3.75 marvelous 🌟

My first HR book of 2025 and it was one of the sweetest I've read, at first! Why? Well because the first part was interesting, intriguing, anticipating and overly sweet. Around 60% it was a bit (a lot) rushed and the last 20% was solely focused on a mystery to be resolved (which don't get me wrong I enjoyed because I love me some thriller romance) and another set of rushed apologies.

This is my first book where a side character is almost as important as an MC. Insert, the MFC's mom. She's a heartbroken drunk with informants everywhere, she reminded me a bit of Varys in Game of Thrones, IYKYK 😏
And for that, I expected her to be the one to solve the mystery regarding the MMC Jasper's sister. But alas, I was wrong. 🤔 (don't tell that to my husband though 🤭)

Jasper, after the death of his sister became a reclusive, cold and, may I say, broody man. One day he decides to have a wife for the sole reason of facilitating his business ventures, since married gentleman were an approved commodity in business deals. Little did he know that he'd be gaining what he never thought he wanted but everything he needed.

Marina, a beautiful intelligent woman who's constantly embarrassed by her mom's public spectacles. In order to gain her freedom (from her mother) she offers to be the Duke's wife. I loved her ramblings and level headedness. 👍

And thus their endearing "marriage of convenience" sets sail with little life lessons and heartwarming gestures here and there. But first, they made sure that both of them had good table manners because otherwise this would have been a no from either of them. 😄

Then comes my most favourite scene of the book when Marina realises that the Duke having lost his parents at a young age and then again his sister three years back, is in dire need of being embraced and taught the art of healing hugs. And thus she proceeds to put her arms around his waist and gently nuzzles her cheek to his chest, it takes him a moment to realise what's going on but then succumbs to the magical power of a mere hug.

The story loses some of it's splendor when it takes the couple only three days from their honeymoon to find each other and call it a marriage-in-progress. I wish the slow burn burned a bit slower than that and they actually took their time to learn each other and to gradually fall for each other.

Similarly, his groveling and apology at the end were a bit rushed. But all in all it was a lovely BBR read with my lovely Lori.

P.S: Marina ending up befriending Genevieve did not sit well with me. We are talking about a woman who has touched and tried offering sexual favours to the Duke. Nope, I am just going to ignore the part about them being friends, yep!

Ticking another 2025 Bingo square. 📝

4⭐️ Sooo soo lovely!

Marriage of convenience is my absolute favorite plot, especially if it’s set in a regency or victorian era. I don’t know what it is about it, but I absolutely love reading about two strangers who decide to marry without any hope of ever falling in love with each other, but then…slowly but surely, the exact opposite happens. Uhhhh baby!! 😮‍💨😏
And let me tell you, this book, was „marriage of convenience“ perfection. There was banter, there was angst, there was the expected awkwardness between them. Ugh just pure perfection.🤌🏻

I will go now and read the first two books in the series because my dumb ass started with the last one in the series….soooo yeaaah.🫠😂

I think I'm gonna break up with this author. While this book was decent I find my annoyances with the story direction and character actions too loud to ignore. Which has been a common occurrence for me having now read three books by this author.

Personally I liked the hero but I can't say the same for the heroine.

I didn't like her at all tbh. Funny though, because she didn't do anything to make me outright dislike her until they married. I didn't find her suddenly changing her mind about the rules and boundaries they both discussed and agreed upon prior to their marriage appropriate or fair to the hero. Particularly how hard she immediately began pushing back against those rules and the hero's boundaries just to get what she wanted. I found it aggravating and not romantic at all.

To me it felt a lot like she was two different characters. From the one we see throughout the first half who's very level headed and reasonable in her expectations for her marriage. Who has simple wants such as freedom from her mother and to have a life of her own again. She didn't have any dreams or aspirations regarding romance and seemed to have an aversion to passionate romance especially because of her own parents seemingly toxic dramatic love.

