Rate this book
A witch must break her curse before the thorns turn her into a monster.

A magical book floats in Mora’s mansion, with phantom ink scrawling her life story in real time. When the ink runs out, Mora’s time to break her curse will be over.

Reclusive witch, Mora needs crushed rose petals to keep ink stocked in the pen. But who wants to live a half-life, a lonely life? The way to stop the curse is to find a way to get rid of the thorns growing on her skin before time runs out.

The boat ticket in Brody’s pocket allows him the chance for an adventurous future. But as he finally leaves his hometown, a piercing scream travels from the old mansion that everyone claims is haunted. No one would dare climb the hill and step foot on the abandoned property, rumored to be haunted by ancient magic. So why is Brody enticed by the shadow shifting across the ivy blanketing the old stain glass window? The ticket to freedom pulls him towards the harbor while his heart tugs him up the ghostly manor’s front steps.

This was an amazing ARC gifting! Thank you Cassie! This book is a beautiful alternate telling of a loved story, Beauty and the Beast. The characters are introduced slowly and in detail, allowing me to build them in my mind. The past and current lives of each main character add so much depth to their lives. The building relationship between Brody and Mora kept me wanting to turn the pages for more. The sarcasm and banter between them helps to slowly reveal the relationship.

I LOVED this book, especially since it was Beauty and the Beast inspired, but the beast was our FMC (hence the Fairy Tale flip).

I enjoyed how the author took the story that we all know and love, and put her own fantastic spin on it. I fell in love with Mora and Brody in an instant, and this story was so wonderfully crafted. It had many of the trials and tribulations that we know from the original story, but they have a beautiful twist.

Instead of being the "beast" as we know, Mora is covered in thorns all over her body, and the people she lives with have been turned into paper origami people. Her and Brody had to work together not only to save herself, and her friends, but also the people of the town.

This book had such a great ending, I loved every second of it, even if I was plagued with anxiety at times.

Thank you, Cassie, for the ARC of The Phantom Ink! This book is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, and while it definitely has some similar elements (cursed MC, magical friends and manor, symbolism or roses, etc), there are also a lot of things that make it unique! Some of my favorite things were the witty inner dialogue of the FMC, the vivid imagery, and the unique magic system that used magical orbs. There were a few things that I struggled with—but the main one was the MMC’s motivations for his choices (especially for the first half of the book). All in all though, it was a really unique and captivating retelling that definitely had me binging it in 2 days 😂 Also, the FMC and her home gave me Howl’s Moving Castle vibes. Oh, and I definitely cried at least twice 🙈😝

First of all, thank you so much Cassie for the ARC of The Phantom Ink! It was a pleasure to discover this story and this author.

I must say that the storyline drew me in from the beginning. I love the unique angle taken in this reimagining of Beauty and the Beast and how different it is from other retellings/reimagining stories.

Although some of Brody’s reactions seemed a bit odd to me at the start, I ended up falling in love with him and rooting for his relationship with Mora.

The story was fast paced from the beginning and kept me intrigued until the end. At some point, I feared that there was too much going on for a standalone, but it resolved very well by the end.

Overall, a very entertaining story, endearing characters, a touch of mystery and great banter.

I was blessed and given the book as an ARC. This is my honest review.

Wow! That was a wild ride!! This book is so good! The characters are so well written and interesting! I love Brody’s personality it’s so uplifting and infectious! I want one (a Brody)!!

The setting was an interesting mix of our world and an alternate world so it was easy to navigate. I love how the main setting was in a gothic fortress. It was a perfect place for this witchy tale!

The story itself was incredibly well thought out and so creative! It was like nothing I have ever read. It was fast paced and I couldn’t put it down! The twists and turns were everywhere so be prepared! The ending was perfection!

I’ll never look at roses the same…
Finished a beta read this morning, so my review will be short.
This is the second tale in the ‘Fairy Tale Flip’ series, which includes prequels to the main books (which I enjoyed thoroughly).

