Santa came early this year, and he brought me a big lump of coal
When I asked for volunteers to help with our small town Christmas festival, I should have been more specific.Griffin McBride—the arrogant blast from my past who barges in like he’s taking over the project—isn’t who I had in mind.
I want my gossip-fueled town to whisper about my successes instead of my failures for a change. To do that, I need someone to build my dream of a life-sized Christmas village in town square, not push all my buttons until I totally lose my cool.
Griffin has always had a talent for getting under my skin, though. Back in high school, every conversation we had turned into an argument he needed to win. He even has the trophy to prove it.
Now? He’s more than just the cocky guy I remember. He’s loyal, protective, and he defends me and my festival like he truly believes in me.
I always hated losing to Griffin, but this year, it will take a Christmas miracle not to lose my heart.Mad about Yule is a closed door rivals to lovers romantic comedy without implied intimacy.
Genny Carrick is a sucker for an HEA, especially if there's a whole lot of laughter along the way. She writes romances and rom-coms about stubborn women and the men who fall for them.
When she's not lost in swoony reads, she's probably up to something crafty or trying to get her dog and two cats to love her.
Genny recently moved to Texas from the Pacific Northwest with her brilliant husband and two hilarious kids.
Read if you love townspeople volunteering for a Christmas festival, enemies to lovers, and setting boundaries so you can rest.
I commented at one point, ( since it’s Sunday) we should be like our brothers and sisters in Christ- Not trying to please people. But we should be trying to please God.
Theology lessons aside, here are some moments/quotes I loved;
“My heart glows and soars like Rudolph because it always does when I think about that man. He’s turned out to be completely unexpected but absolutely right. His calm determination makes me feel like anything’s possible, and his fierce protectiveness makes me feel safe like no one else ever has.”
“His lips press against my temple. “I don’t want you to worry about any of that, is all I’m saying. There are people out there who will give you a hard time, no matter what you do. You can’t choose your happiness based on them. You need to make Hope happy.”
“Why won’t you choose your own happiness?” My voice barely makes a sound. He runs his hands under the edge of my coat to grip my hips. “Sweetheart, right now, that happiness is you. And I absolutely choose you.”🥰
“Obsessing is not my MO. I can get single-minded, but usually over plans and goals, not a woman I’m fast realizing might be the best thing that’s ever happened to me. But here I am. Obsessed.”
This book was absolutely wonderful, and I might be slightly obsessed with Griffin and Hope!
Hope is in charge of the town’s Winter Wonderland and its success means everything to her, for the good of the town and to prove herself.
When she’s in need of a handyman, Griffin‘s mom volunteers him. These two went to high school together and rubbed each other the wrong way, and Hope is less than thrilled to have him help out, but he definitely knows what he’s doing and she needs the help.
The tension is still there between the two of them, but that changes into a different kind of tension as they work together. The delicious banter and chemistry between these two was fabulous, and I love their sweet romance!
Things I Loved: 🎄 Enemies to Lovers 🎄 He falls first 🎄 He’s so protective 🎄 Character growth 🎄 Boss 🎄 Movie mentions 🎄 Waffles and Bacon 🎄 Snowball Fight 🎄 Campfire 🎄 Movie mentions 🎄 Christmas spirit 🎄HEA
I love this book and think it’s a perfect read for the holidays!
This was the first book I've read by Genny and I absolutely loved it! Enemies to Lovers is one of my all time favorite tropes and this book lived up to my high standards. This book brings the banter, the swoon and just characters you can't help but love!
Griffin is such an all around great guy. I love that He Falls First and that he loves to rile Hope up, but also encourage, support and protect her. Anytime there is a protective hero they get my vote and I adore Griffin! He is just a cinnamon roll in a grumpy exterior!
I love Hope for her boundless energy and her desire to just bring Christmas joy to everyone! I love that we get to see her confidence grow as Griffin spends time with her and that we see her truly start to shine!
