There is so much wrong with Squshmallows: The Official Baking Book that I hardly know where to start. Let’s start with the rampant money grab, although I’m not sure that’s the worst part.

Like so many other franchises, the original product spawns an entire empire of spinoffs: toys, clothes, picture books, dollhouses, keychains, scrunchies, calendars, bedding and, yes, even a cookbook. Since Strawberry Shortcake invented behemoth marketing, parents have had a hard time not having their entire paycheck consumed by the latest fad.

The rampant commercialization is sad. Each recipe is said to come from a different Squishmallow pal (Buy me! Buy me! is the tacit message) while “crafted with love and a sprinkle of squishy magic.” (Yuck!) But the recipes themselves are problematic because the vast majority of them are much too difficult for a child young enough to collect Squishmallows. Can you imagine a 10-year-old making Claudia’s Key Lime Pies, which requires separating eggs, zesting limes and filling tart rings? Right, me neither. How about Edie’s Easter Fridge Cake, which requires using a double boiler? How about Satine’s Carrot Cake? Not only does the recipe require shredding carrots (sure, let a kid use a box grater) and zesting an orange, but the recipe requires a child to make marzipan carrots. Right! In other words, this is a cookbook to saddle your mother with extra work.

You might be seeing a pattern with the recipes: Except for Winston’s Cheesy Scones, Veronica’s Pretzels and a few of the beverages, everything produced are sugary snacks, desserts or drinks. At a time when one out of five American children is clinically obese, this cookbook is probably not the best thing to give a child. The author is listed as the Original Squishmallows, which I understand because who would want to have their name attached to this abomination?

In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley, Quarto Publishing Group – White Lion and White Lion Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

This was such a cute cookbook! My daughters and I immediately sat down and started making a list of all the recipes we wanted to try first. First on our list is Clara's Granola Bars, Cruz's Avocado Cupcakes, Han's Chocolate Truffles, and Mony's Raspberry Lemonade. I've already got the ingredients on order and will be trying these recipes out tomorrow. The recipes are easy to follow, and I know my 11 year old will be able to try the recipes on her own if she wanted to.

I really loved that this cookbook has a conversion guide and a substitution list just in case certain ingredients are readily available in your country . It really takes the guesswork out of it. This cookbook would be a great gift for anyone who loves Squishmallows. I will definitely be purchasing a copy for my niece. I received this via Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group in exchange for honest review.

This cookbook is so fun and cute. I have the biggest sweet tooth, and majority of these desserts look very appealing. The graphics look great. I love how every recipe comes with a full color photo.

I thought the recipes might be easier solely based on "squishmallows" being in the title but these are definitely not, but they also don't seem overly difficult either.

I really enjoy how the book has holiday/season inspired treats.

E ARC provided by Netgalley

I have no idea what a "squishmallow" is, but I have a student who is obsessed with them, so I thought I would take a look at this cookbook. (For those who were as confused as I am, think of them as giant versions of Beanie Babies or Cabbage Patch dolls, with the concomitant fans. This from the company website: "Debuting in 2017, the iconic Squishmallows brand features collectible plush with lovable personalities, a whimsical design, and ultrasoft feel. In more than 55 countries, the strong brand equity and popularity have resulted in multiple line extensions and cross-category collaborations.")

It seems like these stuffed animals would appeal to elementary aged children, so I was surprised at how complicated the recipes were. They were clearly written by British bakers, because the measurements are not in cups but rather in ounces, and they call for caster sugar and cornflour instead of cornstarch. While the US measurements and terms are given, it still makes looking at the ingredient list more work.

There are some recipes that would be doable with children, like chocolate chip cookie cups and some quick breads, but there are also meringues and macarons, which seem a bit complicated. There are also ingredients that I personally consider rather posh, like almond flour and whole milk.

This is beautifully formatted, and each recipes is introduced by a squishmallow (they have names). It's bright and cheery, with excellent photos of the baked goods and drinks. This would be a good book for a doting grandmother who is enamoured of The Great British Baking Show and has also been bank rolling a menagerie of squishmallows, and wants to spend quality time whipping eggs and using a double boiler with a grandchild.

And, sure enough, there was a Beanie Baby Handbook back in 1998, complete with recipes!

Honestly, I don’t really know what to say about this book. I didn’t try any of the recipes yet, I just read it, but-
I don’t really know how I feel about this cookbook.
On one hand, it’s a beautiful book. I love the formatting, the illustrations are very cute, and it overall just had a fun vibe. Some of the recipes were very creative, and fit the squishmallows very well (like Cam’s cookies really made sense)! But others…
Just felt… lazy? Like for one of the unicorn squishmallows, we just have a basic unicorn ice cream cone cake (you know, one of those cakes with an upside down ice cream cone of top, and icing to look like a mane.) Part of me wonders if the author already had these recipes planned before even making the book, and just found squishmallows to fit the recipes they had available. I was really looking forward to the drinks, but…
There were no pictures for those?!
Like why…! I hate it when cookbook’s don’t have pictures for some of their recipes. It’s a huge pet peeve of mine.

