An Unexpected Path

Rate this book
Sometimes unexpected paths lead to the best destinations.Highly sought after conflict photographer, relationship-averse Marley Cunningham thrives on adrenaline and the chaos of her nomadic life. But when the passion for her career starts to wane, she decides a hike far from the noise of life is the best way to shake the doubts from her mind and focus on what she wants. Spraining her ankle and being rescued by a handsome stranger and his pack of dogs is not part of the plan. Big-hearted, reclusive Bennett Morgan has spent his life with two main goals, play professional football for a few years and then pursue medicine. Shortly after his football career begins, a catastrophic diagnosis shatters both goals in one fell swoop. Feeling lost for the first time, he packs up his life and two dogs and returns to the home he couldn’t wait to leave. It’s in the shadow of his past that he finds joy in starting a dog sanctuary. After a rainstorm washes away the road to Bennett’s home, he is shocked to find Marley injured and alone on the secluded trail he walks the dogs on daily. From the moment she is hoisted onto his back, Marley is drawn in by Bennett’s kindness, strength and calm nature. Bennett quickly realizes that a bit more human connection in his life might not be such a bad thing, especially when that human is beautiful, courageous, complicated, Marley. Through the patience and care of Bennett, Marley begins to explore her feelings for not just her career but to her shock, the man who rescued her. Bennett, on the other hand, must decide if embracing the present with Marley is worth it, even if the future is uncertain.

Megan McSpadden

Megan McSpadden dreads talking about herself almost as much as seeing a snake on a hike. But she knows we all must do scary things so here it goes.

Megan lives in Hamilton, Ontario with her husband, two dogs, two cats and unruly garden. When not writing she can usually be found photographing families (don’t worry they pay her to do it), yelling at her beloved Toronto Maple Leafs, dreaming of travelling somewhere else or cooking something her husband will ask her to make again but knows she won’t because Megan doesn’t do recipes.

Megan enjoys writing romance that will make you laugh one minute only to cry the next. Don’t ask why because she doesn’t know.

Oh my goodness, this book! I loved absolutely everything about it. It was packed full of so many incredible quotes! I wish I would have taken the time to mark them with my Kindle but the truth is, I really didn't want to stop reading. I was too invested!

Oh Bennett and Marley 😭 From the moment they met I was swooning. Bennett is so dreamy! I don't want to give anything away by saying too much but just know, they are EVERYTHING!!

I snort laughed, cried, and grinned so big my face hurt afterwards. I even hugged my Kindle! Hehe!

Meg! You did it!! You wrote a book! An OUTSTANDING book with amazing characters and a stellar storyline! Congratulations!!

4.5 rounded up.

I REALLY enjoyed this debut Indie romance from new Booksta friend turned author, Megan McSpadden! While the premise was a bit insta-lovey for me (they fall in love after only a few days), the characters were so well-developed and felt so real I didn't even care.

Full of heart, humor and HEAT, this book sees conflict photographer Marley stranded after spraining her ankle and finding herself rescued by absolute cinnamon roll hero, Bennett who runs an animal rescue in his secluded country property. After days of forced proximity and bonding, Marley and Bennett each realize they might have found something special worth fighting for.

I loved the banter, the spice, the emotional depth, the meddling neighbors, ALL the animals, the disability rep (dyslexia, her ; chronic traumatic encephalopathy, him) and that the story didn't just end with an easy HEA but that the characters each grow and come to terms with their own issues before making their way back together.

In particular, I especially loved that a significant part of this story takes place in Syria and the author showcased what a complicated situation ongoing conflicts like that are and the importance of work like Marley's is in bringing attention to the real humans stuck dealing with it.

All in all I was truly impressed with this debut novel and I cannot wait for what Meg writes next! Highly recommended especially for fans of authors like Tarah DeWitt and Elodie Colliard. I voluntarily read and reviewed an early copy of this book and all opinions are my own.

Megan McSpadden's debut novel, An Unexpected Path, is truly remarkable. You are going to want to read this one, because she has created something really special.

I loved absolutely everything about it! I can tell that a lot of work and love went into this book. It's a love story that also tackles some deeper subject matter with incredible sensitivity. I couldn't put it down, I felt all the feelings and I spent majority of the time totally swooning!

