Hope and war would never go in the same sentence. The words were like oil and water.
Treaties crumble. Unlikely alliances emerge. The resounding Echoes of War amplify their call. Amaia and her found family, bound together by threads of loyalty, have been shattered by a heart-wrenching betrayal. Desperate to do everything they can to protect the place they call home, the band of misfits find themselves compelled to split up.
As the line between right and wrong blurs, the question shifts from “What would you do?” to the haunting realization of “What have I done?” In this dystopian landscape, morality is but a fragile thing. The group finds themselves tested as elemental magic clashes with dark arts and advanced technology.
In the midst of turmoil; delicate bonds begin to flourish for some, emerging as symbols of hope amid life’s unyielding storms, while others grapple with the tests imposed by the ravages of war.
The saga continues, and the echoes sing louder than ever before.

It's release day!! I'm so happy y'all are here. While Rising is my heart and soul, Echoes of War is my baby. It's certainly my favorite thing I've ever written and arguably read (super biased, but if you don't support yourself, then who will, ya know?).
My books are dark and gritty, and I want you to know that your mental health is important to me. As I dive deeper into the dark fantasy side of my stories, noting the following trigger/content warnings is of the upmost importance.
- Gore/Violence - Blood & breath play - Torture - Inferred cannibalism (briefly mentioned) - Cursing - Mental illness - Death - Sexual content - Addiction
My books aren't for everyone, and I'm not looking to be the next Tolkein. There's social commentary and politics involved, but at the end of the day, I write the stories I want to fall into, and hope you enjoy the immersion of my world. If that plethora of warnings only brought you excitement, well, I'll see you for book three.
Until fate decides to intervene. Whenever destiny chooses to meddle once more. xx Nelle
There were some inconsistencies in the book that threw me a little, like details that were mentioned later that I was like what?? Where did that come from?
It’s very plot dense, there’s instances where I felt like too many words were happening but if they didn’t happen you wouldn’t understand what’s going to happen in the next paragraph or chapter.
You should definitely read the first book for background info bc you’ll be kinda lost without it.
Boy did this book take me for a ride. Echoes of War takes place right after the events from Rising, the first book in the series. We were all still reeling and processing, and this one starts off tense!
I was torn between wanting everything to be okay and wanting to see how it all played out. I’d say EOW was even better than Rising, and I really liked the first book!
I loved the new characters we met along the way, getting to see our favorites from Rising again, the questionable choices made, the character development… the expansion on the world building!
I was so tense during the second half of the book; there were some heartbreaking moments, as well as hopeful ones. I didn’t know how the story would end, and that scared me. I swear Amaia had a death wish and I’m so glad her friends/found family were there for her; she definitely kept me on my toes😂
I’d love to see more tender moments between Amaia and Alexiares as well.
I’m really curious on how things will play out in the third book; I feel like I was left with so many questions and I want answers!
Thank you Nelle Nikole for the eARC; looking foward to reading the next one!
4.5⭐️’s - A perfect sequel to Rising! This book was full of epic action and gory, brutal fight scenes; strong, badass, and morally grey female leads; lgbtq+ representation; banter filled slow burn romance; sci-fi, dark fantasy magic; deep trauma and emotional damage; all set in a post-apocalyptic dystopian world. And it ended on another cliffhanger!!! I need to know what happens next!!!
