s still trying to land a role. So when she gets an audition for a play that will be produced by Sheridan Productions, Jemima is thrilled.

However, success doesn’t look anything like she imagined. There’s something strange about the whole affair. The legendary Rebecca Sheridan's involvement which at first seemed so promising, sets off a weird string of events leading from the audition and casting to the production. As Jemima delves into the two-person play called "Poison," she realizes that nothing is quite what it seems. Was Rebecca the unseen voice playing the second part during her audition? Why did Rebecca cast her in the play? Why would a big star like Olivia Goldsmith take the demanding role last minute just because Rebecca asked?

But her big break is finally in sight, so Jemima pushes all the questions aside and puts everything she has into making the most of the opportunity But she’ll soon learn that what Rebecca wants from her is much more than a good performance.

THOUGHTS
Reading the synopsis of SOMEONE LIKE YOU sets expectations for a novel that will dig deep into uncovering Jemima Evan’s secrets but the reality is much different. The disconnect between the promotional material and the actual narrative is stark. The novel fails to adequately address pivotal questions about Jemima's identity, accent, and connections to the other characters. The psychological thriller promised by the synopsis is hindered by a slow setup, with crucial details either briefly mentioned or omitted entirely. Jemima's assertion that "there's no way she can know who I really am" remains vague and unexplored.

The narrative primarily revolves around Jemima's self-doubts and her struggle to trust those around her. Internal monologues dominate the story, becoming repetitive as Jemima obsesses over Rebecca Sheridan, the state of the play "Poison," her co-star Olivia, and other encounters. Jemima's lack of curiosity, such as not researching Rebecca or Greg before forming relationships, feels unrealistic in a world where ‘googling’ is a verb and every bit of information is easily accessible.

In the cutthroat theatre environment, the characters in SOMEONE LIKE YOU lack sympathy, with Jemima's likability diminishing as the story progresses. The ending fails to elicit any care or even interest in Jemima's fate or true identity.

RECOMMENDATION
3 Stars SOMEONE LIKE YOU. Josie Charles deserves 4 stars for her narration which draws the listener into the story and brings it to life. Sadly, the novel itself is convoluted with unlikeable characters, a repetitious style, and an ending that destroys whatever goodwill the rest of the story may have engendered.

Thank you to Netgalley and Storm Publishing for access to this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Gemma “Jemima “Evans is an actress who went to one of the most influential acting schools in London RADA and has been trying to make it big since graduation when she gets a call from her agent to attend a casting that when she shows up it’s only her and someone behind a two-way mirror eventually she gets the part but that isn’t the end of the strange events that happened from an accidental death to a questionable one and they all evolve around one person Rebecca Sheridan the owner of the production company who is putting on the play Poison that Jemima is starring in. This is what begins Jemima’s trip into the underhanded world of theater back stabbers and so much more. I didn’t like Jemima for more than one reason the first she saw nothing wrong with stealing and I didn’t find her personality was as defined and I couldn’t get a hold to what kind of person she really was. I mean she wanted to be an actress yet she seemed so standoffish at one time and at another time she sleeping with much older people she couldn’t even decide if she liked or not.… It was just all confusing to me. I get why she did it but I didn’t find her likeable this book almost felt like a long joke whose punchline was kind of funny but not worth all the narrative before to be honest I found the first part of the book way more interesting than the rest of the book. I wouldn’t consider this a Mystery or a Thriller but more of a fiction book with dramatic moments I found the people in this book to be self absorbed clueless as to real life Although it was interesting to read I got tired of listening to Jemima talk about going to Rada and bringing up Olivia in the end The big reveal wasn’t as big as I thought it was going to be for the slow burn narrative I had to sit through. As for the narrator I thought she did a great job a little wonky on the American accents but she did way better than I would’ve done and I’m American. I want to thank storm publishing, dreamscape select and net Galley for my free arc copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

Well, this was not at all what I expected. It is rated as a psychological thriller and unputdownable. I don’t agree.
It was a VERY SLOW start…and I don’t feel like that really changed until the last chapter or two of the book.
Then it felt like EVERYTHING happened ALL AT ONCE…very rushed ….

It is told thru the eyes of Jemima. She is an actor (actress) who has not been cast for a while. At this point in her life, she is willing to do ANYTHING to get a part… And so, basically, that’s what she does…

We see the theatre through her eyes…and all the nonsense and craziness that goes along with actors, directors and cast. BUT, I’d have to say, if this is how it is in real life, I’d never go into acting!

That being said, she interviews for a part, and will really do whatever it takes to get it. It goes off the rails from here (where she shares way too much of what goes on behind the scenes…if it’s actually for real…)

We watch the play and what happens to her and the other actors. The after parties. The drugs and drinking…

We watch her meet a man, and fall for him pretty quickly.
But then things around her start falling apart

They end up going from London to NYC and she interviews there for another play. Again, things just spiral out of control.

Could these things really happen? Not sure…
Are they believable? Not really. Not to me…

And then the ending comes (definitely not too soon for me), and it is just
R U S H E D!! Why??? I feel like the book dragged on forever…and then a hundred things happen all at once??!!?? Just crazy!

I liked the premise. I did not like (really) ANY of the characters…

Please let me know your thoughts if you have read it or read it in the future!

