Perfect for fans of Kiersten Modglin’s The Arrangement, The Widow on Dwyer Court is a sexy psychological thriller that will leave you breathless.

Thirty-six-year-old stay-at-home soccer mom Kate Burke is happily married to Matt Parsons, although their marriage looks very different behind closed doors. Kate is no longer interested in having sex with her husband. So, while they still love each other madly, they make an arrangement: Matt can have one-night stands with other women on work trips, but when he returns home, he has to tell Kate about them—every juicy detail.

Because Kate has a secret life writing erotic romance novels, and Matt’s adulterous affairs are her bread and butter.

The family equilibrium is upset, however, when Annie Meyers, an eccentric young widow, moves to town with her daughter. At first Kate is smitten with this wild, witty woman, who gives her a much-needed break from the other picture-perfect suburban moms, although she’s not sure how much of her secret life she’s willing to share with her new friend. But it turns out Annie has secrets too—big ones that could destroy all their lives.

I’m both an avid reader as well an an author, which is why I like hanging out on Goodreads. The reader in me really enjoys combing through other people’s book reviews. I so appreciate when folks I follow or are friends with recommend new authors, or cheer me on when I begin a book they themselves loved.

The author in me is just as grateful for the community here. Whether you loved, liked, or flat-out hated one of my books—I’m just thrilled to see my stories being read; connections being made.

The books that I've written include the novel HAT TRICK; OTHER FISH IN THE SEA, (a collection of linked stories); RASH, my wildly funny memoir about running away to (and from!) Bali; and THE WIDOW ON DWYER COURT, a sexy psychological thriller that came out in July 2024.

My newest book is titled LONG WAY DOWN. It's a thriller about a young woman named Deni Rydell who believes that marrying into an uber wealthy local family will make all her dreams come true. As you might have guessed...oh, man, is she ever wrong. It comes out October 21, 2025. I can't wait for you to read it.

When I’m not volunteering at my local food shelf, meditating or cooking, I can be found wrangling words (as well as my crazy cat, Dave) at my desk overlooking Lake Champlain in Burlington, Vermont.

Featuring ~ book within a book, infidelity, secrets, minimal steamage

Kate is an erotica novel author that has an unconventional marriage. She’s not interested in sex, so her husband, Matt, has permission to have affairs while he’s often away on business. The kicker is that he has to tell her every detail so she can write about it in her books. We’re right alongside Kate as she writes, so we’re reading two books at once.

Annie is the new neighbor down the street who has developed a friendship with Kate since their daughters have become friends. Annie is a quirky character and may not be who she seems.

This was an interesting one. The characters try to be likable, but they’re really not. Matt starts off okay, but then you find out he likes to go on 34 mile bike rides and your thoughts start to waver. Then he’s riding for 69 miles for funzies and now he’s definitely moving into crazy talk territory with leg muscles that could probably crack a walnut. Kate’s daughter is lovely, but Annie’s could use a lesson on some manners. Heidi, friend of Kate’s, is definitely someone you’ll want by your side. Not only does she run a dog rescue, but she’d be right there to help you push someone off a cliff if they needed it.

Not in the thriller category and more just domestic drama, which was fine. It’s not hard to figure out where the story is heading, but it has a satisfying conclusion.

EXCERPT: 'Tell me what's happening with your book. Are you going to kill off Audrey?' He puts an imaginary gun to his head and pulls the trigger. 'Puh-kew!'
I roll my eyes. 'You're hysterical, Matt.'
'Right that.' He blows the smoke from his finger gun and stuffs it into the front of his pants before walking over to the closet.
'I'm still not sure,' I say to his back. 'Do you think I should kill her?'
'Audrey shouldn't have to die because she's obsessed with the guy. She can't help herself, right?' he says, taking out his blue Armani suit.

She shouldn't have to die because she's obsessed with the guy?
'I'm not so sure you're right about that,' I say, standing up.

MY THOUGHTS: Wow! This was a surprise! A good surprise.

It will be well known amongst those who regularly read my reviews that I am not a fan of open-door sex. So why pick up a novel about a woman who writes erotic novels? You may well ask - It was the description of Annie Meyers, the wild and witty woman so different to the other suburban mothers that piqued my interest. As it turns out, it was a good decision, because this book was FUN!