Not many books make me tear up with happiness but this was just one of them! When they get their Happily Ever After tears were shed because they just deserve happiness and they completely belong together.
Thank you so much Genny for sending me this book! It will definitely be treasured on my shelf!
If you need the perfect Christmas Romcom full of banter, laughs, and swoony kisses give the one a go! It definitely brings the magic of Christmas to the pages and I couldn't be happier that I had a chance to read it!
Physical Intimacy Level: 2.5ish? A light level 3 with mild innuendo Zero Swearing Dual POV
When Hope takes over running the Christmas festival in her small hometown, she dreams of making it the best one ever. Complications arise when the handyman hired to help her gets injured and she is left searching for volunteers. Griffin has recently moved back to town when his mother insists that he use his carpentry skills to help Hope. Hope will have to let go of their past rivalries and learn to get along with Griffin in order to make the event a success.
Mad About Yule is a stand-alone Christmas romance. While it is closed-door, Mad About Yule is packed with plenty of sweet and swoony scenes.
I have read so many holiday books this year but this one is my favorite. Nothing beats a small-town setting for a Christmas book. Hope is so sure she can do everything on her own but everyone from her family to the rest of the town are determined to help her. Of course keeping anything a secret in a small town, like a new relationship, is nearly impossible. Hope and Griffin have great chemistry from the very beginning. The rivalry seems to be mostly one-sided with Hope holding a bit of a grudge. I really loved the way in which they encouraged one another - Hope with her painting and Griffin with his business.
I would love to see this as the start to a new series. There are so many fun and interesting side characters including Hope’s sister Lila. I look forward to whatever Genny Carrick has next for her readers.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book had so many really well done sweet touches and kisses. There isn't much real conflict between Hope and Griffin. They just slowly reconnect and go from remembered teenage dislike to love as they work on her project together. I loved seeing them slowly circling toward the inevitable with each other. With lots of sweet kisses and touches along the way! (I really liked that part😆)
Hope's holiday decoration project was so fun! Especially the trains in the store window. I'm glad she finally let her sister help!
A lot of the story is really about the two of them finding their place in the world and in their families, separately and together. It's a lovely, sweet holiday slice of life in small town Oregon.
Oh I absolutely loved this one-add it to your Christmas TBR! Loved Griffin and Hope together 🫠 He was such a supporter of her and so caring. I loved that they both found out that there was more to each other than their high school versions🤎 super cute read!
This got me super into the Christmas spirit! I loved seeing all the preparations of the Christmas Festival and seeing how they got together. It was great fun seeing Griffith coming around on the Festival and fully committing to helping Hope and how she had to revise her view of Griffith. Together they were magic and I had a lovely time reading about the Christmas Wonderland. This was the first book I read from Genny Carrick but it definitely won't be the last!
This was a cute small town Christmas story about enemies to lovers. Gotta save the town Christmas festival, and the handsome woodworker saves the day. It's sweet and clean.
Eeeek!! I loved this book! I really loved their frenemies/ high school rivals relationship in the beginning, the teasing and banter 🤭 I loved how Griffin felt safe opening up to her and the way he cared for her, making sure she rested and didn’t forget to eat, was so tender and sweet🥹 Who knew that a grouchy man could be so freaking sweet!?🤭🥹 I really enjoyed seeing them fall in love and break down their walls for each other. I loved how they were there for each other and the way they encouraged each other 💗 One of my most favorite parts was the waffle 🧇 and bacon 🥓 emojis (iykyk😉) also the cleaning closet🫣🤭 I also loved that they both could relate to their hard family dynamics and how they both fixed their relationship with their siblings🥹 I really enjoyed this book, would definitely recommend!

What does she think we’re going to do, kiss in the warehouse? I… should absolutely not be thinking about kissing Griffin in the warehouse.

Not that I’ve thought much about any volunteer aside from the one with the sharp jawline and judgmental eyes. Apparently, I have a teensy weensy thing for arrogant bad boys.

