This 1948 tale by the son of Babar’s creator features the antics of naughty little cousin, Arthur. This time the trickster winds up on the other end of practical joking. King Babar and his family (which now numbers three children) are joined by faithful Zephyr, the monkey, as well as Babar’s rascally cousin. Scorning seaside amusements Arthur seeks the thrills of the airport; he stows away on top of a plane, and from then on undergoes a series of mishaps involving many other animals. Conflict also appears in the form of the rhino pilot and some nasty crocodiles who resent being cheated out of their dinner. Arab hospitality is demonstrated at the reunion dinner and Queen Celeste proves gently maternal. One wonders if this time Arthur has learned his lesson—and if so, what might that be? Without drama/conflict there would not be much of a story…
I love the cursive font of the story. I definitely notice French sayings and grammar, despite the translation.
I wonder about the monkeys, but I don't think it's on them that those feature have been used in racial caricatures.
My copy is old, smoke-damaged and moldy around the edges of the pages. However, I'm delighted by the illustrations. I never paid much attention to Babar when I was a child, but as an adult, I'm struck by the shading, the precise line work, and the gentle colors.
The "adventure" of this story--Arthur getting lost--is so sweetly told, and so many animals step forward to help him get back to his family.
Babar-kirjat ovat alle 3-vuotiaan suosikkeja. Tässä kirjassa seurataan Celesten pikkuveljen Arturin seikkailuja perhelomalla. Artur kokee vaikka minkälaisia kommelluksia ja ajautuu lopulta kauas perheestään. Tähän kirjaan on lukijana hauska eläytyä ja moni kohta sai lapsenkin nauramaan ääneen.