Marley and Bennett, the two main characters, were basically perfect to me. I loved them together, but I also loved them separately. I refuse to give away spoilers because I want you to experience that magic for yourself, but please know that Bennett is book boyfriend perfection! The secondary characters in the story are also tons of fun!

And speaking of secondary characters, Yogurt the dog has my whole heart and I am trying to manifest him into my life! If you're a dog lover, Bennett's pack of dogs at his dog sanctuary are going to be your new favourite thing! Yogurt is the best of the best!

An Unexpected Path is out in the world on November 17th and trust me when I say you need to read this! You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll swoon and smile and it's sure to end up on your favourites shelf. Congratulations to the author on this debut! I'm so in love with this book!

Promising debut

This definitely felt like a debut, but one that showed a whole lot of promise. I loved the concept and some of the themes at play, as well as the multi-faceted characters and heartwarming love story. It's lighthearted one minute and heavy the next, with two characters who have their own hurts to work through. So there was absolutely a lot of good stuff going on, and I found it easy to binge. There were some smaller writing issues, but the pacing is what loses this the most points from me - the romance ended up feeling super instalovey, and the story tried to tackle too much for the page count. There were SO many things that could've been delved into deeper, and I would've enjoyed all of them. In the end, the heroine's career and self-doubt almost had more screen time than the couple's relationship, so I did struggle with believing the connection. But there was more good than bad - for sure - and I'd be interested in checking out more from the author in the future.

The story follows Marley, a conflict photographer who has lost her passion for the job. While out for a hike in the woods, Marley injures her ankle. She's rescued by a gruff, handsome stranger and his twenty-one dogs. Though Marley knows better than to trust a strange man, Bennett does seem to be a genuinely good guy - and only a sweetheart would provide a home for twenty-one dogs in need. Since a storm has left the road impassible, Marley has no other choice but to take shelter with Bennett. As the two strangers get to know each other better, they form a connection that neither anticipated. But Marley's job keeps her on the move, and she has no plans to slow down anytime soon.

This caught me on just the right day, and the vibes sounded right up my alley. I love a romance with two complex characters, and this certainly has that. Marley's high-pressure job has left her with PTSD, while Bennett struggles with headaches and neurological issues. I liked that they could bond over that and help each other see a path forward. I also really liked the uniqueness of Marley's career, which took the story in a direction I wasn't expecting. It's a quieter romance that could've used a little more chemistry and more focus on the couple. I enjoyed the beginning quite a bit, but then it became clear that the pacing was off. We spend a lot of time in Marley's headspace while she fights the bond, and I think they got together too easily in the end. She probably needed to do some groveling, though the romance was so underdeveloped that groveling would've felt out of place. Ultimately, I think smaller issues in the storyline had snowballed by the end, which is why I can't rate this any higher. But I did like a lot of it, and it's pretty solid for a debut.

I loved Marley and Bennett so freaking much. That’s it. That’s the review.

Jk.

Instant love is typically my least favourite trope, but forced proximity + caretaking + prolonged physical touch worked together here to create a believable relationship between these two incredibly well-developed characters. Every moment between them felt REAL, not forced, and I couldn’t help but fall in love right alongside them.

Megan is a fantastic writer and I was hooked from the first chapter. I read this one slowly, though, creeping toward the inevitable (Marley leaving Bennett’s house) because while I knew it was coming, I wanted to put it off as long as possible. 😂

Things that made me smile :
- Lloyd the calf
- Bennett’s list of things to tell Marley
- Simon forcing Marley to pull her head out of her ass (I say that lovingly!)
- every single scene with the Hore’s

Two scenes that will stick with me for a long time:
- Marley falling asleep outside with the pack using her as a pillow
- the night before Marley leaves once the road opens back up. I could FEEL the longing while I read it.

TLDR; I loved this book and I think you will, too.

This book has hands down one of my favourite first chapters ever. It immediately hooked me, you instantly fall in love with Marley and her witty inner monologue and there’s a pack of 21 dogs. Enough said.

Oh and you also get to meet the gem of all book boyfriends ….Bennett.