Ugh. I can’t be smitten with Griffin McBride. I need to crumple all that smit up like old wrapping paper right this second.

This ambitious, determined woman rocking out to Van Halen? If she breaks into an air guitar solo, I might drop down onto one knee and propose.

“You brought me donuts? I forgive you.” She rushes past me to the box of treats. “I don’t think I should have to be forgiven for trying to protect you.” Wait—those words aren’t right. But I love this man, from his direct honesty to his fierce protectiveness to the way I know we’ll never have a boring time together. I love his smirks and sarcastic eyebrow twitches. I especially love the way he always kisses me like he’s going for a personal best.
“Sweetheart, right now, that happiness is you. And I absolutely choose you.” - Griffin McBride
I’m over here fanning myself because Griffin is probably one of my favorite book boyfriends (and I had many 😅 as we all book lovers do). He would do anything for his family, he smirks and knows how to toss some good banter around, and he knows how to love! Griffin you stole my heart!
Ok I’m getting ahead of myself, let’s focus on this review shall we?
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ginny earned these 5 stars! I don’t give them to just any book but to the books that hook me, make me feel all the things, and leave me wishing I never finished the book. I truly loved this sweet Christmas Romcom!
Cons: I don’t think I have a negative thing to say about this story. Honestly, it was well written and I truly enjoyed the experience it delivered.
Pros:
1) I adored the Characters, side characters included. Besides Hope’s Mom who annoyed the crap out of me lol! I fell for Griffin (obviously stated above), I related to Hope in many ways, and the towns people and family members were an added bonus.
2) I love there there was more here than just delivering a romance. Hope was working through her own issues with walking in her sister’s shadow, dealing with a crazy intrusive mother, and with her misguided feelings on relationship. While Griffin lost his Father and was walking through that fresh season fo grief, trying to be there for his family, while also putting his dreams on the back burner. I loved the character growth & stories outside of the romance.
3) However the romance was SWOONY! Oh man, I loved witnessing once Highschool rivalries start to fall for each other as they work together on a Christmas festival. The small town vibes mixed in just - chef kiss!
This was such a fun read and I truly enjoyed it. So much so that I plan to have a physical copy of this on my shelf, as I read this on Kindle Unlimited. Amazing job to the author!

Shameless confession: I *rarely* give any book a 5 star review. I give out a lot of 4 stars, and an occasional 1 or 2 star review, but if I honestly like the book, it will get a solid 4 stars from me. All of Genny's other books have been solidly 4-stars with a couple **almost** making 5 stars. This one captured the coveted 5-star rating.
I haven't finished the book yet - but it is already solidly in the 5-star, must have, my bookshelf isn't complete without it category. It has also joined the ranks of "it isn't Thanksgiving/Christmas until I've read/watched/listened to it," list of holiday favorites. It joins the ranks of the Thanksgiving episode of Gray's Anatomy, the Thanksgiving and both Christmas episodes of The Big Bang Theory, Christmas In Killarney performed by The Outside Track, Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights, a whole line up of sappy Hallmark Christmas movies, and Happy, Joyous Hanukkah by the Indio Girls.
Small town, snow, sibling rivalry, and cozy sweaters - this book checks all the must-have Christmas boxes for me. Plus, I can't resist Christmas villages, tree lightings, and all the other small-town Christmas-associated kitsch (including nutcrackers). Put this book in my hands in front of a warm fireplace with peppermint hot chocolate and I have my perfect holiday trifecta. Genny Carrick has every reason to feel proud of Mad About Yule, because a lot of books have been considered for the position of "must have Holiday read" but until now I haven't found one that deserved the role. This one definitely does.
Something I have learned about Genny Carrick’s writing is that even if it’s part of a series, it can be a standalone and that’s the case with this book too!