All in all, the cookbook is cute. There’s hardly anything healthy in the book, but I wouldn’t expect that from a toy line themed around marshmallows haha. Maybe this recipes would be good for birthdays, or a special occasion like that, but it’s not the type of cookbook you’d get to use everyday.

(This book contains mentions of various holidays (ex. Christmas, Halloween, Easter) as well as one squishmallow (Belton) seemingly going by they/them pronouns. The book has the squishmallow’s tags as the descriptions for the recipes, so if you’re okay with your kid reading 50 odd squishmallow tags, you will most likely be okay with this book. I would give this book an age rating of 8+, but keep in mind that the recipes require adult assistance.)

This book is an absolute treasure and would make a lovely gift for children and grown ups alike. A practical book that's just as pleasing to browse as it is to use.

It is beautifully illustrated and each recipe is assigned to a different squishmellow character. Each recipe is introduced by a paragraph about the character and recipe which is so engaging for children.

Recipes are clear with ingredients list and staged instructions. Ingredients are readily available and appear repeatedly throughout the book so are likely to be used again, not just sat in the cupboard.

I love that there's a bit of everything in this book! From pancakes, cookies and savoury snacks to all out show stoppers!

The only thing I'd like to see would be approximate calories per portion. In a health conscious world, and with some of the recipes being very rich in ingredients, it would be very helpful to the reader.

It was news to me that Squishmallows each had names; obviously I need to get out more. But this is no doubt a very sweet cookbook, pun fully intended.

It’s from the Brits, so it has all the charm of the Great British Baking Show but of course, Squishmallows are not as cute as Paul Hollywood. Not even close.

Handily, all measurements are provided in metric and imperial systems (you know: cups, spoons, all your US buddies), and best of all, all the bakes are photographed perfectly. They even explain what caster sugar and bicarbonate of soda are, in case you find yourself in a Stop n Shop instead of a Tesco. Recipes range from festive things you might try if you’re super ambitious-like the Bavarian pretzels, but also simpler fare like banana bread and pumpkin whoopie pies that look totally do-able and delicious.

Thx NetGalley for this sweet treat!

This book is a fun, cute cookbook for baking. Each recipe is presented beautifully, with measurements in g, oz and cups, for all your measuring requirements! There is a handy conversion chart at the end as well!

I really enjoyed the way all the recipes are presented, with an introduction by a squishmallow (I did not know there were these many lol), a picture of the baked goodie, and a cute illustration to go along with it. It'll definitely add a pop of color to your kitchen. I was able to follow along with the instructions, so it does not require a lot of baking skills. They are relatively simple, and aesthetic.

The authors also mention how long they can be stored for, which I really appreciate.

Thanks to Goodreads and the publishers for providing me with a copy of the book. #goodreadsgiveaways #quartobooksus #whitelion

What a cute little cookbook! I was genuinely surprised by the level of the recipes in here. I was expecting a book of child-friendly, novice-level recipes but found that there were a lot of delicious sounding recipes for people with more intermediate cooking and baking experience. The illustrations are adorable, and the food photography was well shot. As a Squishmallow collector, I really liked the little blurbs with the recipes connecting them to the different characters, and I could see it being fun to create the dish that matches with my niece's favorite squish of the week to share with her. Do be aware that almost all of the recipes in this book are for sweets, and there are only a couple of savory options. This far exceeded my expectations for a Squishmallow themed cookbook.

The cover of this cookbook drew me in and I thought it might be something my kids would enjoy so I checked it out. This cookbook is so cute! I loved the way it was laid out with a Squishmallow on each page with their recipe. There are so really cuter and creative recipes in this book and they all seem to be doable for an average baker. The layout of the cookbook is beautiful and the pictures accompanying each recipe are a great addition. There are many recipes in this cookbook that I am looking forward to trying. I think this will be a great cookbook to use to bake treats with my kids over the years. If you are looking for some fun, kid friendly dessert recipes this book is worth checking out!

This cookbook is so colorful and filled with delicious looking recipes. However, many recipes are not really unique, so if you are not a huge fan, this book doesn't really bring many new baking recipes.

Not all recipes are easy, so if you want to make some recipes from this book with your kids, they might need more help than you might expect. Personally, I didn't find anything super complicated and the instructions are quite clear. Every recipe has a photo (which for me is something I want when it comes to this kind of cookbooks).

I decided to give only 4 stars because unless you are a huge squishmallows fan, this book doesn't bring much to the table.

This is such an adorable cookbook. The recipes are fun and unique. Each recipe is associated with its own Squishmallow (like Melina’s peanut butter cookies or Manny’s gingerbread houses). It’s quite the clever marketing strategy, albeit unnecessary, because it appeals to both adults and children alike. However, children would need quite a bit of help with these recipes because they are far too advanced (and possibly even dangerous) for most kids, with steps like separating eggs, boiling water, and using a food processor. Another thing I’d like to mention is that, if you’re an American like me, you will need a kitchen scale for these recipes, as most of the ingredients are in grams.

I received a free ebook from NetGalley in exchange for a fair review.