I would swear that the author paints her descriptions rather than types them. If you want a taste of romantic magic/magical romance in a modern gothic/slightly urban setting, then this book is for you.

Thank you, Cassie Swindon for sending me an arc copy of The Phantom Ink. This was such a fun read that kept me on my toes. This is my second read, I actually received an arc copy of The Wicked Blue last year and I liked it, but this book blew me out of the water. It was funny in all the right places, and scary and heartbreaking when it needed to be. I’ve never read such a captivating Beauty and the Beast retelling. I won’t forget it!

I. WANT. MORE.

This story was beautifully written. Magic. Love. Loss. Curses. Grumpy x Sunshine for sure. Brody is literal sunshine in a human if I've ever read about one. This was my first Beauty & the Beast style retelling and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It had elements of B&tB but with it's own flare. Definitely recommend.

Also, I want to live in that house!!

This is the second book in Cassie Swindon’s “Fairy Tale Flip” series. It is a standalone and told in dual first person POV.

In this Beauty and the Beat retelling, Mora is the beast and Brody is the beauty. Instead of a rose losing petals, we get to see a magic pen writing her story. Once the pen runs out of ink, time is up…unless Mora can find a way to save herself and her friends.

I loved Mora, Brody and her friends. With one friend wilting away, one friend speaking in riddles and not making sense and another friend slowly forgetting things, Mora is put under even more pressure to rid herself of her thorns while also saving her besties.

I loved Brody’s determination to find the most important person in his life. Leaving everything behind, he has to go on a journey he never imagined. I loved his ability to see through the thorns that plagued Mora to see her true self.

I loved the banter and the TENSION between Brody and Mora. I loved the character development of them both. I enjoyed watching how they went through each obstacle and both learned how to better themselves individually and as a team.

I absolutely loved the twists and turns, the details of not only the characters but also the surroundings and never ending mysteries of what the manor held secret until time to be revealed.

I enjoyed the first book of this series along with this one. I can’t wait to read more! I was provided an advanced readers copy. These thoughts and opinions are my own.

I’m not sure what I loved more, the banter throughout the entire story or the way Cassie wrapped up the ending.

Mora and Brody complimented each other as characters so well and the growth seen from both at the end had me smiling at my kindle as I read. Can we also talk about the TENSION??? These two were so sweet and spicy towards each other in the best way.

What a great addition to the Fairy Tale Flip series!

RATING: 4.5 (Rounding Up)

Having really enjoyed Cassie Swindon's first book in her Fairy Tale Flip series, I was excited to find out the second book in the series, The Phatom Ink, was coming out. This latest book is a seductive and unique take on Beauty and the Beast. It takes place in a modern setting but has plenty of fantasy and magic to satisfy any fairy tale lover's heart.

In the Phantom Ink, we meet Mora, a witch who is living a secluded existence and fighting to break a curse that has left her covered in painful thorns and her closest friends a mere wisp of their former selves. Like any good fairy tale, Mora's struggle is a race against time to find the answer to her curse--brought to life in this story through an enchanted book and pen. When the ink runs out from the pen, Mora's life will be over.

Through a series of unplanned events, Mora's solitude and the tight control she exerts over it is shattered when Brody, a man from a nearby village with a passion for wood carving and a personality that could outshine any darkness, enters her home and refuses to leave. At first Mora does all she can to get rid of this aggravating intruder, whose warm energy and flirtatious manner is alarmingly attractive.

Mora and Brody are both hiding dark secrets and deep pain associated with losing those whom they loved most. As they form a tenuous partnership to find a way to break the curse, will the feelings growing between them be enough to overcome the darkness that threatens to finally claim Mora? You will just need to pick up your copy to find out.

