Sedimentology and Stratigraphy

Rate this book
This fully revised and updated edition introduces the reader to sedimentology and stratigraphic principles, and provides tools for the interpretation of sediments and sedimentary rocks. The processes of formation, transport and deposition of sediment are considered and then applied to develop conceptual models for the full range of sedimentary environments, from deserts to deep seas and reefs to rivers. Different approaches to using stratigraphic principles to date and correlate strata are also considered, in order to provide a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of sedimentology and stratigraphy. The text and figures are designed to be accessible to anyone completely new to the subject, and all of the illustrative material is provided in an accompanying CD-ROM. High-resolution versions of these images can also be downloaded from the companion website for this book www.wiley.com/go/nicholssedimentology.

I'm pretty casually into geology and not a geo major. I really wanted to take my knowledge to the next level and decided to try this book. This is one of those rare ones that completely shift the way I now look at the world. Now when I look at a sandstone I cliff I ask: what size are the grains? What kind of sandstone is this? Did it form is a desert, lake, or shallow sea environment? What are the layers surrounding this one that may have impacted how this sandstone formed? Etc.

Before this book, I would look at a sandstone cliff and think nothing. Now I feel like I have the ability to read more demanding geologic texts and understand most of what they're saying. Essential book for geo fans.

L'ho trovato troppo poco approfondito soprattutto per quanto riguarda le strutture sedimentarie.

I had classes with the author at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) (the book's front picture is the tempelfjorden mountain, one of our field trips points). Gary offers a lucid and simple presentation about sedimetology and basics of stratigraphy. Very usefull for the initial semesters of geology.