And yet once the wedding occurs she literally changes instantly. Suddenly she's realizing she's attracted to her husband and feeling all tingly when close to him. Wishing he'd kiss her or that they might share a bed chamber. Which went against their initial agreement, btw. And by the next day after having arrived at his home the night before she jumps head first into pestering the shit out of her husband. Thinking she's so cute and clever by trying to convince him he said he'd give her a tour of the gardens the night before when he was absolute when he told her the groundskeeper could do it. And so it went.

I didn't enjoy that at all and by that point I began skimming heavily. It just didn't work for me how that was presented. And it seemed so absurd that once they married the author just puts everything on super speed. It was maybe a week later and by then he'd confessed bits about losing his sister, and accepted the heroine's comfort when she found him playing the piano mournfully. And ofc this was a lead in to their first kiss and intimate scene which he regrets immediately. Followed by the grovel scene hours later and the consummation of their marriage. Then we jump two weeks of them supposedly being blissfully happy. Just hop, skip and blink and you'll miss it!

None of it made sense. At all. So, yeah. I'm just going to save my sanity by deleting the rest of this author's other books. ✌🏻

What a cute surprise from a new-to-me-author! A marriage of convenience with rules that were meant to be broken, and a side of mystery and suspense. And a beautiful cover!

Jasper Armitage, the Duke of Lymington - was lost in grief, didn’t know how to accept a compliment or how to joke around with another, was blunt and suffered seemingly from socially anxiety, and acted rather coldly a time or two.

Marina - was charming, witty, and tenacious without being a shrew, she was respectful and loving towards her crazy ass mother, yet she determinedly stood up to her mother’s nonsense too.

My favorite part of the book would definitely be the first half that focused on the growing romance, with her proposing a MOC to Jasper, their tea house date, her teaching him how to hug properly, a wonderful wedding waltz, to her then getting him to take her for a tour of their backyard gardens. Tons of light humor and witty moments. 5 stars for the first half.

My least favorite part of the book would definitely be their 2-week honeymoon. Three days after their wedding, those strict rules to avoid each other had miraculously fallen to the wayside and they had already become lovey dovey with each other. After three days, his cold heart had melted and they were both addressing each other, in and out of bed, as “oh! my darling’ and “yes, my love!” After three days, she decided her lifelong fears of marriage (arguing violently like her parents) were all for nothing. Their resistance to marriage resolved way too quickly. Oh, and I thought Daddy-talk was bad enough in bed, but these two only panting “oh, my darling/love!” repeatedly was just as cringe for me. Otherwise the steamy scenes were done nicely. 😍

Then it’s skips thru the rest of the 2-week honeymoon. I feel like it would have been much much better had the author used those two full weeks to show us a slower burn to the melting of his heart. As it was, the author changed course and the remaining part of the story was used to resolve the mystery, which I found entertaining. Minor plot holes here and there, but overall I really enjoyed this unique story. The opening with the heroine’s mother’s antics was a first for me. 3 stars for the second half.

“Yet, it was her heart that began to race as, to her surprise, he slipped his arms around her in return. One hand cradled the back of her neck, his fingers sliding into her hair, while his other arm encircled her waist entirely, his hand coming to rest on the side of her stomach.

“We shall have to remedy that,” Marina said, gently touching Jasper’s arm. He still had not moved.

He shook his head, coming back to life. “Remedy what?”

“You need to be embraced more,” she replied, smiling. “I do not think that shall break any rules.”

Before she could stop herself, she slowly put her arms around her husband, pressing her body flush against his, settling her cheek against his chest. His heart beat wildly, widening her smile. According to that steady, frantic thud, she was not breaking any rules at all.”

“See?” she whispered, a gasp threatening to escape her throat. “Is that so bad?”

He dipped his head, bringing his mouth close to her ear. “Not too bad, no.”

I loved that scene! Would have loved more. Thanks Olga, for our first BBR (bingo Buddy read). Thanks Chris, for your review leading us to this cute story!

