It Is Not Your Business to Succeed: Your Role in Leadership When You Can't Control Your Outcomes

A fresh perspective on business success!

In my role as Chairman of multiple peer advisory boards, I work with a lot of business owners, and they’re all driven to always be driving the results “up and to the right.” But Brandon brings a fresh perspective to what it means to be a Christ-led entrepreneur, and his message is long overdue!

While business owners can come up with inspiring mission and vision statements, corporate values that resonate with employees, and an awesome strategic plan, they often fail to come to grips with the fact that no matter how hard they work, and how great a team they’ve put together, success by the world’s standards is out of their control. Instead of worldly success, God calls Christian business owners to be faithful with whatever He’s given them to do.

Brandon writes through the eyes of someone that’s figured out that he’s been called to steward his business for God, and shepherd those God has placed in his care. He understands that he’s not the owner, but the manager of something that God owns. Brandon knows what it means to do the hard work required of someone that follows Christ. That’s a different mindset that requires that we hold our businesses and teams with open hands, as they all belong to God!

Brandon is a masterful author, weaving in stories from both his personal and professional lives, as well as stories from God’s Word, and then sprinkling in just enough humor to cause me to smile with just about every page.

The bottom line, Brandon has cracked the code on success for the Christian entrepreneur and it all comes down to being faithful. After all, don’t we all want to hear “well done good and faithful servant”?

This book is well worth reading especially for Christian business owners. It’s an invaluable message and reminder that God alone holds to the keys to our fulfillment and good works here on earth. West is filled with this knowledge by the Spirit, this is abundantly clear in the book.

The cultural references like Hamilton or Frozen, I find a bit immature and take away from the timelessness of a great message. I do hope Brandon will release an update version without the Disney references for posterity!

Absolute must read, or better would be to say that this books message is a MUST KNOW for Christians in a society that values monetary wealth and success over faithfulness.

I very much needed this book, and I recommend it for Christian business leaders. Here's why:
- Despite 20 years of being a Christian, I started my first company with worldly definitions of success in mind.
- I doubled down on the outcome-based mindset as a result of some famous business books about controlling the outcome stroking my ego.
- I've seen the need to repent of this mindset in the midst of humbling failure, and this book was a key tool to aid in that repentance and reset of my mind when it comes to what a successful life looks like for a Christian in business.

Brandon West offers good principles and helpful stories in playing out how this shift works practically.