SPOILER ALERT!!

I asked for this ARC because the cover looks interesting and the description too. And I love psychological thrillers, they are by far my most favourite genre. When I read the description, for a moment I though that it was going to be written like If we were villain, but it was not and I was really happy for that.

This is the story of Jemina Evans, a British actress who is trying to get a chance in the theatre industry. With no friends (her best friends is living her best life in USA) in London, she is trying to get her big shoot with this new audition for a play. Of course she made trough the audition and get the role in the play, and she will be working with very important people in the industry.

During he whole book I had the feeling that something was going to happened, that all the characters where involved in order to do something to Jemina. From Ed, who technically attack her during the second audition, till Greg, who was basically dating her, and I was really enjoying it so much, but later on the book came a little slow and nothing excited happened until almost the end when I found out that it was only Rebecca, who want to revenge on her because of the death of the love of her life in hands on Jemina's brother Mark.

At the end, I did not expect much of this book, I was almost 90% of it and nothing extraordinary had happened yet so my surprise was huge when, at the last minutes I found out everything!!! It was something that I did not expect and that is why I like this genre the most, but I think the dead of this two characters at the end were really unnecessary. That only shows who selfish Jemina was and that she would do everything to success, but I think it did not help at all to the storyline.

This is a really good book, it is really well written, but I would not consider it as a thriller, maybe a drama or something, but I am not the expert here

Thanks to Becky Alexander, Storm Publishing and NetGalley for a gifted ARC of this book- my review is voluntary and my honest opinion.

Where to begin…this book follows one MC in her first bit of time out of drama school. Theater school? We also meet her ex, her agent, a producer, a new boyfriend, and her best friend, along with a handful of supporting characters.

One thing all of these people have in common is that they’re all out to get themselves ahead. Get the next hot break. One thing that differentiates Jemima is that she comes across as a total pushover who’s waiting for life to happen to her. Is she really this clueless? Is she a good actress who’s had a tough time? Is she going to make it as an actor? Is she emotionally damaged thanks to a bad home environment as a kid? Or is she just a delusional psychopath trying to hide in plain sight?

The answer is revealed…during the last chapter of the book. I enjoyed the gossipy first 90-95% of the book as a fluffy read about an insecure actress with self-esteem issues, where a small handful of bizarre coincidences happened in her sphere of life. Not much happened, and it felt very repetitive. I definitely understand that Jemima was a) broke, b) chasing her dreams, c) had a sht agent who didn’t seem to want to rep her anymore, and d) didn’t seem to take an active role in her life. For example, she kind of just fell into a relationship with someone she didn’t even like very much because it was convenient.

I was floored that the author waited until the book was 95% finished to link anyone and anything together. And truly, the last chapter is where anything was revealed. This book could have been easily 40% shorter and had the same impact.

Overall, I thought the writing was good and held my attention (tough to do with general fiction). The characters were unlikeable (well done). But the editing needed some work to tighten up the story and close the loose ends. This is NOT a thriller of any kind.

*Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the arc in exchange for my honest review.*

2.5⭐ rounded up.

Right off the bat, the writing didn't feel like my style. The writing wasn't bad, but it did have a more amateur feel to it.

Toward the beginning, someone gets injured while Jemima is around and she immediately starts acting guilty. She immediately left the party and went home and thought she couldn't Google about what just happened because the police might find out and she had to go to work that day because it would be suspicious if the police found out. I found it odd for her to immediately start acting like that when she claimed she wasn't even sure what happened or how the victim was. It wasn't a natural progression to the story in my opinion.

It started out so slow. I thought that I was reading a thriller. The cover and blurb made it sound suspenseful, but there was no suspense until the book was almost finished.

I found that I was confused most of the book. There wasn't enough information about the things that were happening for them to make even a little bit of sense to me so I was confused until the twist at the end, and even then I didn't quite get it.

The twist was okay and predictable. I didn't really care about it because I honestly hated every character in the book. There was no substance to them. Every single person was just trying to further their career, and it just felt so emotionless.

I think I may have enjoyed this book a little bit more if I wasn't led to believe this would be a suspenseful read. The whole time I was just waiting for something to happen.

Book Title: Someone like You
Author: Becky Alexander
Narrator: Josie Charles
Publisher: Dreamscape Select- Storm Publishing
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Pub Date: January 10, 2024
My Rating: 3.6 rounded up
Pages: 324

Story is told then and now and based in London and New York.

Jemimah has always wanted to be an actress. She was in Drama class as well as the Drama Club while in high school and then went on to study acting in college- a school known to produce famous actors. . She finally got a big break - it appears that the plays’ producer Rebecca Sheridan wanted her in the play. When she meets Rebecca in person Rebecca states
"It’s nice to finally meet you, Jemima,"
Jemimah was curious why she said ‘finally’
She then wondered – “Why am I really here? Am I just a pawn in some twisted game?
There’s no way she can know who I really am! What I did. What I'm capable of…

Right?

Audiobook narrator Josie Charles did a fantastic job performing ALL the characters- she made it clear which character was speaking. Her performance certainly made the story more enjoyable!

I am a big mystery/thriller fan so the mystery part of this story had me curious.
When Jemimah goes to New York the story s l o w s down and become more character based.