Bennett are Marley are two characters that not only make the reader feel lucky enough to really get to know well and can’t help but love, but they are characters that you know will live in your heart for life.

One of my favourite parts of this book is that you get to see their entire relationship form. You are there from their initial meeting, to some figuring each other out conversations, to getting to know each other more and more and then their realization and fear of this being something real. You get to witness it all.

The neighbour side characters are also loveable and hilarious. I couldn’t get enough of them.

And then there’s Yogurt - there’s so much love for all the dogs in this book but Yogurt is just so special.

This book is full of heart, laughs and love. I can’t recommend this one enough! OUT NOV 17th !

Now I know I’m not really the author’s target audience, I’m not a huge romance reader, I have a few romance authors that I love but for the most part I don’t gravitate towards romance books. So when I tell you that I loved this book know that I mean it, I really loved it! I was totally immersed in the story and the characters!

Bennett and Marley are both fantastic, well developed, and most importantly, believable characters and ooft their chemistry was off the charts!!

The first half of the book allowed me to fall in love with Bennett (and don’t even get me started on how much I love Yogurt!) but the second half of the book was when I felt I really got to know and love Marley and really understand her as a person and I think for that reason it was my favourite part of the book.

And that ending, ugh it was just perfection and I’m not ashamed to say I had happy tears in my eyes at the last line! Love, love, loved it!

4.5 stars. Loved Marley and Bennett and all the side characters! All the dogs are such an added bonus! I loved the writing style, it felt cozy, realistic and wasn’t cringey (which is my biggest issue with romances, so it’s worth pointing out) and the characters felt very mature.

If I didn't go into this book aware it was debut novel I wouldn't have believed it. This was such a great romance novel. Its always a sign of good writing when you love your MC's both as individuals and together. Which for me doesn't always happen. And I was totally hooked on the story, as well as both Marley and Bennett's journeys of self recovery.

The book may cover some heavy topics, but its also full of laughs. It struck such a great balance between the two and still full of heart warming feels. I loved the dog pack, especially Yogurt. And may we all have neighbours like the Hores!! Add in a great atmospheric setting - both in Canada and Syria - and I just couldn't put it down. Unrelated to the writing itself, can I also just saw how much I loved the little line drawings at the top of each chapter denoting who's POV we were reading. So fun and creative!

If you're looking for a great small town cozy romance with forced proximity, where he falls first then this is the book for you! Did I mention there are cute dogs?

TW: warzone conflict, TBI, strained family relations ( mentioned in passing)

I've been waiting to write this review for a few reasons. Mostly - because I'm struggling to really put into words how much this book blew me away and how proud I am. I was lucky enough to read one of the very first versions of this book and to give my honest feedback. I'm so happy to say that even the very first version of this book made me smile, made me feel so many emotions and absolutely swoon over Bennett. The final version of An Unexpected Path is simply put - incredible. Megan, your hard work has absolutely truly paid off with this wonderful debut novel.

The very first line of this book will grab you and make you giggle. It just continues throughout the whole book plus you'll fall in love with the easy banter between Marley and Bennett. It's so easy to fall in love with both Marley and Bennett, as well as all the side characters. But mostly... the dogs. And Lloyd. But even more importantly Yogurt. You'll definitely find yourself smiling, giggling and taking a second thought about some things while reading this book. I sobbed a few times - especially when I saw my name in the acknowledgments. Congratulations, you did it!

Gosh this book!!!

You know when you finish reading a book and you felt like you were wrapped in a warm hug, Ya, that’s how I feel putting this book down.

I fell utterly in love with Bennett. He is absolutely swoon worthy, THE perfect book boyfriend.

And Marley is pretty bad ass. I could never begin to comprehend what a conflict photographer goes through to bring visuals of the hard news to our front doors. And her representation in this book was so good!

The ‘Neighbours’, (𝘐𝘠𝘒𝘠𝘒), I looked forward to them making appearances! Yogurt, the best companion, I would love to have him chasing me around all day! All the dogs on the sanctuary, even the cows 😂🤣.

In all honesty, I loved everyone in this book.

This debut novel from our fellow beloved Bookstagrammer turned author @authormegmcspadden is truly so good.