How do I write this review without spoilers ?! Damn it, what a ride this was. The first half was a bit slow paced, but it just matched with what was going on with the characters. The planning, the long travels, it all takes time. Than you hit near the middle of the book and everything just speeds up, you're turning page after page needing to know what happens next. The last part of the book was just gut wrenching. So much was happening with some of our favorite characters. The amount of times I just gasped and had to stop to think of what was going on is ridiculous. Nelle definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat with this book. We do lose a few characters and my heart just broke for them. Except one. The last one was all well deserved. . Our favorite characters go through hell though, I mean in Rising they went through a lot, but that's nothing compared to what goes down in this book. We learn so much more about Reina, Tomoe, Riley. Unfortunately Seth 😒 I really love that we get all of their povs. It's not overwhelming like it can be sometimes with multiple pov in books like this. It all came together giving you a fuller picture of what's going on. Allowing this to playout like a movie in my head. . But yall, the relationship between Amaia and Alexiares finally heats up in this one. And I can confirm that I was so freaking excited for them. The slow burn was exactly that....sloooowwww, but worth it. It made sense though because Amaia was going through so much hurt after Jax. Well honestly before Jax even, she just never allowed herself to feel and heal. Alexiares though, his villian self, knew what his princess needed. Time. Patience. And also a little push back when she'd fight. The bloodhound and his bloodreina. I just adored how he also didn't want to change who Amaia is, just wanted to stand by her side as she did what she was doing. But can we talk about that epilogue 🥺😭 Talk about emotional. It was beautiful, heartbreaking, healing, and I just wanted to hug Amaia...and Alexiares, if he'd let me.😆 . I just absolutely enjoyed this book, I can't wait for the next one because I've gotta know what our girl Amaia has planned. But also nervous, I don't want to lose anymore of our favorite characters. 😰😭 Please be kind to us Nelle.
Thank you to the author for providing me with this arc! I loved this book, it was so intricate and well thought out. The only drawback for me was Alexiares, he was too aggressive for my personal tastes in guys. But otherwise absolute perfection, I highly recommend!
First off, thank you so much to Nelle for letting me be part of her ARC team. I have absolutely no hesitations about sharing my love for this series.
Everything I loved about Rising increased tremendously in Echoes of War. The story begins with everyone (including the reader...because I was distraught at the end of Rising), recovering from the last events from Rising. Because the author does an incredible job of showing her character's emotions, it's so easy for the reader to become attached to them. And our found family is going THROUGH IT after what they previously experienced.
Without giving too much away, I can say that this book will pull at your heartstrings. In the beginning, it's all about recovering and moving forward, then it goes to getting the plans in motion (also there's a some spice along the way ;) ), and then finishing off with very epic ending. And like before, you'll be left wanting more.
⚠️Trigger Warnings ⚠️ -grief, substance abuse, violence, sexual activities, profanity, graphic descriptions, death on and off the page, torture, difficult family dynamics, and war scenes
📝My Review📝 Where to begin. First of all, as a disclaimer, I am reviewing Echos of War by Nelle Nikolas as an ARC. However I am also reviewing as someone who has not read her first novel, Rising. With that said, Rising has been added to my TBR list and it’s not because I didn’t understand what happened before Echos of War. I’m adding it because I’m not sure if I’m ready to ‘leave’ this thrilling and haunting dystopian world set in what was the United States of America.
While I know what will happen, I find myself wanting to experience the journey each character had that led them to their current experience. In Echos of War, Nikolas tastefully and effectively provided the background information of the story plot from the first book, but also established a ‘current plot’ feel in its beginning chapters. Through her writing it didn’t give a rushed explanation of the prior book’s plot or how she was setting the stage for the present time in the story arc. In addition, she added a reference section that contained maps, pronunciation guide, magic index and supportive playlists.
Furthermore, Nikolas writes character descriptions and changes that are subtle and informative to a reader to learn or ‘refresh’ on who the character is, their personality, and their physical descriptions. What I think I enjoyed and appreciated most about her writing is that it was strategic in providing all the supportive and descriptive information throughout the novel not just the beginning chapters. Nikolas applied the immediate and necessary content to set the stage properly and to engage the reader into this world, but the rest of the book was also sprinkled with further information that only enhanced the sequel.
As stated before, this is a dystopian novel established in a world that is currently experiencing “The After”, but references “The Before”, which was expressed as current day life as we, the readers, know as the United States. The novel is filled with multiple POVs from her MCs. Each of the MCs paint a different perspective of their world to the reader. The MCs are challenged in not only surviving war, but also in love, relationships, ethics, prejudices, power, status, politics, emotional turmoil and thriving to live. This is a gripping journey for all characters that will leave the reader on the edge of their seats. My journey included, but was not limited to the following emotional turmoil: content, curious, confused, shocked, lustful, excited, disappointed, hopeful, anxious, inspired, proud, and so much more. This truly is a series that will not disappoint and has become one of my favorite reads of 2024!
