Rate this book
Organizations are known to invest huge sums of money and substantial resources to design elaborate business strategies. Why then do these well-laid plans so frequently run aground? How come leaders find themselves struggling to motivate their rank and file despite offering generous monetary compensations? What makes it so difficult to build loyal, unified teams that are willing to put their company’s success above all else? According to Neeraj Bali, an Indian Army veteran turned executive performance coach, the root of these persisting problems is the lack of a robust company culture.
Drawing from his vast military experience as well as interviews with members of the Army fraternity, Bali provides an easy-to-use culture-building toolkit for all those at the helm of teams big and small. Through powerful anecdotes from the battlefield – the Kashmir Valley, the Sri Lankan civil war, the insurgency in Assam, among others – he shows us how fine strategies are crafted and applied, the gravest of crises thoughtfully navigated, how team members strive to perform better and eagerly support one another, ultimately gaining overarching victories, all by way of a cohesive underlying culture. Such examples are then distilled into intelligent blueprints to help leaders build their own durable culture – the ultimate fount of high performance, effective collaboration and success.
A power-packed compendium of tried and tested guidelines, The Winning Culture is the perfect handbook for leaders looking to revolutionize organizational culture and lead their teams to guaranteed wins.

This book itself is an accomplishment!

Each chapter has more to share, teach and show rather than telling a story. There are eight main chapters with inspirational yet practical content to learn from on how we can improve or build businesses through stories from the Indian army most of us are not even aware of.

First of all, I would recommend this book to anyone in their early years before they take their decision on which path to pursue regarding their career and future. The earlier the book is read and discussed the earlier it’s better. Take your time to read this book one chapter at a time and I can tell you it will go a long way!

The writing is very accurate and highly accessible even for beginners. Yes, as you can expect, the chapters are written mostly from the Indian army experiences so some terms and situations can take a little longer to get familiar with. However, there’s no way this would hinder their reading comprehension.

The author’s voice in the writing is strong and will definitely get you to understand what the stories in each chapter would want you to know by the end.

Each chapter has been written to make us focus on a specific context to help us learn and understand a concept which we can apply to transform our professional life, more specifically on the business culture we can build and develop. The chapters discuss on the importance of culture and traditions in building teams which most of us seem to neglect or lack and why they are important. I truly appreciate the effort and the smallest details mentioned in each story.

Definitely a must read recommendation for the youngsters and professionals alike.

*️⃣ Mr. Bali analyses and explains 'culture' as an engine which drives human beings, rewarding them with a sense of identity they unremittingly seek. A lucid yet elegant way of presentation is suspended all over the folios.

*️⃣The Winning Culture" by Major General Neeraj Bali attempts to bridge the gap between military principles and business success, offering a unique perspective on "leadership" and "strategy". While the book presents intriguing parallels, it also drives the plot into the recent past. Bali's insights, rooted in his military experience, resonate with a plethora of readers, and the applicability of these principles to diverse business contexts is also plausible.

*️⃣ A greater emphasis is also laid upon development of "leadership", "strategy", "will power" and a good intellect as well. A plethora of politico- historical references and evidences are present in the book in the form of army operations and political turbulences which is ought to shape the mind of the reader in a critical way, exposing them to the raw chunk of 'truth' and the degree of challanges that one can face.

*️⃣A "strength" of the book is the personal experience of the author in the #indianarmy . This rotates the dimensions to the very tagine of the book which sought to extract military principles and help the business leaders to develop a 'culture' in the age of rat race.

*️⃣ Authenticity of the events ( used as case studies) is well checked and one of the most beautiful aspects of the book is it's language. This is ought to leave it's footprints in all the reader's quotient.

Major General Neeraj Bali draws from his well of tremendous experience in Indian Army and distills its essence into a business sutra. While pulling out the army stories, the author has steered clear of tales of gallantry. Instead, these accounts are of the everyman soldiers of the Army.

He begins the book with anecdotes from Kargil war, citing an interview of an anonymous Pakistani soldier published in Time, saying that the Pakistani Army isn't any less than it's Indian counterpart but during this sneaky attack, they grossly underestimated the cultre of Indian army.
Author underlines this point time and again in his book- Culture Eats Strategy For breakfast.
He writes that the engine of culture drives human beings, rewarding them with a sense of identity they seek. Culture lifts the burden of endless daily doubt and scepticism about the road to be taken. It lends meaning and respectability to our actions. It assure us that we only belong and flourish if we swim in unison, especially when the currents are against us.
He explains that strategy is the big picture that allows you to stop fussing with the weeds while trying to grow a forest. It is what the sixteenth-century Japanese soldier-philosopher Miyamoto Musashi described as the ability to 'see distant things as if they were close and to take a distanced view of close things? Why? Because 'Perception is strong and the sight weak, he explained.
Major General Bali shares plethora of anecdotes; a few stand out. How an officer just hours after refusing to ride in his jeep was blown in a terrorist attack in Kupwara, Kashmir. He was amused when he saw that in workshops all over the world, Indian officers introduced themselves as a Colonel so-and-so from India while the officers from the Pakistan Army introduced themselves from 'Pakistani Army'.

How Army men, who don’t even get a bonus at the end of the year, work so differently than civilians??
The answer is the Culture.
The strength of ‘Culture’ is a vital element in the success of a particular business. No strategy or planning will get optimal results if the culture is not aligned with it.

The book distills the rich case studies from the missions and battles of the Indian army, an organization whose primary strength is its robust and thoughtfully developed culture, into intelligent roadmaps, providing leaders with actionable guidelines to cultivate their own enduring culture.

The Winning Culture by Neeraj Bali is easily one of the most gripping and absorbing books I’ve read in a long time. Part of my deep connection to it may stem from an adolescent dream of joining the Indian Army or the Air Force. The life, discipline, and above all, the culture of the armed forces have always fascinated me, and this book brings that world vividly within reach.

The culture of the Army often feels elusive to civilians, almost deliberately shielded. This book changes that. Through powerful stories drawn from every level, from rank and file soldiers to the highest commanding officers, the author opens a window into a world defined by leadership from the front, moral courage, and absolute clarity of purpose. The leadership lessons here are not theoretical frameworks but lived behaviors, demonstrated repeatedly under pressure and uncertainty.

What moved me most were the accounts of Army families. Stories of spouses and next of kin who continue to serve the nation and the Army with unwavering commitment, even after the loss of their husbands or only kin. There is no rancor here, no bitterness, just quiet resilience and dignity. These moments linger long after you turn the page.

Reading these stories forces an uncomfortable comparison. As civilians, our lives are relatively simple, yet we manage to make them complicated through overthinking, hesitation, and lack of clarity. The contrast is stark and humbling. The book doesn’t preach, but it does provoke deep reflection on purpose, discipline, and what truly matters.

I would strongly recommend this book to everyone at least once in their lifetime. For readers looking for practical takeaways, the final chapter thoughtfully translates military culture into actionable behaviors organizations can adopt to remain resilient, profitable, and relevant during crises or intense competition.

As rightly quoted in the book, culture eats strategy for breakfast. No matter how brilliant the plan, it is culture that ultimately determines whether it succeeds or fails.