It is so different to everything else I have read recently. I loved the characters - even the ones I didn't like! And the ending is the last thing I would have imagined, but it worked perfectly.

The descriptions of the sex scenes - we get it all secondhand, so it's not particularly graphic - didn't faze me at all. They weren't there for shock value, as is so often the case. They are an integral part of the plot.

This is a read best gone into blind. The Widow on Dwyer Court is my first book by Lisa Kusel. It won't be my last. It is fast-paced, outrageously unhinged and compelling.

⭐⭐⭐⭐.3

Kate Burke, 36, is happily married to Matt Parsons, although their marriage looks very different behind closed doors. She has a secret life writing erotic romance novels under a nom de plume, and Matt’s adulterous affairs are her bread and butter. Annie Meyers, an eccentric young widow, moves to town with her daughter and she and Kate become friends.

My opinion of this novel varied almost from day to day. I don't normally read erotic fiction so there were times when I'd cringe at the description of various sex acts and other times I'd get so immersed in the story that I'd forget about the eroticism until it popped up in the story again (pun intended). Some of the erotic romance that Kate is currently writing is contained in the book as a story within a story and the transition is well done but still uncomfortable for me to read at times. I guess I'm more of a prude than I thought. Still, I never once thought about dnfing the book. The writing itself is fine and easy to read.

TW: Infidelity, sex acts, some bad language.

Once again I find myself in need of a half star but unfortunately I have to round down in this case. Most reviewers rated this much higher so check out other reviews if you're interested in reading it.

My thanks to Blackstone Publishing via Netgalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this novel. All opinions expressed are my own.

"The Widow on Dwyer Court" by Lisa Kusel is a book that left me feeling conflicted, earning a rating of 3.5 stars.

The setup of this book is seriously wild – we've got a stay-at-home mom delving into writing steamy novels while her hubby's off having flings on work trips. Now, that premise definitely caught my attention, but I'll be honest, I struggled to really sink into the story. Some parts made me feel pretty uncomfortable, and it was hard to fully immerse myself in the plot.

But hey, props to Kusel for her creativity – this book is unlike anything I've ever read. Seriously, major points for originality. That being said, I couldn't help wishing the characters were a bit more relatable. None of them are exactly likeable, and by the second part of the book, I was kinda over their drama.

Still, there's something oddly captivating about "The Widow on Dwyer Court." So, would I recommend it? Yeah, I'd say give it a shot if you're into something a little offbeat. It's not perfect, but it's definitely got its own unique charm.

If you read the synopsis of this one you already know this is outrageous because that premise is insane 😂 so when I started this I knew it would be slightly ridiculous but I had no idea just how unhinged it would get. The author really went there in terms of outrageousness and I was here for it. This was fast paced, I could not put it down so there was an addictive quality to the authors writing. I really had no idea what the characters would do next but I was dying to know. There’s a bit of a book within a book as there are excerpts from Kate’s steamy erotica story interspersed within the chapters so that was fun. You also hear from Annie, the new neighbor in alternating chapters and she was quite the character. If you like domestic novels with unhinged behavior, a side of steam and some pretty surprising twists this was a blast. The publisher says it’s for fans of The Arrangement series and I can definitely see that!

A nice domestic drama with the kick of a thriller to it to start the year.

Go into this blind and without reading the synopsis for maximum effect.

Kate writes erotic fiction, and during the course of the story a lot of what she is writing is told to us, either via Kate directly or in conversation with her husband Matt, for Kate doesn’t do sex, she tries but it’s just not for her, so in a bid to save her marriage and her career, Matt has a pass, when he’s away on business he can sleep with other women, no strings, no feelings, but above all he reports back to Kate with much needed material for her books.

When free spirited widow Annie comes to the neighbourhood Kate is delighted to have a new friend, and their kids become firm friends. All is really not as it seems though, could Annie’s past be a clue as to what lies ahead for all of them.

I’m glad I didn’t let this pass me by!

