Rocked by the alarming news of her natural father's death, swiftly followed by the disappearance of her half-brother, Taroniah begrudgingly returns to Marsea, the capital of Marland, at the urging of her natural father's cousin. Here, she finds herself facing many problems; uppity nobles, rebellious Kerns, foreign invaders, and, most importantly, locating the whereabouts of her half-brother, Patros, who is now the King of Marland. Most of these problems are not things her enormous magical power can easily rectify. Fortunately, there are some loyal people on her side who can help her resolve all these issues as she attempts to restore her brother to his throne.
I grew up in Sydney Australia but have lived on the Gold Coast, Australia for over thirty years. I have been many things over my life, courier driver, retail sales assistant, casino croupier, small business owner, a bankrupt former small business owner, a graphic designer, poker tournament operator and most recently an Uber driver. I have a marvellous wife and two great kids (both adults now) plus a border collie cross dog who thinks she's a human. I have always liked science fiction books, especially gung-ho space opera, time travel and alternate history genres. The first fiction book I read that I liked was Eagle of the Ninth and fist Science Fiction book I read and liked was Foundation by Asimov. My favourite authors, at the moment, are David Weber, Lois McMaster Bujold, Christopher Nuttall and Pam Uphoff. Weber writes the best space opera while Bujold is simply the best writer and Miles Vorkisgan an amazing character. Chris Nuttall rarely writes anything that is only so-so and his Schooled in Magic books are the best magic school series I have read so far. Pam Uphoff writes primarily a cross dimensional series called the Wine of the Gods with the Directorate stories offshoot. These are delightful, entertaining and often thought provoking books that I love. Chris Nuttall and Pam Uphoff inspired me to "have a go mate" and so I have. My first novel is On the Rocks, the first story of Arturo Sandus (Sanders) and his adventures as a Space Ship captain marooned on a primitive swords and sandals era planet. Sort of...
Mr. Rhodan has done it again! He has written a wonderfully readable ɓook that manages to be entertaining and familiar while building a world while evolving characters and a system of magic.
My issue with this series is the same throughout: Mr. Rhodan tells large chunks of the story through narration rather than dialog. In my perfect world, this is done in small doses, if at all. Alas, we do not live in Michelle's World, so other peoples' tastes and preferences must be accounted for.
Still, it is a lovely book in a lovely series. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes fmc's, fantasy, sword and sorcery, new worlds to explore, mythology, and the origin of deities. There is more, but you should read the books to make sense of my comments.
It's very much PG13, with hints of "camp followers" without any details. Same with the marital affection between the MC and her husband, which is reduced to public hugs and kisses. The violence is rather graphic, but also seen as a last resort, not a 1st choice. So it balances. Solid 8 Unicorns. Recommend to buy or borrow. Enjoy! 🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄
This 4th book in the Taroniah series is just as well written as the previous 3. Interesting plot, strong MCs, great twists and turns, etc. The editing seems to be getting better, too! Since the next book in the overall series is a Kyron story, which are also well written but less magic centric, I'll have to be patient & calmly wait for book 5 for my magic fix! Although Kyron had just left to start official magic training, so maybe his story arc will be mostly magical like Taroniah's last story, this one, was mostly martial. Doesn't matter since both books 8 & 9 are already done and in my library! Kyron, here I come! Yeah!
An enjoyable, but rather sedate read, there were several occasions when it looked like something was developing, but in the end it was all fairly low key. There was the build-up and the rescue of the young king, but this was followed by the constant retelling of the tale, which became a bit tedious. Once this was over with, we then start on another rescue mission which was even more ridiculous than the first one. This one even included a sword fight because hitting each other with swords is quieter than firing a lightning bolt through somebody's head?
Taroniah is diverted from her peaceful life by the news that her father is dead and her stepbrother is missing , she and her companions have numerous adventures righting the wrongs and in the process she comes into contact briefly with Ergania and the Black Dryarns who are attached to the royal forces , I wondered how Peter was going to get Taroniah and Kyron together , first step taken.
Taroniah is called back to Marland due to the Chaos created by the death of her father the King, and the kidnapping of her brother. Rescues, battle, intrigue, and surprise magical tricks ensue. I like the action, humor, intrigue, and underestimating Taroniah’s power. I look forward to another book.
Well written story, lots of fun sneaking around. Good conclusions with the minimum of mass bloodshed. The Goddess smiles after a horrible imprisonment. One more to come.
still a fun series that compels one to turn the pages, though this one started feeling a bit more repetitive, while the new revelations were to some extent of the better left at mysteries from past as they were more interesting that way
I enjoyed reading this book very much and I recommend this book to anyone who likes magic and adventure with lots of action. Interesting magical system.