Meg writes with such an ease that the book flows so perfectly from each page. I loved the banter between Marley and Bennett, the hilarity of our favourite neighbours (𝗈𝗁 𝖪𝖺𝗋𝗅, 𝖨'𝗆 𝖫𝗈𝗈𝗄𝗂𝗇𝗀 𝖺𝗍 𝗒𝗈𝗎), the forced proximity, found family, he falls first - just everything !!!!!

I laughed, cried, swooned, and had a smile on my face as I read the last words on the page.

You need to RUN to grab this book on 𝙉𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧 17𝙩𝙝, or better yet, just pre order 𝗂𝗍 𝗇𝗈𝗐, I promise you will not be disappointed !!

This is the first in the series and I cannot wait to read more!!! 💜💜

Debut author alert! This indie book checked off so many items on my list for what keeps me turning pages.

Right from the first chapter, I was immediately was giggling. I loved the banter and Marley's internal monologue. Bennett is the cinnamon roll we know and love dearly. Honorable mention to the neighbours and all of the furry side characters - they were such a highlight for me!

This book gives all of the feels and crosses a range of emotions. Another notable mention is the depth put into the MCs. This is so much more than just a superficial romance and the mental health representation is well done. The reader gets to understand each character individually (yay dual POV!) and watch how they ultimately fit together and compliment one another.

That feel good kind of story. The kind that squeezes your heart and keeps you turning pages. That slow burn perfection. Marley and Bennett are the most lovable wholesome characters and their immediate connection did me in. I love digging through other peoples baggage- especially when you can relate to so many of the emotions. Watching them work through it and overcome it made my heart happy.

Watching this love story unfold was like a glass of your favourite wine on a Friday after work - pure bliss!

Also - can we just talk about the neighbours. There is truly nothing better than side characters with epic banter - the family next door was THE best. The laugh out loud moments were endless and I loved them all. Just wait - how they enter the story is priceless!

All that to say- a debut novel and it was completely wonderful and heartwarming. Everything I needed in a cozy fall read.

Massive thank you to @authormegmcspadden for this ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. I cannot wait to get my physical copy for my shelf. Out November 17th!!!

Book Review
An Unexpected Path
By Meg McSpadden

Favourite Quote
“Every look we have shared before now feels like an appetizer that hasn’t dulled my hunger”

Characters
Both are a bit broken
Both are a bit unsure of their feelings
Both are afraid to trust the other

Bennett is everyones new favourite fictional boyfriend. He is humble, kind, compassionate and has this whole cinnamon bun lumberjack vibe thing going on that is irresistible - no wonder Marley falls head over heels!!

Marley is fiercely independent.
She is competent, creative, and a completely bad ass photographer with some huge emotional walls.

The Neighbours
Each scene with these secondary characters made me giggle. Honestly I could read a book just about them! The humour, the witty dialogue, their loving relationship and open hearts just made me love them More.

Thoughts
I was lucky enough to be a BETA reader for this incredible debut from @authormegmcspadden.
I didn’t know what to expect- I read with intent… I highlighted, I annotated, I asked questions…. I was scared… what if I didn’t like it….I shouldn’t have worried
Meg and I like the same books…we laugh at the same jokes… and when she writes… she is inside my head
She, like so many authors I know and respect gets it.
The banter ✅
Conversation and dialogue ✅
Secondary characters that steal the spotlight✅
Realistic expectations ✅
Anticipation and sexual tension✅
Characters with depth and complex
Emotional narratives ✅

Overall
You will laugh. You will Smirk. You might cry. You Might want to adopt pet.
You, like me, will fall in love with Marley and Bennett ❤️

Congratulations Meg!! YOU did it 😊

I fully admit that romance is not my go-to genre. But when the book is the debut novel written by a fellow reader and wonderful person, I will pick it up every time. An Unexpected Path represents my favorite kind of pleasant surprise.

Two main characters, both broken and a bit oblivious to it. Supporting characters who are funny, supportive and fully imagined. A dog… or twenty-one. Put them together with a storyline that is unique and creative, and you have the perfect feel-good story.

Reading this going into the holiday season helped get me out of a reading slump, and definitely boosted my overall mood.

Meg, I am so proud of you! You reached for the stars, and reached them! Can’t wait to read Nellie and Teddy’s story.

