Dr. Norman Vincent Peale (1898–1993) was a minister and author (most notably of The Power of Positive Thinking) and a progenitor of the theory of "positive thinking".
Peale was born in Bowersville, Ohio. He graduated from Bellefontaine High School, Bellefontaine, Ohio. He has earned degrees at Ohio Wesleyan University (where he became a brother of the Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta) and Boston University School of Theology.
Raised as a Methodist and ordained as a Methodist minister in 1922, Peale changed his religious affiliation to the Reformed Church in America in 1932 and began a 52-year tenure as pastor of Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan. During that time the church's membership grew from 600 to over 5000, and he became one of New York City's most famous preachers.
It's not a kind of book I would typically read. I like psychological books, but not on spiritual base. And there are too many repeats of same sentences throughout the book. Maybe 2.5 is my final rating.
The "Today" of the book is the mid-1970s. This results in some of the then-contemporary examples out-of-date (I have never heard of some of the people whom Peale assumes the reader will recognize), but this is not really an issue as the context is clear enough, and would be so without any specific examples. In any case, this book is much more anecdotal than The Power of Positive Thinking, which I personally enjoy as it serves to support the positive thinking concepts (modern readers will probably recognize this idea as the "Law of Attraction"). The stories are heart-warming and encouraging in that they show people improving their lives and circumstances, often in the face of great adversity. Even those that are more staid are inspiring because most of us have "regular" everyday obstacles to overcome. This book can help.
I highly recommend this book to those who have read The Power of Positive Thinking and wish to dig a little deeper into the concept via a cast of characters who exemplify the various aspects of the positive thinking mentality that Peale is promoting.
I figured that the new year was a good time to read this Dr. Peale book on positive thinking. Good reminders that we are in charge of our reactions to things and that God is ever there beside us.
"Fear thoughts can destroy creative capacity, and what is of even more sinister effect, they can bring to pass things that are constantly feared." (Norman Vincent Peale, The Positive Principle Today)
I found this book gives practical ideas on how to be positive in a negative world and through tragedies, difficulties and problems. The author gives many case studies of how these principles have worked in other people's lives and how to apply them.
Another book by Norman Vincent Peale that will give you a jolt of encouragement, comfort and edification to reach your dreams, goals and visions.
Most of the concepts if The Secret cane from here. Peale writes as very conservative christian which will not be to everyone's liking. I first read this when I was in sales but the concepts work on all fields of life. If you've heard about the law of attraction here's where it started.
Third time I’ve read this book over the years. There’s so much good advice that I cannot remember how to apply it all. But there’s always something that hits me just right, because it must be when I’m ready for it.
As Pastor Peale advises, read something that encourages positivity every day. This book is a recommendation as it can be read in chewable bites.
Yes, the author’s not perfect. But who is? He genuinely believes that life can be difficult, but with faith in Jesus, those difficulties can be faced with courage and confidence.
This book is a great continuation to The power of positive thinking. As explained by NVP, this book helps by keeping the momentum achieved in the first book in this series. Things happen in life where we may feel a dip on our personal level. The positive principle today gives a second wind and reinvigorates the mind and spirit. I'm halfway done and still very much engaged.
I had to return the book to the library as it was due, so I downloaded an online version to continue my reading. I was reading it in between book rentals and managed to complete it in mid July. It was a great refresher, although I think I still prefer NVP's original book (The power of positive thinking). This one talks about how to keep the positive outlook when everyday life sets in and negative events affect us. NVP uses examples from people he's encountered and how they faced challenging life events.