We are transported to Sunshine, Oregon the month or so before Christmas where Hope Parrish is in the process of scrambling to find a replacement handyman to help her create her elaborate Winter Wonderland display! Her former one hurt himself and now she doesn’t have a moment to lose! Thankfully Kat McBride has hinted that she has the perfect volunteer for the job, Hope is willing to roll with the punches until she discovers the volunteer is…Griffin!
Griffin McBride (Kat’s youngest son) is the very last person that Hope would want to work with on the project! He made her life miserable in school and now without any other option, the rivals are forced to work side by side! While there is initial pushback, the two learn to put their differences aside and create some Christmas magic! Over the time the work with each other, they both realize that they have more in common than they thought and if they allow themselves, they could find a friend in their rival!
I love the push and pull of their partnership! You get the small town feel while being nestled into the Oregon mountains! When you buy a book before you even finish, it better deliver… oh yeah it did! There is so much to love about this, and it might become an annual read! There is so much left to explore of Sunshine, so hopefully Genny can give us more in the new year! Bravo!
Mad About Yule by Genny Carrick is a light hearted romance set during the holiday season. The troupe of moving from enemies to lovers is always interesting especially when you add nosy parents pushing them together. The main characters are likable and you find yourself cheering them on. The setting is a small town with lots of people who want to help and may gossip (Just a bit). This gossiping has put Hope in a negative position in the past, so she is determined to not fall into that again.
Meanwhile Hope has taken on the leadership in putting together a Christmas festival hoping to bring in lots of tourists who will bring in needed revenue to the town. Hope feels she is always being compared to her sister (the perfect one) and is determined to do this alone. However, one of the key members is unable to continue and Hope has to accept the help from Griffin. Her nemesis from school even though it was years ago.
Griffin’s mother volunteered him to build the village that Hope is looking to have made. The village is going to be backdrop to the festival with a place for Santa to sit and greet kids. As Griffin works and Hope helps their animosity slowly changes. They both begin to be cheerleaders to the other to help them boost confidence to move beyond their present plans.
Mad About Yule by Genny Carrick is a fun, sassy, heartwarming Christmas read.
Such an adorable enemies to lovers Christmas romance! This was a fun and enjoyable read. Fairly low angst and really sweet. Hope was trying to prove herself by planning the town Christmas festival. When her high school nemesis, Griffin, ended up working on it with her, they had a lot to learn about each other. And an unexpected attraction to contend with. A big surprise after their antagonistic high school history. “…whenever I used to play the Kiss, Marry, Kill game, I always axed Griffin without a trace of guilt.” But Hope’s dating history and the interference of her “Maximum Hover Mother”, and town gossip, kept her hesitant. “‘I’m so scared Mom’s enthusiasm and all the gossip in this town is going to kill another relationship, I strangled the life out of it myself.’” Watching the negativity turn to sweet thoughts, swoony moments of romantic tension, and intense kisses was wonderful. The characters were great and the town was an excellent back-drop. I’d love to see more about the town and some of the secondary characters. There’s great banter and funny moments. I absolutely adored the waffles and bacon. IYKYK. Such a cute touch. The epilogue is so sweet. This is a closed door romance with mild innuendo and no harsh language.
If you're looking for a great read with amazing chemistry and all the Hallmark holiday vibes, Mad About Yule is an absolute must read!
Hope and Griffin were so great together. They had been rivals in high school, so when we first meet them, we definitely get all that great banter... but as they get to know each other again as adults, that rivalry turns into chemistry... and oh what great chemistry they had! Genny Carrick is an absolute master of creating those chemistry filled moments while still keeping everything closed doors... and this was another beautiful example of that. I loved Hope's plans for the town and the nostalgia feel of the story... and how he took care of making sure she wasn't overworking herself. With all the small-town holiday festivities, this really did just feel very much like a Hallmark movie... just with more chemistry... and let me tell you, I love a good Hallmark romance! And oh, that epilogue... so sweet! I loved every second spent with these two!
Mad About Yule is a closed-door romance with kisses only.