Megan has nailed the banter between Marley and Bennett, making for such a fun read. Add in some very lovable dog characters (Yogurt has my heart!!) and the perfect “home in the woods” setting and you won’t want to put this book down. We all deserve a love that sweeps us off our feet, honours who we really are, and pushes us to be more of our true selves like Bennett and Marley.

First off: Meg I’m so proud of you. To read something that I know you poured your heart and soul into was just the coolest experience.
Secondly: this book is a gem. It was page after page of warm fuzzies and smiles. And yes, Meg, I definitely hugged it when I was done.
I am so in love with Bennett and Marley and their whole dynamic. First off, this book is how all insta love needs to be written. There was not a dang second where I questioned the authenticity, or the motive. It was obvious and made sense. It took a trope I normally struggle with and made me not even think twice.
I loved how gentle and attentive their relationship was and how it allowed them both to be there for one another while also healing and finding themselves again. Ugh I get the warm fuzzies just thinking about it. ‘Scuse while I go give the book another hug.
And to top it all off Bennett collects stray dogs and stray cows so forgive me if I’m drooling a bit over this fictional man.
I loved this book with my whole heart. Marley + Bennett + dog pack + Pip and Yogurt 4ever. And Simon. Simon must be protected always.

I would give this book 4.5 stars.

**Caveat**

Where do I even begin? While this is a debut author, Megan is someone I personally know. Having said that, my review is objective and not skewed by this fact.

When I found out Megan was writing a book and eventually published a book, personally I was keeping my fingers and probably my toes crossed that when I read it, I would hopefully like it. People are always recommending books and there have been many times I find that they are just not my cup of tea. So…my intention was to read the book via Kindle Unlimited and if I did not like it, would keep quiet about reading it.

I am the type of reader that needs to be drawn in within the first few pages. That is just the way I am. I read this book in one sitting - downloaded the book in the morning and finished it that evening. I have not done that in a very long time. This book blew me away - I loved it!

Within each chapter of the book, we learnt more about who Marley and Bennett were as individuals all the while rooting for their relationship to grow. It was seamless and believable.

This book made me laugh, cry “happy” tears and gave me an overall warm fuzzy feeling putting a BIG smile on my face when finished.

Looking forward to reading more from this author.

When Marley meets Bennett and his 21 dogs, i knew i was going to love this book. It’s pretty insta-lovey, they fall in love in like three days, but it feels so organic and so right and you really fall along with them. Bennett is a total darling and i love an mmc who is just a plain good genuine person, whilst the fmc is a badass who does things most people wouldn’t dare. I loved them so much, such an amazing cosy read!

What a captivating debut novel! I was so excited that I was able to get an ebook of this romance story. Bennett and Marley are wonderful main characters. Everyone is going to fall in love with Bennett who is absolutely amazing and Marley who is strong, independent, and endearing. They both had personal growth as they faced some of their own complex issues. Their captivating relationship was so well written. There are serious and significant moments, heartwarming moments, and some great humorous moments in the storyline. The secondary characters are definitely entertaining and full of warmth. This is a book you don’t want to put down once you start reading. I was happy to see there will be a sequel that will feature two very interesting characters.
Sidenote - there are a lot of dogs in the story that you will absolutely adore!

I hardly know where to begin!
Thank you to author Meg McSpadden for providing me with an eARC of An Unexpected Path for review.
This is her debut novel, and if I didn't already know she was writing another, I'd say to get on it!
I truly loved this book. It's the story of Bennett and Marley, how they meet and fall in love. But it's my favourite sort of romance book - it's witty (I chuckled out loud on several occasions), steamy without being gratuitous, with great dialogue and banter.
I adored the details that made me connect even more with the characters (yes, I mean you, pupper dog Yogurt! AND the Hores lol).
But more than that, Marley and Bennett have been damaged by various elements in their lives. Their story has heart and grit. It's smart and well-paced, and you can tell our author herself is an avid reader.
We come into every relationship with our own experiences and baggage, and Meg has fully brought this to life on the page.
Her writing feels so capable and confident, if I didn't know this was her first novel, I wouldn't have believed it.
I can't quite get this write-up to do justice, but the takeaway here is I 100% recommend this book.