He needs her as much or more than she needs him.

Within this thought-provoking story of extreme loss, there are nuggets of wisdom for any reader still in the grips of anger and grief.

Lady Marina has a grieving mother whose outlandish actions are sure to ruin Marina's reputation. Marina wants peace and freedom. Enter Jasper, the Duke of Lymington. Jasper needs a wife (in name only) in order to be taken seriously by potential business partners. Which all sounds perfect except for Jasper's deep grief and angry desire for vengeance. What happens next is the interesting plot of The Cold Duke by Sally Vixen.

The beginning of this novel pulled me in and I felt sympathy for both the hero and heroine. By the mid-way point, the pace began to drag due to wordy thoughts and mental angst. Still I wondered how the author was going to tie all of the threads together. She did so in the way I expected, but with an added twist. All of which led to a sweet (but rushed) ending, epilogue and bonus epilogue.

Content 411: This book contains a few mild swear words. It also contains several graphic sex scenes. Due to the grief and anger theme, this book may contain triggers for some readers.

Is a Marriage of Convenience Really Convenient?

An enjoyable read. Duke Jasper is keen to avoid the clutches of young ladies when he returns to society events. He needs a wife but wants to focus on finding who was responsible for the death of his sister. Lady Marina is desperate to escape from her embarrassing mother. When Marina learns that Jasper is looking for a wife, she takes action and meets him outside the ball to suggest a marriage of convenience. After a discussion, they both see that there are advantages to the arrangement and agree to marry. At first they both try to keep to their agreed rules but Marina wants more to their relationship. Jasper focuses on finding the culprit, even if it brings danger. When danger threatens Marina as well as Jasper, he realises where his main efforts should be. Will Jasper learn who killed his sister? Will Jasper realise how important Marina is to himself and to the Dukedom? Will Marina finally be able to find happiness? The story is well written.

DROPPED.

If this was written by an AI publishing, no wonder it was sooo devoid of human emotion. Anyhow, the story was bland. It was like someone decided to create two characters, and put them together in a situation and force them to be in love. LOL, sounds cold right?

There wasn't anything cold about the duke, more like reluctant.

Honestly, it had potential, but it had no human touch that made it emotional. Everything read like a mathematical formula, and so much for it being steamy. THERE WAS NO STEAM! Halfway through and still NO FIRST KISS and the MCs were better off as friends.

Even their first kiss later was terribly out of the blue, and I wasn't even interested to read the rest by then. Sounded like the makings of a good novel, but failed to deliver.

Jasper and Marina

Wonderful story and characters. It has all the makings of historical romance. It starts out with hacker seeking a wife with no strings attach as is the same for Marina but along the ride love has a different ending for the two if them. It HS intrique, mystery and love alk rolled up into one package ,and you have to read UT to know the ending. Would highly recommend and happy reading!☺

A Cold Duke is Warmed Up

The Cold Duke written by Sally Vixen is an entertaining historical Regency romance book. Jasper and Marina enter a marriage for reasons of convenience only. However their rule for an absence of love soon changes as through many roadblocks they learn to leap ahead as the future developes a growing desire for each other. The cold duke becomes a very hot duke!

answer the want ads!

I have several of Ms. Vixen’s book but this one a winner! Jasper is a Duke who advertised in the scandal sheets, he’s looking for a wife! Marina sees the ad and waits at his carriage and informs him she’s his match! They will wed, he will hunt his sisters killer and she will be free !

Great Read

A great love story that has mystery, murder, kidnapping, and more. A story of two people that come together not for love but for business and freedom. They end up being just right for each other and fall madly in love.

If you love steamy historical romance the this book is for you.

The Cold Duke By Sally Vixen

Five stars, this had everything, passion, mystery and little violence.
Basket the Duke, married Marina, base on his rules. Marriage of arrangement only. Revenge for the death of his sister was stopping their marriage from growing. Love had made them closer. Can it last? Good ending