Ok I really enjoyed this book even though I’m not into Squishmallows or have any real interest in them either. There are lots of good recipes of differing levels for all bakers with great pictures too!

There are simpler recipes like banana bread and shortbread cookies as well as more involved ones for macarons and gingerbread houses! There are also drinks extras, like how to make your own marshmallows too.

All in all a very nice book! Definitely accessible recipes for fans of Squishmallows, and those who just want yummy baking!

This cookbook wasn't only cute but the recipes were tasty! As a mother of 6 kids I try to bake with and for my kids as often as possible, this little nugget is filled to the brim with fun and appetizing recipes. What I really appreciated was that the measures were in grams not only in cups, as I live in Europe, it isn't something I'm really used to. With this book you're not only covered for Halloween treats but also Christmas, Easter and birthdays. The kids loved the small presentations of each Squishmallow before each recipe, and I have to admit, it's cute.

What a cute read! I feel like this one's a perfect book to have for parents. Something to do with your children. It would be really fun experience to have. I liked the illustrations, they were so beautiful and cute. The recipes also were straightforward and simple with an easy approach. Baking beginners also can also benefit from this book with it's basic recipes. We also have some intricate recipes for the brave. Not just kids but friends and family can bake together and just... have fun.

Thanks to the publisher for this ARC!

A very cute dessert and drink cookbook for the Squishmallows fan! I enjoyed that each baking recipe included a full color photograph. This is key to get kids involved in picking and being involved. The book also progresses through the seasons and holidays making it useful year-round. It is also full of fun illustrations featuring our favorite Squishmallows.

Thank you NetGalley, Quarto Publishing Group-White Lion, and Original Squishmallows for the ARC in exchange for my honest review. "Squishmallows: The Official Baking Book" was published September 3, 2024!

Thank you Quarto Publishing Group- White Lion and NetGalley for the e-ARC of the book.

Our household is full of Squishmallow fans, so I was really excited about this book. This book contains recipes for different occasions and seasons, various difficulties and definitely should please every taste bud. I like that the ingredients were listed both in grams and ounces as well as some ingredients had variations depending in which part of the pond you are.

This book is not only fun to look through because of its colorful illustrations, but also fun to follow the recipe for yummy result.

This is a fantastic recipe book that engages all ages and encourages kids to step into the kitchen to create some delicious treats. From cinnamon rolls to macaroons and chocolate bark, there is something for all tastebuds to enjoy.

My daughter loves Squishmallows and really enjoyed helping make some of the recipes from this book. She found it very excited to decorate her favourite characters and the pages are illustrated to engage the younger ages.

These recipes were such a hit in our house we now have the physical book and both kids have tabbed pages of the ones they want to try next.

I received a free copy from Goodreads for a honest review. I think the recipes are easy to follow. I made them with my 9 year that of course loved the book more than me!!!!! We created amazing things. The time I have spent with my child is amazing! This book helped make baking/cooking fun, for a 9 year old boy!!! One that loves Roblox and Fortnite. He loved wanting to do these with me. The visualization of this book is beyond anything. I love love love all the art and color. It was beyond fun.

Adorable cook book. Visually very pleasing and cute. All of the "bakes" have pictures, which is great, but there are no pictures of the "baking extras" or "drinks" which is a bummer. Some squishmallows have a very cute connection to the recipe, though there are some that would seem to be better matched with other recipes.

Would be an adorable gift paired with a squishmallow!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This book is full of easy to follow recipes for all ages and abilities. It’s colourful and attractive to kids and is full of appetising pictures of the foods. There are some cute illustrations of the Squishmallows throughout such as the snowglobe that I enjoyed. I liked that a few drinks were included and appreciated the provision of conversions at the back as it makes baking so much easier.

For any Squishmallow fans, this is a fun cookbook that incorporates recipes with the different Squishmallow characters.

There are lots of fun recipes from classic baking to some more unusual recipes I haven't seen elsewhere. I feel like this cookbook could be a bit more focused for baking with younger ages but as it is many of the recipes are more complicated or require specialty items to make.

If you and/or your kids love Squishmallows and baking, then this book is for you. It's filled with mouthwatering recipes and the illustrations are visually very pleasing. So colourful and vibrant. I'm not sure that all options are easy to make, and not all ingredients might be easily accessible depending on where you live, but these recipes are sure to open your appetite.

I am disappointed in this book. I am not the greatest baker so I lean towards kids books for recipes, expecting them to be easy to make. These are not easy recipes. The graphics are cute though & if you’re comfortable baking I’m sure the recipes turn out good.

Won a copy from Goodreads. It will be going into my squishmallow collection. Book is adorable. I love how the recipes are tied to certain characters. However I feel like a lot of these recipes are far to complex. Was hoping for more simple kid friendly recipes. Looking forward to making some of the drinks and will have pick one of the few easy baked goods to make.

Cute, fun and chock-full of recipes! Mostly sweet bakes, but a couple of savory recipes are in there. Great book for kids, teens, and the young at heart. Bonus: Swishmallows, with their favorite bakes! This is especially nice for those that love Squishmallows, but anybody that likes to bake will enjoy the book and the recipes in it.