The dual narration by Hilary Huber and Brittany Pressley was excellent 🎧

This book was so unique and I absolutely loved it! A little spice, a lot of drama, some super unique and quirky characters, and a just a pervasive feeling of "what the heck?" was a combination I didn't know I wanted but absolutely needed. I couldn't flip the pages fast enough and even more compelling was that I couldn't quite put my finger on if this book was a thriller or not!

Kate writes best selling erotica novels under a pseudonym, but her daily life couldn't be further from the steamy scenes in her books. Totally in love with her husband but wholly uninterested in a physical relationship (with anyone), Kate and Matt have rewritten the rules of marriage. While unconventional, it works for them - and helps Kate produce totally tantalizing and scandalous novels that seem to keep even the most critical spicy romance lovers happy.

When Annie and her daughter Terra move to town, the dynamics between Kate and Matt shift. I couldn't put my finger on whether or not Kate was being paranoid, what possible attraction Matt might have to Annie, or what the play would be if Annie was trying steal Kate's husband while also befriending her. How everything played out was so fun and definitely not how I predicted!

If you're looking for a novel that bends genres, has steam but isn't graphic (I maybe even wanted a little bit more!), and is wholly and utterly unique and compelling, look no further! The Widow on Dwyer Court checks all the boxes and more. Super excited for more by Kusel!

Thank you to Thriller Book Lovers - The Pulse for connecting me with this author and stellar novel. Thank you also to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for the copy.

This was such an odd book. We have a married mum of one, famous for being an author. She writes erotica but hates sex. So she makes a deal with her husband, Matt. He can sleep with whoever he wants as long as he tells her so she can use the details for her stories. But, unsurprisingly, it eventually goes wrong.
This one was marked as a thriller, but to be completely honest, it was only the last 10/20% of the book that seemed to have any kind of thriller vibes. Most of the book seems to focus on Matt's sexcapades and parts of Kate's book. It was very, very sex orientated, and unfortunately, that just isn't something I enjoy reading. Had I known just how much sex and how little thriller there was, I don't think I would have picked this one up.
However, the writing was great. The last part of the story was twisty and unexpected. There was just too much hide the penis and not enough stabby stabby for me.

Ya no no no I cannot do this. This book is beyond weird and disgusting and not at all the thriller I was hoping for😭😭😭

Annie is literally at a children’s playground with her daughter and I get it’s hot outside but she says and I quote “reach into my pants and pull at my moist underwear so it isn’t all bunched up against my crotch.”

Than she says “I retract my hand and give it a good sniff and am about to lick my fingers when I become aware of a brood of motherlings eyeing me from the other side of the field”

WHAT????😭🤢😭

This is an extra spicy and suspenseful story that is character-driven mainly by Kate and Matt. They have a bizarre arrangement where Matt is allowed to have extra-marital relationships as long as he tells his wife all about them for her erotic romance novels. The character development is well-done with each character being distinct and interesting. I think readers who enjoy spicy romance, romantic suspense, and domestic suspense would enjoy this book.

I’ll start by sharing that this author reached out to me personally to ask if I’d read and review her book - she was kind in her email and the book sounded interesting to me, so I said yes, and while I’ll still be honest in my review I do think that’s worth disclosing!

This book took me for a bit of a roller coaster ride in terms of my intrigue and enjoyment. From the start, I was generally intrigued by these characters but was wondering when the thrill or suspense would come in to play. It took quite a while, so I’m not sure I would even say this is a mystery/thriller. Think more Liane Moriarty domestic/suburban drama. The main character in this book writes erotic novels so a lot of this book is learning about her process and then reading some pretty spicy excerpts from the book she’s writing. I think that premise was really interestingly explored (she lets her husband cheat and then tell her about his experiences so she can put them into her books - wild) but personally I didn’t need to read that much of the actual book-within-a-book. Then as far as the new neighbor/female friendship plot line, it took me a long time to care about the two women’s relationship, but around 75% I was pretty hooked and by the end was actually surprised by some of the little twists that took place.

Overall this was definitely a book unlike anything I’ve read before, which I appreciate. I’m not sure it perfectly aligned with my personal reading tastes, but I can respect what I think it’s trying to do and would recommend it to someone looking for a twist on your typical domestic thriller - as long as you’re okay with reading explicit spicy scenes and about consensual (?) cheating between a married couple.