This was another fun and quick fantasy read from Swindon. The magic system that she builds around the original Beauty and Beast tale is definitely unique and makes for a very entertaining retelling. I love the characters of Mora and Brody. Brody is just delightful in how he refuses to let Mora's defensiveness stand in the way of his seeing the true nature of who she is. There were so many times I laughed out loud at his dialogue and his flirting is on point! It was also beautiful to watch how he comes to cherish Mora's heart and never judges her for the darker parts of her past. Mora is the flawed heroine that you love to root for and her sense of loyalty to her chosen family is inspiring. Even with the mistakes that she has made in her past, Mora has found a way to still retain a hope for a better future. She may be prickly on the outside, literally, but inside she has a passion that cannot be easily snuffed out.

If you love a good fantasty retelling with a healthy does of romance, a chance at redemption and a bit of spice, then definitely give Swindon's The Phantom Ink a read!

"The Phantom Ink" by Cassie Swindon offers a captivating twist on the timeless tale of Beauty and the Beast. 🌹 I thoroughly enjoyed the intricate character development, particularly Mora's journey as a witch burdened with thorns and Brody's quest for adventure and love.

Mora is a complex and compelling character, a witch burdened with thorns that twist out of her skin, a physical manifestation of the curse placed upon her by her own sister. Despite the darkness that surrounds her, Mora possesses a fierce determination to break the spell that affects her abdominal her best friends and reclaim her humanity. Her journey is one of resilience and self-discovery as she grapples with the consequences of her curse while navigating the complexities of love and acceptance. Mora's strength and vulnerability make her a captivating protagonist who resonates long after the final page.

Brody is a visionary with a yearning for adventure and escapades, driven by a desire to escape his haunting past. His character is imbued with a sense of wanderlust and curiosity, yet beneath his adventurous facade lies a longing for connection and belonging. As he becomes entwined with Mora in a shadowy dance within the confines of a gothic mansion, Brody must confront his personal demons and learn to embrace love once more, despite the dangers posed by Mora's curse. With his charm, wit, and depth of emotion, Brody emerges as a compelling counterpart to Mora, adding layers of intrigue and romance to the narrative as well as a light hearted and whimsical optimistic and whitty personality.

The modern retelling within a gothic mansion filled with secrets and enchantment kept me engrossed from start to finish. Swindon's unique spin on this classic fairy tale makes for an enthralling read that I highly recommend, especially for those who enjoy a touch of romance and mystery. 🥀

“Lethal—I don’t like that word. … though I never intended to be lethal. Do intentions matter in the grand scheme of things? ”

First of all, I want to thank Cassie for sending me an ARC of The Phantom Ink. This is such a unique retelling of the Beauty of The Beast. I was left in awe and amazement. There are a lot of Beauty and the Beast retellings/reimagining. This one was unique in every way, I loved the gender reversal our FMC was the beast. While there were similar elements there were still quite a few things that made it unique and different.

It did take me a while to get into the book but once I did I was completely hooked and I had no idea where the story was going to end. I enjoy our main characters Mora and Brody and their witty banter. Brody was giving golden retriever vibes and loved that he fell first for more.

Overall this book was creative and fast-paced. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Thank you very much to the author for the advanced copy! My opinions are my own.

This was my first fairytale retelling and I really enjoyed the concept! I thought the gender flip in making Mora the beast was a unique idea and found how the thorns and paper curse manifested in this setting very interesting. A vivid picture was painted in the initial pages, setting up how the curse came to be and the creepy manor home in which everyone now dwelled. There were plenty of challenges and action packed trials for our main duo, Mora and Brody, that kept the pages turning.

That being said, I did find the writing to be a bit jumpy at times and hard to keep up with the quick moving plot. I also wasn’t exceedingly charmed by the dialog and thought Brody was initially quite silly. After multiple tries, I also think a modern fantasy setting just isn’t my thing. All in all, this book wasn’t for me but that is totally a personal preference. There are plenty of reasons someone would love this book, so if you like a fairytale retelling with twists and unique concepts I would suggest giving The Phantom Ink a go!