This book gets ALL THE STARS! This honestly may be my absolute favorite meet cute ever! Conflict photographer Marley finds herself stranded after spraining her ankle on a hike alone and is scooped up and rescued by Bennett, a gorgeous buff sweetheart of a man, who just happens to be walking all of the dogs from his animal rescue on his secluded property in the woods! A handsome caring hero AND a bunch of dogs?! Yes please!

I fell head over heels in love with Bennett and Marley ❤️ They are both incredibly imperfect, kindhearted, lovable humans and their chemistry is amazing! The banter sprinkled throughout, not just between the main characters, but also with the meddling and hilarious supporting characters, is top notch and had me constantly laughing out loud. The best found family ever and I seriously want to be friends with all of them!

I also appreciated the inclusion of the health issues and disabilities of each of the characters, the open discussion of toxic family members, and the scenes in Syria, which bring awareness to the conflict there. These topics are all important to discuss and the interactions felt very nonjudgmental and genuine throughout.

This author is an absolute genius in creating this heartwarming swoon-worthy romance! Highly recommend! 5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Let me tell you this book did not disappoint, I was quickly devouring it page by page but also not wanting the story to end! It is worth all the hype it is getting. A total must read if you like fall, dogs, cows, food, forced proximity and a swoomy romance. This book has all those and much more.
Marley a conflict photographer finds herself in a bit of a predicament when she injuries herself hiking, but no need to fear as a pack of dogs and a handsome stranger, Bennett come to her rescue. Due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control the only option is for Marley to go back to Bennett’s house. As the reader follows along in their journey we get glimpses into their lives and follow their journey as sparks fly and their connection increases by the second. Is it all too good to be true? Or is this truly a match made in the forest.
You’ll have to travel this unexpected path along with Marley, Bennett and Yoghurt to find out for yourself why Bennett is quickly becoming everyone’s new book boyfriend.

Here’s the thing, I wouldn’t say I was hesitant, but I was cautious going in, as I thought I would read the book and think of Meg saying these words, or be seeing the book through Meg’s eyes. Which I know is weird, as I never think about any other author’s books like that. Good news is, I didn’t. As soon as the pages started turning, I didn’t think about Meg at all! 😆 I was fully enveloped into the story. I was right there with Bennett and Marley.

This story was so delightful, the way we got to know who Bennett and Marley really were. And the struggles they’ve gone through and are still dealing with was so well written, I didn’t question a thing! I felt for them, I wanted to help them! Heck there were times I wanted to be them… 😏 There were some heavy parts, but they were told with the perfect amount of decency, that they didn’t overshadow the good bit! And there were so many good bits!

Anyways I could go on forever about this and that, because yes it really is that good. On November 17th I hope you all have this one in your hand! You won’t regret it! Hats off to you Meg, you did it and it’s incredible!

I received this book (Kindle version) in exchange for an honest review. My overall rating is 2.5 stars (rounded up), and I will try to explain why…

Briefest summary: In standard Hallmark romance fashion, Marley and Bennett meet in the woods, unexpectedly have to spend a lot of time together, and we get to see if they are “together” in the end. While I think the overall idea/story was cute, it just didn’t hit it for me, and I found myself struggling to finish.

I feel like there was some repetition in the storyline that made the book longer without necessarily adding value, and the female lead is worried about getting into a relationship due to something about her parents not loving her (or each other?) but I really didn’t follow that part at all.

Themes I liked: dogs, meet cute, funny neighbours, protective friends.
Not for me: crisis photography aspect, “sweetheart” said in a way that was supposed to be sexy, the main biting her lip constantly.

One thing that I really loved about this book was the representation: Marley is conflict photographer (what a cool job!) and she has PTSD, while Bennett played football and now has CTE that causes neurological symptoms like headaches and other issues. I have not read a book with a character that has the job of a conflict photographer or a character that has CTE. I LOVE when I read a book and it's something new and unique. I loved the pack of dogs, the dog sanctuary, Yogurt the dog, and the cast of side characters who make this book so funny and add so much to the story. Although the book can feel heavy at times, it's full of laugh and such a cute and swoonworthy romance. Definitely put this on your list!