Our main character, Kate, is an erotic writer who pens her spicy books under the name “Daphne Moore”. She otherwise is pretty normal - she has a husband named Matt, and they have a daughter, Finley. Matt is out of town for business a lot, so writing is a natural thing for Kate to get into. She can be home with their daughter, and spend her time writing about sex.

The odd part? Kate doesn’t like sex. At first I thought she was asexual, but in the book she’s called something like sex-averse. Basically, she loves her husband, loves being married and having a family, but the actual act of sex does nothing for her. She played along and pretended to enjoy being intimate with her husband for a few years, then finally admitted that she can’t stand making love to him. She comes up with a compromise, and that’s when the book goes completely off the rails.

Kate doesn’t want to deprive Matt of a sex life, so she asks him for something very strange: every time he goes on a work trip, she wants him to find a woman, have a one-night-stand, then tell her every single detail when he gets home. Kate then turns his sexual experiences into her books - and sells plenty of them. Their only rules are that he is to be safe, and he is only to see the women one time - no emotional attachments.

I’m sure you can tell where this is going - a woman named Annie moves into their neighborhood after her husband dies, and her daughter Terra soon makes friends with Finley. This brings Kate and Annie together, despite Kate being bewildered by this sex-positive woman. Then, I probably don’t have to give spoilers - you’ll immediately see the problem, and what is to be done about it.

This book was relatively entertaining, and it was definitely unique - because THIS WOULD NEVER HAPPEN. Like, couldn’t she just watch some porn to get ideas? (Okay, she tried once but that didn’t work). It’s such a preposterous plot that I had to laugh in some places, and I didn’t care for also reading the “Daphne Moore” books as they were written. I can do without the bodice-ripping, Fabio-type books - even if they’re books within other books. As far-fetched as I found this though, I was still intrigued enough by the story to not only finish it, but enjoy it; the ending was great! Three stars for a very strange read.

What an interesting premise! How does a woman who doesn’t enjoy sex write erotic romance novels? Well, for Kate that’s easy! She allows her husband to be intimate with other women in exchange for using the details in her novels. The situation gets complicated when sexy widow Annie moves into the neighborhood.

It’s impossible to read the summary and not be intrigued by this book! I went in with an open mind. While the erotic romance scenes with Macon, the cheese/dairy farmer in Kate’s novel, gave me more cringe vibes than sexy ones, my attention was still hooked by this truly unique domestic thriller. It also helped that it was an easy to read book with short chapters.

I’m torn on rounding my 3.5 star rating up or down. As odd as this book was, it was hard not to be glued to the pages. It’s like a train wreck - you shouldn’t stare but you just can’t look away 🫣 Guilty pleasure perhaps?

Thank you to NetGalley & Blackstone Publishing for the opportunity to read this digital ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts.

The Widow on Dwyer Court
By: Lisa Kusel
4🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

This book is SPICY and different from anything I have ever read. A unique plot.
🌶️
Kate and Matt have a unique marriage. After having a daughter she told Matt that she did not enjoy sex. With his work he goes out of town and this gives him the opportunity to have sex, all with his wife’s permission.
🌶️
Kate is a novelist and writes erotica under a pseudonym. She holds this secret so her neighbors are not aware of what she does.
🌶️
Kate and Matt use his out of town experiences to add to her novels. When someone new moves to the neighborhood things get more twisted.
🌶️
There are some graphic scenes and a disturbing scene, so just putting it out there. A wicked book within a book, which is not easy to write.

THE WIDOW ON DWYER COURT by Lisa Kusel ✨
ARC review • pub date 07.16.24

This book is absolutely unhinged 😂 a steamy romance writer who has absolutely no drive herself, makes an arrangement with her husband that he can be her muse, and she writes best selling books based off his experiences

it’s wild, but I really enjoyed it! The writing style was great, I read most of it in one sitting. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a thriller, maybe a domestic suspense? Either way, it was good!

Read if you love:
-Kiersten modglin books / The Arrangement
-tea
-neighborhood drama
-eccentric characters/hippies

I just finished "The Widow on Dwyer Court" by Lisa Kusel, and it was quite an intriguing story! It's an unusual domestic suspense that reads quickly. The wow factor and unique premise make it hard to put down.