🤍Thanks to for Nelle for trusting me with their novel in return for my personal review🤍
Note to the reader: I received this book as an ARC, however, my review is not sponsored and my thoughts are my own. No spoilers, just a lot of raving about a damn good book.
If you haven't read my review of the first book "Rising", feel free to go check it out because that one is calmer than this one is about to be. Let me know when you're done...okay great welcome back to a chaotic book review of a book that had my heart in shambles.
In my last review, I focused mostly on the story overall, its environment, and my adjustment to a story that wasn't my preferred genre. This review is going to be all about the characters and why I think you should read this story specifically for them. I can't say much because of spoilers, but I can say there is a character for every type of person out there. Do you need a strong FMC with relatable issues and doubts but still pushes on anyway? Read this book. Do you need to see the enemies-to-lovers trope done in a satisfying way where both parties would fight for one another until the end? Read this book! Do you need to cry from pain and then cry again from joy (that still hurts a bit) then, you get it.
It may seem like an obvious choice to pick Amaia as my favorite character, but there's no denying this woman is the soul and star of this book. As a young woman in her late twenties myself who's never lived through any of the choices Amaia had to make, I can say she feels like another side of me. While you may not agree with all of her decisions, you have to agree she's doing it with the best intentions to protect and fight against evil.
Keep in mind this is a multi-POV book, so if you tend to get overwhelmed from reading more than two different perspectives, I wouldn't recommend reading this book with other books. I do highly encourage you to read the first book before jumping directly into this one. For some people, it would be easy to piece together what you missed, but if you want this book to hurt, I mean really get into your core, then spend one to two weeks (depending on how fast you read) and find time to get through both stories.
Trust me, take the time to read this story today! It was released on February 29th, so now you have no excuse not to grab it!
To the author, if you read this, thank you. My notifications are turned on for your next release!
“War was not won by a single battle, but rather the collection of strategic moves made. A battle here, a battle there. In the end there would be one winner... This wouldn’t be a battle to be won, but a battle to survive.” 🔥 Damn, Nelle did it again! She took Rising, a book combining everything you love about the sci-fi/fantasy/adventure genres into a single world, and leveled up by throwing in twists on top of twists, jaw-dropping shockers, spicy spice, and prepping for war. (As a polemology junkie, that made me super happy.)
When we left our Band of Misfits at the end of book 1, Rising, they were reeling from a shocking reveal, which rocked their foundation. Betrayal of this extreme DEMANDS to be felt, so our cast of characters are fracturing at the seams. However, war is coming and they must figure out a plan of attack to ensure the survival of the Monterey Compound and civilization itself. This book took me on a JOURNEY! It’s fast-paced, full of drama, a dash of spicy spice, an epic battle, and SO. MUCH. CHARACTER. DEVELOPMENT! Truthfully, there isn’t enough space for me to rave about this book, so I will leave you with this: if you liked the morality & war commentary from the Hunger Games series, enjoyed The Last of Us, and were intrigued by the science from the Divergent series… then this world is for you!
But as I’ve learned, her writing is so much more than a few crazy moments. When we left our characters in Rising, they were far from home and were dealt a couple of massive blows to their familial foundation. So Nelle spends a big chunk of this book picking up right where we left off and showing how our characters deal with their hurt and trust issues.
However, war doesn’t care if you’re trying to mend a broken heart… it’s coming. And it’s ruthless. Yes, people die in this book too. And yes, it’s devastating. But that’s the cost of war.
The writing in this book is smart, entertaining, emotional, dark, funny, violent, purposeful, and full of heart. If you haven’t read Rising or the Rising: Origin Stories, PLEASE do so, because you have to dive into this world.