**I received an ARC for consideration. All opinions are my own.
A wonderful holiday read that checked off the boxes on so many levels - deep emotional connection, redemption between each other and family, pushing the other towards realized dreams, touching moments of healing amid grief, themes of better together, and so much more. And did I mention there are swoony kisses between this couple? Ginny sure can write good chemistry too. One minute I was laughing out loud, the next minute I was fanning myself, and the next minute I was reaching for a tissue. Thank you Ginny for all the emotional depth you poured into this one. It makes me curious though, what the original manuscript was like (since you mentioned you cut some parts out to make it more rom-com-y). I’m sure you nailed those deeper, more serious scenes too, and maybe one day we’ll read them in the pages of another novel. I, for one, will be keeping my eye out (; But bottom line, this one gets my full recommendation! If you love a good story with deep, meaty connection, and a whole lot of flirt, fun, and redemption, this story is for you! You won’t be disappointed.
This was a fun, light holiday read. The main characters had high school history & begrudgingly worked together to create a Christmas Wonderland for their town. The forced proximity + enemies to lovers worked well with the dual pov. I appreciated hearing the history from both perspectives & seeing the communication happen as adults that hadn't when they were younger. Some tough stuff in here with the MMC dealing with the death of his dad & trying to make Dad proud. Also, FMC struggling with feeling like a failure & not ever able to be good enough & not in need of improvement from her mother's pov. I liked how both characters showed growth in those areas throughout the story. I honestly liked that they ended up together as early as they did in the story and instead the book spent time showing them growing individually after they were together. Definitely Hallmark territory, but a book I'd definitely reread around the holidays :)
I loved this one! I enjoyed the chemistry and banter between Hope and Griffin! I enjoyed seeing how Hopes perspective of him changed. I loved that they both helped the other push through and do something difficult but worthwhile.
Favorite Quotes: She’d told a story highlighting my dad’s generosity at her own expense, and I suspect she did it to ease my discomfort. A swell of gratitude has me wanting to pull her to me and hold her close. I’ve been fighting that urge for a while, but right now, I can’t remember why.
“Don’t settle for less than what you really want just to make someone else happy.”
“He’s not you.” She holds my face, her fingertips sending tendrils of heat across my skin. “He’s never done carpentry for a Christmas festival just because his mom asked him to. He’s never defended me and my dreams when nobody else would.” She strokes the sides of my face down to my jaw, her eyes stuck on my mouth. “He’s never made me feel the way you do. He’s got nothing on you.”
This heartwarming Christmas romance unfolds in a small town filled with gossip, tradition, and a generous sprinkling of holiday magic🎄 Hope takes the reins of the town’s Christmas festival with dreams of turning the local gossip mill in her favor. When Hope needs a handyman, Griffin steps in, courtesy of his mom. These two bring more than just festive decorations to the table; they serve up banter, swoon-worthy moments, and a whole lot of heart. The tension between them is palpable, but oh, does it evolve into a different kind of spark as they join forces to bring Christmas dreams to life✨ Genny has gifted readers with a festive treat that combines humor, romance, and a generous helping of Christmas spirit. If you’re on the lookout for a feel-good read that’ll warm your heart this season, look no further—this is the one📚🎅
Loved this holiday romance. I really enjoyed reading Griffin and Hope’s story ❤️. Hope wanted to bring the magic and love of Christmas to everyone in their town with the Christmas festival and Griffen got volunteered by his mom to help out. Griffen was surprised to be so protective of Hope and I like how he supported her ideas. Throw in the flirty banter and the book was great! The two main characters developed and grew both individually and together throughout the book and I liked being able to see both MCs points of view.
If you enjoy flirty banter, rivals to lovers, and all things Christmas, I would recommend this book to you!
*Thank you Genny Carrick for the eARC. All opinions are my own and voluntarily given.
This Christmas romance was sweet with a side of sassy as this enemies to lovers, grumpy sunshine couple work out their differences.