This is a gender-bent retelling of Beauty & the Beast, and what a fun and unique twist on an old classic! It was a quick read and yet not lacking in the way of details or worldbuilding. I was hooked by the end of the prologue. Mora was an interesting character to watch develop and I enjoyed seeing her POV and growth throughout the story. And I must be a bit of a Mora myself because I found Brody to be a bit too flippant and annoying at the beginning, but boy did he grow on me. His trust and loyalty were wonderful and he definitely had some swoon worthy moments. I wish there’d been more about the book and maybe some of Kavianne’s POV or history, but I don’t think the story lacked in any way without it.
Overall, a very enjoyable and light read!

The Phantom Ink is part of Swindon's Fairy Tale Flip series. This one is her take on Beauty & The Beast.

The story starts by introducing us to Mora, the eldest of three sisters. She has assumed responsibility for her sisters. The middle sister, Kavianne, has mastered her magic and now Mora needs to show the youngest, Lessie, how to release her fears and take steps forward. Unfortunately, while she had the best of intentions, there were tragic results. Enraged, Kavianne curses her older sister. Mora ends up covered in painful thorns.

The story then jumps ahead a few years. Mora is living in Chambrea Fortress with her three best friends (Feathi, Nax, and Yin), who were in the "blast zone" and affected by the curse. They live, hidden away, where no one can stumble upon them. Or so they believe.

It is at this point that we are introduced to Brody, our hero. He has his own backstory, and is trying to leave Villeneuve, where his family resides. He is keen to find adventure and stumbles across Chambrea Fortress while sneaking away through the forest.

In this version, Mora is The Beast, Brody is Beauty, and instead of a rose losing petals, there is a magical book using a special pen to write Mora's story. When the pen runs out of ink, time is up.

The Phantom Ink was an unexpected delight! Swindon quickly pulled me into the story and kept me completely captivated throughout. I adored the characters she created, both primary and secondary, and I throughly enjoyed all the twists and turns she incorporated into a well known tale. There is also quite a bit of world building in this magical fantasy, and I think the author did a marvellous job describing everything, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the story.

Yin's ramblings poetic and beautiful but made as much sense as Jabberwocky:
"The color orange deserves furry textures though it tastes sour."
"Blue only makes pitter-patter sounds and whispers. It simply doesn't know how to yell, and I surely won't be the one to teach it."
"Yellow needs no introduction and has a tendency to carry a scent of youth."

Mora is a very strong female character. She is kind and thoughtful, independent and considerate, smart and fierce. She is not a victim and she doesn't blame her sister. Brody is a wonderful male character. He is brave and determined, creative and witty, patient and sweet. He has a way of getting under Mora's skin, and it is exactly what she needs.

I definitely recommend checking out this well known tale with a twist!

6 Stars!! I devoured this book. Beauty and the beast is my favorite and I love retellings of any kind but specifically beauty and the beast. One of the best beauty and the beast retellings i've ever read. I loved the chemistry and banter between Mora and Brody. Very atmospheric and incredible world building. The curse and the ticking pen created real stakes and emotional weight. I loved Mora's fierce loyalty to her friends and her resilience and Brody's soft strength and persistence. I just loved everything about this book and I can't wait to read everything else Cassie Swindon writes.

Thank you Cassie Swindon for the opportunity to be an ARC on this book, with that said here is my honest review with trying to be as spoiler free as possible!

***This is a multiple POV gender switched Beauty and the Beast retelling***

Firstly the story follows Mora our main female character and Brody the main male character, I will be blunt in the fact they are both hard pills to swallow ha-ha!
The story starts off truly pounding your heart into nothing but a mess and I was very unprepared for it, but 100% loved it.
I thought that the gender switch was very unique for the beauty and beast retelling and while I won't divulge what made Mora the "beast" I will say- It was really quite cool and out of the box thinking that I very much enjoyed learning about and see transpire.
The fairy magic and monsters/ creatures within the story are also gripping, I thought the descriptions were awesome and easily created a movie in my head (For the readers who experience the same thing).