Echoes of War is the second book in the State of the Union series. It follows our family as they face the reality of Seth's betrayal and the war that is coming. We see different sides of each member of the family as they deal with their grief and anger, and we see them channel their inner strengths to do what needs to be done for the war to come. This book has action, adventure, friendship, love, loyalty and some spice. You are rooting for the family because they become your family. Alexi is the perfect counterpart to Amaia. He sees her for who she truly is, calls her on her bullshit, pushes her and accepts her for who she is while simultaneously helping to make her better. Amaia does the same for Alexi. Shows him how strong he is, how much control he has, that he's worth loving and that this life is worth living for. Tomoe shows her strength in how she rebounds from the heavy hit of Seth, is there for her family and isn't afraid to make the hard decisions. Her strength at the end was so much and I hope to see her find happiness in the future. Reina grows so much in this story. She's always been the one to keep everyone happy and balanced, but she has to dig deep into a part of herself she didn't know existed to push through everything with her family. I hope that as she works through her anger and grief, we get to see her come back to that light. We didn't get to see much of Riley in this book but he's just the best. I love his devotion to Amaia but that through their separation he was able to open himself to others. So many parts of this book gutted me. When there's war you know you're going to lose people but that doesn't make it easier. Everyone had to make so many hard choices and the end to them isn't in sight, but I can't wait to see how they thrive and survive in the next installment.
“How many times do I have to tell you, I’m the villain of this story?” This is book #2 in The State of the Union series, and if book one had me ready to scream at Amaia, then book two had me read to declare war against her. I am so attached to her right now, and the fact that she KEEPS TRYING TO DIE is stressing me out. This book starts out with the family in the worst situation possible, and it somehow gets worse from there. All you can do is hang on for the ride and hope the family makes it out alive. Alexi also went from my favorite character to actively generating stress. I love him; he is funny, has so much emotional baggage, and is absolutely ride or die for his girl (it’s really more ride or burn the whole world for his girl), and I love that for him. Nelle, thank you for this amazing story and for reminding me that no matter how much I liked this book, I would not survive the apocalypse. Summary: Amaia and her family are fighting to survive the apocalypse, heartbreak, and a gut-wrenching betrayal. They are trapped in hostile territory and desperately need to get home so they can keep The Compound safe. Amaia and Alexiaries must work together to use their ruthless power to keep the family safe. The only danger is that with power that deep, someone’s heart is bound to get burned. Reina and Tomoe are reeling from betrayal and struggling to cope, especially when forced to work with an enemy and fearing for their sisters safety. Amaia is ready to risk anything if it means that she can keep her people safe; after all, her mentor’s motto is “Compound comes first.” Can the family make it out of this alive? Or are they destined to burn?
An amazing sequel to an amazing series!! I truly cannot get enough of this world!
We ended Rising on a CRAZY cliffhanger, full of betrayal and heartaches. I knew from the tropes there would be a betrayal, but it was NOT what I expected and clearly it wasn't anticipated by any of the characters (except Amaia and Riley).
After Amaia pulled the ultimate Aelin stunt, Echoes of War is built around our other MCs coming to terms with her decisions and moving forward as a family. There is a more mystery, and even more action this time around.
We also get the pleasure of Amaia and Alexiares' relationship growing through their own trauma and issues. Their relationship is fire-y (pun intended), but the openness and vulnerability that they share is truly one of my favorite parts about this book. How they compliment and defend each other is such a treat given how they started.
I loved getting to read more from Riley, Tomoe, and Reina's POV. Each character is going through a lot and watching them process and heal in their own way was really satisfying. Seth can eat rocks....oh wait, he can't. (Iykyk).
SO much happens in this book. We have unlikely alliances, old friendships rekindled, sacrifices made, heartbreak, devious plans, and I fear there were seeds of more betrayal planted that I haven't figured out yet!
Nelle does an amazing job at foreshadowing, and laying the groundwork of what we can expect in book 3.
Nelle has created something special with this world that can go so many places. These characters are strong and can stand on their own without Amaia (how she wrote Echoes proves that).
I will patiently wait for the next installment, but wow I'm excited to read it when it's ready!!
