In the world that remains after the conclusion of The Sixth Gun, the thinnest veil between reality and the mystical plane that serves as a doorway throughout the universe lies at The Crossroads. A band of disparate outsiders in the Wild West are brought together here to defeat the Hunter, a creature of apocalyptic power that endangers all creation.
This volume collects The Sixth Gun: Shadow Roads #1–10 from master storytellers Cullen Bunn (Harrow County, The Empty Man), Brian Hurtt (The Damned, Manor Black), and illustrator A.C. Zamudio.
Cullen grew up in rural North Carolina, but now lives in the St. Louis area with his wife Cindy and his son Jackson. His noir/horror comic (and first collaboration with Brian Hurtt), The Damned, was published in 2007 by Oni Press. The follow-up, The Damned: Prodigal Sons, was released in 2008. In addition to The Sixth Gun, his current projects include Crooked Hills, a middle reader horror prose series from Evileye Books; The Tooth, an original graphic novel from Oni Press; and various work for Marvel and DC. Somewhere along the way, Cullen founded Undaunted Press and edited the critically acclaimed small press horror magazine, Whispers from the Shattered Forum.
All writers must pay their dues, and Cullen has worked various odd jobs, including Alien Autopsy Specialist, Rodeo Clown, Professional Wrestler Manager, and Sasquatch Wrangler.
And, yes, he has fought for his life against mountain lions and he did perform on stage as the World's Youngest Hypnotist. Buy him a drink sometime, and he'll tell you all about it.
I liked a weird western a lot, and this has tropes, lore and colorful characters so it was pretty fun. I didn't get to finish it, but I imagine it gets better as you read.
Sixth Gun was great and this, while taking place in the same world felt...different. Not bad by any means, but just different. I missed the main cast but the story was entertaining. The Crossroads are now thin and they need protected. Bunn gathers those forces here and it was a good read despite "newness" and the final couple of chapters being slow. The artwork was super solid. Overall, I'm not sure this story needed to be told as it seems to set up something new as opposed as to an epilogue.
Shadow Roads is an interesting sci-fi/fantasy/western with compelling leads and a mystery at the heart of the world that calls to be solved. This is a strong start and approachable to those unfamiliar with the finer details of the Sixth Gun canon but it helps to have read the previous series. Although the speed of the story only gives us a little bit of time with some of the cast, further series will undoubtably expand on this. Writers Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt greatly expand this world filled with monsters and supernatural beings. This continues to establish the rules and mythos of this land and I'm eating it up. Overall this, coupled with compelling character development and amazing artwork, makes Shadow Roads a solid read especially if you read the previous series.
Great return to the world of the Sixth Gun. Cullen Bunn's writing is as good as it's ever been, but the standout for me was A.C. Zamudio. Absolutely blew me away with her work here, really brings a fresh new perspective into the Sixth Gun. I enjoyed the Valley of Death miniseries she illustrated in 2015, but Zamudio has absolutely come into her own here. As much as I enjoy Brian Hurtt's tremendous work through the rest of the Sixth Gun, I hope to see more from Zamudio in the future.
Not really a sequel to the Sixth Gun as much as a separate tale in the same world that may someday connect back- it is fun to see the team introduce new characters and new menaces and delicately tie the story back to the original while still standing on its own. I want more with this crew!
Feels like volume 1,all over again! :) Fresh fsces, interesting characters bouncing off each other. Would read more of this group of heroes of the west
the story arc is enough to maintain the interest most of the time. the art is excellent and the characters are pretty attractive. it's not easy to find a comic book with this quality nowadays