It's an easy, intriguing read that you will want to finish but there are things that were hard to get behind that I just didn't find very believable or that were small continuity errors.
For instance the motivations Brody had for staying at the castle were..... not up to par, mixed with his obnoxious personality in Mora's POV's it was a bit hard to grab hold of him and his choices.
His saving grace were his POV's where you got to see his real personality and thoughts and deeper traumas. He still was #1 at grinding my gears but his POV's definitely helped him ( as well as his slinking off to the library to ugh..... coat the papers among other scenes...).

The next con will be somewhat of a small spoiler in why Mora is a "Beast" so please ignore the rest if you don't want to be spoiled.

Mora has thorns all over her body including her hands (I won't say why so there is still a mystery) but what I will say is the continuity error I found that was a bit irritating was how she couldn't handle books or not get her thorns hooked on sweater, or feared harming her friends by a simple touch but yet grabs and holds and runs while holding a wolf pup clutched to her chest and it staying completely unharmed without a whimper ..... Every time she slept with or held that thing it should have been yelping to me haha.

Other than that I can see this being a go to palette cleanser or comfort book and am so glad I had the chance to dive into it!!!

Overall Rating: 3.5/5

Spice Meter: 2/5

This gender reversed Beauty and the BEast retelling SIZZLES, and is the perfect follow up to Swindon's The Wicked Blue. Swindon is fantastic at rewriting fairy tales with gender reversals, and this second installment in her Fairy Tale Flip Series is proof! There are several Beauty and the Beast Elements here - roses, an enchanted book, a demon plant, and a morally gray heroine who simply wants to be loved.

Tropes:
Beauty & the Beast Retelling
Gender Reversal Fairy Tale
Fairy Tale
Found Family
Multiple POV’s
Magic / Enchanted Items
LGBTQ Representation

Characters:

Mora: The FMC, and also the Beast. She is cursed by her sister after accidentally unaliving her youngest sister while trying to teach her magic. It was not Mora’s fault, but she take the curse on, and tries for YEARS to break it. The curse involves her growing thorns and turning into a plant that can kill children.

Brody: Our MMC, (the Beauty character), is trying to save a child and escape to find his daughter when he is captured by Mora and her enchanted friends (made of paper). Though he tries to deny his feelings, he is instantly drawn to Mora and her castle, and becomes determined to break the curse, while falling for Mora.

Some Highlights:
- There are a LOT of elements in this story that were confusing. There were many times I had to re-read to figure out what was happening, which is why it has the rating it has. It was a FANTASTIC story, but there were so many characters and elements of magic to keep track of that it did get confusing at times.
- I love Mora. She’s so fiercely independent, and it takes her realizing that she needs to rely on others before the curse is broken. Her life is so much better when she begins to rely on her friends and Brody to help her.
- The slow burn between Mora and Brody is delicious. Classic Cassie Swindon slow burn that has a great payoff. (It’s not explicit, which I appreciate!)
- I would love some artwork of the castle – it was almost a character on it’s own!
- I loved that the ink pen was the “holder of the curse”. It kept the story moving, and it gave Mora and Brody a goal.
- Definite Little Shop of Horrors Vibes with this story as well.

I’m looking forward to Swindon’s next Fairy Tale Flip! Thank you to Cassie Swindon for allowing me to be an ARC reader for this book!

While “The Phantom Ink" is dark and mysterious and filled with twists and turns, the humor and heart-tugging moments within provide much needed respite and depth to this gender-swapped take on the classic Beauty and the Beast retelling.

The FMC is a witch named Mora Thomesse. As a result of a family tragedy, her sister cursed her with thorns that cover her skin. Her sister cursed Mora’s friends as well, though burdened in different ways. They are all trapped, living in a gothic mansion called Chambrea Fortress. Mora is determined to break the spell, and over the years, tries and tries and TRIES, and fails to figure out how to break it. Rather than an enchanted rose, there is a pen that writes the story taking place in the mansion. The curse must be broken before it runs out of ink. What happens after that will be worse than death. Mora is smart and strong and fierce and resilient, and her growth through the book is a joy to behold.