I love the small ways our characters grow emotionally in this book. How they are able to change, encourage each other and accomplish their goals.
I love the healing that happens in this story and how it takes time and effort.
All the Swoony moments. Amazing.
👄Kisses only - on the more PG-13 side of things - this is a closed door book 🍺 Mentions of alcohol consumption and getting drunk/tipsy. All alcohol was consumed responsibly ⚠️Loss of father for our MMC, his grief and other struggles are mentioned
I enjoyed that the romance in this book was a steady progression, and didn't have any forced drama. The main male character is a bit too blunt to be my cup of tea, but he was well written, and I thoroughly enjoyed colourfulness the author gave to the main female character - especially as a more type A personality, it was fun to see her written with a love for vibrant colours and patterns rather than as the more neutrals we tend to attribute this personality type.
My one dislike is her relationship with her mother, and that there was no progression towards appreciation or change/softening from either character. But I do know there is a second book for the character's sister so maybe there is more development in that story - which I do look forward to reading. :)
Well, if you enjoy your typical Hallmark movie trope this book is highly recommended for you The story is about Hope, she is in charge of this year Christmas festival and she has so many plans ( which requires a lot of buildings ) and she needs a handyman for it, after her last handyman strained his back she is out of options, until her high school nemeses Griffin steps into the picture and help her with her project, they will collide at first but then they realize their feelings towards each other the book was nice, no drama and it's a clean romance, I liked it it was nice, but nothing about it will be memorable to me
Can I hug this book? Please? Is that weird? This gave me all the happy feels. Griffin is SO SWOONY and I love him. His smirking? Yes please. All the kisses between these two? LOVE. Also, I love that their first kiss was so tender and sweet. It was perfect.
These two. They had the most fun banter, and I love that this wasn't a slow burn! You really got to see them together and open up to one another. They both challenged each other, and weren't afraid to say what the other needed to hear. They supported one another, and were just so darn adorable.
This book made me smile SO BIG the entire time and my cheeks HURT by the end of it. Go read it. Okay?
I'm honestly all for PDA. My husband isn't a fan, so we keep our affectionate displays mostly behind closed doors. I would love for him to be affectionate in public, but that's simply not who he is. Like Griffin and Hope, we have to love one another as who the other is without judgment or criticism. It's a challenge when one wants something different from the other, but, like Griffin, I choose to love my man as he is. It doesn't mean I won't continue to hope for more PDA, but loving him is enough. Just as it is for Hope and Griffin.
Perfect story for this season. Definitely could be a Hallmark movie. I have a ton of library patrons that would also love this book. It also references my favorite Christmas movie. Sadly I did not go to high school with any guy that I would want to run into and start a relationship with. Basically my life does not resemble a Hallmark movie one bit.
My only complaint is when you self publish books so close to Christmas libraries don't have time to catalog and then have the book available for very many checkouts.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Hope has volunteered to help plan and organize her small town’s annual Christmas festival and all is going well until her handyman hurts his back. Thankfully one of the local ladies said she knows just the person for the job: Griffin McBride - Hope’s high school rival.
It took me a bit to get into this book but once I did, I had a fun time. This book is lighthearted and cute. Although this is technically a rivals to lovers book, the main characters definitely don’t feed into the rivalry for more than a chapter.
I'm a fan of Genny Carrick's writing, but this one just didn't hit the spot for me. It was still fun and flirty, but something was missing for me. I didn't connect with the characters as much as I did in other Carrick books. It felt like the two main characters went too quickly from historical high school enemies to present-day flirtations, without really dealing with their history. More could have been made of how Griffin felt toward Hope in high school and how that's grown and changed now that they are interacting with each other again. Aside from that, the character development and growth was great, the side characters were fun, and the shenanigans were hilarious. Hope was a particularly funny character, it was fun being in her head. Give this a read if you like the tropes, I'd certainly still recommend it.