In "Echoes of War," the second installment of the "State of the Union" series, Nelle Nikole continues the saga of Amaia and her family in a dystopian world split by conflict and disloyalty. After the betrayal in the first book, I was initially torn apart by the possibility of Amaia losing more of her family, but seeing how the story evolves kept me thoroughly engaged. The story continues seamlessly from where the first novel, "Rising," left off, immersing readers in emotionally charged atmosphere. Nikole weaves together themes of devotion, betrayal, and redemption. One of the strengths of "Echoes of War" is its character development. New characters are introduced (aham Abel), giving depth and complexity to the plot, while existing ones grow significantly. The relationships of the family are examined in greater depth, with moments of connection as well as heartbreaking betrayals. The relationship development between Amaia and Alexiares is a highlight of the book. From the tentative beginnings in the previous installment to the progress they have made in "Echoes of War," their bond adds another layer of depth to the story, providing moments of both tenderness and tension. This book's world-building is also impressive, providing readers with a vivid view into a society dealing with the ramifications of war, magic, and technology. From elemental confrontations to dark arts, Nikole expertly navigates the depths of her imaginary universe. All being said, I am looking forward to read the next book and see how the story progresses.
This is now my second time reading Echoes of War. And guess what? Yep my emotions were still all over the place!
I love where this story is heading. I love that it has so much grit and heart at the center of it all. It pulls you in with each characters story and journey, whether you like them or not. They are all just unbelievably human characters. And they all feel so tangible. I really appreciate the different pov’s, especially in this case because I think it is crucial while at war with the pansies and the impending war they are facing with Covert and Co.™️, you are able to see how each character is feeling and moving in the world. They all feel so distinct and I think that’s a big part of why the story shines. It’s an action dystopian story that really is about a bunch of strangers who became a family trying their best to get to their happy endings. Even if that makes them the villain in someone else’s eyes.
Echoes follows an elite morally grey cast, and is a great adventurous, harrowing, ✨steamy✨ and banter packed sequel to Rising and I’m beyond stoked to read book 3, even if my heart is still recovering.
I am not gonna say the spoiler that had me dm-ing Nelle like a crazy person. But I will say Nelle, you gagged me. I was taken aback, I was shocked to my core. How dare you! Now give us more.
My pressure was through the roof with this book. Picking up where book 1 left off with a shocking betrayal the hits just kept coming in this book. Amaia's relationship with Reina and Tomoe is fragile due to her poor decisions in book 1. It seems as if everyone is dealing with Amaia on an as needed basis because too much damage has been done. Surprisingly the one person who was her rock and had her back no matter what, was the very person she hated with a passion in Book 1; Alexiares.
This book did not hold back. More violence, more carnage, more deception, more betrayal and more heartache. Non-stop, fast paced action and suspense. Amaia has the weight of the world on her shoulders and in true solider form she takes everything in stride. At times it seemed as if there was no light at the end of the tunnel, but Amaia and her family manages to pull through some tough times even with fragile bonds.
I've come to the realization not to get attached to anyone-character because there's no telling what lies int he cards for them. Although this book ended with a bittersweet Epilogue; something tells me that was simply the calm before the storm and things are about to get a lot worse for Amaia and the crew and the war they found themselves battling was just the beginning.
If you thought "Rising" had you on the edge of your seat, buckle up, because EOW is a whole new level of intense.
From the get-go, it’s like we never left Amaia and the gang. The vibe? Tense. The stakes? Higher than ever.
Post-Rising, our squad is dealing with betrayal and heartache, and it’s raw. Nelle doesn’t shy away from the tough stuff – heartbreak, trust issues, you name it. But with war on the horizon, there’s no time to wallow. The action is non-stop, the drama is dialed up to eleven, and the character development is Chef’s kiss
Now, onto the juicy stuff: Nelle seriously upped her game with EOW. She took everything epic about sci-fi/fantasy/adventures, threw in some extra plot twists and shockers, and spiced it up to create this masterpiece.
For those of you who geek out over war strategies and moral dilemmas, this book is your jam.
It’s dark, it’s funny, it’s emotional, and it’s got heart. Honestly, if you’re into stories that make you feel all the feels while keeping you on the edge of your seat, "Echoes of War" is your next must-read.
And if you haven’t jumped on the "Rising" bandwagon yet, what are you waiting for? Dive in, and thank me later!