The MMC, Brody Ricci, is an adventurous and curious but has a past that haunts him. He’s always looking for the next adventure to continue to distract and dull the pain he holds close to his chest and works hard to keep buried. However, underneath this “I’m up for anything” exterior, Brody actually longs for connection. He falls hard for Mora, as she is, and his devotion is profound.

Loving Mora is literally and figuratively a risk. They both know it. But the heart wants what the heart wants, and they peel back layers, and overcome fears with one another as they search for a way to break Mora’s curse. And Brody’s past manages to weave its way into the mystery, which was a twist I hadn’t expected!

The dark gothic mansion is a perfect location, with secret places, enchanted objects, even tunnels below! Walking through the halls and rooms was easy to imagine in my head. The surrounding city, too. Mist, fog, a sense of foreboding, it was all woven through each page. And there are moments of laugh out loud humor that provide much needed levity.

Tropes include grumpy/sunshine, he falls first, found family, LGBTQ representation, slow burn, golden retriever MMC, and a very unique magic system.

I thought this twist on the classic tale was fantastically done.

"Don't run from me, Lulita." His teasing words are so close to making me combust. "I told you, my hands are made of magic, but you don't want to know what my mouth can do."

Mora is a witch cursed by her sister after a terrible accident. Her 3 friends Nyx, Feathi, and Yin were cursed along with her, and they have stayed locked up in Mora's mansion for a long time trying to find a way to break the curse. Brody is an adventurous man looking to find his way in life. He has a boat ticket out of his little hometown and is anxious to start his new adventure when he hears a scream that brings him to the haunted mansion in the forest. Before he knows it, he is wrapped up in a completely different adventure with Mora and her friends that leads him closer to finding out more about himself and his own past than he thought possible.

This book was delightful. It made me laugh a lot which was a very welcomed surprise. You can definitely tell that this was inspired by Beauty and the Beast - cursed MC, magical companions, roses, etc - but it was also a completely independent story with it's own magical components, and I absolutely loved that. There were several points while reading this where I audibly gasped (including one IN THE FREAKING prologue that I was NOT expecting that early on). Mora and Brody have instant chemistry (even while they are arguing), and you can't help but be intrigued about how they will come together. Brody instantly gave me Flynn Ryder vibes, and I absolutely loved it. He's snarky and charming, and you can't help but smile at his commentary and male swagger.

I really loved this story. It's a very cute, fluffy story that makes you feel nostalgic and sentimental if you grew up on Beauty and the Beast and other Disney classics with a sprinkling of more adult language and adult "activities". ;) I really enjoyed this, and I look forward to looking up The Wicked Blue and any future projects that this author has coming.

I received an ARC for my honest review.

I loved this idea of this book and from the beginning it seemed such an interesting idea with the gender flip, but also with the changes to the original story. I loved how unique the magic was and the backstories of our characters.

The story progressed well and the ending was good and I enjoyed the story. I loved the characters and the banter, it was lively and exciting and enjoyable.

The thing I struggled with was the writing and how it was all put together. It seemed a bit lacking to me. I wish the structure had been better. A few of the 'ways out' seemed easy and like they weren't built into the whole story. And this disappointed me because everything else was so good, I just wanted these connecting pieces to be more thought-out. For me it fell a bit flat. And I didn't care for the sex scene in this novel, it felt forced and awkward, but yet the characters were talking about how great and perfect it was. It felt like they were overcompensating for something that just wasn't there for me.

The intimate connection seemed an afterthought. There were spicy words thrown in to lead us in that general direction, but it didn't feel natural. This was a bit of a disappointment for me because I was really looking forward to that scene and seeing the two characters together and how they fit. That's my favourite part about romances is seeing how the characters are together in any setting and by any means. This fell flat.