Told from the POV of Kate and Annie, these oddball characters will keep you flipping the pages. Kate is likable enough but not easy to relate to. Her marital arrangement is mind-boggling! Having an open marriage is one thing, but this woman asks her husband to have sex with other women and report back with all the juicy details. Really tough ask, huh?

Annie, the widow mentioned in the title, is strange from the moment she enters the picture. She exudes an unsettling vibe of someone you don't want anywhere near your husband, especially if he's sex-deprived. Kate - get those claws ready, girl!

This book definitely falls into a category by itself! Lisa Kusel deserves credit for the unique plot! The story gets straight to the point, and even though it's not fast-paced, it is intense, suspenseful, and quick!

Kate writes erotica. But she doesn't like sex. So, she allows her husband to go out and have sex with other women. Which he does. But the agreement is to come back and tell Kate every detail so that she can write it in her book.
Annie moves into the neighborhood. She has a daughter the same age as Kate's daughter. Annie meets Kate's husband Matt first at the park before she met Kate, but they seem to get along pretty well as fast friends
Annie is into organics. No plastic items or artificial foods. Annie tells Kate she is a widow and her husband died on a kayaking accident
Eventually, there is something about Annie that Kate no longer trusts. What is she hiding
Kate no longer wants Matt to sleep around anymore either, but she doesn't want to have sex with him
How can she be a best-selling author and no longer have Matt's sexapades to relay on

I wasn’t too crazy about this one for the longest time. Most of the book revolves around our main character’s spicy (but incredibly cringy) novel she’s writing and then her husband’s sexcapades with other women, that she’s using to write said novels.

The last bit of the book did pick up, but there just wasn’t enough of the good parts for me to enjoy it all that much. That said, for people who do enjoy spicy books and domestic drama, you’d still probably enjoy it.

Thanks to Blackstone Publishing for my eARC.

The premise of this novel sounded interesting to me, which is why I decided to check it out. And it was an interesting story overall! I was glad to get both Kate and Annie's perspectives throughout the novel. They had such opposite personalities that it was a surprise when they initially became friends.

I couldn't imagine being in Kate's shoes in terms of her libido. I know that there are people who feel the way Kate does though. I appreciated that the author explored this facet of her personality, as it plays a huge role in the story. And while Annie has a different lifestyle from one I could imagine leading, the author did a great job committing to this character and showing how much she didn't care what people thought.

This is definitely a domestic drama/suspense. I wouldn't categorize it as a thriller though. However, there were some parts that certainly made me nervous for certain characters. I also didn't see most of what was coming, so I was often surprised.

It would have been helpful if the scenes that Kate was writing were done in italics or a different font, as Kate's own narrative interrupted them a lot and it got confusing. I also felt like the ending after all the buildup was anticlimactic. However, the story was entertaining and kept me wondering what would happen next. I just wish the climax and all the intense drama would have come in a lot sooner, so it didn't feel so rushed.

Overall, an enjoyable read that fans of Kaira Rouda and Leah Mercer, amongst others with a similar style, would appreciate.

This is a great thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat. Kate and Matt are married with 10-year-old daughter Finley. Kate writes contemporary erotic fiction under a pen name but uses Matt's exploits with other women as fodder as she is sex-abhorrent.and he needs the outlet anyway so it's a logical arrangement for both of them, But when new neighbor, Annie moves in on their block she and Kate become friends and Kate learns her husband, Clayton died rather mysteriously. But Annie is so helpful and begins creating herbal concoctions to help Kate appreciate sex with her husband. But of course, there's always more to the story and this one's a doozy!

Never heard of this author before, but the title somehow enticed me.
I am glad, it did !

I am very grateful, that the protagonist - a smud writer - did not go too deep into the details in her books - because smud is not a genre I usually enjoy.

However - I found the whole story pretty great and unexpected, as well as truly refreshing.

Of course, there was a death...but it was a very surprising one. Looks like the one person and story supplier that was needed, was replaced by heart attack and teamwork.

Yes, I am speaking in riddles - but that's because I want YOU to read this !!!!

The story was awesome, a bag of cheese and a stiff drink plus the t-shirt !