Thank you, Nelle, for an ARC in exchange for an honest review! I was not sure what I was getting into when I signed up for a dystopian fantasy series but this was everything I could have hoped for.
WOW. Nelle is a magnificent writer. The writing in combination with the characters and the plot made this book a phenomenal read. It’s not often that the sequel is better than the original but that was 100% the case with this one for me.
Where Rising was a slower book that focused on emotions and world building, Echoes of War was so action packed. I LOVE the new characters introduced - Sloan, Abel, and Elie. I love the SLOW BURN romance. The betrayal and the death were emotional for me as the reader because I could feel the characters’ emotions. I did not anticipate that ending but I’m excited to see where this series go from here. (I am being purposefully vague as to not spoil the book as I strongly encourage everyone to give this series a read)
Nelle, thank you for the introduction to this genre and for this masterpiece!
"Just because we're up against evil doesn't make us good."
In the wake of incredible betrayal Amaia, Alexiares, and our found family of misfits must stay united in the heat of impending war.
Grief demands an audience, and Nikole’s ability to bounce seamlessly between POVs gives the readers a look into the deep trauma, trust issues, and healing that our characters must work through to find their footing again. This book shows the ruthless nature of war – no pauses for broken hearts or fits of grief, and no soul is spared if they are on the other side. Tomoe was my absolute favorite character in this book. Her experience through the stages of grief is heartbreaking, but inspiring, and I can’t wait to see how she grows in the future.
Full of sci-fi elements, epic action, and a dash of spice 😉, this book will have you trying to speed read to find out what happens next (shout out to my husband that had to deal with me yelling in the final quarter of this book). Congrats to Nelle Nikole on a successful sequel!
In this book 2 of the State of the Union series, society continues to struggle. Yes, there are zombies in this series. But I love how they are not the whole story but just a part of the storyline.
War comes. With war comes loss, betrayal, strength, and weakness. It’s all here. The characters are so real; the things they experience and the growth they make (or don’t make in the case of one). I laughed. I raged. I cried. I was so nervous. I was biting my nails. I even had to stop reading and shut the book for a few minutes because I was so disgusted with the belief system of one and the weakness of another. This book has it all. I told the author at one point I wanted to hit a character up side the head with the book…hardback format just to knock some sense into him and make him see the light.
It is written from several POV‘s…those of our main characters. I love this. It gives more insight into the characters, what they are thinking, and their actions. I cannot wait for the next installment to see where Amaia and the rest of the crew go from here. Can they win the war?
Echoes of War is book two in this series and picks up right where Rising left off. This is a post-apocalyptic/dystopian series that includes elemental magic. The character development in book two is phenomenal. I enjoyed learning more about each character and loved the newly introduced characters as well. I was so invested in each one and this book had me on edge with worry for each character, as it takes place as war begins.
The slow burn between Amaia and Alexiares continues, and I could not love their relationship and banter more. The banter and family vibe with all of the main characters is perfection. Pretty much every character is morally grey, but there really is no other way to survive an apocalypse.
I really enjoyed this book and cannot wait to read book three and find out what happens. This book is well written and the plot is so original. Definitely recommend if you are a fan of dystopian novels, slow burn romance, and found family.
First of all, wow! Where is book 3????? Soon I hope. This book delivers exactly as promised, a post apocalyptic fantasy romance with magic, science, some walking dead, betrayal, spice, and also moments when you least expect- written sometimes so profoundly they bring tears to your eyes. This book really has it all.
I am also, very very grateful for the kind and gentle way the author includes animals in the book- without ruining my soul- so I’m very appreciative of that.
This book is written intelligently, with thoughtful planning and it does not just rely on constant tired zombie action. I’m in love with the magic and the abilities and how the author merges them with science, and makes some of these seemingly magical abilities tangible by bringing them back into biology.
Wow! 🤯 I don't know where I thought this would end but I DID NOT see that coming! Echos of War picked back up immediately after the events at the end of Rising and I was sucked in just as easily as I was by book one. While this book felt a little slower at times, I genuinely did not mind because I loved getting to watch all the character development and being more immersed in this world. This book definitely tugged at my heart strings and I loved the representation of chosen family. I stayed up until 3am because I couldn't put this book down. I'm still recovering from the emotional stress this put me through! I seriously cannot wait for book three and will be impatiently waiting for its release!
