The preface of Mykonos: A Memoir begins with this sentence:

"I lived on an island once in the middle of the Aegean Sea. As Greek islands go, this one is small--ten square miles perhaps, with a population of about 4,000 souls."

This memoir gives the reader a view of this small island and its inhabitants through the eyes of a young American woman, Nancy Raeburn, who lived there for 10 years during the 1970s.

Raeburn is an artist as well as a writer. In Mykonos, she uses words to paint a vivid picture of Mykonos and its inhabitants. But, like most good memoirs, this book is more than just a collection of observations of her surroundings. As she describes the routines, struggles, and life events of the people she comes to know, she also explores her own fears, and questions.

The book gives a progression of her experiences over the ten years, but each chapter can be read as a self-contained vignette. My favorite chapter is the one called, "Two Nuns." It is a fine example of Raeburn's talent for revealing a larger truth while discussing something seemingly quaint and small.

This is one of the books that I keep around so that, every few years, I can pick it up and re-read a piece of it. Just because.

Wonderful memoir. Just what you want to read in the middle of a pandemic as it transports you to Greece and life on Mykonos before it became a tourist destination. Meeting the various Greeks who influenced her stay there fulfills a fantasy I’ve always had. Looking forward to the author’s current book.
