He was chasing a criminal. She was fleeing the law. Their worlds collide on a frozen highway.

Emily Brennan, the sole guardian of her gifted yet misunderstood brother, takes a drastic step to shield him from a society that manipulates his talents. To protect him, she's stolen designs from National Marine Dynamics and is now on the run.
Emily and Nate are two strangers brought together by an unexpected twist of fate. Their true identities could either drive them apart or unite them in a battle to save her brother and safeguard his work from criminal hands.
With danger imminent and trust scarce, could love bloom between these two unlikely allies?

USA TODAY bestselling author Maureen A. Miller worked in the software industry for fifteen years. She crawled around plant floors in a hard hat and safety glasses, hooking up computers to behemoth manufacturing machines. The job required extensive travel. The best form of escapism during those lengthy airport layovers became writing.
Maureen’s first novel, Widow's TALE, earned her a Golden Heart nomination in Romantic Suspense. After that, she became hooked on the genre. As hooked as she was, childhood fantasies still danced around in her head––little voices calling for her to write the young adult science fiction BEYOND series. To her, it was still romantic suspense…just on another planet!
Maureen is a wife. A mother of a crazy Corgi. A lover of mozzarella. And she truly believes there is a portal to outer space somewhere in her house.
This book was a great surprise, and I truly enjoyed it. I've been in a bit of a rut, reading books with great potential but not such a great delivery. I went in to Borrowed Time expecting more of the same. Instead, I got an evenly balanced romantic suspense. Yes, I had to suspend my disbelief frequently (12+ stories below ground, and it was secretive? Surely, such enormity was obvi when it was being built?), but fiction is fiction.
From the blurb, I expected Emily's brother Danny to be a minor; that he was a young adult employed by the same company as Emily was a surprise. Danny was a great character, though he seemed a little creepy at first with what appeared to be manipulation of his sister, but after a few more scenes with him, it sorted itself out for me.
Nate and Emily are adorable together, though there are times when their interactions were a little confusing. Fortunately, the dual perspective (third person) POV allowed for some light to be shed. Nate's willingness to at minimum give Emily and Danny the benefit of the doubt is lovely, and his near immediate understanding of Danny just plain awesome.
The chapters alternate viewpoints, and sometimes the shift is abrupt. I'm hugely grateful that the author doesn't shift POVs from paragraph to paragraph as that is terribly confusing. (Why? Why do some authors do that?) However, I do think that the shift could be handled more smoothly at times. Also, there are times when Nate or Emily are lost in thoughts from the past, and the shift back and forward in time is handled in successive paragraphs; perhaps a section break between memories and present day would have been helpful in keeping clarity at times.
I also loved that the suspense was even with the romance. Too often, one overshadows the other, and that especially doesn't work for me when it's romance top heavy. Here, there is a lot of action, which disallows for much canoodling, but the romance isn't lost either. Instead, it's conveyed through affectionate and protective gestures. I love that.

The underlying question central to this book is what would you do for family. In Emily's case that answer is something that will set into motion a story of love, family, friendship and corruption. Emily and Nate meet twice to much different results but ultimately are forced to work together to stop the money crazed controller for the company all three work for. Nate is a strong male lead capable of great strength and greater compassion. Emily has lived in the shadow of her creepy brother for a long time but with Nate something is different. They are two unlikely souls who find love and a place to belong.
I mentioned above the brother was creepy and he was always spouting off to Ben Franklin. He was supposed to be a sympathetic character but he was just unlikable until I read a line that reminded me of Scorpion. Danny had no EQ which as a Scorpion fan at least made him understandable if not liked. His only redeeming quality was he loved his sister even if he was bad at showing it.
The book was good and the villain aptly named Baracuda was rotten to the core. His evil kept our leading couple on the run and kept the book moving. This was my first experience with this author but it will not be my last. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Borrowed Time by Maureen A Miller PUBLISHER DESCRIPTION He was chasing a criminal. She was fleeing the law. Their worlds collide on a frozen highway.
Borrowed Time has a good world-building storyline that is easy to read. The characters are wonderful, and they have good chemistry. This story is an entertaining read with a happily-ever-after ending but is also filled with suspense and intrigue that make the reader want more. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. I highly recommend this book to all.
Reasons I enjoyed this book: Easy-to-read, Entertaining, Great world building, Happily Ever After, Informative, Inspirational, Page-turner, Realistic, and Wonderful characters
This is a very good story. Just a touch of sci-fi and a lot of running from the bad guys. All the characters are relatable except for Barcuda. He's a traitor and a criminal. This is good love story with loads of danger and suspense. The story flows smoothly and I was glued to the couch until I finished it.

I was surprised as to the amount action for a clean romance. And the action wasn't described as the usual "in slow motion." I like the heat between the main characters. The eccentric little brother was an excellent character, described in great detail of an autistic genius.

What starts out for Nate as a simple search and retrieve two staff who have stolen designs turns more complex when he gets to know Emily and her brother Danny. A fast paced action packed book full of twists and turns.