P.S. As a fellow Minnesotan it was a bonus to see all the MN rep! It definitely brought a smile to my face ❤️
Boy, did this book take me for a ride! 🎢 From start to finish, it was an intense, action-packed journey filled with:
⚔️ Epic action & brutal, gory fight scenes – every battle had my heart racing! 💀 Strong, badass, and morally grey female leads – Amaia is everything! 🏳️🌈 LGBTQ+ representation – seamlessly woven into the story. ❤️🔥 Banter-filled slow burn romance – the tension was everything! 🛸 Sci-fi & dark fantasy magic – a unique, fascinating blend. 💔 Deep trauma & emotional damage – the characters go through it. 🌍 A post-apocalyptic dystopian world – dangerous, gritty, and immersive. 🔥 A journey from grief to vengeance – the emotions hit HARD.
It took me some time to finish this one because I didn’t have much time to read, and honestly, that ruined the experience a little for me. ⏳💔 I couldn’t connect to the characters as deeply as I would have if I’d had more time on my hands—but that’s on me, not the book! These characters are beautifully written and incredibly deep, and I know I would’ve been even more emotionally invested if I could’ve read it in one go. 📖✨
This sequel did not disappoint. It had me on edge, screaming at the pages, and clutching my heart. If you love high stakes, morally complex characters, and a book that hurts so good, you NEED this one! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Echoes of War picks up right where Rising left off, and ohhh my god, I was not ready. Nelle does not let you breathe. The betrayal? Still stinging. The tension? Cranked up to eleven. And the emotional damage? Deep, delicious, and nonstop. Amaia and Alexiares ignite in this one, like, literally. The slow burn officially explodes, and I was SCREAMING. Their chemistry is off the charts, but what got me was the quiet, vulnerable moments buried between all the chaos. The fights are bloodier, the magic darker, the stakes impossibly higher. There’s this constant push and pull between hope and heartbreak, and just when I thought I had a grip on what was coming next, bam, another twist. Another loss. Another moment that hit so hard. 😭 I am wrecked. I am in love. I am hanging off this cliff by a thread. Book 3, I’m coming for you!
I can’t stop crying & I don’t want too. I need to gather my thoughts. I’ll leave this here & come back. Perhaps, I should give myself until Wednesday to be not okay.
If you need the perfect dystopian book w zombies & magic, this is really for you. Ppl need to start talking more about it.
The magic system starts to get more complex in this book. War is almost there. We meet a couple new ppl & their stories are just as important as the main characters.
I loved the multiple POVs. I feel like it adds layers to the story it’s great reading one POV but getting multiple allows me to really dive into the story more.
After furiously reading the first book in this series I was so excited to start this one! Let me tell you what it was one of my most favorite books this year to date! Nelle crafted such a wonderful post apocalyptic world with the first book and then with the second one expanded on it and makes you fall in love with it all! I received this book as a ARC read and I am so glad that Nelle chose me to be a reader for her! Highly recommend this serious if enemies to lovers in a post apocalyptic zombie world is up your alley!
🔥🥺🤭😩😅🫨💔 This is a well thought out, intense and well established adult dystopian story.
I enjoyed these books! It’s told in various POVs which I thought brought an interesting dynamic to the storytelling. Each character had a very different voice and gave the story different layers as you experienced it through different people. I enjoyed how magic was integrated into this dystopian world. The end of this book gets INTENSE, and while I wouldn’t say this ends in a cliffhanger, be aware this is not the end of the story.
*This book was an ARC. This is my honest voluntary review*
I'm pretty sure I spent half this book ranting to anyone who would listen, it will get you emotional damage. I fell in love with all the whole misfit crew -Amaia, Alexiare, Riley, Moe, Raina, Abel, Prescott and even Seth- just for Nelle to yank the emotional rug out from under me every 10pgs. I full on bawled at one point. But despite the emotional warfare I absolutely loved this entire book (especially Chapter 26 👀😍).