Get out and get this book, I loved it - and so will you !

Well, there. The Widow on Dwyer Court puts a spin on suspense and a "dark-esque" mystery.

Kate and Matt had a very interesting marriage. I'm not one to yuck anybody's yum - however, I fully understood and respected the one time only rule that Kate put in place to reduce emotional attachments. Everything that bloomed from not respecting that rule was solely Matt's fault. Now Annie? That lady was off her rocker.

I knew from the beginning that Kate was in for a wild ride, befriending the woman her husband was acting weird about. Everything that came out after, including the wild ass ride to the end. Shocked.

Kate, girl... I have no words.

Wow. This is definitely a different and unique kind of thriller. I don’t think I’ve read a thriller quite like this one before. The main character is an erotica novel author and her husband is her muse. Her neighbor is quite eccentric and loves natural remedies. She is quite the character. I enjoyed this book!

Edit: How many times do I have to write “quite” in a review? 😂😂

This ARC was received via the publisher and Thriller Book Lovers: The Pulse. All opinions are my own.

Kate and Matt have a non-traditional marriage, to say the least. They love each other dearly, but Kate is sex-averse, so they haven’t been intimate in years. But they have an arrangement: Matt is free to have one-night stands with other women when he goes on frequent work trips, but he has to come home and tell Kate every single juicy detail, which Kate then uses as inspiration for writing her newest erotic novel. When a bohemian young widow named Annie moves into the neighborhood, she and Kate become fast friends, but Annie’s arrival threatens to upend all of their lives.

I was so entertained by this unique book, which is a clever mash-up of thriller and romance. If you’re used to typical psychological thrillers, this one might be spicier than you’re used to! This slow burn domestic suspense has the perfect build up to a wild and twisty conclusion.

This is a great book for fans of:
• Spicy suspense
• Dual POV
• Neighborhood Drama
• Book-within-a-book novels

thank you to netgalley for providing me with a copy of the arc for the widow on dwyer court

i realllyyyy wanted to like this one. the synopsis had me intrigued and that’s why i requested it.

i want to start off by first saying that i personally would not call this a thriller and i know that some of the other arc reviewers would agree with me. i feel that its more of a domestic drama (if that’s even a genre?) book. honestly, i didn’t get thriller vibes from this book until the last couple of chapters. i was literally just reading a book within a book plus some porn for like 200 pages. when it was a thriller by the end of the book, it was well written. there were a couple of well done twists and turns the last like 20% of the book, however it took a veryyyy long time to get there. i felt like not much happened until it was revealed that matt was sleeping with annie and unfortunately that was predictable. i literally wrote in my notes that i assumed that would be the cause of annie and kate’s falling out when i was only on page 90.

the characters were okay, i thought they were a little dull. i kinda wanted kate & annie to get together before they started hating each other. (it’s pride month let a bitch breathe) but the ending kinda makes it seem like they did? i need the author to explain the ending to me because what??? how do they go from trying to kill each other to working together in the end?? what kind of jump was that?? how do we go from kate telling annie she’s going to frame her for matt’s death to “so annie, tell me about your sexcapades!” i feel like i missed something. lisa pls slide into my dms so we can talk this out 😭😭

Fun fact! I read this author’s memoir about her move to Bali a few years ago and I really liked it. This is definitely a very different book than that one!
I thoroughly enjoyed this entertaining and intriguing suspense filled psychological thriller! What a unique plot! We have an author that writes erotica but isn’t interested in having sex herself. To get story ideas she lets her husband have one night stands and then he relays to her what happens during these trysts. This all works well until a new neighbour moves in and suspicion and doubts begin to emerge in their marriage. The characters are interesting and well written. As I said the plot is very original and moves fairly quickly. Overall a great read that I found hard to put down.

WOW, this was an addictive read that I could not put down! It’s a unique thriller, like none other I have read before and I loved every minute of it. It had the suspense and spicy that I want in my spicy thrillers. I highly recommend you add this to your TBR because this one is not to be missed!

I truly can’t wait to see what Kusel comes up with next! I will be first in line for her next release.

***Many thanks to Lisa Kusel and Blackstone Publishing for my gifted copy in turn for an honest review!
