David responded to the call to follow Jesus when he was an engineering student. He worked for a world leading aerospace company for thirty-nine years, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. He has an internal drive to understand, whether it is the physics of aerodynamics, or the nature of our relationship with God. He has been a Bible teacher for over thirty years, and a Church Elder, his passion being to help others understand scripture’s vital truth, apply it, and be inwardly transformed in the process. He and his wife Kathryn have two married children, and a granddaughter. He trains and facilitates people in creativity and innovation, and loves designing and making ceramics that are simple, functional and novel.
For Him is a study of the book of Colossians. It is written from the heart and the mind of David Knott. I say both the heart and the mind because For Him is filled with things you can learn from Colossians AND things that will cause you to feel what Paul was feeling as he wrote this letter (from prison) to the church at Colossae - most likely a church he had never visited.
I love how David starts the book with a BOOM, saying that the people who were to read the letter had experienced an entirely new way of looking at life after they had understood God's grace. In other words, grace changed everything for them, as it does for us today.
David points out some highlights of what grace does for believers in Jesus, and he encourages us all to become students of grace - to become, as I think of it "grace-ologists". What a great pursuit that will be! (I love one quote David includes regarding grace and our work. It is from Dallas Willard - "Grace is not opposed to effort, it is opposed to earning. Earning is an attitude. Effort is an action.:
In each chapter of the book David takes time to encourage us to apply what we have read in sections called "Living out your glorious purpose in Christ". These sections help encourage readers to take time to apply what they have just learned to their lives. I use the word encourage on purpose, because these sections are filled with life-producing questions and thoughts. They help turn the Bible study that For Him is into also being a book that can help change your life.
I also loved the stories that run through For Him. For instance a story about a heart broken missionary in Africa who turned his back on his faith due to the death of his wife. Many years later his daughter found him and told him of the results of his time as a missionary. Their relationship was restored, as was his with the Lord. You need to read that story!
I think David does a wonderful job talking through the ways in which we can live For Him in our closest relationships - including marriage. He points out the way God planned for us to live as husbands and wives, and the way we end up living due to sins effects on everything. He gives us reasons to hope for great relationships of service, sacrifice and most importantly, love.
I have learned a lot from this book, and my heart has been impacted by all that Colossians has to say about my life. I highly encourage you to read this book, I believe it will impact your life, and you will be better equipped in your life of honoring Jesus.