The story was good, but the writing didn't do it justice.

Book Review: The Phantom Ink by: Cassies Swindon

This story was so well written! I absolutely loved the reverse retelling. The Female MC Mora she’s a witch who has been cursed by her younger sister to be a hideous beast covered in thorns her whole world is documented by a magical book and ink and she must find a way to break the curse before the red ink runs out! I loved her take on the cursed friends of the beast and the banter… I could write about that in great lengths Brody is the perfect book boyfriend and I have never read a book with such epic banter between the two MCs it was hilarious how quick and witty his comebacks are! I loved the plot and the world building!!! It was full of rich and lucious details which I love when books do that! I really cannot wait to read more from this series! I also hope she does a look forward for this group of characters or maybe they crossover in the next book. 10000% recommend this story I devoured in a day!

Second retelling I’ve read from this author and she out did herself again❤️🖤 This was a beauty and the beast retelling but uniquely different from the traditional character roles. Mora is a witch who caused the death of one of her sisters accidentally. Her other sister was so enraged that she placed a curse on her and three of Mora’s friends. She’s not the beast you expect. She has thorns throughout her body and her friends are made of paper. Brody stumbles upon her home and thinks she is stealing children. His wild goofy golden retriever personality drives Mora crazy. He is confident and tests Moras patience and causes her hard exterior to crack. The curse worsens as Brody learns of her past and for some reason cannot leave her or her friends without helping. Then a plague forms from her thorns that her sister creates to cause more agony. Will Mora be able to break her curse? Will there be a possible future for her and Brody? This book was more than what I expected and I cannot wait for more retellings from this author!

Synopsis
Going into this book, I knew to expect a Beauty and the Beast retelling. However, I did not expect the role reversal between Mora and Brody. Mora is now sentenced to live a life, cursed by her sister. Brody, being the "beauty" is the captive and antagonist of the story.

My Opinion
I really struggled to get into this book based on prose like "it looked like the furniture store vomited all over the room." The story lacked mature writing and thoughtfulness. I can see where readers can be drawn to the story, but for me, it was a miss.

I'm never one to dismiss a writer based on one book, so I am open to reading more from this author. I really want to give this author another shot because I can see what she’s trying to do and her vision is clear.

Rating
3.5 stars; It was good.
2.5 spicy pepper emojis; At least one open door scene with reader present.

Thank you

I was given an arc for my honest review.
The Phantom Ink by Cassie Swindon is a gender-bent Beauty and the Beast retelling. It tells the story of Mora, Yin,Nax and Feathi, four friends who are cursed as punishment for the accidental death of Mora's youngest sister Lessie.Mora has to break the curse before the enchanted Ink runs out writing the story of her life. Otherwise she and her friends will die. Then one night a handsome adventure named Brody heartbroken that he hasn't found his daughter Cat since she and her mother left five years ago, stumbled on her property. They help each other heal and have a thrilling adventure.

This book is a hilarious and delightful read. The characters are interesting and fun to learn about. It's easy to root for them to succeed. There's also an interesting theme of forgiveness and grief throughout the story.

Overall, I would give the story a 4/5 and a 3/5 on the spice scale. The only reason it isn't a 5 is because I didn’t immediately want to start the journey again after finishing the story like my last few five star reads.

Received ARC for Honest review. This is retelling of Beauty of the Beast. I Enjoyed this book and it had a lot of Fantasy elements, Enchanted House, Enchanted Book with a saucy personality , Fairies, Witches. I liked the twist that the FMC is the Beast the MMC is the Beauty or should I say Beau? Also there is a female obsessive Gaston in this version lol It had really tender moments and some moments made me laugh out loud. Mora and Brody are sweet together and they are tested individually and together to try and break the curse and save their village from it. I liked that he would push her buttons and they both have heartbreak in their past that they have to work through and learn from each other. Overall its a sweet romantic Fairy tale retelling and I look forward to reading more books from Cassie Swindon.
